The Preacher And The Thinkers Summary
The Preacher and The Thinkers
Having the drive, the discipline, the work ethic, and the mindset to accomplish what needs to get
done. Even when the world feels like it s pounding on you, to never give up is to be
successful. This is what needs to get done in order for one to feel and know that they have
succeeded. It begins with the feeling of self satisfaction in knowing that you could do something.
Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self satisfaction in knowing you did your best
to become the best you are capable of becoming, the first picture spoke about what John Wooden

The day he was there they were learning how to draw a three dimensional cube, there was one kid
who was struggling more than the others the teacher sent him to do it on the board. Then
continuously asked the class after every attempt of his if the three dimensional cube was drawn
correctly time and time again the class said it was wrong until he finally got it right. Mr. Stigler
found it interesting that he was the one placed on the board because over here in American class
rooms they often sent the student who did it the best to the board. This small experience that first
got him thinking about how differently East and West approach the experience of intellectual
struggle. This shed new light showing that struggle isn t always a bad thing, it doesn t always
mean you re not smart enough to do something, it could simply mean that you need to take more
time to understand and assist over and over again until there is an understanding of it, which is
why this article was chosen it shows a variety how success is approached on either side of the

Graham Greene s The Quiet American
The United States must make hard decisions as conflict arises between the United States and the
Soviet Union. After World War II, the US began to have conflicting views with the Soviet Union
which caused a series of proxy wars, one of them occurring in Vietnam. The Soviet Union was
trying to make Vietnam one of their satellite nations, a nation that is aligned and under the
influence of the Soviet Union, while the US wanted to stop the Soviet Union s influence on other
nations. There were differing view on whether or not the US should intervene in vietnam. An
illustration of these differing views is seen in Graham Greene s novel The Quiet American where
Thomas Fowler, a british journalist, believes in remaining uninvolved in vietnam, while... Show

After seeing the results of the General ThГ© s bombs Pyle believed that the vietnamese were
only war casualties... It was a pity, but you can t always hit your target. Anyway they died in the
right cause... they died for democracy (Greene 171). Pyle s carefree tone shows how he was fine
with the deaths of many innocent Vietnamese people as long as his own selfish goal of stopping
communism was achieved. Pyle did not care about the Vietnamese people because he pushed
them aside and said that he was doing to for democracy. In the Nation Magazine s Puppets and
Patriots, they criticized the US on how it was put into a position which has become almost
habitual, the position of giving support moral, diplomatic, financial to a regime whose only
virtue is its anti communism (Puppets). Nation Magazine s purpose in writing this was to expose
the US selfish motives and is shown by their critical tone. This is significant because it shows that
the US would support poor leaders, including Diem, who had little support from the vietnamese.
This proves how Fowlers perspective was more justified because Pyle did not care about the well
being of the Vietnamese and chose to support General ThГ© even after seeing the damage that he
has caused in vietnam, so that he could satisfy his own selfish needs. The US did not truly

1. Define American Call/Put option10 pts
Answer
Options allow investors to hedge against risk. If one expects stock prices to rise, then he/she may
like to invest in stocks. However, buying stocks also entails risk because of price fluctuation. The
risk will be potentially large in case price falls to zero. In order to avoid risk one may like to buy a
call option.
An American call option gives one the right, but not an obligation, to buy a specified number of
shares of a stock for a specified price called exercise or strike price before the maturity date or on ...

effects are known to exist, * the weekend effect seems to have all but disappeared, * intramonth

in some countries. * Halloween Indiactor: a trading strategy of tactical asset allocation based on
the old saying * sell in May and go away generated abnormal returns in comparison with stock

followed by large negative returns on financial market indices (roughly 200 to 500 per cent in
comparison to weekend effect), and researchers argue that the effect could be because of changes in
sleep patterns.

Agriculture In China Since The Late 19th Century
Since the agricultural revolution, ninety nine percent of humanity had worked the fields of
agriculture in order to survive. Almost nobody had been able to move away from the fields to
cities, and people in the cities had almost never wanted to stop being a craftsman to begin a new
life as a farmer. Although the latter point remains true to this day, the former has been dramatically
altered. With innovations in agriculture as simple as hardened iron plows and better irrigation,
slightly more people could make their homes in cities. With the innovation of steam power and the
reaper in the late 18th and early 19th century, many more people had to leave farming as farm
production increased to join in the steam powered industry in the cites. With... Show more content

This created a great migration from farms to cities where farmers learned a low skill, low wage
trade in a highly productive factory, out producing high skilled artisans of the same vein. Supply
of goods skyrocketed high above the pre industrial era, driving prices way down. With such high
production in so many niches of the market, people could actually purchase nonessentials despite
earning less money from working in a factory; money was actually worth more. Because living in
a city had become cheaper, more farmers were attracted to come to work in a city further
increasing this migration. This migration is still happening today in China. Chinese are moving
from agricultural to urban areas for the same reasons americans and europeans have been doing
since the 17th century. What these factories to create, however, is a large increase in income and
wealth inequality; however, this barely matters because relatively everyone is better off. The rich
did not steal their money from anyone, and the poor are not having their money taken away. The
resource pie has been getting bigger; although some peoples pieces have been getting bigger faster,
it does not change the fact that everyone is better

The Impact Of Technology On Society Today
There is no doubt that technology plays a big role in society today. Whether people like it or not,
one thing is definite: technology is not going anywhere. Having grown up in the midst of the
digital revolution, technology was going to be a part of my life, and it most definitely has. No
matter if it is the Internet, computers, cell phones, tablets, video games; I have been exposed to all
of them. However, of all the pieces of technologyI have used, the one I cannot live without would
have to be my laptop. This year has opened my eyes to how important it is to have a nice laptop.
Whether I am taking notes in class, doing research online, typing a paper, surfing the web, or
Skyping my family back home, I am always using my laptop. Sure, I still use my cell phone a
lot, but I honestly do not use social media on it as I used to. So really the main purposes for my
cell phone are what they should be for; making phone calls and sending texts. If I did not have a
laptop, it would make going to school more challenging, I would spend much more time at the
library using their computers and could not enjoy lying in bed watching my favorite show on
Netflix. Of course I could handle not having a laptop. However, after completing my first year
away at school, my eyes have been opened to the importance of having one, and I have seen how
dependent I am on mine. I use the technology I use because it makes my life easier, simpler, and
more efficient. I also use technology because it

