The Disastrous Effects Of Evil In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of...
Evil s Disastrous Effects Bell defines evil as human actions or inactions that harm other people. I
would add to that qualification without justification or excuse (Leong, 2004, para. 1). This quote
provides an accurate description of what evil generally is; it is not just an action, it can also be a lack
of action. However, evil is also, in most cases, what causes the aforementioned action or lack there of.
Additionally, evil is unjustifiable in any way. In fact, anyone who seeks to justify evil has likely been
consumed by evil themselves. That is one of the greatest dangers of evil; it has the ability to infect,
and sometimes even corrupt, the most noble men. Evil exists throughout the world, and it can have
disastrous effects on mankind; it defiles morals, leads to wicked actions, and turns men into animals.
Evil Defiles Morality Evil has the ability to defile and corrupt the morals of even the most noble
hearted men. There is nothing more efficient at corrupting sound morality than pure evil. I said I could
see that very well, but what I wanted was a certain quantity of rivets and rivets were really what Mr.
Kurtz wanted (Conrad, 1990, p. 44). In this quote from Heart of Darkness, the protagonist, Marlow,
chooses to lie in order to get what he wants despite his previous words about lying, You know I hate,
detest, and can t bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but simply because it
appeals me (Conrad, 1990, p. 42). Even though Marlow

The following is the input that was shared: I would encourage students to get involved on campus. I
enjoyed my time at the school, and had good experiences when doing projects with classmates. While
my time was different than many others (online), I hope it was representative of what others have
experienced. I would say having the opportunity to meet and get mentored was important. My time
knowing my mentor, he trusted in me and helped keep me on track to make sure I was handling my
business off the football field. I would encourage future students to come for the small class size, the
attention given by professors. Come motivated and get a mentor. Mentorship is very import to all
youth, but especially black youth. I believe it takes motivation to be successful, but many of these kids
lack the motivation. That isn t always their fault. Mentors can help them see and understand where
they can find the motivation within themselves. College is definitely what you make it, get involved if
something should change. Plan ahead, know your program that you are studying. A big influence for
most people would for most people would be an influential African American male role model on

Metamorphosis Kafka Analysis
The title of the story The Metamorphosis , by Franz Kafka is misleading. Merriam Webster defines
metamorphosis as the change of physical form, structure or substance, especially by supernatural
means, a striking alteration in appearance, character or circumstance . While there is an obvious
change in the appearance of the character Gregor Samsa, it becomes apparent after reading the story,
that his appearance is not the only thing that transforms. In the story, Gregor wakes up one morning to
realize that he has changed into a giant insect. Not only did he transform into a creature, but he was
also stripped of his humanity. The author Franz Kafka uses this symbolism to focus the reader s
attention on one character that mirrors himself and his life. Both Kafka and Gregor are traveling
salesman from Prague, experience dysfunctional personal relationships throughout their life and suffer
from psychological conditions including alienation and isolation. Franz Kafka s life, a heartbreaking
story of human conflict, parallels with the main character of metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa.
Franz Kafka was born into a middle class German speaking Jewish family from Prague, Bohemia,
now the Czech Republic. Although Kafka obtained a degree in law, he spent his short adult life
working as a traveling insurance salesman. He considered this job as a bread job , a job performed to
only pay bills. At the time Kafka wrote Metamorphosis he had been employed for four years. In
parallel, Kafka s main character in the Metamorphosis possessed a job as a traveling salesman for four
years to pay off the family debt and support them. He is dissatisfied with his job, which is noted when
he says O God, he thought, what a demanding job I ve chosen, day in, day out on the road... (Kafka
p.612). I have to deal with the problems of traveling, the worries about train connections, irregular bad
food, temporary and constantly changing human relationships, which never came from the hear, To
hell with it all! (Kafka p.612). The metamorphosis of Gregor liberates him from his dreaded job, as
well as, releases him from his financial obligation to his parents.
Kafka s writings are significantly influenced by his conflicted relationships with both his

Asthma Case Study Essay
This paper will review a case study of a 30 year old patient who has been diagnosed with asthma and
allergies. The patient was put on the medications; albuterol, (Proventil), salmeterol (Sere vent), and
montelukast (Singular). The patient s provider told the patient to come back in two weeks for follow
up. If at that time she is still wheezing, he would put her on an oral corticosteroid (Kelleher, Sheryl
MS, CFNP, Class Assignment). This paper will define what asthma and its pathophysiology is, as well
as review the patients prescribed medications of albuterol, salmeterol, and montelukast. Lastly, a
review of corticosteroids and their adverse effects, dosing, and other implications will be discussed.
Asthma can be defined as a chronic pulmonary disease that involves inflammation and
bronchospasms. To fully understand asthma and its attributes, one must understand the
pathophysiology of asthma, including the lower respiratory tract, and the bronchiolar smooth muscle.
Stated simply, the major role of the respiratory system is to bring oxygen into the human body, and
remove carbon dioxide (Adams, Holland, Urban,). This is nonetheless respiration, or the exchange of
gases. Another phenomenon occurring in our respiratory system is ventilation. This is when the air
moves in and out of the lungs.
Bronchiolar smooth muscle is located in the Bronchiole and plays a very important role in the
physiology as well. They either contract or relax. Relaxation of the bronchiole smooth

Skateboarding Research Papers
Skateboarding is really easy to do when you come to think about, all it really is balancing on a board
with wheels and finding your dominant foot and leg to push yourself with. The first step to conquering
the board is to get over come your fear of riding. This has to be one of the most important steps
because if you don t get over your fear you will most definitely fall on your butt or even worst your...
face! Now do you really want to fall on your face or butt? Yea that what I thought. But the most easy
way to conquer your fear is to get on a board on a flat street and have a friend push you down the
street. Once you are comfortable with the board the next step would be to find your balance. The most
simple way of doing this is... just standing on a board on a flat street/drive way and just stand on the
board in till you have found and achieve your balance on the board. ... Show more content on

regret will increases the pain in your injurie. There isn t really a way to achieve find your dominant leg

