This document describes the design and fabrication of a manually operated punching machine by a group of students. It contains the following key points:
1. The manually operated punching machine was designed and fabricated under the guidance of their mechanical department head. It uses a pulley system to convert rotary motion into reciprocating motion of a punch.
2. The machine can punch holes in metal plates ranging from 2mm to 25mm in diameter and 2mm to 4mm in thickness using various punch and die combinations.
3. The machine is aimed to provide students hands-on experience in designing, fabricating, and solving problems during manufacturing. It is simple and economical to operate compared to conventional powered punching

3. INTRODUCTION
1. A punching machine is a type of mechanical equipment used for punching holes in various materials.
The machine is consists of a punch & a die that are used to cut holes & shapes in the materials.
2. Punching machines are commonly used in manufacturing, construction & metalworking industries.
3. Punching is a metal forming process that uses a punch press to force a tool, called a punch, through
the workpiece to create a hole via shearing.
4. In industries, punching machines are operated with the help of flywheel.
4. ABSTARCT
1. Now a days, in industries there is a cut-throut competition, so most of the industries have powerful, fast
& accurate equipment machinery to withstand their more competition.
2. We made a punching press, it is a mechanically operated machine in which rotary motion is a pulley
get converted into a reciprocating motion of a punch and it punch a hole in a metallic plate according to
our required dimensions.
3. By this machine, we can punch a plate of size range 2mm-25mm (diameter) and a plate of thickness
2mm-4mm. By using various combination of punch & die.
5. AIM OF THE PROJECT
1. To prepare students mind that they should work individually as well as in team too.
2. To get the knowledge of each subject that has been studied in various subjects of earlier semesters.
3. To develop an attitude to enquire.
4. To develop skill for getting solution of various problems arising during manufacture.
5. To develop a skill of process plans & making decisions.
6. To develop an ability of report writing.
7. To develop interdisciplinary exposure.
6. The punch proper operates through a sequence of finely tuned steps:-
Setting up the machine by placing the metal sheet on worktable.
Adjusting the controls to set the desired force & depth.
Engaging the pulley , which moves a punch downwards to exert force.
The punch & die come into play , shaping or cutting the metal.
Withdrawing the pulley/Flywheel & extracting the newly formed part.
7. Components used in punching machine
1) Single v-group pulley
2) Two pedestal bearings
3) Helical spring
4) Ball bearing
5) 4 nut bolt set
6) Without thread bolt
7) Metallic base
8) Punch in various size
9) Punch die
8. ADVANTAGES OF PUNCHING MACHINE
• Easy to operate
• Less effort is required to punch Hole in a metal sheet of any material
• Less space required
• Simple in construction
• It is portable
• economical
9. DIFFERENCE
Conventional punching machine
I. Difficult to operate
II. External power is required
III.Difficult in construction due to more component
required
IV.It is costlier
V. It is non portable
VI.Heavy in weight
VII.Accuracy is high
VIII.It can be punch a plate having more thickness
IX.Used in mass production
Fabricated punching machine
I. Easy to operate
II. No external source required
III.Easy in construction due to less component
required
IV.It is economical
V. It is portable
VI.Comparatively light in weight
VII.Accuracy is less
VIII.Can be punch a metallic plate of thickness up
to 2-4mm
IX.Used in small scale industries.
