Childhood adversity casts the longest shadow across the entire human life cycle with lifelong pervasive impacts. This presentation integrates three ways to investigate these issues using a mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) approach: (1) retrospective quantitative epidemiological studies of Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) by Fellitti and associates and the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) headed by Marmot with the WHO; (2) quantitative child psychiatric epidemiology prevalence studies, focusing on Canadian studies in two provinces: the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS) (Boyle, et al, 2019) and the Quebec Child Mental Health Survey (QCMHS) (Bergeron, et al, 2000); and (3) Bruner’s more qualitative narrative approach integrating work from developmental psychology and anthropology (Mattingly, et al., 2008).
After a brief overview of North American and worldwide comparisons in child psychiatric epidemiology whose populational surveys of 6-14 year old children show a worldwide average of 20% affected with mental health problems, the focus shifts to Canadian studies in Ontario and Quebec. A detailed portrait of the Quebec survey contrasts the overall Quebec population results of 15% prevalence of mental health problems in children versus the alarming rate of 60% in a sub-study of the disadvantaged neighborhood I have worked in for the last 20 years. This sub-study offers a complex portrait of the negative impacts of ACE and SDH.
My own sub-study of single parent families in the same disadvantaged neighborhood demonstrates that SDH are multifactorial and multigenerational, affecting both more intimate family attachments and broader social belonging. Informed by ACE, SDH and QCMS studies, our community-based child psychiatry program works on more complex and subtle social determinants affecting children’s lives: narrative resources based on the work of Jerome Bruner (Mattingly, et al., 2008), which are rich and nourishing when present yet lead to the impoverishment of affective and social capacities throughout the lifecycle in their absence. Canada’s response to global disasters has been characterized by a certain degree of push and pull between the domestic and the international levels, and between the provision of immediate relief and the support of long-term resilience and risk reduction. In the area of disaster risk reduction, progress at the international level since 2011 has been marked by a sustained movement away from reactive and relief-based approaches toward “disaster risk governance”. As a signatory to the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, Canada has been a supporter of this move as well as the move to integrate disaster responses with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), blurring the boundary between “relief” and “development” activities and policies. In this talk, I will explore the meaning of ‘disaster risk governance’ as it is addressed in the Sendai and Hyogo Frameworks, and consider practical examples of how a shift toward governance might improve disaster responses by the Canadian government, and in turn, reduce loss and damage from disasters.

Communicating About Climate Change
Climate change has become a hot-button issue in mainstream American politics, and people are divided over its causes, impacts, and solutions. This presentation will offer an overview of how the public views the issue of climate change, several explanations for these differences in perception, and possible approaches for bridging the gaps through innovative communication strategies. I will also present some initial findings from a NSF funded project aimed at communicating about climate change and its long-term association with the issue of agricultural runoff in the Maumee Watershed area of Ohio.

Climate change has become a hot-button issue in mainstream American politics, and people are divided over its causes, impacts, and solutions. This presentation will offer an overview of how the public views the issue of climate change, several explanations for these differences in perception, and possible approaches for bridging the gaps through innovative communication strategies. I will also present some initial findings from a NSF funded project aimed at communicating about climate change and its long-term association with the issue of agricultural runoff in the Maumee Watershed area of Ohio.

class. (b) Almost no genetic polymorphisms have been
discovered that are consistently associated with variation
in IQ in the normal range. (c) Much has been learned
about the biological underpinnings of intelligence. (d)
“Crystallized” and “fluid” IQ are quite different aspects of
intelligence at both the behavioral and biological levels.
(e) The importance of the environment for IQ is established
by the 12-point to 18-point increase in IQ when children
are adopted from working-class to middle-class homes. (f)
Even when improvements in IQ produced by the most
effective early childhood interventions fail to persist, there
can be very marked effects on academic achievement and
life outcomes. (g) In most developed countries studied,
gains on IQ tests have continued, and they are beginning in
the developing world. (h) Sex differences in aspects of
intelligence are due partly to identifiable biological factors
and partly to socialization factors. (i) The IQ gap between
Blacks and Whites has been reduced by 0.33 SD in recent
years. We report theorizing concerning (a) the relationship
between working memory and intelligence, (b) the appar-
ent contradiction between strong heritability effects on IQ
and strong secular effects on IQ, (c) whether a general

- 1. Communicating climate change: science, risk, attitudes & behaviour Adam Corner School of Psychology, Cardiff University Climate Outreach Information Network (COIN)
- 2. What is climate change communication? 1. Clearer presentation of the science/impacts of climate change? >>>scientists, fact-based engagement 2. Public engagement (attitudes, behaviours) with climate change as a societal risk? >>>social scientists, value-based engagement
- 3. Knowledge about climate change • General scientific literacy? Not really (Kahan et al, 2012) • Knowledge about climate science specifically? To some extent (Tobler et al, 2012) • But perceptions of climate change are not primarily driven by knowledge about the subject
- 4. What predicts views about climate change? • Demographics – gender, race & age (McCright & Dunlap, 2011) • Political ideology – (Lewandowsky, 2012) • People filter the facts through their own prior beliefs (Corner et al, 2011) • The weather…the recession… ‘elite’ cues from politicians etc
- 5. Specific challenges for communicating climate science • Uncertainty equated with ignorance – re-frame as ‘risk’? (Pidgeon & Fischoff, 2011) • ‘Psychological distance’ between the risk and the individual (Spence et al, 2011) • Extreme weather events – a paradox for communication about climate change
- 6. What influences sustainable behaviour? • Not simply attitudes>>behaviour BUT don’t discount them altogether • Huge amount of behaviour (and cognition) is habitual • Single behaviours (and individuals) do not exist in a vacuum (Corner & Randall, 2011)
- 7. Values for sustainable behaviour Schwartz (1992)
- 8. Social norms
- 9. Fear and guilt • Messages based on fear/threats are only effective if the threat is personal, direct and can be mitigated… • Smoking >> lung cancer = yes • Climate change >> sustainable behaviour = no (Hoog, Stroebe & de Wit, 2005)
- 10. Communicating CC impacts on health • US research: Public health frame of CC produces stronger emotional reaction, possibly better for Republicans (pollution/poor health) • Disentangling CC >> health relationship analogous to weather >> climate? • Values for sustainability = values for health?
