Pictures - In peculiar shapes (long rectangles) the pictures are all in different
styles and have different colours to make them interesting, some feature a
black and white filter, cropped photos - enigma - want to see the rest of the
image - (Barthes) - more than one image shows there's a bunch of articles -
satisfies cognitive needs
Title - ‘contents’ is not in original place it is placed below the 6 images,
challenging codes and conventions, in the middle of the page but still stands
out, serif font, capitals, space around (not crowded so easier to see)
Page numbers - larger numbers above each sub heading directing you where
to go, numbers easy to find and navigate to, also numbers directing you to
where each image is on each page
Text sections - each section of text represents a different page, giving the
reader a summary of where they would like to go in the magazine, use of
hermeneutic text ‘how does your garden grow?’
Colour - the black text is easy to read on the white background

3. Cheshire Title - ‘content’ written as the biggest font on the page however in a light grey
so does not stand out as much as the black coloured text
Sub title - this is just below the main title and is written in an italic serif font
and is a harsh black, it’s a lot smaller than the title however bigger than the
other chunks of text on the page, current date, keeping us aware of the
present - uses & grats
Columns - the text is written in columns to make this easier to navigate and
look neat and tidy on the page, each chunk of text in the columns has a
subheading to tell you the category of those pages - wide range of cognitive
needs
Images - there are 7 images places around the page which borders two sides
of the page, each image has a number in one of their corners, some have
people in and some have objects, they do not seem to link to each other at
first glance, use of long shots and close ups, using a lot of images shows a
lot more articles - satisfies cognitive needs
Page numbers - each page number is located next to some text which would
be telling you what the page is about, they are placed on the left of the text
with a line splitting the text and number therefore it's easier to read the
number next to page (there are also page numbers on the images)

4. Kent Sizing - this is a bigger contents page therefore takes up two pages of the
magazine
Images - there are six images dotted around the page of various different places
and people, each image has a bit of text which link each other together. One of the
images is a tiny version of the kent life front cover, more than one image shows
there's a bundle of articles - satisfies cognitive needs
Columns - the text is in columns but the columns are dotted around the page and
are various different length unconventional, challenging the regional magazine
Magazine title - this is placed small in the right top hand corner, it stands out
slightly more than the other text as its slightly larger, authoritative
Page Number - these are all located down the left hand side of the columns, some
are in blue circles which are the features of the magazine.
Text - the text is in a small font, each page has a subheading and then a summary
of what’s on that page underneath, each chunk has a large amount of space
between the next, tells reader what's inside each article - satisfies cognitive
needs
Date - current date, keeping us aware of the present - uses & grats
Colours - a white background which black texts so it stands out with hints of blue

5. Surrey
Title - the title ‘contents’ is at the top of the page, in serif font, black to stand out against the yellow
background, underlined to display to the audience this is what the this pager is about.
Text - the majority of the text is written in a centre column with images surrounding it, the main text
(page numbers and page titles) is written in a white font, this still stands out against the yellow
background, the texts are a mixture of black and white giving monochrome effect, lists of what's inside -
wide range of cognitive needs
Page numbers - these are written next to the pages titles down the left side, in white font, this makes
them easy to navigate.
Magazine name - this is written in a bigger font but is placed lower down the page than the main title.
It’s in the same font as on the front cover.
Images - the images are placed on the outer sides of the page leaving space in the middle for the text,
there are four images placed one under the other on the left side of the page, including a close up and a
long shot. Then there is one other image on the other side which is cropped to a thin shape, however
this is an Ad banner, this is a close up of a women face, the blackness of the background contrasts the
yellow of the background of the rest of the page, a lot of varying images - implies array of articles -
satisfies cognitive needs

6. EXCLUSIVE
Title - rotated 90 degrees, written down side of page, white, capitals, enlarged font,
overlapping an image, challenges common codes and conventions
Main image - takes up majority of page, no specific object in focus, however composed
in away which suggests you’re being lead into the magazine, the opening door is
inviting you in...The rest of the images are displayed differently, one in a template of a
polaroid, another cropped to be a circle, and the rest just cropped to be squares with
white borders, each picture has a page number next it, a large amount of images -
therefore a lot of articles - satisfying cognitive needs
Text - written in one skinny column down the left hand side of the page,black text.
Subheadings, in capitals, divides what each chunk of text is about, listing what's inside
magazine giving info - satisfying cognitive needs
Page numbers - numbers placed next to each chunk of text, easy for reader to navigate,
numbers are in a bold font, black to stand out against the white background. Also their
are page numbers in white bubbles connected to each image letting them know where
the image lies in the magazine

7. The Bristol Magazine Title - serif font, large font, black, stands out against the white
background, placed just below three medium sized images
Date - next to title, light green, serif italic font, lets audience knows the
age of the magazine,current date, keeping us aware of the present -
uses & grats
Images - three images placed at the top of the page alline with each
other, all the same sort of colour scheme, not one drastically pops out,
they take up approx a quarter of the page, a small image placed at the
bottom of the page, front cover of the magazine
Text - there’s two main wide columns, colours of text = black, green,
variety of capitals, serif font, italic text in place, the flow of the text is
downwards, wide range of info - satisfying cognitive needs
Page numbers - placed next to the lines of text, made sure they are
separated from the text, so don’t get mixed up therefore easy to
navigate to. Also large numbers, white, placed on the images

8. Codes and Conventions of the Pictures
● All the images from the regional
magazines are shot in high definition,
with a lot of light, thi gives the images
a bright look which makes it more
appealing to the eyes.
● The images are a variety of sizes,
most of the contents pages I looked at
had a main large image and then a
few smaller images, however a few
just had different pictures but all the
same size.

9. Codes and Conventions of the text
● All the texts are based in columns,
generally they have a few columns going
across the page, however there were a few
magazines i looked at which did not meet
these conventions; there were certain
magazines with just little paragraphs
however in columns format and some only
featured on column.
● Most had a subheading above each chunk
of text to tell us the main feature as to what
the page will be about (this subheading will
usually be bigger and bolder).

10. Codes and Conventions of the page numbers
● All the page numbers were placed next to the
text to let the audience know where to find
that article in the magazine, normally to
conform to the same font as the generic text,
however may vary in size to the text.
● Placed on the photos are larger numbers
which overlap the photo these are larger and
more eye catching, The are a bit more
unusual than just a simple text and may have
an interesting font.