Essay on General George Washington and The Continental Army
The American Revolution was a great time of change for America as a nation. With this change new
heroes and ideals of life, liberty, and freedom were formed. Spearheading these new ideals was
General George Washington and his continental army, but the road ahead of Washington and his men
was not an unproblematic one. The winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania proved this to Washington
and his men. Yet the true American ideal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were never
forgotten in their battle. General George Washington gained command of the continental army in July
3, 1775 from the directions of General Artemus Ward who said, The Continental Congress having now

Valley Forge atop such a high plateau was near completely cut off from supply routes making food,
clothing, and weaponry very scarce. Soldiers were treated to the worst conditions possible at Valley
Forge. Many were near naked and many were starving to death. Also dieses such as Dysentery and
Typhus ran rampant at Valley Forge. These conditions alone accounted for the lives of hundreds of
American soldiers that winter. Yet in early spring at Valley Forge General Nathanel Greene was
appointed quartermaster. Conditions for the members of the continental army greatly improved. Food
was in abundance as well as clothing and soldiers took full advantage of it. While the American
soldiers were very valiant, they lacked the discipline and skills of a true army. This soon changed will
the arrival of Baron Von Stueben. Von Stueben quickly turned the continental army into a true army.
Leaving Valley Forge Washington and his men had a renewed sense of patriotism. They were now a
united army with the skills to defeat the British although they had suffered great losses they had made
great achievements and were now truly an army. The winter of Valley Forge exemplified the true will
of General George Washington and his troops. They were united and they were ready to fight for one
cause life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Under the British rule American s god given rights
were taken from. As well as many unlawful taxes were imposed upon them. The British put into

Meditation And Religion
The question I will be answering first is the first question on the question guide. The ritual that I will
be talking about comes from the Buddhist religious movement. One thing that I found very interesting
is the practices of meditation that the Buddhist people use to help find peace within themselves. On
buddhanet.net, I found probably the simplest yet most accurate answer to the question What is
Meditation? That is Meditation is a conscious effort to change how the mind works. The Pali word for
meditation is bhavana which means to make grow or to develop (buddhanet.net) . A Buddhist
meditates for a couple of different reasons. One is to find enlightenment; another is to create more
mindfulness for someone to help better there mindset. I personally enjoyed learning about this topic

A Girl and Her Downfall After a Man Attacks Her
She was alone, making her way home on a beautiful summer s night. The colour filled skies and the
warm breeze persuaded her to take the long way home. Walking through the empty, lifeless streets.
With every small step she took she smiled. Everything was falling in to place. Her life was back on
track, she found him. The man of her dreams. The person to make her feel alive, to show her she hadn
t been living. Smiling as she walked further and further down the motionless streets. But little did she
know that he was there. Waiting, watching, following her every move. Hiding in the shadows, waiting
for his chance to strike. He followed her step by step, his breathing increasing as he got closer. She
was completely oblivious, so happy that she was left vulnerable. He inched closer and closer, his heart
pounding louder with every waft of her scent. His adrenaline growing at the thought of the
unthinkable act he was going to commit. He gripped her from behind with one arm tightly wrapped
around her petite waist, placing his large free hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Her
once so pretty eyes, wide in disbelief as he dragged her struggling body in to the darkness of the
shadows. Stabbing her with a large needle to stop her from fleeing, he then violently threw her to the
hard cold ground. He moved over her and she clamped her eyes shut. Unable to look at her attacker as
he rendered her helpless. She could feel his breath staggering on her neck. His uneven breathing

Why Are Stereotypes Dangerous and What Can Be Done to...
Why Are Stereotypes Dangerous and What Can Be Done to Reduce Them? Very often, in our
everyday life, we tend to make certain generalizations about things and people around us. This is
because we are constantly exposed to heaps of information, and in order to cope with the complexity
of the world around us, we need to generalize and categorize.[1] Sometimes we do this on purpose,
with some intention. However, very often we do this subconsciously, unaware of what we are doing.
Many people generalize on others according to their clothes, profession, origin, way of speaking, and
many other, outer markers. This sort of thinking could be very dangerous, and it can lead us to
creating stereotypes. Stereotype is a term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To prove this to be true, some of my colleagues and me had some people from our environment
interviewed on this topic. It is interesting that most of them had similar answers, and almost everyone
said the English were reserved, snobbish, and even evil. Americans were fat and stupid, self centered.
Although none of them would admit to be stereotyping, they all somehow knew this was true. Many
of them, when asked if they would ever live in these countries responded negativelly, because the
people were bad. Thus they had some prejudices formed against these people, and did not want to do
anything to help them understand and appreciate the other culture. Discrimination When the
stereotypes we have formed last for too long in our minds, they can grow and develop into something
more serious than prejudice. This is when we start acting and treating other people in a different, often
bad and inhumane way.[7] This is another possible danger of using stereotypes, which is called
discrimination. There are many different types of discrimination, based on appearance, age,
nationality, sex, etc. One of the most common forms of discrimination is based on a well known
stereotype found in many movies, magazines, and even in cartoons. It is the stereotype of a dumb
blonde. [8] It is an image of a girl who is physically attractive, but lacks brains. This stereotype is so
powerful, that very often all blonde girls

Driving Forces, Responses and Legacies of the 1968 Uprisings
The movements for change across Europe in 1968 differed between Eastern and Western Europe due
to the catalysts and the responses they provoked (because of differing political systems), but the
revolts across Europe in 1968 left similar legacies of improved living conditions, détente and cultural

