This document provides an overview of maternal mortality in India. It begins with definitions and statistical measures related to maternal mortality. It then discusses trends in maternal mortality worldwide and in India, highlighting that India accounts for 19% of global maternal deaths. The main causes of maternal death in India are also reviewed. National programs and policies aimed at reducing maternal mortality are outlined. Several constraints to reducing maternal mortality are then described at various levels of the health system. Examples from other countries are provided to illustrate how some constraints have been addressed successfully.
