Mental Attitude: Hot Flashes Significantly Increase Depression Risk. According to a new study, women with moderate to
severe hot flashes are at a significant risk for depression. Researchers surveyed more than 2,000 perimenopausal and
menopausal women and found that among the participants ages 40-65, those with moderate to severe hot flashes were
significantly more likely to have moderate to severe depression than the women with no or mild hot flashes. Based on these
findings, the researchers advise that doctors should screen women with vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes or night sweats) for

Health Alert: Parkinson's Disease May Start in the Gut. Parkinson’s disease may start in the gut and spread to the brain via
the vagus nerve. A comparison of 9,430 people who had a vagotomy (removal of trunk or branches of vagus nerve) with
377,200 people from the general population revealed that individuals who had a truncal vagotomy at least five years before
were 40% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease than those who had not had the surgery. Study author Dr. Bojing Liu adds,
“These results provide preliminary evidence that Parkinson's disease may start in the gut…[but] much more research is needed
to test this theory and to help us understand the role this may play in the development of Parkinson's.” Neurology, April 2017
Diet: Diet Sodas May Pose Health Risks. A new study that included over 4,400 adults suggests that drinking one artificially
sweetened beverage per day increases the chances of stroke nearly threefold, compared with drinking less than one such
beverage each week. Lead researcher Dr. Matthew Pase adds, “We can't establish cause and effect, but our results suggest that
we look more closely at artificially sweetened beverages to see how they are affecting our bodies and what effect they might

Exercise: Stronger Muscles Pump Up Kids' Memory Skills. An evaluation of 79 children between the age of nine and eleven
indicates that those with greater muscle fitness also have a more accurate memory. Dr. Bradley Sandella, the fellowship director
for sports medicine at Christiana Care Health System notes, “I think we always think about the benefit of physical activity on

Chiropractic: Elite Skiers More Likely to Have Degenerative Disks. A recent study set out to identify MRI changes in the
thoraco-lumbar spine and the lifetime prevalence of back pain among skiers. Researchers compared the MRIs of 75 elite alpine
and mogul skiers, ages 16 to 20, with those of 27 non-athletes. The results revealed that while Alpine skiers had more
degenerative disk changes than the non-athletes, their overall risk for back pain was no different. However, the investigators
found that that when skiers did experience an episode of back pain, they reported that it was more severe in nature.

Wellness/Prevention: At What Age Can Children Safely Cross the Street? The National Center for Statistics and Analysis
reports that there were more than 8,000 injuries and 200 deaths in 2014 involving children under fifteen years of age who were
struck by a moving vehicle. In a new study, researchers simulated a realistic setting to assess the ability of children ages 6, 8,
10, 12, and 14 years to cross a busy road. The researchers found that younger children consistently had difficulty crossing the
street safely, with accident rates as high as 8% among 6-year-olds, 5% among 10-year-olds, and 2% among 12-year-olds. Only
the 14-year-olds consistently crossed the street safely. The study suggests that parents and drivers should pay extra attention to