Due to a few Eastern Europe countries demanding political freedom and Western Europe demanding
freedom from capitalism, the reasons for the movements of change across Europe in 1968 differed
greatly. In Eastern Europe, (most notably in Czechoslovakia) citizens tried to gain political freedom
from the USSR through uprisings. When Leonid Brezhnev ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Midwifery Care Shortage Essay
Introduction
There is a predicted midwifery workforce shortage (The Department of Health, 2013). To address this,
the Australian Government has been implementing measures to support midwives to work to their full
scope of practice including increasing midwifery care in community settings (Department of Health
and Ageing, 2010).
This research proposal aims to understand and interpret metropolitan hospital based lived experience
of providing extramural midwifery care after hospital based midwifery experience.
From this understanding any issues that impact negatively on midwives may be identified and the risk
mitigated.
Contextual review
The majority of maternity care is provided within a hospital setting and within a medical model
(Owens, et al., 2016).
The Australian Government policy is to increase women s access to midwifery care within their local
community (Department of Health and Ageing, 2010) however the majority of publically employed
metropolitan midwives are siloed into discrete areas of practice (antenatal, birthing, postnatal care and
home visiting). Providing care outside of a hospital setting is new to many metropolitan Australian
midwives.
Literature review
A literature review was undertaken in August and September 2016 through Queensland University of
Technology (QUT) library service to ascertain if this experience has been studied and to identify other
similar studies and how they were designed.
The first search used the key words: midwife experiences

‘Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck is a classic novel, tragedy, written in a social tone. The

Curley s wife all confess their deep loneliness. Each of these characters searches for a friend, someone
to help them measure the world, as Crooks says. For George, the hope of such friendship dies with

and most obvious, is physical strength. As the novel opens, Steinbeck shows how Lennie possesses
physical strength beyond his control, when he cannot help killing mice. Physical strength is very
important for men like George and Lennie. Curley, as a symbol

Analysis Of Hoop Dreams By Steve James
Hoop Dreams was a documentary made in 1994, directed by Steve James. The film follows two boys
named Arthur and William from eight to twelfth grade as they chase their dream of becoming
professional basketball players. They both go to Saint Joseph s High School, the prestige suburban
school famous for their basketball team. But when Arthur has to go to a regular public high school
because of economic issues, the film becomes a documentation of both the boys, with the help of their
families, battling the physical and social obstacles that are blocking their path.
One of the most subtle methods of manipulation used in Hoop Dreams was the music in scenes that
they wanted to resonate with you. For example, when Arthur is at Saint Joseph s at basketball practice,
his basketball hero, Isiah Thomas, shows up to give a speech. There is a slow motion shot of Isiah
playing with Arthur on the court, who has a huge smile on his face, and in the background there is
what you could call inspirational music. This was used most likely to show how much Arthur idolized
Isiah, therefore, showing how badly Arthur wanted to play basketball. It gives the audience hope that
Arthur will make his dream a reality, which will make it that much more exciting when he eventually
does.
In an interview with Arthur s mother, you find out that St. Joseph s wouldn t pay for all of Arthur s
education like they said they would, which is terrible news because the Agee s couldn t afford to send

With regards to continuous restructuring of the company. This issue is a big factor that even stimulates
the first problem. With the re evaluation of the organizational structure the employees tend to lose
confidence and trust in those in charge and therefore their performance is hindered because of this.
Concerning the hiring skills of the company it is very inefficient such as recruiting college kids,
newspaper advertisements, employment agencies and job notices on job search websites. These hiring
skills are very costly and time consuming. The high expectations of management to meet high quotas
is unreasonable and thus puts pressure on the salesmen causing them to perform unethical actions such
as posting incorrect sales figures just to please their managers. Options that can assist the firm in these
issues are by management evaluating the company and making a consistent and permanent
organizational structure. To make the hiring process more efficient it needs to be shorter in length, be
specific in the characteristics of the potential employee to avoid the many steps and narrow the
amount of hiring methods to reduce costs. Not stretching quotas is another factor that needs to be
considered by management. This can be done through lowering their expectations of sales in the same
time frame that currently exists making them realistic, give incentives if they need to be stretched,
employ feedback from sales persons so as to assign comfortable quotas around each

Descriptive Essay On Beauty
I had to decorate my head with flowers and was looking exquisite. My father had prohibited me from
using scented perfumes. I also did not have slightest of interest in that. I have been brought up in
nature. Where does beauty live? Is it in jewelry or clothes, in the body, in soul or in the eye of the
beholder? I was wondering.
Four chariots named Rug, Yarju, Sam and Atharva were constructed. The great father Brahma sat on
Rug. Twayi and Anwikshika were sitting in Yarju. Varta and Niti were in Atharva. Yarju was decorated
with beautiful flowers. A drape of flowers covered the front of the chariot. The fourth chariot Atharva
was appearing like a bouquet of red flowers.
I sat in the chariot Sam, which was decorated with vines and fragrant flowers. In front of me, a
garland of white jasmine was hanging. I was bathing with the fragrance of the flowers. My whole
body, my mind, and my soul were all filled with fragrance.
No one could see me from outside the chariot. But, I could see through the vines and thorns. I did not
know the logic behind bringing me to heaven like a prisoner. I was sitting with suppressed curiosity,
but was enjoying the scenery of the Indraloka.
Even though heaven s beauty amazed me, my mind was thinking about my motherland, the earth. My

After the discussion, I was supposed to come out of the chariot as if for a display. That time I could

Listening, Smell, And Taste With Forts
47758 Touch, Look, Listen, Smell, and Taste With Forts
Think back to a favorite childhood memory and the sense that most often triggers it. Does the feel of
dough between your fingers remind you of being in the kitchen with Grama? Does the color
combination of red and purple stir familiar feelings inside you? Perhaps the spring sun on your skin
gathers memories of backyard games with neighborhood friends.
Most of our powerful memories associate an experience with a sense. These sense based reactions
then become triggers for recall. Sensory experiences and, therefore, sensory play, are valuable in the
development of our children.
Engaging the senses promotes learning and retention. Touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste allow
humans to explore the world. With each interaction, we take in more valuable information, even
unconsciously. Experience is our teacher.
Solving problems and participating in make believe comes with exploring the world through play.
These activities express creativity and build confidence. Furthermore, sensory play develops and
refines the senses. This valuable childhood activity proves therapeutic, improves motor skills,
increases awareness of the world and promotes language acquisition.
Using Fort Magic kits fosters the use of the senses naturally. Children of all ages love forts and spend
hours on end playing and imaging, all the while learning and developing healthily. Cognitive, social,
emotional, physical, creative and linguistic skills