What is it and how do I get it? .
Before Jesus left, He said to his disciples, You tarry in Jerusalem until you are endued with power
from on high. And He said, You will receive power after that when the Holy Spiritcomes upon you.
And then you will be my witnesses, in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and to the utter most parts

The first thing is power. Now, there are two kinds of power. Jesussaid, I have all power in heaven

Now it s me in relation to water, but the difference is incredible in terms of the dimension between

Now the Holy Spirit takes you and puts you into Jesus when you come to Him. Nobody can come

Catcalling And Social Media
Street harassment, also know as catcalling, is an action that I hate the most. Street harassment is
unwanted sayings or gestures that are targeted toward someone in specific based on sexual
orientation or gender, and in this case, women. Catcalling can be verbal such as compliments, like,
hey, baby. Catcalling can be physical, like groping a part of the body, and it can also be sexual
remarks. When I see street harassmenton social media, like in a picture or a video, I feel
uncomfortable, so I can t even imagine how some women feel when they have inappropriate
comments thrown at them constantly.
I think catcalling is the dumbest thing that anyone could have possibly thought of. Women don t
deserve to get harassed on the street. We want to get from point A to point B without any
interruptions, unless it s with our consent and if it s a friend whom consent was given to. If I
have to get stopped on the street for a gross man to comment on my butt or follow me, it is not
going to be a very good day. Most women I know, do not enjoy the act of being catcalled,
however, research from ILR ( Street Harassment Statistics ) and Hollaback!, a non profit
organization, showed that only 3%, out of 4,900 participants in the survey under the age of 40, has
found street harassment flattering. Some people do like it, and I m not going to shame, but I d
much rather have people that know me and are my friends compliment me in a nice way rather than
strangers comment on my body because they

The Realism Of Realism And Film
The aesthetics of realism in each film can be utilized in many diverse ways to offer certain truths
about the world of the film to further express the film s story. These theatrical elements emphasize
what the film attempts to relay to the audience; moreover, it intensifies the authenticity of each
aspect of the film. The use of real people, on camera interviews, textual information, and of direct
address to the camera displays the realism of each film.
Textual information is shown in This is Spinal Tap and Shut up and Sing in various parts of the
movies and for different reasons. The first time textual information is presented in Spinal Tap is at
the beginning of the film. As the band plays at the concert, the camera moves to each band ... Show

On camera interviews in both the films accentuate the films realism. In Shut up and Sing there is
an interview in the beginning of the movie which took place after Natalie voiced her impolite
comment about President Bush. This shows the audience that Natalie is in fact sorry she said what
she had said but not sorry she had spoken up. Martie furthers her point by saying that their band
would not be as eminent as they are now if Natalie restrained her outspoken attitude. Another
example is when the Dixie Chicks are interviewed after the release of their new song Not Ready
to Make Nice. The interviewer says that public opinion has changed much in the past three years
and that Bush s ratings have gone down. Natalie replies that they were compelled to write their
newest album. This shows the audience the band s determination to stick with their opinions and
that Bush s support has decreased while the band s support has endured. In Spinal Tap, there are
several instances in where the band is interviewed. It is relayed to the audience that several
drummers that were once apart of Spinal Tap have all died under mysterious circumstances. This
element, on camera interviews, is used to disclose some background of the band. Another
example is when the lead singer of the band is interviewed after Nigel quits the band. David says
that he will move on because Nigel leaving is no different than all the other people that have left
the band. He also says

The Crusades And The Cuban Missile Crisis
For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We
all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children s future. And we are all mortal ( Nuclear Test
Ban Treaty ). These words were said by John F. Kennedy in June 1963, when there were signs of
lessening tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, and signed the Limited
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which forbid nuclear weapon tests or other nuclear explosions under
water, in the atmosphere, or in irradiated outer space. It allowed underground nuclear tests as long

It began when the United States discovered that there were missiles in their neighboring country
Cuba. The missiles stationed in Cuba, belonged to the Soviet Union. Also, the United States placed
their missiles in the Soviet neighboring country of Turkey and in the southern part of the nearby
country of Italy. Kennedy and his advisers were planning to launch missiles into Soviet territory,
but at the last second, he called off his top advisers and canceled the nuclear attack on the Soviet
Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis is like the Crusades in early first millennia. Cuba would represent
Jerusalem, the parenthetical focus of the Crusades. The U.S. would represent the Christians, who
won the Crusades because the United States would eventually win the Cold War. The U.S.S.R.
would represent the Muslims, who lost the the Crusades because the Soviets lost the war in the
end. The Cuban Missile Crisis can be similar to the Crusades because both events started almost
the same way. The Crusades started when Muslims wanted to conquer land near Jerusalem, the
holy city that belong to the Christians, just like the Soviets and Cuba. The Christians were afraid
that the Muslims would take over the city of Jerusalem, just like the U.S. thought that the Soviets
were going to launch missiles into the United States. November 25, 2016, Fidel Castro, former
President and Communist Leader of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, died. No one is sure if
the force of the revolution and the crisis will dissipate without Mr. Castro and, eventually, his
brother. But Fidel Castro s impact on Latin America and the Western Hemisphere has the earmarks
of lasting indefinitely (DePalma). The capacity of his identity remains inevitable, for better or

Worlds Beyond The Solar System
When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of
our Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to
think all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way
revolve around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in
space. Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar
System, but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving
through space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets,
stated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must:
orbit a star, have enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must
be gravitationally dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence
besides the planet s own satellites.
Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one
star holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then
multiply this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we
are dealing with. The first discovery of a planet outside the

The Socio Economic Attainment Of Adoptees
During the second half of the 20th century, there has been unprecedented growth in adoptions
(Selman, 2009; Stolley, 1993). Not only has the number of adoptees more than doubled from
approximately 50,000 in the 1940 s to more than 110,000 in 1990 (Stolley, 1993), but this increase
has been the inspiration of significant studies related to the psychological, social and physical
health of the adopted population. Furthermore, in the past four decades, the U.S. has become the
number one destination of adopted children from foreign countries.
While there have been significant studies to provide a portrait relating to how adoptees adapt to
their families, (L. Hamilton, Cheng, Powell, 2007; Hellerstedt 2008), there remains major

Thomas examines the relationship between adoption status and schooling progress differs between
foreign born and U.S. born children. He also examines if foreign born adopted children are more
likely to lag behind in school compared to U.S. born adoptees. Lastly, he examines if adoption
status results in differentiated patterns of educational inclusion among immigrant children. In
addition, he also examines how these variations are associated to racial and ethnic differences.
Thomas tests four hypothesis. Hypothesis 1 proposes adopted children have a schooling
disadvantage compared to biological peers but the disadvantage is smaller among immigrants
compared to U.S. natives. Hypothesis 2 tests whether adopted children of immigrant parents are
more likely to fall behind in school compared to their peers with U.S. born parents. Hypothesis 3
suggests foreign born adoptees have less favorable schooling outcomes compared to adoptees born
in the United States. Hypothesis 4 proposes minorities, especially Black face additional barriers of
prejudice and discrimination and because of this realize the least educational gains when compared
to white peers.
Thomas avoids two common shortcomings of studies oabout adopted children. Many are based on
convenience samples and small numbers of observations (Brodzinsky, 1993; Shiano Tuan, 2008).

