The Difference water can make is an interesting documentary that entails
two people; Lorna and Tom who take on a challenge and you can join
them along the way.
‘The Difference water can make will air on BBC 1 at 20:00.
Have you ever wondered what the correct amount of water is to drink
each day? Have you ever wondered the benefits of drinking water to your
health or even the benefits of doing just 15 minutes of exercise a day?
Then you’ve come to the right place. Water helps to keep us hydrated and
energized everyday which would make you think that it is the worlds most
popular drink as in wealthier countries such as the USA and the UK, it is
easily accessible. However, Coca Cola wins the competition for the most
popular drink with an average of 1.7 billion servings of Coca Cola products
being consumed everyday by the population.
“That’s always been a bit of a puzzle to me”
The difference water can make is a documentary which has two people,
Lorna and Tom who set out on a two week challenge to find out the
benefits of drinking the recommended daily intake of water and doing 15
minutes of exercise each day. They were determined to finish this
challenge. They had filmed themselves at stages talking about how their
experiences over time had changed through the challenge from their
problems to their perks of doing the challenge. They both had anticipated
that it would be difficult to do the challenge as they both enjoyed drinking
a lot of other beverages such as Tea, Milkshake and Orange juice along
with the odd fizzy drink here and there. They also didn’t do too much
exercise before starting the challenge so predicted that they would find
that quite tiring and boring over time but were committed and wanted to
try and complete this task. They had done research into this topic before
they had begun and here are a few statistics and facts about water which
they had found out: 2 Litres of water should be consumed everyday in
order to feel the full benefit and to keep you as hydrated as you should
be. By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has already lost over
1 percent of its total water amount. Also drinking water is very useful in
weight control as it is a brilliant substitute for high calorie beverages,
which is why a lot of healthy individuals drink a lot of water over fizzy
drinks like Coca cola or Fanta. About 20% of your daily water intake comes
from the food which you eat each day. Drinking water provides you with
clearer, healthier skin and when you sweat your muscles begin to lose a lot
more energy so drinking water can provide your muscles with more
energy. Here are some of the facts and statistics they had found out about
exercising before hand too: Doing exercise actually begins to lower your
stress levels once you have began doing it. There has been research which
has shown that doing
exercise can help slow or even help prevent heart the odds of getting
heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis and
osteoporosis which is very beneficial to your health. People who suffer
from depression could lessen their symptoms by 47% through aerobic
exercise after just 12 weeks! Exercising increases the functionality of your
immune system. Exercise helps you sleep easier and better, reduce your
risk of colon cancer, helps eliminate lower back pain and even helps relieve
and prevent migraines and headaches.
Diary Entry 4
Tom: I really need a cup of tea! I’ve gone from having a cup of tea
everyday to having none a tall and I feel really drained and down because
of it. I am finding it very difficult but I’m managing to carry on and the
exercise is becoming easier but I am looking forward to the challenge
being over
from work as well because I feel a lot fitter and healthier and we’re only 8
days in!
Here we were able to get an interview with Julie Maitland where we
asked her some questions.
How much would you say you should drink and why?
Expert: Now that’s always been a puzzle to me because I hear different
amounts.
Do you push the students to be active and healthy and In what ways?
Expert: We have a health ambassadors group and they are there to
promote health issues among the student population
Conclusion
Tom: Overall the challenge was quite difficult and I found it a bit troubling
at times because I didn’t know if I would actually be able to complete it.
But I believe that it did make me feel much better from the start to the
end, but it hasn’t really changed my beliefs much. I think that to be truly
healthy you are going to have to maintain a healthy diet because just
drinking water and exercising is not going to be enough to keep you fit. If
you eat too much of the wrong kind of food, no matter how much water
you drink, no matter how much exercise you do; its still going to take a
toll on you. I do think just drinking water and excising, just even a little bit
ever single day, it does change and it does make you feel a lot better but
just not to the full extent that you need.
