Connectivism

Editor's Notes

  1. This presentation is about connectivism, a course that I am taking at the University of Manitoba. I would like to explain the concept by using a modified PechaKucha. By this I mean that I will try to limit my total presentation to 20-25 sec per slide. Let’s see if it works.
  2. Connectivism is a learning theory promoted by Stephen Downes and George Siemens, it is called a learning theory for a digital age, At its heart, connectivism is the thesis that knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and therefore that learning consists of the ability to construct and traverse those networks.
  3. According to George Siemens, "Connectivism is the integration of principles explored by chaos, network, and complexity and self-organization theories. Learning is a process that occurs within nebulous environments of shifting core elements – Learning is not entirely under the control of the individual.
  4. In connectivisim, learning, which is defined as actionable knowledge, can reside outside of ourselves such as within an organization or even a database. Learning may reside in non-human appliances. This is the part of the theory that I disagree with.
  5. My paradigm for learning is that its evidence occur in many levels, from unicellular organisms (, to specialized cellular communication of a complex organism, such as the neurons of the brain. Beyond the individual, there is some evidence of social learning, In essence, there is individual learning; there is organizational learning, and social learning as well.   
  6. In evolution, one of the most preserved characteristics acorss species is the ability to CONNECT. Plants and animals evolved a broad range of communication and connectivity tools such as rhizomatic roots, chemical signals, and language. The need to connect is a primal drive that evolution has conserved because it allows the species to survive.  
  7. When are we connected? Stephen Downes mentioned 3 elements of the network:a. entities - the connected things that send and receive signalsb. connections - the links between entities (can be physical or virtual)c. signals - the message sent between entities There should be a 4th element: FEEDBACK. It is only in feedback that we are assured that the message is received. With FEEDBACK, we are assured of a connection. 
  8. Another important aspect of connective learning that it is democratic and is controlled by the learners.  But herein lies the challenge of managing the crowd. When the learners are tasked with not just learning but of becoming generators of information and sharers of knowledge, how certain are we of the quality of that knowledge that is being passed?
  9. The internet has threatened the university system of education by seemingly able to distribute knowledge for free. Internet connectivity allows the community to compile their own knowledge. There is Wikipedia for instance. Even this presentation is part of a community driven knowledge formation.
  10. According to Manuel Castell, "Whenever there is domination, there is always resistance to domination. This is the only general law of humankind." In the movement to be liberated from traditional modes of education, does the internet represent this resistance?
  11. In connectivism, the world becomes your classroom and every social media become a learning tool.  They are free and accessible, thus contributing to the concept that the internet is a counterpower to learning versus the university-based learning. The power struggle then tilts towards the nontraditional.
  12. Connectivism is driven by the understanding that decisions are based on rapidly changing foundations. New information is continually being acquired.  The ability to draw distinctions between important and unimportant information is vital, as well as the ability to know when there is a need for information. These are aspects of information literacy.  
  13. CONNECTIVISM is the conscious formation of networks, which allows each learner to sort into locations various bits of knowledge that they will need to access the process of learning.   A good learner can discern a valuable connection from less valuable ones.   Meanwhile, it is not true that the group, including the connections between the members, are always learning.       
  14. To make connectivism meaningful to learners, we were asked to construct a Personal Learning Network.  PLNs are not simple graphical representations of connections that exists between an individual and his learning environment. Rather, they are an articulated and much-analyzed interaction between the learner and his environment.
  15. In my attempt to organize the course in my mind, I drew this concept map. There are two main dimensions by which I mapped the concept: one was the virtual and technological resources that were utilized in the process,  The other demonstrates the openness due to hardware and networking apps particularly of learning and social media. 
  16.    The vertical increasing openness owing to pedagogical tools such as research and development of informational literacy. It is interposed with increasing openness of hardware that creates the physical connections that allow participation in unbridled networks.   They work hand-in-hand to create an open and liberal minded learner     
  17. The horizontal shows intellectual, philosophical, and pedagogical contribution to the process, such as various learnwares, research, net pedagogy and informational literacy, The net pedagogy and the group of net-based applications and programs contribute to the technological "savviness" of the learner.  
  18. I hope that I am successful in showing that the module of CONNECTIVISM is a journey that allows one to not just experience but also to analyse the confluence of elements that results in one being an empowered and well-rounded learner.  It is a journey that is conscious and self-accountable.
  19. Connectivism gives us the tools and the consciousness to navigate in the wide array of connections.  Hopefully, from the chaos that is the internet, a connected learner will be skillful in navigating both the technology and the learning paradigms so that he will be an effective and an empowered learner and person.