Interpersonal Communication And The Self
Throughout this semester in communications I have learned a lot about myself, how to deal with
others, relationships, and more. There were some lessons that stood out to me the most, and
that I thought about after class. The first was in chapter 3 about interpersonal communication
and the self. During this chapter, we took a piece of paper and put four people that we knew
down. We chose someone who we were just getting to know, and then others that we knew very
well or that were very close to us. In this lesson, we were discussing the social penetration theory.
The first step is the breadth which is a volunteered amount of information that we tell someone
as subjects are being discussed. The second step is depth which is when we began to go deeper
into personal information. The four people that I chose were a girl I had just met at work, my
sister, my dad, and my boyfriend. After completing the circles and filling in the amount of
information that I have covered with them, the girl I work with had the least, and my sister had
the most filled in to the core. After completing this lesson, I looked at my paper and realized that
almost everyone was more filled in to the core than my relationship with my father. This lesson
struck a major cord with me because I never realized how surface level my relationship with my
dad was until talking about this lesson. I knew that my father and I were not that close to begin
with, but I never knew why. After this lesson, I understood that my

Ontological Argument For The Existence Of God
Throughout Proslogion Anselm defends his argument that God is which nothing greater can be
thought by providing key elements. Anselm proposes that one cannot imagine a god that is greater,
and even non believers have a conception of the western god. Anselm asserts that since everyone
has an understanding of god in their mind, then god exist in reality. This paper will evaluate some
of the main key elements that Anselm uses to prove that the ontological argumentis correct in
Proslogion. I contend that Anselm does not exhibit proper terminology and provides vague
statements and therefore his argument that God is which nothing greater can be thought is invalid.

Anselm argues that god is merciful and impassible at the same time. Those two definitions are the
complete opposite of each other. Merciful can mean showing compassion for a person and being
sympathetic towards a person who has done wrong. Impassible can mean incapable of feeling
sympathy for an individual who has done wrong. Anselm believes that god is both, but how is that
possible for a person to be compassionate and not compassionate. This statement is contradictory
and does not make logical sense because a person cannot be compassionate and not compassionate.
If god is both compassionate and non compassionate then he is indecisive because he cannot decide
whether he actually wants to punish an individual. When Anselm stated that god was both
compassionate and not compassionate he realized that it did not make sense because he even
questions god. Anselm combines words that are contradictory to each other and creates a confusing
statement. This statement is difficult to understand and creates a flaw in his ontological

Risk of understanding the market A successful approach to market orientation involves a systematic
approach to researching consumer behaviour. Missing the mark in this process creates a system
whereby the company uses ineffective data in its approach to reaching out to customers. Working

small, lack research resources or has high segmentation between its departments is at a disadvantage
when it comes to establishing marketing orientation.

social gathering and interconnectedness amongst people from different backgrounds. Due to this,
and the enjoyment this sport gives me, I have played competitive soccer my whole life.
I worked tirelessly over many years and eventually, my hard work was acknowledged when I was
scouted to be a trialist for the new professional soccer team, FC Edmonton. I knew this was my
chance to finally make not only myself happy, but my parents proud. They sacrificed their hard
earned money, down time, and personal hobbies for my soccer endeavours.
Unfortunately, during this time, I began to develop multiple injuries (AMCAS Primary
Application) that severely impacted my performance. I attempted to play through the pain but my
performance suffered. Eventually, I was dropped by FC Edmonton. I was devastated and I felt
guilty for letting my support system and family members down. ... Show more content on

Even though I was upset and confused about my future for multiple weeks, I began to reflect on
my strengths. After multiple sessions of deep reflection, I discovered my deep passion for
helping others going through similar tough situations. Through my personal experiences with
physicians and my interest/success in medical science, I decided that obtaining a medical
education will allow me to positively affect a large number of people. This was the most difficult
personal decision I have had to make because choosing to pursue either route was risky. If I
attempted to play professional soccer and failed, I would have pushed back my schooling. Also, I
was aware of the competitive nature of medical school acceptance and the long route to actually

Intellectual Developments Pertaining to Gender in Japan...
Intellectual developments pertaining to gender in Japan and Europe
Gender roles and the rights of women in society are fundamentally the same in 18th century
Europe as in Japan at the turn of the century. In both societies women are looked down upon as
the weaker counterparts of men; useful only for improving the lives of men. Because society
believes women only live to improve the lives of men they feel that women don t need to be
educated, they don t need to own property, and that women should suit the taste and needs of
men. The idea that women are lesser than men in society and don t deserve the same privileges
and rights shaped the role of women in Europe and Japan. Women in Japan and Europe are forced
to rely on men because they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rousseau describes the natural society as a bond between a father and child where children
remain attached to the father for preservation and the father takes care of them because he loves
them. When the children no longer need the father for preservation the bond is broken and they
stay together only voluntarily. Just like the children in Rousseau s first society women in the time
period and society married for security. In return for the security men offered women were
expected to be good, obedient wives. When women are allowed to be independent and no longer
need men for security they only marry voluntarily.
Yoshiko, a character from Sanshiro, is a perfect example of the natural society Rousseau describes
with a woman in the place of the child. Yoshiko has the security of her brother s money and home
and therefore does not have to marry to gain security. Yoshiko will only marry if she finds a man
she loves. Most women are not lucky enough to be as financially stable as Yoshiko and are
controlled by their inability to be independent. Like Yoshiko Mineko, another character from
Sanshiro, is a wealthy woman who lives with her brother. She is financially independent but
Sanshiro is afraid to borrow money from her because she is a girl, not an independent person
(SЕЌseki 146). Even though Mineko has her own money she does not have the right to use it as
she wants.

