Editor's Notes
When we plan conventions for our Lions, we need to consider two issues that I would like to address in the next 10 minutes.
First,
Why Should We Have a Good Convention ?
How Do We Entice Lions to Attend ?
There are many reasons lions should be interested in providing good conventions for our members. Clubs are by virtue of our constitution and bylaws expected to participate in governance by providing voting delegates for our conventions.
Our Multiple Districts and Districts should be examples of good governance for our Lions – the models for our zones and clubs.
The manner in which we conduct business at our conventions sets the standard for volunteer governance for our clubs. While many Lions have extensive experience and training in governance in the business world, governance of volunteer groups is somewhat different. Conducting a good convention, which clearly adheres to policy as well as bylaws provided education for club level leaders.
But volunteers are rarely motivated by to attend a conference because they believe it will be an example of good governance – that is simply a secondary benefit.
Volunteers are motived by a vast array of factors when deciding if they will or will not attend a convention.
Each of you participating in this webinar are motivated by a variety of factors:
Volunteers are motived by a vast array of factors when deciding if they will or will not attend a convention.
Often we need to promote the benefits of convention attendance that our outside of the governance obligation.
Networking
Learning from others about service projects, fundraisers, and Lions opportunities are often motivating.
Opportunities to build partnerships between clubs
Recently we surveyed our Lions with regard to that very questions.
Unfortunately our motivation was reactive rather than proactive. From our experience I hope that you can learn the importance of the proactive approach.
Other = personal contact with organizing committee
The results suggest to us that most expect to pay registration fees that essentially cover the costs of the meals. I’m sure your responses would vary, but it is interesting to know the perceptions of the population you are serving.
Our survey revealed that 59% of those not attending could have had financial support form their home club’s administration, but still they were not planning to attend. ….Cost alone is not a clear deciding factor.
What would motivate A Lion?
Both non attending and attending Lions ranked membership and No-Lions speakers as their top two interests.
Door Prizes, entertainment did not motivate.
