Family
 Family
 The family unit in Pakistan, at the moment, does not
appear to be an acute social problem. It is showing
symptoms of a social problem in our urban areas,
which is clear from divorce rate, defective
socialization of children, unadjustment of married
couples and unhealthy parent-children relationships.
If the negative forces working against the sacred
and private institution of family and marriage are
not checked, it may pose a serious problem in the
time to come. Almost every member of society is
involved in one or the other way in this problem.
Following are some of problems which can be
pointed out in case of family and marriage
institution of our society.
Problems for Family and
marriage institution
 changing status of women,
 marital adjustment,
 parent-children relationships,
 selection of partner,
 broken families.
• Changing status of women. The traditional and classical status
of women is changing, i.e. from slave or silent spectator in
important family affairs to a friend or companion of husband.
The statistics show that more girls are entering into careers
suited to them. Rising responsibilities of womenfolk outside
family unit may lead to many socio-psychological, socio-ethical
and moral problems. It may further result in the disorganization
and confusion in social order. There should be limited and well-
calculated liberty for women in a county like our’s.
 Blind imitation of a West may be avoided in family and
marriage institution.
 There should be a complete overhauling of our
educational system especially female education and
socializational process.
 Revival of old religious values regarding family and
marriage institution.
 Limited and restricted liberty for womenfolk.
 Wise Governmental policies like family laws must be
encouraged and implemented in the real spirit.
 Connection of family must be based upon
reality, practical utility and facts; and not
constructed on the basis of abstract wishful
thinking.
• Marital Adjustment: The problems of
unadjustment or maladjustment of married couples
is emerging in our society. This may be due to
changing status of women, changing concept of the
family, loose kinship ties, lack of religious
education, and emergence of materialistic values in
society. Generally romantic/love marriages have
limited scope and choice of selection of the partner
and there is less time interval for expected wife
and husband to adjust themselves to new roles.
There is less degree of informal control over couple
in case of exogamous forms of marriages. Such
marriage is between two individuals and not two
families. The element of childlessness, absence of
male child or excess of children, barren wife or
impotent husband can also be the causes of marital
unadjustment of couples.
Remedies
1.Discouraging of early marriages.
 2. Selection of partners should be made through
arranged marriages.
 3. Divorce procedure and grounds for divorce
must be strictly religious.
 4. Exogamous forms of marriages should be
discouraged.
 5. Husband/wife relationships should be based
upon mutual love, sympathy, affection, sacrifice and
education.
 6. Marriage contract should be life-long and not
casual, temporary and segmental.
 7. Too much modernization of family unit should
be discouraged.
 8. There should be occasional recreation and
outings for the couple.
Parent-children Relationships
 A new problem in some of the families is
emerging in which partner-children
relationships are not healthy and sound. Such
families are producing problem children. Such
children become problem for neighborhood,
community and society. The family unit turns
into mess and becomes a means to certain
ends and not an end itself. The children
develop insecure self, defective personality
and so many psychological complexes. The
family becomes an arena of quarrels,
misbehavior and even physical manhandling.
Remedies
 Family unit must be considered by all the members and end in
itself and not a means to certain ends. The relationship among
children and parents should be whole time, based upon love,
recognition, intimacy and sacrifice, and not doubts, uncertainty
and fear etc. The socialization process and techniques should be
in accordance with the normative order of society and culture.
Each child should be gives personal attention and care. The
parents should know that to do be husband or wife, father or
mother is as technical as other professions. They should not
behave before the children who are against ethical and moral
standards of society on one hand and, on the other hand none of
the child in the family should feel neglected.
 Democratic cum-authoritative approach is paying for the proper
socialization of the children in a country like ours. The parents
and children should know that they are to live for another. They
are not parties but members of the same unit having different
roles to play to bring good name the for family.
Broken Family
 A family where either husband/wife is dead or
is separated from each other is called broken
family. If any of the partner is not devoting
much time for the children is also be termed as
a broken family. The number of such families is
increasing in our urban areas.
 Effects. It is the seed bed of problem children
and delinquents and later on professional and
organized criminals. The elements of quarrels,
feuds and physical violence are common in
such families, which minimize the chances of
harmonious and peaceful life for its members.
The realization of self, socialization and
formation of children’s personalities are always
abnormal in such families.
Remedies
 Due consideration should be given to children
and their needs before mother takes job
outside the family unit.
 It is better not to produce and unwanted child
at all.
 Conscious, rational and objective approach is
required before young boy and girl enter into
marriage to avoid separation, divorce and
unadjustment later on.
 Marriage is more than mere biological
relationships of husband and wife.
 Parents should be models for their children.
 Family unit should contain all the essentials of
a primary group
Dowry
 The practice of dowry got favorable climate form Hindu
culture, in which the girls do not get share from the
property of their parents. Among Muslim the girls do
have definite share from the property of their parents.
Since newly married couple has to run an
establishment so they require some help and
assistance. But such a help should not be a source of
trouble, financial crisis and worries for girl’s parents.
There should be some limit to the extent of dowry.
 Effect: Beautiful, physically and morally sound girls of
marriageable age who belong to lower middle or middle
classes do not find suitable and proper partners. This
creates many psychological, sociological, emotional and
economic problems command much respect in the eyes
of in-laws. Girl’s parents usually run into heavy
indebtedness. A vast majority of parents is facing with
the problem.
Remedies
 Reorganization of society through social welfare
associations should be done.
 There should be limit on the extent of dowry and
ban on its exhibition under laws of the state.
 Much attention is to be paid to the personality traits
of the girl and not main consideration to dowry.
 Cooperation of Bradari head’s and local heads and
leaders should be sought.
 Muslim population should follow the footprints of the
Holy Prophet in this respect.
 Girl’s parents should not make the dowry a matter
of their false prestige and honor.
 Government “will” to ban dowry.
• Selection of Partner
 The selection of partner is becoming a serious
problem both in rural and urban areas of Pakistan.
The practice of exogamy, rapid socio-cultural
changes, education, social mobility and democratic
Remedies
 The selection of partner must be made on the
basis of class, religious status, sectarian
feelings, economic status, age, mental
outlook, personality traits, health, education
status and family background.
 Evaluation of emotional make up of the
prospective partners must be done.
 Old friendships of families can be used for this
purpose.
 Services of friends, well-wishers and relatives
can be utilized to find suitable partners.
 Both boys and girls should not be crazy for
their ideal life partners.