High Cost Of Entry And Market Domination Limits Entrants...
Barriers to Entry High cost of entry and market domination limits entrants into the industry. The
upfront cost for new airlines is capital intensive. In addition, it s difficult for new airlines to
obtain airport slots for takeoff and landing which are determined by the airports. Established
airlines already hold the monopoly over slots at certain airports, making it harder for new airlines
to infiltrate (Airlines Industry Profile, 2014). The industry is also dominated by five key airlines;
American, United, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue which make it difficult for new airlines to gain
market share. At 40 of the 100 largest U.S. airports, a single airlinecontrols a majority of the
market. At 93 of the top 100, one or two airlines control a majority of the seats (Koenig
Mayerowitz, 2015). In addition, with fuel being the number one cost for airlines, the volatile fuel
prices make it hard for new airlines to make a profit. Domestic airlines in the U.S. spend a
combined $2 to $5 billion on jet fuel every month. As a stat up airlines, the price paid for fuel is the
same weather planes are full or empty which could stop new airlines from entering the industry.
Lastly, the FAA has strict regulations which discourage new airlines from entering the industry. All
new entrants must abide by Federal Aviation Authority regulations on airworthiness, pilot
competence, and related issues (Airline Industry Profile, 2014). Overall, entry into the airline
industry is high and there is

Argumentative Essay On Drinking Milk
You always hear your mom or dad say, Drink your milk, so you can get stronger! but is milk
really making you strong, or is it actually hurting you? Scientists say, Dairy consumption can
play a role in asthma, Parkinson s disease, and highly elevated blood pressure. Dairy is highly
inflammatory, causing issues like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, and acne. When you
drink milk, you are actually consuming far more than just milk. American dairy farmers have
long been injecting cows with a genetically engineered bovine growth hormone called rBGH to
increase milk production(MindBodyGreen), So what are you really putting in your body that
according to your parents makes you Big and Strong ? In this paper, I tell you the truth about the
three most common dairy products that just might leave you speechless. Dairy consumption can
lead to fatal diseases. The average amount of serving you pay per gallon is 25 cents. Why are
you paying that if it s so unhealthy? Over the years, scientist and nutritionist have created lactose
free, dairy free, and soy free milk. A popular brand that we often consume is Silk. It s free of all
of soy, lactose, and dairy. Milk isn t unhealthy, in fact milk is very healthy, but the dairy in the

Literary Analysis Essay Persepolis
Everyone has their own opinions and ideas of right and wrong. This can and, most often, will
cause conflict as people from opposing sides disagree. Persepolis, a graphic novel by Marjane
Satrapi, tells of her troubling tween years, where she lived through the Iranian Revolution. During
this time, fun was banned, boys were constantly being sent to their deaths, and danger of being
caught was always afoot. This leads to Marji s parents sending her away to live with a friend in
Austria. In this book, Satrapi describes the Iranian Revolutionthrough her childhood point of view
in order to illustrate that people will push for change in times of conflict, but since there is rarely
distinct right and wrong sides, change can worsen the problem. There are many examples of this
throughout the book. One example is on page 39, where Marji, the young Satrapi, and the maid,
Mehri, get slapped by Marji s mother, for going to a demonstration even though they were told not
to. Marji and Mehri thought they were doing the right thing by demonstrating for something they
believed in, but Marji s mother felt the opposite way. Though the two girls intentions were good,
they could have been killed, as the day they decided to protest on was known as... Show more

a bad thing to do, but in this case it could be considered an acceptable thing to do because of the
situation. Surely the school could have understood that Marji was in mourning for her dead friend
and could have made an exception. Instead, she was pushed to hitting her teacher which got her

Phaedrus
Like how the caterpillar transforms into the beautiful butterfly, or how the chameleon changes its
colour according to its surroundings, the world is a place full of a variety of people who may not
act according to his/her own outward demeanor. The obvious events of appearance versus reality
which occur in everyday living is also a prevalent theme throughout literature and media; William
Shakespeare s Hamlet is no exception. In fact, this theme provides the characters of Hamlet with a

To quench his desire for information, Polonius uses manipulation and dishonesty, while hiding
behind his best appearance. In the beginning scenes of the play, Polonius is supporting his son,
Laertes, in his departure to France; during their goodbyes, Polonius gives Laertes shallow advice
on how he should behave. With these actions, Polonius is displaying his paternal role
excellently, he is looking out for his son such as any good father would. What Laertes, along
with other onlookers cannot realize is Polonius will send his servant, Reynaldo, to obtain all the
information on Laertes activities in France. Polonius desire for knowledge leads him to allow,
even encourage Reynaldo to say, And in part him, but, you may say, not well . But, if t be he I
mean, he s very wild. Addicted so and so. And there put on him What forgeries you please.
(II.I.17 20). Due to Polonius earlier displays of affection towards his son, he is able to use
dishonest methods of spying and spreading false information (can taint Laertes social life) to get
what he considers to be the truth. Not only did Polonius mess with Laertes life, but he also decides
to take control of his daughter s romantic relationship with prince Hamlet. He urges Ophelia to
talk about her meetings with Hamlet and proceeds to forbid her from seeing him, on the premise
that his affections are untrue. Although Polonius approach was not courteous, he is once again
establishing a paternal figure who is only looking out for his daughter s well being. As soon as
Polonius hears about Hamlet s mad actions towards Ophelia, he wishes to prove Hamlet s
madness is due to heartbreak. This prompts him to use Ophelia as bait, suggesting to the king I ll
loose my daughter to him: Be you and I behind an arras then; Mark the encounter (II.II.160 162).

Society’s Expectations of a Female’s Body Image Essays
Society s Expectations of a Female s Body Image
Society plays many roles in peoples lives. The biggest role that society plays with females is how
they should appear. All over the television, movies, and different magazine covers, females come
into view as looking very thin and beautiful. People that see these famous females begin to idealize
that body image. The male gender also visualizes these famous females and thinks that all females
should have this slender appearance. As the year 2000 rolled in, actresses and models body weight
decreased, and their waiflike bodies became more noticeable in the public s eyes. Many little girls

Society and Eating Disorders by Colleen Thompson and Eating Disorders by Katherine Fox both
discuss the issue of eating disorders due to the way society and the media put the ideal image into
a female s mind. Both of these articles mainly use the social appeal to make their readers aware of
this issue. The last two articles, Perfection The Barbie Body?! written by Julie Hong and
Expectations of a Fashion Model authored by Popular Culture, discuss the female s body as an
object. These two articles also use social appeal to help the reader better understand how females
grow up idealizing an unrealistic body. All six of these articles were all very informative and well
written, even though they all used different techniques to get their point across. All of the authors
used pathos as their main appeal, but they used it in different forms.
The most important rhetorical technique is ethos, which only two of the different articles used.
The reason ethos is so important is because it tells the reader whether or not the author s
information is reliable. Do You Have a Body Image Problem?! is the most reliable article because
the author is a doctor. This article is written about body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a disease that
two percent of the United States population has. A person being overly concerned about their
appearance within society brings on this disease. Dr. Phillips

