CROP PRODUCTION AND
MANAGEMENT
DONE BY SHUBHAYU SINHA
What is agriculture?
The science which deals with the crop
production and management is known as
agriculture.
When certain plants of the same are grown at a
place, it is called domestication of plants or
agriculture.
How do green plants synthesize their
food?
The green plants are autotrophs which are able
to prepare their own food by the help of
chlorophyll in presence of light.
Green plants synthesize their own food by the
process of photosynthesis. The food and energy
is utilized by an individual organism for carrying
out various body functions , like digestion,
respiration etc. like other animals we also obtain
food from other sources.
Why we should grow food on a large
scale?
It may be easier to feed a few members of your
family. What would you do if you have to provide
food to the people in your locality, state or country?
We will have to produce food on a large scale. This
would require systematic and proper management
of practices of production and distribution of food.
A country should be self sufficient in food
production to feed its population.
What is crop?
The plants of same kind grown at a place is
referred to as crop (wheat, paddy).
Types of crop
Based on season crops are classified as ---
• Kharif crops
• Rabi crops
What are kharif crops?
The kharif season is based on south western
monsoon.
The crops grown during June to October are
called kharif crops (maize).
What are rabi crops?
The crops grown during November to April are
not based on monsoon. The crops sown during
this season are called rabi crops(wheat, legumes
like clover.)
A third type of crop, zaid crops are grown from
April to June. These are basically summer
season crops.
Example: cucumber, melons etc.
