Mental Attitude: Gait Changes Precede Mental Decline in Parkinson’s Patients. Researchers monitored 119 newly
diagnosed Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients for three years and found that changes to walking pace and variability, along with
postural control, are predictive indicators of declines in fluctuating attention and visual memory. They conclude, “This provides
novel evidence for gait as a clinical biomarker for PD cognitive decline in early disease.” Journals of Gerontology, May 2017
Health Alert: PTSD Increases Opioid Abuse Among Older Adults. Using data collected from 318 adults over the age of 50,
researchers report that older men and women with post-traumatic syndrome disorder (PTSD) have a 29% increased risk for
opioid misuse when compared to those without a history of PTSD. Journal of Gerontological Social Work, May 2017
Diet: Italian-Style Coffee Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk. An analysis of nearly 7,000 Italian men revealed that those who
consumed at least three cups of Italian-style coffee per day were at a 53% lower risk of developing prostate cancer than men
who consumed less than three cups a day. Furthermore, the researchers found that caffeinated coffee extracts reduce the ability
of prostate cancer cells to proliferate and metastasize. The research team points out that the study was conducted on an Italian
population with a coffee culture not only characterized by high consumption, but also by the way in which the coffee is made,
which results in a higher concentration of bioactive ingredients. Study co-author Dr. Licia Iacoviello notes, “They prepare
coffee [the] rigorously Italian way: high pressure, very high water temperature, and with no filters.”

Exercise: Combining Exercise and Vitamin D is Better for Heart Health. In this study, researchers analyzed 20 years of
health data concerning more than 10,000 American adults and found a synergistic link between exercise and optimal vitamin D
levels in reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. In the first part of study, investigators observed that the more one
exercised, the higher their vitamin D levels. In the second part of the study, they found that the most active individuals with the
highest vitamin D levels had the lowest risk for cardiovascular disease later in life.

Chiropractic: Manual Therapy Recommended for Low Back Pain. The European Spine Journal recently published clinical
guidelines for non-surgical treatment of patients with recent onset of low back pain (LBP) or lumbar radiculopathy (LR). Their
guidelines recommend patient education, supervised exercise, and manual therapy for the treatment of LBP and LR, in addition
to advising patients to remain active. The guidelines also caution against glucocorticoid injection, NSAIDs, and opioids as
treatment options for LBP and LR. Manual therapy, exercise, and patient education are often used by chiropractors when
managing patients with low back pain and lumbar radiculopathy. European Spine Journal, April 2017
Wellness/Prevention: Is Your Child's Weight a Concern? Children who are overweight are at risk for numerous health
problems that can continue into adulthood. When consulting your child’s doctor, the American Heart Association suggests
discussing the following: prepare a list of questions and concerns; ask the doctor if you may phone or meet privately if you don't
want to discuss the subject of weight in front of your child; before the visit, chat with your child about healthier living; and
focus on how the entire family can work on becoming healthier, rather than just focusing on the child’s weight.
