CONDITIONAL SENTENCE
MEANING
 Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses.
They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can
only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.
 Conditional sentence merupakan kalimat majemuk yang berisikan kondisi
mengenai sebuah pengandaian, imajinasi, atau suatu kejadian yang belum
terjadi.
 Kalimat pengandaian ini diawali dengan ‘if’ sebagai penanda bahwa
kondisinya memang belum terjadi.
 Sedangkan main clause, biasanya berisi konsekuensi atau akibat dari kondisi
pengandaian sebelumnya.
EXAMPLE
 If we burn paper, it becomes ash.
 I will cook dinner tonight if you clean the
house.
 If I had time, I would go with you.
 If I had locked the car, the thief wouldn’t
have stolen my car.
PATTERN TYPE 0
(Verbal/with Verb)
 Meaning : Tipe kalimat ini digunakan ketika hasil atau konsekuensi dari
kondisi terwujud alias memaparkan sebuah kebeneran (general truth)
dan fakta ilmiah.
 if + Simple Present (S + V1), Future Tense (S+ Will
+ V1)
Example :
 I feel sick if I eat too much.
PATTERN TYPE 1
(Verbal/with Verb)
 Bentuk kalimat pengandaian yang digunakan ketika hasil atau
konsekuensi memiliki kemungkinan untuk terjadi di masa depan.
 if + Simple Present (S + V1), Future Tense (S+ Will
+ V1)
Example :
If I meet him, I will introduce myself.
V1 will + V1

(NonVerbal/without Verb)
 if + Simple Present (S + To Be (is, am, are), Future
Tense (S + Will + Be)
Example : If she _____ (smart), she _____ (be) popular.
If she is smart, she will be popular.
PATTERN TYPE 2
(Verbal/with Verb)
 Tipe kalimat pengandaian yang digunakan ketika hasil atau konsekuensi
hanya memiliki harapan terwujud walaupun kemungkinannya sangat
kecil.
 if + Simple Past (S + V2), Future Past Tense (S+
Would + V1)
Example : If I ____ (meet) him, I _____ (introduce) myself.
If I met him, I would introduce myself.
V2 would + V1
PATTERN TYPE 2
(NonVerbal/without Verb)
 if + Simple Past (S + To Be (were), Future Tense (S
+ Would + Be)
Example : If she _____ (smart), she _____ (be) popular.
If she were smart, she would be popular.
NOTE : For all subjects use WERE.
PATTERN TYPE 3
(Verbal/With Verb)
 Bentuk kalimat pengandaian ketika sebuah kondisi tidak mungkin terwujud sama
sekali. Hal ini bisa digambarkan karena kondisi yang sangat mustahil atau hanya
sebuah mimpi atau imajinasi.
 if + Simple Past Perfect (S + Had + V3), Future Past
Perfect Tense (S+ Would + Have + V3)
Example : If I ____ (meet) him, I _____ (introduce) myself.
If I had met him, I would have introduced myself.
had + V3 would + have + V3
PATTERN TYPE 3
(NonVerbal/Without Verb)
 if + Simple Past Perfect (S + Had + Been), Future
Past Perfect Tense (S+ Would + Have + Been)
Example : If she _____ (smart), she _____ (be) popular.
If she had been smart, she would have been popular.
