Connecting People and Places
3.1 How do people perceive places?
Class Task
Think of a favourite place in:
your community
Your town
In a rural setting
Find a photograph or image that represents each
image
Make notes explaining the qualities the place has
and what it means to you
List the reason you connect to your place
Exchange your images with another student.
Consider if his/her favourite place have the same
meaning for you.
Class Task...
Answer the following questions:
Are your places and reasons unique to you?
Did someone else list similar places?
If so, what were their reason for doing so?
Discuss the different places chosen and the
reason why they were picked.
Will these places change significance throughout
your life?
What is place?
Somewhere that you identify with and attach
meaning to.
Places are: parts of the Earth’s surface that are
identified and given meaning by people.
A place can be small as your bedroom or as large
as continent.
It can be a constructed feature , such as a
building, or a naturally existing feature such as a
lake or forest.
What are spaces?
Space refers to the way in which features are
arranged on the Earth’s surface.
The shapes and patterns in which things are
arranged on the earths surface.
Geographers often use maps to explore and
explain the arrangement of the Earth’s surface.
Interconnections between places
We all create places of our own by defining them
and giving them meaning, and all of these places
are interconnected.
No place exists in isolation. Not even a rock in a
mountain riverbed or a single tree is isolated.
Every place is interconnected with another.
The place you live is connected to a
neighbourhood, the road outside the school
connects it with different suburbs and entire
continents are connected to each other in many
ways.
Natural features, human activities (trade,
transport, communication) which move services
Work Sheet 1....
Answer the question on the sheet in your books.
The different ways we connect with
places.
Geographers use different models, tools, and
strategies to understand and explain some of the
ways people perceive place. There are three
main methods:
1. Asking Questions: Ask question about the
location. Why does it exist? Is it a sacred site?
Perception can lead to different opinions about
what might be a suitable way to treat or use the
place.
The different ways we connect with
places.
Geographers use different models, tools, and
strategies to understand and explain some of
the ways people perceive place. There are three
main methods:
2. Using geographical models: to explain patterns
and analyse their significance. Bus timetables etc.
The different ways we connect with
places.
3. Applying a set of geographical criteria: to
understand the reasons by grouping them into
similar categories, including:
Spiritual: factors related to a person’s belief
Economic: factors related to employment and
income
Cultural: factors related to the shared
characteristics of a group of people
Historical: factors related to the past experiences
and events
By classifying places we can better understand
important interconnections to place.
Work Sheet 2...
Work through the sheet.
Connecting People and Places
3.2 How do people connect to different
people and places?
The things we do, see, use and
consume
We are connected to people and places all around the
world in many ways. This includes being connected
by:
The food we eat
The music we play
The clothes we wear
The goods in our homes
The sport we play
The movies we watch
You are the most mobile generation in history, travelling for
work and for leisure more often and more quickly. As
well as physical and cultural connections there are also
digital connections. You are a Global Citizen.
How technology influences
interconnections
The internet allows people to connect with other
people in different places more quickly and
conveniently than ever before.
Internet – 2.1billion internet users
Social networking sites – 2.4 billion accounts
Facebook – more than 1 billion accounts
Youtube – 48 hours of footage every minute
250 billion emails sent every day
500 million Google searches every day
Twitter – 250 million tweets a day
Internet in real time
Class Task
How has technology helped to break down the
distance between places and provided new
opportunities for making connections. (focus on how
modern technology helps with communication)
Think about your own experiences regarding the
following and make notes:
groups you belong to online
How technology is giving you the opportunity to express
yourself in different ways
How technology is giving you the opportunity to
collaborate and problem-solve with other people
How technology is giving you the opportunity to
exchange ideas and opinions with other people
Other benefits of technology
Digital access around the world (developing
nations)
Connecting with remote areas
Work sheet 3 -
Connecting People and Places
3.3 How does trade connect people and
places?
Global trade connections
In the last 50 years or so there has been an
explosion in the amount and value of goods traded
within and between nations.
Today, homes contain many items made in other
countries and we tend to shop globally. (ebay, online
shopping) When your grandparents were your age,
almost everything bought were made local.
Trade between nations is valued at US$18 trillion a
year:
Around 6000 planes in the air right now
Approximately 17000 cargo ships crossing the worlds
oceans
More than 1 million kilometres of railway track
2 million kilometres of gas, oil and water pipeline
Australia’s mining connections
Australia is linked to many places in the world
through the goods and services produced here.
Over 60 percent of our exports are minerals and
fuels such as iron ore, coal, gold, crude oil, and
aluminium. The mining boom was caused by
three factors:
1. Increases in demand for Australian minerals from
china and India
2. Australia’s vast mineral wealth
3. Australia’s willingness and ability to export
minerals
Multinational companies
One of the most common factors linking us
around the world to people in different places is
the movement of goods and services. Because
these businesses operate in more than one
country they are called multinationals.
Companies include
Apple
McDonalds
Coca-Cola
Nike
Adidas
Global connections inside your
laptop
Parts within a laptop
come from:
Canada
USA
Mexico
Peru
Chile
Brazil
Argentina
Colombia
South Africa
Zimbabwe
Australia
Russia
Kazakhstan
Tajikistan
Indonesia
South Korea
Japan
China
Kyrgyzstan
Tajistan
Connecting through food
Advantages Disadvantages
Learnt to make food
more efficiently to
respond to demand
from overseas orders
Any others?
People can import
food from other
countries taking away
from our farmers
Any others?
Major Task 1.
Think of a technological development that has
enabled you to connect to people or places in
other regions. Create a report using a medium of
your choice by completing the following:
Describe how you use this technology to
connect with people living in other areas.
Provide examples of how you interact with
people from different places
Explain how your perception of people or places
has changed because of this connection and
provide examples.
