Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia

1. Czechoslovakia
● President Eduard Benes understood that if
Czechoslovakia was to remain independent
then it would be necessary to maintain Pro-
Soviet foreign policy
● Already some favor to Soviets as they saw
them as liberators
● Felt West had done nothing for them

2. Czechoslovakia
● Czech was however in high need of money
from Marshall Plans
● Czech Communists formed People's Militia to
put pressure on government
● Benes then formed Communist government
● Multiparty Czechoslovak state came to an end
● Soviet-style state set up

3. Yugoslavia
● Civil war broke out among partisan groups with
the Communists
● Josip Tito led fight against Royalist Chetniks
● Tito's Communists won

4. Yugoslavia
● Stalin did not trust Tito due in part to the the
British and American help he received during
the war
● Poor relations
● 1948 - official break took place
● Tito became West's favorite communist due to
independent foreign policy
● Maintained brutal communist style police state
