Mental Attitude: Depression Continues to Rise Worldwide. According to a new report from the World Health Organization
(WHO), depression affects more than 300 million people around the world, an 18% jump between 2005 and 2015. Additionally,
the report notes that depression is the leading cause of poor health and disability worldwide. WHO Director-General Dr.
Margaret Chan adds, "These new figures are a wake-up call for all countries to re-think their approaches to mental health and to
treat it with the urgency that it deserves." World Health Organization, March 2017
Health Alert: Smoking and Cancer Risk for Heart Attack Survivors. Patients who survive their first heart attack have
roughly a 20% chance of developing cancer over the next two decades. However, those who are smokers at the time of their
first myocardial infarction and continue to smoke are 40% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer during that time frame.

Diet: “Yo-Yo” Dieting Bad for the Heart. Researchers analyzed data on 10,000 patients with hardening of the arteries and
founds that dieters who experienced regular weight fluctuations of eight to ten pounds (3.6-4.5 kg) had more than twice the risk
of early death, heart attack, or stroke when compared with people who maintained their body weight. The researchers suspect
that dramatic changes in weight likely place a lot of stress on the body and cause hormonal changes that affect the heart. Lead
researcher Dr. Sripal Bangalore writes, "This shouldn't deter anyone from losing weight, but this is all the more reason to say
that once you've done the hard work of losing weight, it's really important to keep the pounds off for a long period of time."
New England Journal of Medicine, April 2017
Exercise: Lazy Teens Have Weaker Skeletons. Researchers tracked 300 adolescents over a four-year period and found those
who were less physically active had lower bone strength than their more active peers. Lead researchers Leigh Gabel, a Ph.D.
candidate in orthopedics at the University of British Columbia writes, "Kids who are sitting around are not loading their bones
in ways that promote bone strength." Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, March 2017
Chiropractic: Can Spinal Exercises Help Joint Hypermobility Syndrome? Benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) is
a connective tissue disorder in which musculoskeletal symptoms occur in the absence of systemic rheumatologic disease. A
recent study investigated the effects of an eight-week lumbar spinal stabilization exercise program on pain, trunk muscle
endurance, and postural stability among women with BJHS. At the end of the study, investigators found that BJHS participants
in the lumbar spinal stabilization exercise program experienced an improvement in pain complaints, postural stability, and trunk
muscle endurance that was not observed in a control group that maintained their normal routine. The study provides further
evidence regarding the benefits of spinal stabilization exercises in the management of musculoskeletal conditions.

Wellness/Prevention: Taking Care of Your Skin. To achieve and maintain healthier skin, the American Academy of
Dermatology recommends the following: apply sunscreen before heading outdoors; avoid smoking; manage stress; perform
regular self-exams for skin cancer; wash your face when you wake, before bed, and whenever you sweat; and avoid scrubbing
your skin. American Academy of Dermatology, April 2017