Serial Killer Vs Mass Killer
Over the course of the semester we discussed many things in this class one being serial and mass
murderers. Under that umbrella we discussed the differences between the two, the victims they may
attack, the reasons why they kill, personal backgrounds, and explanations to why they kill. At the end
of this course we were asked to pick a type of killer and explain what it is we learned from them. For
this paper I chose to talk about serial killers. The killers I chose to discuss are Paul Bernardo and Karla
Homolka but we will get to them later on.
Serial killers differ from mass murderers because serial killers kill over a period of time with a cooling
off period whereas mass murderers have one big killing with four or more victims and no cooling ...

However, there was some childhood trauma for Paul. At a young age his father was convicted of child

course of the semester we have discussed many types of killers such as partner groups, serial, and
mass murderers. We discussed why killers kill and we also discussed specific killers. I have grown to

Comparison Of Creon In Sophocles s Antigone
The ancient Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, Never go to excess, but let
moderation be your guide. This is a lesson that us as a society can learn and practice; it warns of the
dangers of extremism in all aspects. Moderation is an important balance in the context of our everyday
lives because our desires cannot trump our ability to make positive decisions. If we base our decisions
on current events, the effects may come back to harm us in the end. In Sophocles tragedy, Antigone
audiences are shown the consequences of going against the lessons of moderation and the ways in
which characters let their desires overcome their decision making. Both and Creon and Antigone learn
this lesson when they, in fact let their own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The way he addresses them exemplifies his unwillingness to change for anybody, he finds it almost
laughable that they would alter his actions. Creon is again shown a good argument, that his own son
will die if he kills Antigone; however, because he does not accept that other people can alter his way
of doing things, he dismisses his son s threat later in the passage. Only a stubborn person would be
faced with the suicide of their son, and brush it off as bluff, and deny their involvement. Blindsided by
his own stubbornness, Creon finally meets his faith when he heads to Antigone s place of captivity to
see Her [Antigone] hanging by her neck... whereon the poor demented boy [Haemon] Leaned on his
sword and thrust it deeply into his own side. (159) Creon arrived to see Antigone dead and his son
killing himself, however there can t be sympathy for someone who brought it upon themselves. He
dismissed all people who got in his way, his son as well as his constituents, and he was met with the
unavoidable. As predicted by his son, he killed himself, therefore proving that Creon s stubbornness
lead directly to his son s death. Creon finally accepts his wrongs, but that is after he dismissed and
denied all contrasting arguments. Creon s downfall is by no doubt caused by his stubbornness, he had

Reflection Of A Discourse Community
Introduction
Paul Ryan once said, Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a
community of persons working together. We do not often realize how important it is for everybody to
work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to
form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non profit organization, sport team, etc.
This whole can make reference to a discourse community.
According to John Swales, discourse communities are unions where individuals have a common
purpose, and communicate to achieve this. There are six characteristics that make up a discourse
community. They are a set of common public goals, mechanisms of communication among its ...

Literature Review
In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse
community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the
concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as different
from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities recruits its
members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities recruits its
[members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share similar
linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a common goal.
They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the utilization of
genres like a discourse community does.
Moreover, it is established that genres are how things get done, when language is used to accomplish
them (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse

Research Paper On Pizza House
Ethnographic Study on DDDN
Every time when I argue about what to eat for lunch with friends, we never come to a single
agreement. Then one person comes up with an idea and says, How about pizza? Everyone silences for
a moment, nods heads, and then head to DDDN Pizza House. Pizza is modifiable depending on tastes
of the customers: toping, thickness of the dough and the way it is cooked. It is a fast food that
nowadays is accessible to everyone at anytime, regardless of the cultural and socioeconomic status.
On the other hand, eating pizza may hold different meanings to the people depending on their
background financial position, ages, gender et cetera. For instance, a seven years old kid might
consider pizza as the food that she can eat only on special occasions like birthday party. However for a
university student, for me as an example, pizza is no more than a cheap, tasty fast food that I eat when
I am running out of time to have a proper meal.
For the ethnography paper, I decided to study DDDN pizza house. Spectrum of customers of DDDN is

Support System In Kewauna s Ambition By Paul Tough
Success: a word that is defined as being good at what you do and how you do it. There are many
elements of success. Some key elements are grit, a support system and commitment. Grit is having the
strength to never give up when things get tough, no matter how tough situations get. Having a support
system is having people by your side helping you get through anything and everything in the best way
they can! Commitment is keeping up with something and sticking with it every step of the way until
the job is done. Kewauna, from Kewauna s Ambition , a portion from How Children Succeed , written
by Paul Tough, showed those three elements: grit by never giving up, having a support system that
included a tutor, family and classmates, and determination while she tried her hardest to do her best
every day while attempting to escape her former lifestyle and being enrolled in a program. While

Changes Of The Youth Sector Over The Past 100 Years
There have been significant changes in the youth sector over the past 100 years that have had an

The 1870 Education Act obliged local authorities to provide primary education for all children aged 5

confirmed that the Local Education Authorities also provided secondary schools; however the places

poorer children had to take days off school to work to earn money to attend school. An 1880 Act made