The Count Of Nevilles Analysis
This walk explores the beautiful countryside to the north east of Sheriff Hutton, visiting the
hamlet of High Stittenham and the secluded valley of Mowthorpe Dale. The extensive views
stretch across the Vale of York. The name Sheriff Hutton derives from the Old English words
hoh and tun which, when combined mean farm on the spur of land . The prefix of Sheriff
originates from its association with Bertram de Bulmer, the Sheriff of York in 1115, who once
held title to the estate. Later the Bulmers married into the powerful Neville family. The Nevilles
became lords of the manor in 1331 after the Bulmers male lineage failed. In 1382 John, Lord

The Geisha
Geisha The geisha has been the subject of innumerable books and films focusing on the myth of
the profession and the culture in which she represented. Various portrayals of the geisha have
focused on different aspects of their lifestyle and the different versions also have varying
degrees of accuracy in their depictions. In three different films and one book, four different
groups try to explain exactly what it was like for people who lived as geishas or alongside these
women. Some versions of the story portray the geisha life as a very pleasant one where the role
of geisha was an honored title. Others, like Memoirs of a Geisha paint this existence in a more
unpleasant life, equating geisha with high class prostitution. Some tell the fantasy version of
geisha hood through a modern and decidedly western sensibility and use the profession as a form
of othering the Japanese people, while the others tell a far more realistic and eastern perspective
of the same topic. The films to be discussed are: Madame Butterfly, the Barbarian and the Geisha,
and Memoirs of a Geisha. The book is an autobiography of a real life geisha, written by Sayo
Matsuda. In one of the first films to portray a geisha, Madame Butterfly tells the story of a young
geisha who falls in love with an American who marries her and impregnates her, only to abandon
her to marry a proper, white wife. This marriage, unlike the one to the geisha Cho Cho San is the

In all of my past successful collaborations, each member had a mutual respect for each other,
enjoyed each other presence, and worked together in an appropriate manner. To contrast this: in a
previous group that performed not successfully, it was due to internal conflict between my partner

idea they would suggest, even if it was good. Although we managed to put aside our differences to
finish the project, not many positive memories remained from that collaboration other than the
negativity and awkwardness between us. I understand how tension in a group could harm the
collaboration as it may lead to the rejection of positive ideas or worse case scenario, sabotaging
the project. Working in an atmosphere of stress definitely does not promote insightful and efficient

collaborating in general. I plan to enforce these ingredients in future group projects as it ll allow

There Will Come Soft Rain Technology Essay
In today s growing society, technology has brought many reforms to the way we operate on a
daily basis. Most tend to consider the positive effects of technology, and how much it has benefited
us both socially and in the workplace. However, there is a form of duality that comes with these
developments; Despite the seemingly positive outcomes associated with the benefits of technology,
there is also a lack of responsibilityon our part that results. Hence, over time it has been
increasingly difficult to draw the line between what is reasonable and what it simply too much

One of the many magnificent features of the house is the automated kitchen. This kitchen pampered
the family by preparing each meal, washing the dishes, and serving them all at the dinner table,
all responsibilities you would expect of a typical household. Early in the text, Bradbury
comprehensively describes the kitchen s seemingly perfect nature, In the kitchen the breakfast
stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned
toast, eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cold glasses of milk
(There Will Come Soft Rains 1). The precision and accuracy of the breakfast prepared was
impeccable: the milk cold, eggs and toast prepared to perfection, and exactly sixteen slices of
bacon to feed a family. With such an ideal, why would anyone need or want to cook breakfast,
when their effort could easily be replaced? Instead of relying on themselves, one would instead
choose to rely on this automated kitchen. The more someone ceases to rely on themselves, the less
responsible they ultimately become. Therefore, Bradbury s brief, yet powerful, use of imagery
supports the idea that it in such a technologically advanced environment, taking on basic

Excellence In The Works Of Martin Luther King Jr.
Excellence is a self imposed standard of conduct. In addition, excellence also, ...means replacing
bumbling with efficiency, carelessness with skill, embarrassment with pride (Johnston page
24). This is what we mean by the word excellence. Excellence is difficult to define because, ... we
all certainly recognize it when we observe it in others. And we are refreshed and reassured when
we witness it (Johnston page 25). This word can also be defined as, a certain style of life, a
manner of living, a bigness of spirit, a point of view, a frame of reference, a set of priorities, a
hierarchy of values, an admirable self imposed standard (Johnston page 25). Johnston s statement
on Martin Luther King Jr. was very inspiring. It just goes to show us that we only have to believe

There is usually some overlap. People who focus on one frequently attain a measure of the other.
At this point it might be helpful to examine both success and excellence (Johnston page 29, 30).
For purposes of discussion, let us establish the term success as attaining cultural goals that are sure
to elevate one s perceived importance within that culture (Johnston page30). Success is so sought
after because, our comprehension of excellence is enhanced by contrasting it with something we
constantly hear about: success. Also, I am not implying that one is invariably good and the other
is always undesirable. It is evident that success pales in the brilliance of excellence. The latter, in
comparison with the former, is an essential ingredient in the character of any nation (Johnston page
37). Therefore, in our world, excellence must not be perceived as optional. It is a necessity

Violence And Death In Romeo And Juliet
Is Romeo and Juliet a Shakesperian play full of love at first sight or just rash and consequential
decisions? In this play we meet two star crossed lovers who meet at a party on one night and
then, almost instataneously, plegde themselves for each other and plan to marry, which then
leads to six people dying including themselves. Romeo and Juliet should have taken it slow with
their affairs in order to eliminate the violence and death that ensued from them falling in love,
encourage a healthier road to peace in order to unite both families, and to better encourage a
more joyful relationship, as mentioned by Friar Lurence. Juliet and Romeo s love at first sight
isn t as sweet as it first seems, as it leads into their own and three other character s,Tybalt, Paris,

