2. IVAN CAPP
IVAN CAPP is an acronym for the eight parts of
speech and stands for
Interjection, Verb, Adjective, Noun, Conjunction,
Adverb, Pronoun, and Preposition.

3. Noun
There are many different kinds of nouns. There
are
Abstract, Collective, Plural, Possessive, Singular
Possessive, Plural
Possessive, Common, Proper, and Compound
nouns. There are also anNOUNcers that are
articles which are A, AN, THE.

4. Adjectives
An adjective is a word that modifies, or
describes, a noun or pronoun. There are
Descriptive, Limiting, Predicate, and Proper
adjectives. There are also different locations of
adjectives like in front of the noun it is
describing. Another location is after a linking
verb which is also known as a Predicate
adjective.

5. Verb
Verbs are word used to express an action, a
condition, or a state of belief. There are action
verbs, both mental and physical. There are also
linking verbs and helping verbs which are
remembered by the acronym CHAD B. SWIM.
There are also verb phrases which are the
helping verb + the main verb.

6. Adverb
They modify verbs and other adverbs. They
answer the questions When? Where? How?
How Often? To What Extent? They also usually
end in “ly”

7. Pronoun
It is a “generic” word that replaces a noun.
There are personal pronouns, indefinite
pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative
pronouns, reflexive pronouns, and interrogative
pronouns.

8. Preposition
A word that shows a relationship between a
noun/pronoun and some other word in the
sentence.
• Preposition can be found anywhere in the
sentence.
• Usually prepositions have three to four words.
• Prep. Phrases tell you the location
• Prep. Phrases can be back to back.
• The middle word is usually an article
• It is anywhere a mouse can go or a bird can fly.

9. A conjunction is a joiner, a word that connect
parts of a sentence. Coordinating Conjunctions
are remembered by using the acronym
FANBOYS. For-And-Nor-But-Or-Yet-So.
Subordinating Conjunctions make a relationship
between the dependent and the rest of the
sentence. Some subordinating conjunctions
could be prepositions.
