This document discusses the use of technology in counseling. It outlines various technologies like phones, video conferencing, and social media that counselors can use. Technology allows counselors to reach more clients, especially those in rural areas or with disabilities. It also lets counselors share resources online and connect with other professionals. However, some counselors fear using technology or lack knowledge on privacy and confidentiality. The document provides ways to overcome these fears and notes legal implications like ensuring privacy and informed consent. It emphasizes that not learning technology does a disservice to clients by limiting communication options.

Higher Education Cheat Sheet - 4 Challenges Facing IT & How to Overcome themKate Rogerson
It’s an exciting but challenging time for IT departments in higher education.
The introduction of new technologies into education is rapidly improving the student experience and outcomes. 60% of students agree that technologies introduced since Covid-19 have improved their learning and grades. However, on the other hand, IT departments must now juggle an ever-growing digital infrastructure and the security issues that come along with this.
If this wasn’t enough, IT departments must also provide fast and convenient support to students and faculty who are learning how to use these new technologies, alongside the typically high general support requests.
With many new challenges facing IT, this guide will explore the 4 most common ones and what IT departments can do to overcome each of them.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. 2. Types of Technology
CellPhones (texting & calling)
Video Conferencing
E-mailing
Blogging
Microsoft Office (PP, Excel, Word,
OneNote, etc.)
Social Media (Twitter & Facebook)
3. Why We Use Technology In
Counseling
As a bridge to reach a larger client base,
including clients who live in rural
environments, those who have disabilities,
those who are afraid of potentially
bumping into other community members
at a counselor’s office and those with
social phobias who might not leave
home.
To connect with members of the
community who aren’t already clients
4. Why We Use Technology In
Counseling cont.
Allows current clients access to additional
helpful information outside of session
Counselors could also post book reviews, top
10 lists related to certain topics, links to
community resources and links to videos
Because an estimated 25 percent of people
search for health information online
effective networking tool that allows
counselors to connect with other professionals
in their communities
5. Why We Don’t Use Technology
Fear of how to use types of technology
Set in our ways and not wanting to
change
We lack the knowledge of how to keep
our client’s information confidential
We don’t have support from
administration
6. Ways To Overcome Fear
Attend community workshops that explain
how to use technology
Take a technological course at a local
college
Ask the student to assist (they may be the
expert)
Practice, Practice, Practice
7. Pros of Using Technology
reduced the stigma for some clients
counselors can post resources and
information online
Can break down some of the barriers that
typically prevent potential clients from
showing up at the office door
allows for more flexibility, both for the
counselor and the client
8. Cons of Using Technology
boundary issues
very easy to set unknown expectations
lack of understanding of the hidden messages
we might send when using the technology
concern over whether the client really is who
he says he is
the task of setting up an emergency plan
easy to get sucked into being connected to
your work at all times
9. Legal Implications
Encryption and secure servers and virus
protection are essential
counselors must take time to understand
privacy settings and to stay on top of if and
when those settings change
Informed consent needs to be inclusive of all
the threats to confidentiality
have a social media policy regarding
whether you are going to friend or follow a
client and vice versa
10. What We Need To Always
Remember
Bychoosing NOT to learn about
technology we are doing a DISSERVICE to
our clients/students and shut the door on
the different opportunities to
communicate outside of face-to-face
