After feedback suggesting more color, I made minor text color adjustments and added a coupon to fill empty space before selecting a patterned background image to add depth without overcomplicating the design.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.

Construction of my media magazine – front cover
- 1. CONSTRUCTION OF MY MEDIA MAGAZINE – FRONT COVER I used the program Adobe Fireworks to create my magazine.
- 2. This is the 1st stages of the front cover of my magazine. As I have now chosen the colour scheme and the title of my magazine, all is left is to put everything onto the magazine. This is the main layout of my design. For the top section, I used a brush tool with the 3 different colours. I simply drew a line with the colour then smudged it with the ‘smudge tool’ to get the, what looks like, a fire effect.
- 3. The next stage was to add my image. I used the image which I had previously edited and now I feel looks very effective on the front cover.
- 4. Taking everything into consideration I decided to flip the image horizontally. I made this choice as having the image facing the left meant it was going to be very hard to place the writing down the left 3rd (which is obviously essential for magazine creating). By flipping the image I am now able to write down the left hand side.
- 5. FINALLY, it’s beginning to look like a magazine. I have now added in the head line story, with other main stories down the right hand side.
- 6. I have now changed the colour of the main head line story, I have done this as I feel it did not stand out enough. I think it is much better now as it does not take over the page but it stands out enough for the audience to be intrigued by it. I have also made the ‘WIN RIZZLE KICKS TICKETS’ much clearer by placing it in its own box so that it can catch the readers eye immediately. It is also placed on the left hand side therefore will be shown when stacked on the shelves at shops. Finally I have made the colours of the text on the left hand side alternate after each story. I feel this does help the audience read the magazine much clearer.
- 7. FINAL DESIGN The final changes I made to my magazine was firstly to put a ‘drop shadow’ on both of the guitarists, I think although only a slight change helps to give depth to the two images. Secondly I added in the price to the top right hand corner and changed the colour of the text to black so that it can stand out more so. The final, most obvious change is the fact I changed the background. I felt having a plain white background looked very bare and needed some slight colour. I tried a few colours but a block colour didn’t look effective. I used a gradient effect to give the background a slight hint of red which takes the whiteness off. I think it works well as the left hand side has been left white therefore makes the text much clearer.