In 1907, Lord Robert Baden Powell brought in scouting originally for boys but in 1910 his sister
Agnes started the Girl scouts also known as Girl guides. Lord Robert Baden Powell was a British
general during the Boer war of 1899 1900. It was during the Boer war that Baden Powell wrote down
a guide to Scouting. Initially meant for military purposes, after the war he felt it could be used as a
focus for young boys to give them more meaning in life (Pettinger. T, 2009). This lead to other non
statutory services such as Cubs, Brownies, Rainbows etc. During the first world war it was difficult to
keep these services up and running with children being evacuated out of the city and young people
being signed up for military service; but they did have an alternative. Churches across the countryside
were training adults and young people to run their own non statutory services such as scouts and the
YMCA (Young Men s Christian Association). Later in the twentieth century concerns were raised
about the number of young people not in membership of youth organisation. This led to the first
attempt to register all young people in 1941 (Byrne. S, 2009). This was during the Second World War
and just like the first, churches across the countryside in Britain trained and hired adults for non
statutory services. In 1960 the Albemarle report was introduced to evaluate the youth service and give
guidance on how to engage young people, to teach them the

Negative Effects Of Napoleon Bonaparte
The Napoleonic Age was the most controversial time period. Some people thought Napoleon was a
reformer, while others thought he was an absolute dictator. One thing is for sure though, that he
shaped France/Europe into the continent/country is is today. Napoleon was very narcissistic and cruel,
and did not value human life. At the same time, he believed in education and instruction. Also, he
positively influenced the schools and created the Napoleonic Code, which solved a lot of France s
problems. Napoleon Bonaparte had a negative impact on France, because he mistreated the rights that
every human should obtain, created a bad image for other countries, and only really cared about
absolute power.
Napoleon was born in Corsica, Italy and was entered directly into the Military, at age ten. Napoleon s
leadership, and role as emperor, was heavily based around the fact that all of his childhood was being
trained in the military! Some people view this in a negative light (seeing other people just as a target,
and appreciating human life.) Some people on the other hand, view this in a positive light (Being a
good instructor, and knowing how to make the right moves with politics.) During the French
revolution the citizens of France tried to create a republic, and when they failed continuously,
Napoleon Bonaparte stepped up and became a strong leader in France. In 1799, the government
started to grow more and more corrupt, and that s when Napoleon came into play. Napoleon was an

The Relationship Between Mother and Daughter in James...
The Relationship Between Mother and Daughter in James Cain s Mildred Pierce
I have always been of the belief that in order to truly love, hate must exist within the core of the
relationship. Nowhere in modern fiction is this dictum examined more accurately than in the novel by
James Cain, Mildred Pierce. Looking at the concept in a familial context, James Cain has created two
well developed characters, Mildred Pierce and her daughter, Veda, that not only emphasizes the nature
of mother daughter relationships, but looks at how love and hate permeates the very essence of the
relationship. The Irish poet Thomas Moore once described the fascination of these violently
fluctuating emotions, When I loved you, I can t but allow/ I had many ... Show more content on

Yet, if we look closely at the relationship between these two, the relationship seems to be a reversal of
this theory; it is the mother, not the daughter that can t imagine separation. In fact, the mother takes on
the persona of the daughter and daughter acts as an uncaring caretaker.
In certain sections in the novel, Veda is the mother and Mildred is the helpless, unproven daughter.
Cain ends several chapters with the mother, Mildred, exclaiming to the daughter, Veda, ...Every good
thing that happens is on account of you, if Mother only had sense enough to know it (Cain 88). These
proclamations only further advance the capitulation of the tenuous strings of control Mildred employs
over Veda.
Because females are more often trained to pay attention to inner feelings and emotional relationships,
it is usually the daughter... who feels responsible for the mother (Phillips 107). But Veda is not the
typical daughter, for Veda, the relationship she shares with Mildred is secondary to her own personal
agenda to ascend to the class of the elite.
In part, tensions arise because patriarchal propaganda creates ambivalence in daughter about the value
of their relationship with their mothers. Daughters long for closeness with their mothers but they are
confused by the images of mothers as the enemy, mothers as having low status, mothers as neurotic
(Phillips 47). This is a constant theme in Veda s interaction with

The Revolutionary Revolution And The Revolution
As Mao s political enemies were purged, he soon started to build the new type of government and
reconstruct the orders in the nation. First, he believed that only by using a triple alliance of cadres,
revolutionary organizations and the army, which represented the most significant three parts in the
revolution, could China go back to the right track. In order to consolidate this alliance, Maoist leaders
declared that a revolutionary committee was necessary and the only way to reorganize the political
power (Meisner, 331). However, the revolutionary spirits were not under Mao s control anymore. The
proletariat classes, by 1968, were using extremely violent ways to express their devotion to this
revolution. So secondly, Mao strongly depended on PLA, which now became peerless people s army
and personally formed and led by our great leader Chairman Mao... (Meisner, 340). In addition to the
army, leaders like Zhou Enlai made efforts to rebuild the Party and reestablish the authority of the
state bureaucracy (Meisner, 340; Macfarquhar Schoenhals, 287). Yet, the cost of the demobilization

Bias And Stereotyping
Bias and stereotyping can both be harmful for self esteem and the developmental process in children.
Bias is not only harmful for the target group since it lowers the self esteem, but the group who feels
superiority over the other is also harmed. The feeling of being superior disconnects a person from
reality. Too much of self esteem reduces the appreciation of others and may even slow down progress
for the beholder. Stereotyping creates preconceived notions in the minds of children and adults due to
which they fail to see others for what they actually are and rather judge them on the basis of
information that is misguided and obsolete. Stereotyping results in developing strong perspectives of
people who are different and causes prejudice.

