This is a recording of the online presentation titled 'COVID-busters: 7 tools for remote learning with Moodle' by Chad Outten from My Learning Space at Moodle Moot Global 2020 #MootGlobal20.
Abstract ///
In 2020, our world was changed by the coronavirus pandemic code-named COVID-19. Situations and events have emerged which, until now, were only imaginable in a Hollywood script.
The impact of COVID is without precedent in our modern times. Nothing and nobody has been spared. Every country, economy, business, household and individual - has been affected in some way.
And then, there's education. University campuses and schools have closed their doors. Students are attending lectures and classes, virtually. And office workers have been told to work (and learn) remotely, from home.
Many believe COVID represents a challenge for education. This is true. However, I also see an opportunity for a paradigm shift which empowers us to re-think the way we learn.
This presentation offers 7 tools to facilitate remote learning with Moodle.
In a time of great crisis - we need to be courageous. As educators - we can be the brave heroes. We are essential workers - in the front line.
Since discovering the joys of Moodle around 15 years ago, Chad has evaluated hundreds, probably thousands of Moodle sites, in a range of sectors, demographics and geographies - just a few sites were excellent, most were mediocre and some were plain terrible.
Based on his wealth of experience, Chad wants to share with you Moodle’s Secret Sauce: 5 key ingredients to help improve your Moodle site. And the result: better online learning, job performance and business outcomes.
Which ingredients are in the Secret Sauce recipe? Here's 5 key ingredients covered in this presentation.
1. Learner experience
2. Course design
3. Assessment
4. Reporting
5. Web responsiveness
Teamie creates a private social learning network for each organization that is accessible over the web and our Android & iOS mobile apps. Teamie provides a user-friendly environment for employees to learn from each other, collaborate on projects, and access their training anytime-anywhere. Teamie also equips training mangers with tools to enrich training with multimedia, save time through auto-graded assessments, evaluate learners through reports, and distribute certifications.

Making Groups Work: Practical Strategies for Accountability and Engagement - ...Andrea Stone
When students hear about group work, they often groan. Multiply that by the challenges presented in an online learning environment, and sometimes even the professors groan! With online course quality measures that recommend student interaction and group activities and calls to create classrooms that encourage collaboration and critical thinking, faculty need to find new ways to conquer group work dilemmas. This session offers practical strategies for facilitation of group work, both online and in-class. The session will include innovative ways to select students for group membership, techniques for management and accountability, and suggestions for group assignments. Participants will be encouraged to share their own tips and strategies for facilitating successful group assignments.
The learner is our customer, so as learning professionals we need to ensure the learner experience on our Moodle site is extraordinary. This presentation offers practical ideas to enhance the learner experience. Aspects covered include course design, assessment, reporting and mobile.
Moodle 1.0 was released in 2002. Since then, it has evolved from a small open-source project to become the world’s most popular learning management system.
At the speed of light, lets retrospect Moodle’s evolution during the past 15 years or so. Then, take a look at the current state of play and the future ahead.
For long-time Moodlers, this presentation will be a nostalgic journey down memory lane. For new(er) Moodlers, it will be a light-hearted and curious insight into where Moodle came from, where it is now and where it may be going.
Often times, learning experiences are either mandatory, too easy/difficult, boring, unrewarding or irrelevant. Education and training should engage the learner, however, the reality can be very different.
How do we make learning: fun, motivating and rewarding? Gamification is the art of applying game principles to improve non-game things. Without turning our course into a game, we may be able to borrow some principles from gaming to enhance online learner engagement and motivation.
Gamification is ubiquitous. You can find it everywhere these days, in business, work, education and life. The aim of this presentation is to illustrate ways to apply gaming principles to improve learner engagement and motivation.
This presentation shortlists 7 L&D trends. These are a collection of key observations, through the lens of a learning and development professional, working closely with organisations, reading literature, tinkering with technology and attending conferences during the past decade.
Online course activities such as assignments can be graded using rubrics, scales and feedback. Assessment data is pushed to the course grade book and learner progress can be tracked toward activity and course completion. These processes help educators measure the achievement of learning outcomes.
In this session, you will learn how to:
+Use scales and rubrics;
+Grade and feedback assignments;
+Understand the course grade book;
+Track activity and course completion.
Discussion forums should be part of the staple diet for every online course. They promote collaboration and interactivity as participants exchange ideas, ask questions, get answers and work together. Forums are flexible, fun and easy to use.
In this session, you will learn how to:
+Post course-related news and announcements;
+Create different forums types for specific purposes including general discussion, Q&A, single simple discussion and each person posts one discussion;
+Configure settings including subscription, read tracking and post thresholds;
+Use forums in more creative and less conventional ways.
Uploading files such as documents, presentations and spreadsheets to your online course helps promote information sharing. Adding multimedia such as images, audio and video can further enhance learner engagement and participation.
In this session, you will learn how to:
+Upload files to an online course;
+Create web pages - the easy way;
+Add documents and multimedia from sites such as Google Docs, Flickr, Youtube and Wikimedia.
When your organisation decides on a particular learning management system (LMS) software, you will need to consider look and feel, including effective course design and how users will interact with the LMS.
In this session, you will learn about:
+Appearance - theming to represent your organisation's brand;
+Navigation - via breadcrumbs, menus and blocks;
+Accessibility - for desktop, mobile and tablet devices;
+Personalisation - user profile, dashboard and individual customisation;
+Structure - course settings, format and layout.
