The document discusses conventions for Digipak album covers and analyzes three album covers. Digipaks became popular in the early 2000s and are designed to promote artist sales through extra features like DVDs, lyric books, and photos. They give fans more reasons to purchase physical copies over digital downloads. The analysis finds that two covers prominently feature the artist's name and image to identify them as the focus, while background elements relate to the artist's genre and themes. Font size and color are used intentionally across the covers analyzed.
2. In the early 2000s, Digipak-style cases
became popular amongst record labels and
recording artists.
The aim of a Digipak, used by record
labels, is to promote the sales of the artist,
in the same way the video does. However,
its features gives fans multiple reasons to
buy a CD rather than just downloading the
content via a website such as ITunes. It is
usually used for special editions or re-
released albums in the form of a CD box,
that gives fans more features compared to
a regular CD.
A Digipak is usually created as a 4 or 6
plate folded piece of card with a CD case in
the middle. It also commonly includes: A
DVD
Lyric Book Artist photos or Imagery
List of Songs Overall a Digipak is a creative
product that is made to appeal and intrigue
fans as well as people who take an interest
in this type of music.
3. Artists name is the largest
text on the cover it shows
the importance that the
audience know her name as
this is her debut album so
its important audiences
then start to recognise her
as the artist rather than the
performer. The use of the
capital and bold letters
make it stand out and blend
with the image.
The main image is of the
artist herself in a medium
close up shot. This is
effective as the image is
placed at the centre point of
the page again showing that
she is the most important
part of the cover the
costume is simple being a
white blouse along with the
makeup which Is very nude
looking so it doesn't take
away all the attention from
the mastheads. The makeup
and colour scheme is also
reminiscent of earl 1950s
suburbian house wife looks
which is a link into the
genre of the music.
Album title is placed at the bottom of the page in a
significantly smaller font to the top text of her name. the
text is overlaid on her blouse which is a cream / off white
colour in order for the audience to still see it clearly
although its placed just under her boobs where we can
still quite clearly see the bra through her top. This
obviously relates to Laura Mulvey and the male gaze
theory and shows the artist wants to broaden her target
audience
The boldness of the blue
sky allows the text to stand
out more against the
sharpness. The use of the
white text against the blue
could also represent the use
of clouds which is why the
text doesn’t look out of
place or just stuck on there
as opposed to if she used
another bright colour like
yellow or orange as the
colours wouldn’t go hand in
hand with the theme and
colour schemes and
potentially look fake
The setting of the cover
looks quite plain which
could potentially be the
reason why it was chosen so
the main element which is
Lana stands out. There's
also a vintage car in the
background which brings it
back to the genre. There's
also a depth of field editing
onto the fence and car in
order to show its not in
focus or of importance the
image itself
4. Instead of having the Artists
name in bold letters it has a
a logo which establishes a
brand in which the audience
cling onto, the use of the r
symbol is of course the
initial of the artists name
and allows masses to
recognise it as a Rihanna
stamp showing she's an
established artist
The main image is of the
artist in an extreme close up
the shot shows only a
glimpse of her upper body
which links to Laura
mulveys theory as she
appears to be naked. This is
also typical of the r&b genre
as its provocative this is
also supported by the
smoke blowing out of her
mouth which has
connotations of tobacco or
marijuana which is heavy in
the hip hop culture it shows
she's a rule breaker and that
she has a care free attitude
which again for the
audience creates her
ideology
Album title is placed at the bottom of the page in a small
text again similar to born to dies album packaging
although the text is in newspaper like font to show the
theme of how newspapers “talk that talk” on rihanna
about things that are not true in the media its a direct
personal joke by the artist. The text is also layered onto
her body just above her breast s. Surprisingly the text
here is the thing that stands out the least
Their is no use of
background due to the
extreme close up of the
image. The artists hair
appears t be messy and
naturally in her face
covering up half of her left
eye. She also has minimal or
if not no makeup on
showing how care free she
is and almost going against
the Mulvey theory by
wanting to appear as a sex
object and appear attractive
The parental advisory is
again a convention of a rap
album as most rappers have
a strong use of heavy
swearing and vulgar
language. The media
portray women as innocent
and pure whereas this
shows a woman in a a
different light it shows
rihanna wants to break the
stereotypes and conform to
her ideology in which she
creates for herself rather
than following conventions
5. The main image is of the
artist herself in a long shot.
This is effective as the image
is placed at the centre point
of the page again showing
that she is the most
important part of the cover
its also showing her full body
showing the themes of the
album could be more
personal and that she's
putting everything out there
hence the title. The artist
doesn't make specific eye
contact with the audience.
She also has he eyes closed
and hand on her cheek
showing she's feeling
emotional
Artist name is in a
reasonably small basic font it
doesn't stand out on the
cover at all and it looks quite
minimalistic compared to
the main image that stands
out maybe this was done in
order to give the image the
full attention although in my
opinion I am not a big fan as
I feel like the audience don't
establish the cover with the
artist as easy
Album title is placed on the left to the logo in a
different font again it goes a miss against the large
image and looks more washed out perhaps to show the
washed out of the emotions as everything feels abit
down low and minimalistic in order to create a mood or
an effect the audience can take away with them.
The background is of a
deep dark blue or almost
navy colour which isn't
typical of the pop genre
and was not an
expectation when
analysing a pop artist
album cover. The dark
blue connotes
connotations of being in a
sad or depressed state of
mind which is the
complete opposite with
what we conform to the
pop genre this shows a
breaking of the
conventions
The setting of the cover
looks quite plain which
could potentially be the
reason why it was chosen so
the main element which is
ariana stands out. the
costume is minimalistic and
all black while showing a
significant amount of her
legs, arms and stomach its
seductive while playing it
safe something heavily
present in the pop culture
world
6. Conclusion
From this analysis I have concluded that I am definitely going to
use an image of the artist herself what type of shot I have not
decided but i feel it would be more conventional to use an image
rather than it be abstract as it will be a debut album cover
I have also decided that I would like to include the artists name and
the title of the song in bold lettering as I have found from my
analysis that this type of lettering and capitalisation makes more of
a statement as such to stand out to the audience
In my opinion I think it would be right to possibly include a
parental advisory sign on the front as the song has bad language in
and also explicit content in the video. It then sets the agenda and
makes the audience aware of the specific niche its catered towards
which is 16-24 year olds
I may also include some form of logo like rihanna did for her “talk
that talk” cover as i believe its effective in creating a brand