First Aid Qualification Essay
All players and coaches should have a sports first aid qualification, it is an important subject to
cover in sport because it could potentially save someone s life in the future. A sports first aid
qualification is a one day or 8 hour course that is designed specifically for first aid workers in sport,
to be able to take this course you must be a minimum age of 14 years. I believe that all players and
coaches should have a sports first aidqualification because it is always good to learn about how to
take care of injuries. In a the 8 hours of the course they cover important topic that would be essential
to learn such as crisis management, management of hard and soft tissue injuries, fracture
management (RICER), Control of external bleeding and moving the injured athlete (stretcher
carries). The reason I have chosen this topic question is because it is a major issue in today s
society and children and athletes are getting hurt in games and training. When this happens the
coaches and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is shocking that most coaches and players even at a younger age don t have a sports aid
qualification which is leading to injuries on the field and they have no idea what to do or don t
even have a first aid kit. One occasion a junior grade soccer game a child hit his head on the goal
post knocking him unconscious and the coach didn t have a first aid kit and had no idea what he
was doing. This is why the US collage of sport recommends that all coaches should have a
minimum level of qualification in sports first aid for safety reasons. Another company that supports
this question is St Johns of Wales, this company have now began teaching every player, coach and
staff member about emergency first aid because they want everyone in the community that plays
sport to be able to have the skills so they can one day save a

Analysis Of Alexander Pope s Frankenstein
Throughout history, humans have been fascinated the inherent bond that exists between ourselves
and Nature. During the eighteenth century, known also as the Reformation period, there was a push
in European society towards science and reason being the epicenter of culture. During this time,
Alexander Pope wrote the poem Essay on Man which was intended to be an outline of perennial,
universal truths. The emphasis was primarily on the nature of reason rather than Nature itself. After
this time period came the Romantic period, lasting from 1785 1832. It was in 1818 that Mary
Shelley wrote Frankenstein, also known as The Modern Prometheus , an imaginative tale about a
monster created by man. The relationships between Nature and the characters are dynamic in that
they change frequently. They appear, in many instances, to be a vehicle for expressing emotion. By
examining and writing about the way humans interact with the Nature surrounding them, Pope and
Shelley made it possible to analyze and highlight common relationships between humans and
Nature during their lifetime; for Pope and his peers, it was more about reason and ___ (word for
only coming to conclusions based on ur five senses), while during Shelley s time period, people
tended to have a more emotional relationship with Nature.
Shelley utilized imagery, metaphor, simile, and personification relative to Nature, frequently paired
with tone, in many scenes throughout Frankenstein. Whether it be to uplift or depress

Sequence: I remember my first day of high school, the moment when I walked to the bus stop; I
noticed old friends from middle school. The bus came, I got on it and went to school. When we
arrived at school, I got off the bus and immediately noticed even more old friends; then we had
long conversations. So by then that made me very comfortable on my first day.
Precision: I can say with this particular pattern, I would apply this to my job experiences. When I
started my first day of work, I knew what I had to do once I got there, I know what I need to say
to the customers, as they come in the door. As well as if a customer calls with an issue and if a
customer walks in. I can say I m more than comfortable with situations like this.
Technical Reasoning: There was a time when I got into an argument with my daughter s father. This
particular argument made me feel very uncomfortable. The argument made it hard for me to get a
long with his mother and sisters. So for a long while I avoided them both, still to this day I m not
comfortable talking to either of them. I no longer communicate with my daughter s father. ... Show

