2. INTRODUCTION
What is bad custom?
➔ Custom is a traditional and globally appreciated code of acting something. It is
specific to a particular society, place and time. Practice of conduct established in
a community,locality, by long usage and obligatory on those within its scope
having bad effects on it is called bad customs. There are many good customs as
well in society in the name of culture such as loving juniors, respecting elders,
participating in each others festival,etc. Simultaneously, there are many bad
customs prevailing in society in the same of culture. Some of them are:- daijo
pratha, deuki pratha, jhuma pratha, jhuma pratha,etc. Such bad customs hamper
the smooth functioning of a nation which ultimately hampers development
progress in society.
3. Daijo Pratha
The property and money brought by a bride to her groom family on her marriage is called dowry.
Physical and mental torture is given by the husband and his parents to a woman for not bringing of
sufficient dowry. Many married couples are splitting due to not fulfilling the demand husband and his
family. Many times, the husband and his family attempt to murder the woman. Polygamy has
increased due to this system. This bad custom is practiced all over Nepal. It is creating lots of
obstacles in society. This must have to be eradicated from the root of its practice.

● Strict law should be implemented.
● Social boycott to such defendant.
● Should be discouraged by everyone from the society, from the
nation.
● Awareness programs should be conducted.
6. Untouchability
➔ It is a practice in which people are discriminated on the basis of their caste, culture, religion,
tradition, social norms and beliefs, sex, etc. and kept as untouchabe at distance. Untouchables
are not allowed to touch touchables,enter their home, use public properties, etc. This
untouchables are considered to be impure. It increases social conflict, causes social
discrimination and division, lessens the social goodwill and cooperation, causes loss of social
value and prestige, causes discrimination in opportunity and facility, and the victim feels self-
humiliated and inferior.
7. SOLUTIONS
● Awareness programs being conducted.
● Effective laws being implemented and formulated.
● Positive discrimination provision.
● Running the programs to increase collaboration, cooperation and goodwill.
● Social inclusion must be maintained.
8. Ghumto Pratha
● It is a custom of covering face by the married women with a shawl and saree when they are
in front of men and elders. It is covered such that men cannot see her face. Unless she
bears the first baby she is not allowed to defecate in bright. This system is prevailed in
Terai region of My country Nepal. Because of this pratha almost all the women are
deprived of moving ahead, getting education and opportunity. This custom can be reformed
by education, social awareness, social and political pressure.

10. Deuki Pratha
● Deuki pratha is a custom practiced in hilly region of Nepal where young girls are offered to Hindu temple.
The parents offer their own daughter to temple to gain religious benefits. It is done when one is suffering
from dreadful disease, do not have son to fulfill needs,wishes and demands. Rich peoples buy girls from such
parents and offer in temple, such girls are called deuki. Deuki is unfit for marriage and has to depend on
worshippers offerings to the temple. She has to suffer from various obstacles such as lack of education, no
skill and insufficient income. Many of them are in fact driven to survival sex in which sex is traded for
fulfilling basic needs, demands, cleanses sins and bring fate.

12. Jhuma Pratha
● In this tradition, second daughter is offered to the monastery which is practiced in Sherpa community living in
mountain region. The girl offered in such way are called jhuma. She has to spend her whole life taking care
of Gumba. She neither can marry nor enjoy her human fundamental rights. This system of practice should be
discouraged by increasing the provision of education and awareness, strict law and increase in employment
opportunity.
13. Chhaupadi Pratha
● This system is prevailing in rural areas of Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces of Nepal where women has to live
in a chhau ghoth located away from home during girls menstruation time period. This is difficult as well as unsafe
for them to live in chhau ghoth. Menstruation is a natural process and is misinterpreted as untouchable condition
and women are compelled to live in an unsecured hut and in dangerous situations. This is totally superstitious
custom. Likewise, women suffer from snake bite, physical pain, attack of wild animals and ill-treatment of
criminals. Therefore, this custom should be discouraged by increasing awareness, maintaining gender equality,
provision of co-education where both females and males should must be educated equally, and women
empowerment.
