Rethinking Search Results from a UX PerspectiveBrian Frank
Post-secondary education websites have evolved a lot over the past decade. Search results pages have hardly changed. We’re long overdue to envision better ways to help users find what they’re looking for, faster and with fewer frustrations.
By looking at tested examples of user interfaces from ecommerce and other industries, we’ll explore ideas for radically rethinking the search experience on post-secondary websites. We’ll also discuss tips for using research to guide these decisions and avoid copying design patterns that aren’t suited to post-secondary information or user needs.

The overuse of technology may have a more significant impact on developing children and teenagers. On the other hand, it has numerous advantages easier, faster and more effective communication, better, more efficient manufacturing techniques, less wastage, more efficient stock management and ordering systems.
Data analysis is one of the revolutionary technique that has been the base for further lot technologies and industries. It is important and is structured in a disciplinary manner in order to produce essential results. Concept includes static algorithms and particular set of work methods but the result is always dynamic.
Once you’ve made the decision to leverage AI and/or machine learning, now you need to figure out how you will source the training data that is necessary for a fully functioning algorithm. Depending on your use case, you might need a significant amount of training data, and you’ll want to consider how that is labeled and annotated too.

[Case Study] Physician, Know Thy User: Using Personas to Target Content and U...Scott Abel
Presented by Joe Sokohl at Documentation and Training Life Sciences, June 23-26, 208 in Indianapolis.
Ever have a project fail? You met with your project team, you talked with the customer, you reviewed technical requirements. But did you talk to your users? Just as one diagnosis doesn’t fit all patients, one application’s approach doesn’t work for all users. Know who accesses your information and uses your applications. Only then choose your features. Using a case study of a multinational project covering four countries, 10 business units, and tens of thousands of content elements, we’ll explore personas, scenarios, and other user-centered techniques. We’ll look at identifying users as well as segregating content according to users and regulatory needs.
What was involved in this cases study?
First we analyzed the 10 business units and their approaches and definitions of business goals. Next we analyzed industry standards for medical devices and their usage.
But that wasn’t enough. We interviewed 40 people in 4 countries, and created an information architecture prototype. We then tested this prototype in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and on site where medical devices were in use.
Based on this contextual inquiry, we refined the architecture and our understanding of the users. Decisions were then made on what type of content would be both appropriate and legal for each user and in each country.
Only with a solid understanding of the users and their goals could we define a flexible, extensible, and usable information and content architecture.
Hardware is hard(er): designing for distributed user experiences in IoT - Claire Rowland, www.clairerowland.com
Designing connected devices and hardware-enabled services is significantly more complex than pure software. There are more devices on which code can run, connectivity and data sharing patterns to consider, and often multiple and varied touchpoints for users to interact with. Pulling this all together into a coherent experience involves strong collaboration between design and engineering, and a systems thinking approach to UX. In this talk, we’ll introduce what designers need to know about the tech, what engineers need to know about UX for IoT, and how to facilitate the whole-collaboration needed to create great products.

Maximising the opportunities offered by emerging technologies within the chan...Livingstone Advisory
The Australian University sector is heading down the path of seemingly inevitable and fundamental change in both its operating model and role within society. The forces at play are numerous and diverse, fueled in part by the capabilities of modern technologies. These include factors such as increasing global competition for tertiary students, the shift towards a self-funded corporate operating model whilst having to retain academic independence and rigor – all in an environment of the increasing commoditisation of knowledge and intellectual property through emerging vehicles such as MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses).
In the midst of these structural changes, how well Australian Universities navigate through the current swathe of emerging and potentially disruptive technologies whilst mitigating the longer term systemic risks associated with their adoption is not necessarily a trivial exercise.
In this session, Rob Livingstone offered some practical insights into how CIOs of ‘the University of the future’ can play an active part in helping their institutions thrive in the new environment by maximising the upside potential of new and emerging technologies with known cost and risk, whilst simultaneously managing the multiple versions of reality that exist in the new IT environment.

Editor's Notes
FIRST – For those of you who have mot met Deb and me – we REALLY like technology! We’re always game to try the next new thing and do what we can to stay aware of the latest and greatest. We do know, however, that technology shouldn’t drive our decisions. The next “shiny new object” is always around the corner to distract us from our job, which is to identify a gap, need, or problem in our career practice and then select the best tool/solution for the job. It’s important to take control of these decisions, and become more informed about the options that are out there. That being said ….
… today we want to share with you a wide range of technologies we think will have an impact on how we solve problems, and help clients solve problems in the future. You’ll see some overlap as we go – bear with us as we attempt to interpret trends and translate buzzwords, so that you have resources that help you take control of tech integration in your context and make the best decisions possible
These are the activities we engage in, and thus, technologies we choose should support these.
App-ortunity – to reinforce what we are doing in session (cognitive restructuring, journaling, reminders)
Nimble – respond in time
Casual, conversational tone
Give the option to not interact with a bot (automated phone directory system- no one likes those)
Discover patterns, trends, to find new opportunities and make the most efficient use of resources.
Big data: the vast amount of data that is now being generated and captured in a variety of formats and from a number of disparate sources …for enhanced insight, decision making, and process optimization.
how to protect privacy
how to lock mobile device
how to erase data if device is stolen
how to handle requests from apps for permissions to share information, access private information, etc.
(lead in to the afternoon session) – last, but certainly not least in this section of our presentation on current trends … social media is still going strong.
We’ll move into more detail, and provide a few suggestions for how you can work to answer these questions in our session later today.

The basic trick involves a stage that is specially arranged into two rooms, one that people can see into or the stage as a whole, and a second that is hidden to the side, the "blue room". A plate of glass (plexiglass or plastic film) is placed somewhere in the main room at an angle that reflects the view of the blue room towards the audience. Generally this is arranged with the blue room to one side of the stage, and the plate on the stage rotated around its vertical axis at 45 degrees. Care must be taken to make the glass as invisible as possible, normally hiding the lower edge in patterning on the floor and ensuring lights do not reflect off it.
