Mental Attitude: Brain Scans Find Where Fear and Anxiety May Dwell. According to a new study, scientists say they have
identified where fear and anxiety reside in the brain. In the study, researchers performed MRI scans on the brains of 56 mentally
healthy students who also completed a survey that assessed their coping ability. After comparing the surveys and brain images,
investigators found a connection between the size of a part of the brain called the striatum and intolerance for uncertainty.

Health Alert: E-Cigarettes May Increase Bladder Cancer Risk. Many people think vaping is safer than smoking, but new research
suggests that both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes are linked to an increased risk for bladder cancer. In this study, researchers
discovered the presence of at least two chemicals linked to bladder cancer in the urine of all but one of the thirteen e-cigarette smokers
they tested. In a second study, researchers found that e-cigarettes triggered cancer-related damage in bladder tissue in a laboratory
setting. Dr. Sam Chang of the American Urological Association adds, “We've known traditional smoking raises bladder cancer risk,
and given the surge in popularity of e-cigarettes, it's imperative we uncover any potential links.”

Diet: Lactose Intolerance Linked to Lower Vitamin D Levels. Lactose intolerance is the inability to effectively digest lactose, a
sugar found in dairy products. One cause of lactose intolerance is a mutation in the LCT gene, which is responsible for lactase
production (lactase is the enzyme that helps break down lactose). An analysis of 1,495 men and women revealed that people who
possessed LCT gene mutations had lower blood levels of vitamin D, which is likely due to reduced intake of dairy products, since
these are often fortified with that particular vitamin. Study co-author Ahmed El-Sohemy adds, “We were not surprised that lactose
intolerant people ate less dairy, but we were surprised that they did not compensate by supplementing or eating other foods fortified
with this crucial nutrient… These findings speak to the need for greater awareness for those who limit dairy because of lactose
intolerance. They need to be mindful of getting enough vitamin D from other fortified foods like certain brands of orange juice, or to
consider trying lactose-free dairy products.” Journal of Nutrition, May 2017
Exercise: Light Physical Activity Can Boost Subjective Well-Being. University of Connecticut researchers monitored 419 healthy,
middle-aged adults and found that simply going for a leisurely walk improved mood and boosted well-being among participants—
even those who don't regularly exercise. Journal of Health Psychology, April 2017
Chiropractic: Orthotics Plus Chiropractic Benefits Those with Chronic Back Pain. A recent study investigated the efficacy of
shoe orthotics with and without chiropractic treatment among those with chronic low back pain as compared with no treatment. In the
study, researchers divided 225 patients with chronic low back pain (lasting longer than three months) into three groups: one group
received custom-made shoe orthotics; another group received custom-made shoe orthotics and chiropractic care; and the last group
received no treatment at all. After six weeks, only the orthotics and orthotics plus chiropractic groups experienced a significant
improvement in function, with the greatest improvement observed among those in the orthotics plus chiropractic group.

Wellness/Prevention: Preventing Plantar Warts. Warts are caused by highly contagious viruses and the feet are particularly at risk
for them. To reduce the risk of developing plantar warts, the American Podiatric Medical Association suggests the following: avoid
walking barefoot; each day, wear a clean pair of socks and alternate your shoes; wash your feet regularly, and dry them thoroughly;
and inform your doctor about warts, growths, or other changes in your skin. American Podiatric Medical Association, May 2017