Even when the world feels like it s pounding on you, to never give up is to be successful. This is what needs to get done in order for one to feel and know that they have succeeded. It begins with the feeling of self satisfaction in knowing that you could do something. Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming, the first picture spoke about what John Wooden said. Then continuously asked the class after every attempt of his if the three dimensional cube was drawn correctly time and time again the class said it was wrong until he finally got it right. Mr. Stigler found it interesting that he was the one placed on the board because over here in American class rooms they often sent the student who did it the best to the board. This small experience that first got him thinking about how differently East and West approach the experience of intellectual struggle. This shed new light showing that struggle isn t always a bad thing, it doesn t always mean you re not smart enough to do something, it could simply mean that you need to take more time to understand and assist over and over again until there is an understanding of it, which is why this article was chosen it shows a variety how success is approached on either side of the ... After World War II, the US began to have conflicting views with the Soviet Union which caused a series of proxy wars, one of them occurring in Vietnam. The Soviet Union was trying to make Vietnam one of their satellite nations, a nation that is aligned and under the influence of the Soviet Union, while the US wanted to stop the Soviet Union s influence on other nations. There were differing view on whether or not the US should intervene in vietnam. An illustration of these differing views is seen in Graham Greene s novel The Quiet American where Thomas Fowler, a british journalist, believes in remaining uninvolved in vietnam, while... It was a pity, but you can t always hit your target. Anyway they died in the right cause... they died for democracy (Greene 171). Pyle s carefree tone shows how he was fine with the deaths of many innocent Vietnamese people as long as his own selfish goal of stopping communism was achieved. Pyle did not care about the Vietnamese people because he pushed them aside and said that he was doing to for democracy. In the Nation Magazine s Puppets and Patriots, they criticized the US on how it was put into a position which has become almost habitual, the position of giving support moral, diplomatic, financial to a regime whose only virtue is its anti communism (Puppets). Nation Magazine s purpose in writing this was to expose the US selfish motives and is shown by their critical tone. This is significant because it shows that the US would support poor leaders, including Diem, who had little support from the vietnamese. This proves how Fowlers perspective was more justified because Pyle did not care about the well being of the Vietnamese and chose to support General ThГ© even after seeing the damage that he has caused in vietnam, so that he could satisfy his own selfish needs. However, buying stocks also entails risk because of price fluctuation. The risk will be potentially large in case price falls to zero. In order to avoid risk one may like to buy a call option. • 5. Agriculture In China Since The Late 19th Century Since the agricultural revolution, ninety nine percent of humanity had worked the fields of agriculture in order to survive. Almost nobody had been able to move away from the fields to cities, and people in the cities had almost never wanted to stop being a craftsman to begin a new life as a farmer. Although the latter point remains true to this day, the former has been dramatically altered. With innovations in agriculture as simple as hardened iron plows and better irrigation, slightly more people could make their homes in cities. With the innovation of steam power and the reaper in the late 18th and early 19th century, many more people had to leave farming as farm production increased to join in the steam powered industry in the cites. This created a great migration from farms to cities where farmers learned a low skill, low wage trade in a highly productive factory, out producing high skilled artisans of the same vein. Supply of goods skyrocketed high above the pre industrial era, driving prices way down. With such high production in so many niches of the market, people could actually purchase nonessentials despite earning less money from working in a factory; money was actually worth more. Because living in a city had become cheaper, more farmers were attracted to come to work in a city further increasing this migration. This migration is still happening today in China. Chinese are moving from agricultural to urban areas for the same reasons americans and europeans have been doing since the 17th century. What these factories to create, however, is a large increase in income and wealth inequality; however, this barely matters because relatively everyone is better off. Whether people like it or not, one thing is definite: technology is not going anywhere. Having grown up in the midst of the digital revolution, technology was going to be a part of my life, and it most definitely has. No matter if it is the Internet, computers, cell phones, tablets, video games; I have been exposed to all of them. However, of all the pieces of technologyI have used, the one I cannot live without would have to be my laptop. This year has opened my eyes to how important it is to have a nice laptop. Whether I am taking notes in class, doing research online, typing a paper, surfing the web, or Skyping my family back home, I am always using my laptop. Sure, I still use my cell phone a lot, but I honestly do not use social media on it as I used to. So really the main purposes for my cell phone are what they should be for; making phone calls and sending texts. If I did not have a laptop, it would make going to school more challenging, I would spend much more time at the library using their computers and could not enjoy lying in bed watching my favorite show on Netflix. Of course I could handle not having a laptop. However, after completing my first year away at school, my eyes have been opened to the importance of having one, and I have seen how dependent I am on mine. • 9. Catcalling And Social Media Street harassment, also know as catcalling, is an action that I hate the most. Street harassment is unwanted sayings or gestures that are targeted toward someone in specific based on sexual orientation or gender, and in this case, women. Catcalling can be verbal such as compliments, like, hey, baby. Catcalling can be physical, like groping a part of the body, and it can also be sexual remarks. When I see street harassmenton social media, like in a picture or a video, I feel uncomfortable, so I can t even imagine how some women feel when they have inappropriate comments thrown at them constantly. I think catcalling is the dumbest thing that anyone could have possibly thought of. Women don t deserve to get harassed on the street. We want to get from point A to point B without any interruptions, unless it s with our consent and if it s a friend whom consent was given to. If I have to get stopped on the street for a gross man to comment on my butt or follow me, it is not going to be a very good day. Most women I know, do not enjoy the act of being catcalled, however, research from ILR ( Street Harassment Statistics ) and Hollaback!, a non profit organization, showed that only 3%, out of 4,900 participants in the survey under the age of 40, has found street harassment flattering. The Realism Of Realism And Film The aesthetics of realism in each film can be utilized in many diverse ways to offer certain truths about the world of the film to further express the film s story. These theatrical elements emphasize what the film attempts to relay to the audience; moreover, it intensifies the authenticity of each aspect of the film. The use of real people, on camera interviews, textual information, and of direct address to the camera displays the realism of each film. In Shut up and Sing there is an interview in the beginning of the movie which took place after Natalie voiced her impolite comment about President Bush. This shows the audience that Natalie is in fact sorry she said what she had said but not sorry she had spoken up. Martie furthers her point by saying that their band would not be as eminent as they are now if Natalie restrained her outspoken attitude. Another example is when the Dixie Chicks are interviewed after the release of their new song Not Ready to Make Nice. The interviewer says that public opinion has changed much in the past three years and that Bush s ratings have gone down. Natalie replies that they were compelled to write their newest album. This shows the audience the band s determination to stick with their opinions and that Bush s support has decreased while the band s support has endured. In Spinal Tap, there are several instances in where the band is interviewed. It is relayed to the audience that several drummers that were once apart of Spinal Tap have all died under mysterious circumstances. We all cherish our children s future. And we are all mortal ( Nuclear Test Ban Treaty ). These words were said by John F. Kennedy in June 1963, when there were signs of lessening tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, and signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which forbid nuclear weapon tests or other nuclear explosions under water, in the atmosphere, or in irradiated outer space. Kennedy and his advisers were planning to launch missiles into Soviet territory, but at the last second, he called off his top advisers and canceled the nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis is like the Crusades in early first millennia. Cuba would represent Jerusalem, the parenthetical focus of the Crusades. The U.S. would represent the Christians, who won the Crusades because the United States would eventually win the Cold War. The U.S.S.R. would represent the Muslims, who lost the the Crusades because the Soviets lost the war in the end. • 12. Worlds Beyond The Solar System Worlds Beyond The Solar System Anisa Noor October 21st 2014 SES4U Mr. Humpartzoomian Worlds Beyond The Solar System When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of our Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to think all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way revolve around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in space. Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar System, but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving through space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets, stated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must: orbit a star, have enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must be gravitationally dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence besides the planet s own satellites. Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one star holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then multiply this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we are dealing with. He also examines if foreign born adopted children are more likely to lag behind in school compared to U.S. born adoptees. In addition, he also examines how these variations are associated to racial and ethnic differences. Thomas tests four hypothesis. Hypothesis 1 proposes adopted children have a schooling disadvantage compared to biological peers but the disadvantage is smaller among immigrants compared to U.S. natives. Hypothesis 2 tests whether adopted children of immigrant parents are more likely to fall behind in school compared to their peers with U.S. born parents. There were some lessons that stood out to me the most, and that I thought about after class. The first was in chapter 3 about interpersonal communication and the self. During this chapter, we took a piece of paper and put four people that we knew down. We chose someone who we were just getting to know, and then others that we knew very well or that were very close to us. In this lesson, we were discussing the social penetration theory. The first step is the breadth which is a volunteered amount of information that we tell someone as subjects are being discussed. The second step is depth which is when we began to go deeper into personal information. The four people that I chose were a girl I had just met at work, my sister, my dad, and my boyfriend. After completing the circles and filling in the amount of information that I have covered with them, the girl I work with had the least, and my sister had the most filled in to the core. After completing this lesson, I looked at my paper and realized that almost everyone was more filled in to the core than my relationship with my father. This lesson struck a major cord with me because I never realized how surface level my relationship with my dad was until talking about this lesson. I knew that my father and I were not that close to begin with, but I never knew why. After this lesson, I understood that my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anselm believes that god is both, but how is that possible for a person to be compassionate and not compassionate. This statement is contradictory and does not make logical sense because a person cannot be compassionate and not compassionate. If god is both compassionate and non compassionate then he is indecisive because he cannot decide whether he actually wants to punish an individual. The upfront cost for new airlines is capital intensive. In addition, it s difficult for new airlines to obtain airport slots for takeoff and landing which are determined by the airports. Established airlines already hold the monopoly over slots at certain airports, making it harder for new airlines to infiltrate (Airlines Industry Profile, 2014). The industry is also dominated by five key airlines; American, United, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue which make it difficult for new airlines to gain market share. At 40 of the 100 largest U.S. airports, a single airlinecontrols a majority of the market. At 93 of the top 100, one or two airlines control a majority of the seats (Koenig Mayerowitz, 2015). • 28. Society’s Expectations of a Female’s Body Image Essays Society s Expectations of a Female s Body Image Society plays many roles in peoples lives. The biggest role that society plays with females is how they should appear. All over the television, movies, and different magazine covers, females come into view as looking very thin and beautiful. People that see these famous females begin to idealize that body image. The male gender also visualizes these famous females and thinks that all females should have this slender appearance. As the year 2000 rolled in, actresses and models body weight decreased, and their waiflike bodies became more noticeable in the public s eyes. Both of these articles mainly use the social appeal to make their readers aware of this issue. The last two articles, Perfection The Barbie Body?! written by Julie Hong and Expectations of a Fashion Model authored by Popular Culture, discuss the female s body as an object. These two articles also use social appeal to help the reader better understand how females grow up idealizing an unrealistic body. All six of these articles were all very informative and well written, even though they all used different techniques to get their point across. All of the authors used pathos as their main appeal, but they used it in different forms. The most important rhetorical technique is ethos, which only two of the different articles used. The reason ethos is so important is because it tells the reader whether or not the author s information is reliable. Do You Have a Body Image Problem?! is the most reliable article because the author is a doctor. The Count Of Nevilles Analysis This walk explores the beautiful countryside to the north east of Sheriff Hutton, visiting the hamlet of High Stittenham and the secluded valley of Mowthorpe Dale. The extensive views stretch across the Vale of York. The name Sheriff Hutton derives from the Old English words hoh and tun which, when combined mean farm on the spur of land . The prefix of Sheriff originates from its association with Bertram de Bulmer, the Sheriff of York in 1115, who once held title to the estate. Later the Bulmers married into the powerful Neville family. The Nevilles became lords of the manor in 1331 after the Bulmers male lineage failed. Inside the church is a white alabaster effigy of a young boy wearing a long robe and his head, bearing a coronet, rests on a pillow of winged beasts, possibly gryphons. This statue represents Edward of Middleham, Prince of Wales, the son of Richard III, who died in 1484. Furthermore, a small piece of stained glass above the effigy depicts the Sun in Splendour , a symbol used by the House of York. However, Edward s final resting place remains a subject for debate, as the tomb below is empty! Next to the churchyard is the site of Sheriff Hutton s first motte and bailey castle, erected in 1140 by Bertram de Bulmer. This type of fortress had a wooden tower situated on a raised earthwork called a motte, with an enclosed courtВyard, the bailey, surrounded by a ditch and wooden fence. These structures were easy to build, but still formidable defensive strongholds. From the village, we follow the Ebor Way onto the Howardian Hills and join the Centenary Way which leads to High Stittenham. Various portrayals of the geisha have focused on different aspects of their lifestyle and the different versions also have varying degrees of accuracy in their depictions. In three different films and one book, four different groups try to explain exactly what it was like for people who lived as geishas or alongside these women. Some versions of the story portray the geisha life as a very pleasant one where the role of geisha was an honored title. Others, like Memoirs of a Geisha paint this existence in a more unpleasant life, equating geisha with high class prostitution. Some tell the fantasy version of geisha hood through a modern and decidedly western sensibility and use the profession as a form of othering the Japanese people, while the others tell a far more realistic and eastern perspective of the same topic. The films to be discussed are: Madame Butterfly, the Barbarian and the Geisha, and Memoirs of a Geisha. The book is an autobiography of a real life geisha, written by Sayo Matsuda. In one of the first films to portray a geisha, Madame Butterfly tells the story of a young geisha who falls in love with an American who marries her and impregnates her, only to abandon her to marry a proper, white wife. Although we managed to put aside our differences to finish the project, not many positive memories remained from that collaboration other than the negativity and awkwardness between us. One of the many magnificent features of the house is the automated kitchen. This kitchen pampered the family by preparing each meal, washing the dishes, and serving them all at the dinner table, all responsibilities you would expect of a typical household. Early in the text, Bradbury comprehensively describes the kitchen s seemingly perfect nature, In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cold glasses of milk (There Will Come Soft Rains 1). The precision and accuracy of the breakfast prepared was impeccable: the milk cold, eggs and toast prepared to perfection, and exactly sixteen slices of bacon to feed a family. With such an ideal, why would anyone need or want to cook breakfast, when their effort could easily be replaced? Instead of relying on themselves, one would instead choose to rely on this automated kitchen. The more someone ceases to rely on themselves, the less responsible they ultimately become. Therefore, Bradbury s brief, yet powerful, use of imagery supports the idea that it in such a technologically advanced environment, taking on basic responsibilities is ... Success is so sought after because, our comprehension of excellence is enhanced by contrasting it with something we constantly hear about: success. Also, I am not implying that one is invariably good and the other is always undesirable. It is evident that success pales in the brilliance of excellence. In this play we meet two star crossed lovers who meet at a party on one night and then, almost instataneously, plegde themselves for each other and plan to marry, which then leads to six people dying including themselves. Romeo and Juliet should have taken it slow with their affairs in order to eliminate the violence and death that ensued from them falling in love, encourage a healthier road to peace in order to unite both families, and to better encourage a more joyful relationship, as mentioned by Friar Lurence. • 42. Analysis Of Alexander Pope s Frankenstein Throughout history, humans have been fascinated the inherent bond that exists between ourselves and Nature. During the eighteenth century, known also as the Reformation period, there was a push in European society towards science and reason being the epicenter of culture. During this time, Alexander Pope wrote the poem Essay on Man which was intended to be an outline of perennial, universal truths. The emphasis was primarily on the nature of reason rather than Nature itself. After this time period came the Romantic period, lasting from 1785 1832. It was in 1818 that Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, also known as The Modern Prometheus , an imaginative tale about a monster created by man. The relationships between Nature and the characters are dynamic in that they change frequently. They appear, in many instances, to be a vehicle for expressing emotion. By examining and writing about the way humans interact with the Nature surrounding them, Pope and Shelley made it possible to analyze and highlight common relationships between humans and Nature during their lifetime; for Pope and his peers, it was more about reason and ___ (word for only coming to conclusions based on ur five senses), while during Shelley s time period, people tended to have a more emotional relationship with Nature.
