2 Week Challenge
The Difference water can make is an interesting documentary that entails
two people; Lorna and Tom who take on a challenge and you can join
them along the way.
‘The Difference water can make will air on BBC 1 at 20:00.
Water helps to keep us hydrated and energized everyday which would
make you think that it is the words most popular drink as in wealthier
countries such as the USA and the UK, it is easily accessible. However,
Coca Cola wins the competition for the most popular drink with an
average of 1.7 billion servings of Coca Cola products being consumed
everyday by the population. 2 Litres of water should be consumed
everyday in order to feel the full benefit and to keep you as hydrated as
you should be. Thomas Groves and Lorna Yates decided to take on a 2
week challenge of drinking the full daily amount of water everyday and
nothing else, on top of tis they did 15 minutes of exercise each day to see
whether that would further benefit their health. We have some of the diary
entries that they had made throughout the challenge.
Diary Entry 1
Tom: It’s the first day of the challenge and I have already had 3 glasses of
water and it’s only 11:30 in the morning! I’m not finding it difficult as of
yet but I do feel like I will eventually get bored of plain water. I feel a lot
more energized than what I would normally do at this time of the morning
and I did an extra 5 minutes exercise because I had so much energy.
Lorna: I feel a lot more awake and ready for the day. I’ve had 2 glasses of
water since being awake and I do feel very energized!
Diary Entry 4
Lorna: I’m really enjoying the challenge! I do feel a little bored of water
and it is getting harder as the week goes on but I’m starting to notice
some changes to my health like I’m able to walk up the stairs a lot easier
and the exercise is getting easier which is great.
Tom: I really need a cup of tea! I’ve gone from having a cup of tea
everyday to having none a tall and I feel really drained and down because
of it. I am finding it very difficult but I’m managing to carry on and the
exercise is becoming easier but I am looking forward to the challenge
being over
Diary Entry 8
Tom: It’s getting easier but I still can’t wait for my first cup of tea once the
challenge is over! I have noticed that I feel more awake and I’m able to do
more challenging things throughout the day like walking up the stairs and
going for runs.
Lorna: I’m really enjoying the challenge but it is getting harder and harder
as the days go on especially there weekends when I’m at work it’s hard to
try and drink the correct amount and keep hydrated whilst I’m there but I
am trying my hardest! I am finding it easier to walk home from work as
well because I feel a lot fitter and healthier and we’re only 8 days in!
Diary Entry 12
Lorna: Only two more days! It has gone so quickly it’s crazy and I have
noticed how easy it has become because drinking two litres each day has
became part of my daily routine as well as doing 15 minutes of exercise in
the morning before college/work or before I go to bed. I do think that I
will try to carry on drinking the daily-recommended amount everyday
because I have enjoying it a lot and want to continue living this health
lifestyle.
Tom: I’m definitely going to carry on doing 15 minutes of exercise
everyday because I feel a lot fitter and like I can do a lot more physical
tings than what I found difficult before like running up and down the
stairs. I feel a lot healthier and more hydrated everyday from drinking 2
litres per day. I’ve had more than 2 litres today actually I’ve had 2 extra
glasses so I’m even more hydrated!
We have also had the chance to interview Tom and Lorna post challenge
to see how they are feeling and if they’re happy with the outcome of the
challenge!
What did you find the most difficult thing during the challenge was?
Tom: Knowing that I couldn’t have a cup of tea or glass of coke was very
difficult so that was probably the most difficult thing for me.
Lorna: Probably having to do the 15 minutes of exercise everyday, as it
was quite difficult trying to alternate with which exercises I wanted to do
whether it was jogging or sit ups.
Have you continued to drink the 2 litres of water everyday since the
challenge ended?
Lorna: I have been drinking a lot more water than what I would normally
have. I’m averaging about 3 small bottles a day whilst I’m at college and
then other drinks like milkshakes and fizzy drink when I get home. I’m
trying to balance the amount of other drinks that I drink as well as the
water so I can still get the benefit of the water.
Tom: I used to hardly drink any water but now I drink between 1 and 3
glasses a day but I’m sticking to the tea for now.
Did you have fun creating the documentary as well as doing the
challenge?
Tom: Yes!! The production of the documentary was great fun because we
got to go out and interview people and find out whether people knew the
effects of drinking a lot of water and doing the challenge was also great
fun!
Lorna: I really enjoyed creating the documentary it was loads of fun we
had to do a lot of research about the kinds of people we should interview
and the facts and stats we should include
Here we were able to get an interview with Julie Maitland where we
asked her some questions.
Expert: I try to drink water regularly throughout the day.
How much would you say you should drink and why?
Expert: Now that’s always been a puzzle to me because I hear different
amounts.
Do you push the students to be active and healthy and In what ways?
Expert: We have a health ambassadors group and they are there to
promote health issues among the student population
Conclusion
Tom: Overall the challenge was quite difficult and I found it a bit troubling
at times because I didn’t know if I would actually be able to complete it.
But I believe that it did make me feel much better from the start to the
end, but it hasn’t really changed my beliefs much. I think that to be truly
healthy you are going to have to maintain a healthy diet because just
drinking water and exercising is not going to be enough to keep you fit. If
you eat too much of the wrong kind of food, no matter how much water
you drink, no matter how much exercise you do; its still going to take a
toll on you. I do think just drinking water and excising, just even a little bit
ever single day, it does change and it does make you feel a lot better but
just not to the full extent that you need.