Satan In The War Of Art Essay
Evil, chaos, and mass destruction are words that surface the mind when Satan is mentioned. An
expression of pure evil, Satan is often looked at as one to steer afar from. Yet, there is a time and place
of everything and even the character of Satan serves a purpose. For there is no good without its
opposing force evil.
If you look at yourself and all things you love about yourself you will realize that all of these qualities
do not come from not you , they are more of external loves that only exist in relation to you . For
example, one may love mango smoothies yet there are not you until you drink it and it is digested into
your body but then you don t have it, and that s not when you love it. One may love watching movies
or going for hikes, an external love of your experience of the world. Appreciating and loving
everything in the world for it makes you up is the first step in understanding why Satan is not

Domestic Violence Among Black And Blue
Why is it So Hard to See Black and Blue ? According to the Salvation Army and Care Haven, it is
Hard to See Black and Blue on a White upper class woman because viewers focus on her gold and

with something serious: domestic violence. Within the last decade, there has been an increase in
reported incidents of domestic violence among upper class renowned Americans males. Martha Ross,

The Janissary corps distinct social class and special privileges soon brought more harm than good to
the Sultans of the eighteenth Century. The group of men grew corrupt and lived above the law. Not
even the poor were given mercy. A prime example of this can be found in Lady Montague s Turkish

households to pay teeth money. The lawlessness of these men grew so unbearable that Lady Montague
also observes and writes about, how tis the Emperor s interest to flatter [the janissaries] (Montagu,

Charles XII of Sweden after the Swedish defeat under the hands of Peter I of Russia in the Battle of
Poltava of 1709. In response to the Swedish defeat, Ahmed declared war against Russia and won the
Ottoman Empire s most notorious victory over Russia. Never before had the Ottoman forces come so
near to breaking the Russian power. The invasion, however, was halted in response to the incursion of
Safavids. Aside from the war, Ahmed left the finances of the Empire in a flourishing state

Effects Of Dutch Colonization Of Indonesia
Dutch colonization is one of the main influences on modern Indonesia. According to Dutch
Colonization the Dutch controlled Indonesia for nearly 300 years which sprouted many nationalistic
ideas (Dutch Par 2). Indonesia later became independent in 1945 with other countries such as the
United States of America recognizing it as an independent nation. Dutch occupation directly affected
the modern Indonesian political scene, the global spice trade and local Indonesian religion.
Dutch colonialism has greatly influenced the Indonesian governmental system. Dutch occupation
began in the 1600s where the Dutch established Indonesia as a Dutch colony forcefully using superior
weapons and firepower. Dutch colonialism was extremely harsh with various ... Show more content on

Dutch colonization took hold of one of the largest producers of spice in the world Indonesia and its
entire supply of spice. The Dutch controlled the global spice market by controlling the amount of
spice produced to increasing demand in Europe causing the price of spice to increase to make the
maximum amount of profit effectively monopolizing it through force numerous trade routes were
developed with neighbouring countries (Wright Par 4)
. Eventually, as the Dutch lost control of Indonesia, the amount of spice was not regulated causing the
price of spice to decrease as it would be more accessible and be sold in larger quantities. The Dutch
had amazing business skills and took advantage of what they could in Indonesia and monopolized the
spice trade. This caused them to gain great amounts of profit with no real competition. This, however,
was lost as they lost control over Indonesia causing the supply of spice to increase and spices native to
Indonesia to be grown elsewhere. The global market for spice then drastically changed with spice
becoming more accessible removing the barrier of exclusivity causing spice to be less valuable. In
addition to affecting the Entire world, Dutch colonialism also affected the Indonesian people

Leadership s Enduring Success By Richard L. Hughes And...
In the opening of this paper the below description of the need for strategic leadership and the difficulty
in defining it can both be seen. In Becoming a Strategic Leader: Your Role in Your Organization s
Enduring Success by Richard L. Hughes and Katherine Colarelli Beatty define this difficulty
beautifully in their opening. The book opens with a description of the difficulty of learning to surf. As
you stand looking at the beautiful ocean, you move to begin paddling out through the waves only to
fail each time at getting up and successfully riding a wave all the way to shore. It speaks of trying and
practicing at home, only to be thrown when the moment counts. The imagery of attempting to learn to

The topic of this paper will not be to define strategic leadership, and but perhaps more importantly
identify the top five characteristics of strategic leaders in leadership roles in general, not just military
or business settings. This paper will address the difficulty in defining strategic leadership by
narrowing down a specific set of qualities or characteristics required to lead in that position. Since
there is no definitive definition for strategic leadership and the focus will turn to what qualities belong
to a strategic leader and thereby find the very elusive definition so many who are called upon to lead
strategically desire. The primary research question for this paper will be, If one were to develop the
essential list of characteristics for a strategic leader and cull that list down to the top five
characteristics needed for success in the position of any civilian primary leader, what would the list of
qualifications contain? This question will be answered by looking at strategic leadership in civilian
leadership setting, while utilizing principles and insight from the military world of leadership, this will
surely be a varied and complex list. The list, however, will be narrowed down utilizing the same arena
of sources and opinions with success stories associated with each characteristic. It will take a good
amount of research and a variety of both civilian and military sources in order to

Hobbit Movie Comparison
Film Review: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
When The Hobbit began entitled as The Unexpected Journey in late 2012, its trip to become a
movement picture version, only two films were considered: 2012 s The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again. With the remarkable success of both movies, Peter
Jackson decided to come up with the trilogy last year s The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, as well
as altered the title of the ending film to The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies. There have been
some complaints from fans about that conclusion, but regardless, it s safe to say The Hobbit: The
Battle Of The Five Armies brings a lot of enjoy and fun for its viewer.
Where The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ends, we actually see said sadness take place but it
rapidly grants a way to the last film s main description thrust. With the empire of Man and Elves
trying to resolve the promises that Thorin Oakenshield, made in the previous parts, the recently
crowned dwarf king select to let the empire fend for themselves. He has his gold, and as soon as he
discovers the Arkenstone, he ll be pleased to just lord over the mountain. Of course, the Orc armies, ...