The LMS administrator is responsible for settings that impact all users, courses and data. Proper configuration helps ensure a secure, stable and optimised LMS environment.
In this session, you will learn how to:
+Create users and assign roles;
+Manage courses;
+Configure plugins;
+Select themes for standard, mobile and tablet devices;
+Maintain data security and information privacy;
+Run global reports.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Editor's Notes
The year is 2020, & our world has been changed by the coronavirus pandemic code-named COVID-19
Situations & events have emerged which, until now, were only imaginable in a Hollywood script
According to UN: “COVID-19 is the defining global health crisis of our time & the greatest challenge we’ve faced since WWII”
Acknowledge, COVID is a challenging time for every body. It’s a shared experience
The impact of COVID is without precedent in our life times
Nothing & nobody has been spared. Every country, economy, business, household & individual - has been disrupted in some way
In a matter of months, it is like a tsunami rolled in - & washed away many lives & livelihoods
And then, there’s the MASSIVE impact on education
According to Harvard Business Review, globally speaking, > 1.6B students have been impacted, representing 91% of all students in the world
University campuses & schools have closed their doors. Students are attending lectures & classes, virtually
And office workers have been told to work (and learn) remotely, from home
This image depicts a traditional classroom in 1850s
It was a by-product of the industrial revolution
Do you think this kind of classroom - still exists today ? In many cases, yes !
The school is a physical environment
Students are taught in large batches
Classroom organised in lines & rows
Curricula is standardised
This old school model is somewhat akin to – mass production line in factory
And now, with the arrival of COVID – and social distancing measures – the old school model – has been disrupted
Many believe COVID represents a major challenge for education. This is true.
However, I also see an opportunity for a paradigm shift - which empowers us to re-think the way we learn and work
It’s taken a global pandemic - to get us thinking differently about education
If it’s ok with you, I’d like to talk about some positives
COVID has improved our sense of community, collaboration and cooperation
Poll or Chat
Think about the benefits of COVID ?
-WFH
-remote learning
-greater flexibility
-less commuting
-less emissions
-less stress
-greater work/study/life balance
Segueway…
So, with all this disruption to the traditional education system,
How do we – as educators – continue to deliver quality education ?
I’d like to bring your attention to UN SDG #4 = Quality Education
On same token, Moodle mission: empower educators to improve our world
So, as Moodle educators –
what can we learn from COVID - that will enable us to continue delivering quality education ?
I believe there are 7 key pillars which form the foundation of quality education, whether it be face-to-face, blended or online. This is my model.
Resources
Communication
Collaboration
Assessment
Accreditation
Reporting
Accessibility
In line with the pillars of education, I’ve hand-picked 7 tools to facilitate remote learning with Moodle – 1 tool per pillar
Poll or Chat
Which of the following tools – are you most using ?
H5P
Forum
Web conferencing
Workshop
Badges
Learning analytics
App
Tool / H5P
Tool / H5P
An open-source content creation tool
Easy to use
Interactive
Engaging
People some times ask me, if they were to learn one content type – which provides best ROI ? – I recommend interactive video
Tool / Forum
For centuries, – the Forum was the centre of daily life in Ancient Rome
The site of processions, elections, public speeches, criminal trials, commercial affairs & gladiatorial matches
Likewise, in modern times, in Moodle, the forum is an essential place - for remote learners to:
Ask questions, get answers, share ideas & help others
I don’t know if you have ever noticed this?...every new Moodle course automatically gets one activity – it’s a forum
Tool / Web conferencing
This is about human connection. Even more important in these times - of isolation
Share: voice, video, screen, chat, files, polls, recording etc.
Poll or Chat
Which web conferencing tool do you mostly use ?
BBB
Teams
Zoom
Other
There are plugins for Moodle
BBB /
Open-source
Browser not app
Requires a web server
Teams /
App
Requires subscription
Integration with M365 and Moodle
Skooler
Zoom /
App
Integration with Moodle
Requires (Business Plan) subscription
Tool / Workshop
Workshop is a peer assessment activity which fosters a sense of cooperation & interdependence
Learners submit their work, then receive submissions from their peers – which they assess according to marking guide or rubric.
5 phases:
Setup
Submission
Assessment
Grading evaluation
Close
Tool / Badges
How do you recognise & reward learner achievement?
Badges are an easy way to incentivize learners
When learners are motivated – they feel a stronger sense of purpose toward achieving a goal
eg. completing a Moodle course or activity
Tool / Learning analytics
LA help educators make informed decisions about learning & learners
With remote learning - this is especially important for educators - because we need to know whether (or not) our learners are engaged
Identifying learners at risk of failure - enables educators to intervene via DM– in a timely manner
Tool / App
I don’t know if you are aware? 80% of global internet use – is mobile!
And with the recent spike in remote learning, it can be predicted – MANY more learners will be accessing Moodle via mobile & tablet than desktop or laptop
The app gives learners freedom & flexibility to access learning anywhere at anytime, without being bound to a classroom or office
In closing, COVID represents a major crisis for all of us. It’s a shared experience.
As educators, we are ESSENTIAL WORKERS - in the front line – it is our duty to continue delivering quality education
The OLD school model has been disrupted
Are YOU willing to be COURAGEOUS ? [Pause]
Then, embrace a NEW model of education - with innovative tools such as Moodle
And YOU - will be the HERO
