 This class is intended only as a demo
that explains how videos are created
and shared via Youtube.com and
Facebook.com.
 It is not primarily a “hands on” class.
However, the concepts and resources
provided can be used by business-
owners and parents alike to help you
learn to share videos.
 Basic introduction to YouTube.com, video on
Facebook.com, and creating video.
 Explain the most vital components of working with
video on both websites.
 Briefly describe how to upload videos.
 Provide a website where you can view the links and
slides that are presented today.
Optional: For those with prior computer experience
and an accessible email account, time will be
provided at the end of class to create a YouTube
account and/or upload a short provided video.
Optional items:
 A computer capable
of handling video
files
 A tripod for steady
video
 An internet
connection
 An online account
where you can place
the video
Necessary items:
 A working camera
with all necessary
components
 Portable lighting or
available light
 A storage device
(ex. DVD) or
internal storage
 Something to
record (ex. people,
event, etc.)
The most popular items
used to create video
for the web are:
A camera
• Video camera with digital video capabilities
• Digital SLR camera with video capabilities
• “Point & shoot” digital camera with video
capabilities
• Webcam
• Phone cam
Screen casting software that records your desktop
 .3gpp (Mobile)
 .avi (AVI)
 .flv (Flash)
 .mov (QuickTime)
 .mp4 (MPEG-4)
 .wmv (Windows Media)
At this time, these are the only file formats that are
supported by both YouTube and Facebook. If you
have video in another format it can typically be
converted via outside computer software into a
usable format.
 You should always follow
your camera manufacturers
instructions for creating
video.
 The process to create digital
video varies by camera type.
 However, there are some
similarities amongst cameras
that can create video.
 For example, (after you’ve
read and understand how
your camera works) you will
turn the camera on with the
power button or power
switch.
Power switch example
 Some cameras will also require you to:
◦ fully charge the camera’s battery
◦ insert a storage device (ex. SD card)
◦ choose “video” amongst the settings
◦ choose a video format type
 Typically, once you’ve set up your camera how you like
simply click the “record” button to start recording
 To stop recording press the stop button or “record” button
once more
 Recommended: In order to use your camera to its best
capabilities the camera’s battery should be fully charged and
the storage device should be clear.
 YouTube is a video-sharing website on
which users can upload, view and share
videos.
 Unregistered users can watch videos.
Registered users can watch and upload an
unlimited number of videos.
 In 2006, YouTube was bought by Google
and is thus now a Google product. FYI-
most Gmail users can access a YouTube
account with their Gmail information.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube
 Step 1: How to Create An Account
 Step 2: Use The Search Box
 Step 3: Navigate The Home Page
 Step 4: Work With Comments
 Step 5: Get Your Video Ready
 Step 6: Upload Your Video
 Go to www.youtube.com
 Click on the Create Account
button located on the top of
the page.
 Fill in the form.
 Go to your e-mail and click
on the hyperlink sent by
YouTube. Once your e-mail is
confirmed, you officially
become a member of the
YouTube community.
 Your YouTube channel is:
www.youtube.com/username
 Type in the item you are looking for and then hit the
enter key or click on the hourglass (search button) to the
right of the search box.
 YouTube will list all relevant video results.
 Note: It is important to understand how YouTube
catalogues items so you can find your own videos faster.
Videos – The most popular videos from across the web (mostly unsorted).
Music – Recommended and chart topping music videos.
Movies – Popular & recommended movies to rent (paid) or watch for free.
Shows – Popular shows. User & professionally created ones are showcased.
Trailers – Movie and game trailers (ads).
Live – Live TV, online, and news events that you can view via YouTube.
Sports – Popular sports clips from events around the world.
Education – Video learning center with, typically, user generated content.
News – Video clips of newsworthy items from around the globe.
Browse – Brings you back to the “videos” sections.
Upload – Direct button to get you uploading videos as quickly as possible.
 A comment is a text response to a video by a logged-in YouTube
user. Typically, a user would add a comment to a video after
watching that video. Note: You can only comment on a video if you
have a username and thus a YouTube channel.
TRANSFER
There are three ways in which you can transfer your
video files to your computer.
 The first is to download it via a wireless method
like a 4G connection. However, this method is often
slow and can cost money if you exceed your service
company’s data limits.
 You can also load a file storage device (ex. DVD)
into your computer and transfer the files from the
device to computer.
 The preferred method is to connect your device to
your computer through a cord and download from
the device directly to the computer.
You should always follow your camera manufacturers
instructions for working with, recording, deleting
and transferring video files.
Method Benefit Disadvantage
Wireless download Easy Slow & potential cost
Storage to computer Sometimes fast Complicated
Plug into computer Easy & typically fast Potential interruptions
 Click on the “Upload” button at the top of
the screen once you are signed in.
 1. Entire a new video
title here.
 2. Entire a quick
description of your
video here.
 3. Tag your item with
relevant keywords.
 4. Edit your privacy
settings here.
 5. Choose a YouTube
provided video
category.
 6. Change license and
rights ownership here.
 Facebook is a social media website that
people use to keep up with friends, upload
photos, and post links and videos.
 At this time, Facebook allows users to post
an unlimited amount of videos that have a
maximum length of approximately 15
minutes.
 Most Facebook users prefer to upload their
videos to YouTube and link the video to
Facebook.
 In order to add a personal video to Facebook
you will need:
◦ An accessible Facebook account
◦ Digital video in a format that Facebook reads
that is also under 15 minutes long
 You can upload a video directly to Facebook
from your phone via their mobile site or app
(unreliable).
 The preferred method is to save the video file
to your computer and then upload the video
direct to Facebook.
1. You initiate the upload process by clicking the
option at the top of the screen
once you are signed in.
2. You will be prompted to choose what type of
file you would like to either upload or create:
For video file upload or
creation with a webcam
3. Choose “Use Webcam”
if you would like
Facebook to search for
your computer’s internal
or attached webcam. Choose “Upload
Photo/Video” to upload a video file.
4. Click on the “Choose File” button.
5. Locate your file and click open.
6. Optional: change posting options.
7. Click on “Post” button to post video.
 Tag people by typing their name
in the designated area. If they are
on Facebook and have been
tagged properly they will see that
you have tagged them in your
video.
 Add location to video: where was
the video created? Simply type in
an address or popular
destination.
 Privacy Control: Use this to
manage who can see and
comment on posts you share.
When you change this setting, it
will remain at this setting for
future posts until you change it
again.
 A. Click the “Share” button located near the bottom
left corner of the video.
 B. Click the Facebook “f” icon in the sharing options
pane that appears.
 C. If you are not already logged in, log into Facebook when
prompted.
 D. Select where you want to share the video from the drop down
menu. For example, you can select to post it to a friend’s wall, your
own wall, or a in a private message.
 E. Click the “Share link” button to automatically post the video and
complete the process.
 We’re happy to introduce you to resources that will
help you learn the basics of editing short videos.
 Arlington Heights Memorial Library card holders can
also setup one-on-one 30 minute or hour-long
classes with a Digital Services Assistant to learn to:
◦ create a YouTube or Facebook account
◦ upload your personal digital videos to either
website
 We’re also happy to try to help with other issues
pertaining to video creation and sharing.

Power switch example