Similarities Between James Garfield And Boo Radley A...
Imagine if someone was sentenced to forty years in prison, for a crime they did not commit. Well this
happened to two people on May 25, 1975. Ricky Jackson and Wiley Bridgeman went to jail for a
murder that they did not commit. They were released on November 21, 2014. This explains what a
mockingbird is. A mockingbird is someone who is innocent and does nothing but good for the world.
James Garfield and Boo Radley are both mockingbirds because they both tried to make the world a
better place, then they are expelled for their positive actions, and then they are finally their lives are
exposed for their actions. James Garfield and Boo Radley both tried to make the world a better place.
Garfield sought to finally move forward with his agenda for civil service reform and other initiatives.

Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom. People said he existed, but Jem and I had never seen
him. People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows. When
people s azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them (Lee 9), This quote is
describing Boo Radley, and how the town sees him. This is giving Boo Radley a bad reputation, even
though he is not a bad person. However, a disgruntled attorney who was refused a political
appointment changed all that. On July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau (1841 82) fired two shots at Garfield
while the president was en route to a Williams College reunion. As Garfield fell to the ground, Guiteau
exclaimed, I am a Stalwart and Arthur is president now! (Guiteau was later convicted of Garfield s
murder and executed by hanging in 1882.) (History.com staff NP), This shows that Garfield was shot
by someone who did not like his ideas and actions. He should not have been shot because of his ideas

An Brief Introduction Of Arduino
An brief introduction of Arduino
1. History of Arduino
Arduino, a relatively new prototyping platform, has gained great popularity all over the world in less
than a decade, over 700,000 official boards had been manufactured by 2013 [1], not to mention the
amount of unofficial clone boards which is very likely to surpass the official ones [2]. In this paper,
the basic concepts about Arduino, the underlying principles are shown briefly, also the reasons that it s
so prevalent among both industrial and individual user groups, as well as some of the common
applications of it.
It s in 2002 that Banzi Massimo, a software architect, was hired by IDII (Interaction Design Institute
Ivrea, a graduate school based in Ivrea, Italy) as an associate professor to promote novel means of
doing interactive design, which is also referred as physical computing. But with limited class time and
reduced budget Banzi can t do much, like others he had to rely on a microcontroller called BASIC
Stamp which is developed by a California company Parrallax. Banzi found that board has inadequate
computing capability for some projects and a little bit high priced (around US$100), also it can t run
on Mac system which is widely used among IDII designers. It s since then that he started to think
about making a board himself that doesn t have these problems. Then in 2004, one of Banzi s students
Hernando Barragan developed a new prototyping platform called Wiring when writing his thesis, it

How Social Work Affects The Social Services And Viewers Essay
Social Work in the News
The article I have selected is; Baby P and Victoria Climbie tragedies synonymous with reforms to
system . The reason I have selected this article is because I found these two stories very interesting
with the fact these two names have been reported about so many times across the media with the
horrific child abuse they incurred. I also like the fact that after these two tragedies occurred there has
been many reforms to the system to ensure fewer tragedies like these can occur in the future for
example, social workers are making more frequent visits to children who may be at risk of any child
abuse. I will structure my essay with beginning to explain the complexities and rewards for social
workers then refer to the two children; baby P and Victoria on their backrounds. Afterwards, I will
analyse references and how their impact effects the social services and viewers also. Finally, I will link
all my findings together and I will discuss how my understanding of social work has changed as a
result of undertaking this essay. Throughout my assignment the aspects I will focus on are how the
media has reflected social services in these two cases of baby P and Victoria and how this effects
viewer s perspectives and the social work dilemmas and ethical issues raised by The Telegraph article.
There are many social work complexities today that social workers must deal with on a daily basis.
For example, the diversity of tasks they undertake, the diversity of

The Tax System Of The United States
Taxes are a required aid from individual incomes or business profits collected by the government that
funds certain activities and services is provided by the government for the people. Taxes in the United
States can be originated all the way back to the 1760s. The current tax system the country has is a
progressive tax. A progressive tax is a taxation system where higher incomes get taxed at higher
percentages than those with lower incomes. The tax system that has been proposed that the economy
should switch to is a flat tax. A flat tax is a system where all income would have to pay the same
percentage towards taxes regardless of how much money they make. This has been a major
controversy because of the major impacts switching the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, as income increases, households have more and more income that is not spent on basic
necessities and thus can afford to pay more taxes, unlike those with lower incomes. In other words, a
progressive tax helps the government gain revenue to support its society. As a result of people with
higher incomes paying more money to the government, access money can go to those people who can
t afford to help themselves. In addition, it helps create programs for medical services, fund public
education, housing assistance and other welfare programs. This revenue enhances the opportunities for
its lower and middle class citizens (History and Debate of Progressive Tax). Nonetheless, some
conservatives think that progressive tax is socialist wealth redistribution and state theft because of
what the access revenue is put towards. Conservatives also think that progressive tax is unacceptable
because it creates a sense of class warfare, where the poor and rich don t get along with each other
because of the large gap they have in taxes. They also believe the current progressive system hurts
wealthy business owners because they are the ones who create jobs, therefore they are vital to the
economy and shouldn t have to pay more because of their success. Many liberals still believe that the

Reflective Essay On Civil Service
My agency, the Bexar County Sheriff s Office, has Civil Service and, as such, there are certain criteria
that one must meet before I could promote. Anyone who passes a few tests and does well on some
Internal Review Boards is eligible for promotion. Therefore, since I guessed better than the person
sitting next to me did, I am making major decisions that affect dozens of people directly and possibly
hundreds indirectly. The only training I received in supervision were the classes I took to impress the
Internal Review Board. The perils of Civil Service, perhaps. Additionally, when I first made sergeant
in 2011 there was no training program for the new supervisors. Surprisingly, I rode with another
sergeant for three days and then was on my own. Expectations were that I could perform the duties
and responsibilities since I passed the test.
Then, in 2016, I made lieutenant and the only training I received was moving from the sergeant s
office across the hall to my new office.
Since then I, with another lieutenant, have put together a training program for all new sergeants.
However, on my own I learned a few things and have come up with a few of my own maxims that
many other supervisors have taken to quoting:
When in doubt, do whichever option requires more work

Essay on The Impact that Lenin had on Russia and the...
The Impact that Lenin had on Russia and the Russian People
Russia was an enormous empire and had over 55,650,000 Russians in it. The leader of Russia from
1905 to 1917 was Tsar Nicholas II (emperor) who was ruler of Russia. The Tsar was independent and
had autocratic power, which meant that he shared his power with no one, meaning Russia didn t have
to vote. Before the Tsar was in power the Russian army performed a war against Japan and lost
because their army was very unequipped and was made up of conscripts (people forced in the army).

