Disruption is the talk of the town - breakthrough technologies are, well, breaking through everywhere and everyday. What can firms do to mitigate the risk of being disrupted? By disruption! It's no easy task to 'eat oneself' and often there will be serious barriers (culture, technology etc.) for doing so. As we are moving fast from industrial production and economies of scale, economies of experience and service design become the critical assets: The customer experience! The customer experience must seek to integrate the digital with the physical. Your customers already swaps seamlessly between the two, so should you! With mobile as more than just another channel, customer experience must also focus on creating 'mobile moments' (of truth) where customer needs are foreseen and fulfilled across the omnichannel. Key is to provide a platform on which users can interact and co-create. Providing the winning platform will position you as the gatekeeper, 'owning' the customer (as the saying goes) and safe guard against new entrants and disruption. Enable collaboration to take this digital transformation the last steps.

CeBIT Social Business Arena keynote - Strategic building blocks for your Dig...David Terrar
Standing in fir Dion Hinchcliffe who was called away, this was the opening keynote in the CeBIT Social Business Arena. My idea was to do three things. First give the Agile Elephant view of the current complex and disruptive digital landscape. There is a wave of change affecting every business and some key issues to be understood that are driving the need for digital transformation in every industry, every style of business. I go through 20 years of a world gone digital and recommend 3 books to help make sense of where we are. Secondly present 8 strategic building blocks to enable transformation, with the emphasis on practical things you can do, and specific areas or factors that your organisation needs to address.
Lastly, leave you with a core message that is vital for the 21st century enterprise - and that is that you need to be in a state of continuous reinvention to make sure that some smarter, nimbler competitor doesn't make use of technology or new business models to take away your market.

Digital Workspaces and the Customer ExperienceeG Innovations
Customer experience is driving the digital age, and with the number of digital workers exploding the bar for assuring the digital user experience is quickly being raised — and not every enterprise is ready.
Fragmented monitoring approaches can make it all but impossible to connect the dots between complex, heterogeneous technical ecosystems, and the customer’s digital journey. The digital workspace can be a logical first step towards digital transformation but connecting the dots between ‘X-data’ (experience or XLA data) and ‘O-data’ (operational or SLA data) is not trivial.
In this webinar, John Worthington, Director of Customer Success at eG Innovations and an XLA Master, shows us:
-What role the Experience Level Agreement plays in the digital workspace
-The importance of unified, end-user-oriented views of digital workspace performance
-How converged APM/IPM can accelerate your customer experience journey

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

2. “A lot of things that we’re seeing in services is
how a company can go from just production
capability to a produce-on-demand and
produce on different capabilities with our
whole flexible manufacturing environment.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Douglas Bellin, Global Lead, Manufacturing
and Energy Industries at Cisco
3. “Now this could be a services model from a
manufacturer to an end-user, so maybe it is
what we’re seeing a lot in connected homes.
Where you are seeing a connected
refrigerator that actually talks back to the
manufacturer and starts giving them
information about the health of that
refrigerator.”
- Douglas Bellin, Global Lead, Manufacturing
and Energy Industries at Cisco
#ConnectedFutures
4. “There is more and more complexity on the plant
floor. That complexity has tremendous opportunity
to better understand what's occurring, how to drive
production, and how to optimize what's coming in
and going out of a plant.
What that presents for both the end-users as well as
machine builders is ‘how do I get moving on this
journey.’”
#ConnectedFutures
- Scott Lapcewich, VP GM Customer Support &
Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
5. “Once customers are connected they can
produce and deliver intelligent data, it’s
[about] helping them leverage it, helping us
understand what all the data means, and how
we can really optimize the output of our
assets.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Scott Lapcewich, VP GM Customer Support &
Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
6. “We developed a whole set of services where we’ll
go into a given site, and we’ll do an upfront
assessment of everything they own and the current
level of connectivity they have on the plant floor.
Then develop a master plan … so they can begin to
think about getting those benefits of digital
manufacturing.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Scott Lapcewich, VP GM Customer Support &
Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
7. “You’ve got to assess what you have. Then
understand what your goals are as a
business, and obviously how your
manufacturing operations fit into that
strategic plan.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Scott Lapcewich, VP GM Customer Support &
Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
8. “What we’re talking about first is unlocking
the data that exists so we can actually start
reacting to what's going on.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Douglas Bellin, Global Lead, Manufacturing
and Energy Industries at Cisco
9. “There's a huge, huge amount of data from those
sensors.
Again, it’s that plan that you're talking about, but
now that plan is ‘where did the data come from, what
we do with it, and how do we do it,’ what are you
looking at from, you know, helping the customers
understand that data.”
#ConnectedFutures
- Douglas Bellin, Global Lead, Manufacturing
and Energy Industries at Cisco
10. “If manufacturers are going to invest in
infrastructure and modernization in order to
get more data, then again there’s a question,
‘what do we do with it to optimize
performance.’”
#ConnectedFutures
- Scott Lapcewich, VP GM Customer Support &
Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
11. “… so that requires turning data into
information, creating higher value analytics,
and increasing domain knowledge of a
particular manufacturing process. Those are
the types of services we’re beginning to
deliver more and more of, and these analytics
become available from our customers’
plants.”

Maintenance for Rockwell Automation
