I am Michele Lyles, a Digital Learning Specialist with Fort Bend ISD. I’m in my 11th year with Fort Bend, but I have been an educator for 25 years. I have 9 years experience in the field of technology integration and I also have contributed curriculum resources to the district in the areas of Internet Safety and Technology Applications TEKS integrated lessons.
In this course, you will explore collaborative projects, academic challenges, and other educational activities implemented across out district via distance using the videoconference units we have on each campus in FBISD. This session will provide a wealth of resources for utilizing videoconferencing to enhance your instruction, no matter what grade you teach.
Distance learning by definition is the use of technology to overcome time, distance and other barriers to address the needs of educators and individual learners.
Videoconferencing is a type of distance learning in which two or more people in different geographic locations can engage in a live, audio and visual experience in order to exchange thoughts, ideas, and information just like they would if they were in a real face-to-face meeting only they are at their own respective locations.
Distance Learning equipment is provided on all FBISD campuses. We recently purchased a videoconferencing bridge which allows up to 19 virtual connections simultaneously.
How do you find out about Distance Learning events being offered? Please check your email from campus Librarians, Tuesday Tech News, the Fort Bend ISD website, follow our Twitter account, and keep in touch with your campus’s Digital Learning Specialist.
Here are just a few ways that you can incorporate distance learning into your classroom. You don’t have to wait for an event to be advertised! You can make your own event or collaboration between classrooms. Just be sure to complete the Distance Learning form on the Distance Learning page of the FBISD web site.
Let’s talk about some of the distance learning opportunities offered right here in our district. We offer collaborative projects as well as academic challenges.
A collaborative project gives you and your students an opportunity to learn and interact with another school or classroom.
Collaborations are a great way to start videoconferencing in your district. Connections to other campuses in FBISD and outside the district are free of charge. You only need to sign up.
Now we will discuss academic challenges. These activities provide a great way to involve students who normally might be hesitant to participate. The following challenges have been implemented district wide:
Here are some of our favorite providers.
So, how do you get starting locating videoconferences that you might want to use with your students?
(go over bullets on slide)
After you have found an event or if you have a collaborative project idea, select the distance learning link and complete the form. If there is any information you do not know, enter a question mark in the field and submit. (Explain the difference between a collaborative meeting and content provider registration.)