The Social Democrats was another main group in Russia. The factory workers mainly supported these
people because all the existing Governments would be overthrown and all the wealth would be shared
evenly. These people wanted a complete and radical change and wanted to get rid of the Tsar.
====================================================================
In 1905 there was a revolution, which failed, once the war ended things got really bad in Russia
because mutinies were happening in the army because they had no equipment, food and training.
Strikes broke out and around 250,000 people went on strike because the peasants didn t get land, the
soldiers wanted to lead there normal lives again and get a job, also Social Revolutionaries wanted a
Duma which was a parliament. So the Tsar set up a Duma but didn t really listen to their suggestions
and if somebody said anything wrong then he dismissed the whole parliament. So I don t really think
it was real democracy, but this carried on for a while so the Tsar survived the attempt of a revolution,
which failed.
A well respected man called Lenin went to a meeting in London and had strict ideas on a complete

Newell Company Case Study
Newell Company was established in 1902 by Edgar A. Newell after he purchased a brass curtain rods
manufacturer. From brass curtain rods, Newell then became a manufacturer for both home and
hardware products (Montgomery, 2005). Over time, the organization developed a two pronged
approach to strategy. The two approaches included; following an established acquisition process
(Newellization) and progression over the company s multiple divisions. Newellization can be
described as the process the acquired company goes through in order to be faster and more efficient
while also incorporating the items into their current product line. Through the years, instead of

Rubbermaid
By 1998, Newell was considering a merger with Rubbermaid Incorporated to form a new company,
Newell Rubbermaid Incorporated. The purchase was a tax free exchange of 0.7883 shares of Newell
stock for each share of Rubbermaid (Montgomery, 2005, p. 12). Prior to the acquisition of
Rubbermaid, Newell had three major product groupings: Hardware and Home Furnishings, Office
Products, and Housewares (Montgomery, 2005). Adding Rubbermaid to Newell s product line would
allow them the opportunity to sell a wide range of products which would now include plastic products,
ranging from housewares to toys. McDonough expected, Newell to be able to apply its established
process of acquiring, streamlining, and managing smaller companies to this large one (Montgomery,
2005, p. 12). However, an unexpected change in the market occurred on the day of the acquisition.
Newell s closing price on Tuesday before the deal was $49.063, valuing Rubbermaid s shares at 49%
over its closing price of $25.875 (Montgomery, 2005). Immediately after the deal, Newell s shares fell
to $43.875 while Rubbermaid s shares

  • 2. The Disastrous Effects Of Evil In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of... Evil s Disastrous Effects Bell defines evil as human actions or inactions that harm other people. I would add to that qualification without justification or excuse (Leong, 2004, para. 1). This quote provides an accurate description of what evil generally is; it is not just an action, it can also be a lack of action. However, evil is also, in most cases, what causes the aforementioned action or lack there of. Additionally, evil is unjustifiable in any way. In fact, anyone who seeks to justify evil has likely been consumed by evil themselves. That is one of the greatest dangers of evil; it has the ability to infect, and sometimes even corrupt, the most noble men. Evil exists throughout the world, and it can have disastrous effects on mankind; it defiles morals, leads to wicked actions, and turns men into animals. Evil Defiles Morality Evil has the ability to defile and corrupt the morals of even the most noble hearted men. There is nothing more efficient at corrupting sound morality than pure evil. I said I could see that very well, but what I wanted was a certain quantity of rivets and rivets were really what Mr. Kurtz wanted (Conrad, 1990, p. 44). In this quote from Heart of Darkness, the protagonist, Marlow, chooses to lie in order to get what he wants despite his previous words about lying, You know I hate, detest, and can t bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but simply because it appeals me (Conrad, 1990, p. 42). • 4. Metamorphosis Kafka Analysis The title of the story The Metamorphosis , by Franz Kafka is misleading. Merriam Webster defines metamorphosis as the change of physical form, structure or substance, especially by supernatural means, a striking alteration in appearance, character or circumstance . While there is an obvious change in the appearance of the character Gregor Samsa, it becomes apparent after reading the story, that his appearance is not the only thing that transforms. In the story, Gregor wakes up one morning to realize that he has changed into a giant insect. Not only did he transform into a creature, but he was also stripped of his humanity. The author Franz Kafka uses this symbolism to focus the reader s attention on one character that mirrors himself and his life. Both Kafka and Gregor are traveling salesman from Prague, experience dysfunctional personal relationships throughout their life and suffer from psychological conditions including alienation and isolation. Franz Kafka s life, a heartbreaking story of human conflict, parallels with the main character of metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa. Franz Kafka was born into a middle class German speaking Jewish family from Prague, Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. Although Kafka obtained a degree in law, he spent his short adult life working as a traveling insurance salesman. He considered this job as a bread job , a job performed to only pay bills. At the time Kafka wrote Metamorphosis he had been employed for four years. In parallel, Kafka s main character in the Metamorphosis possessed a job as a traveling salesman for four years to pay off the family debt and support them. He is dissatisfied with his job, which is noted when he says O God, he thought, what a demanding job I ve chosen, day in, day out on the road... (Kafka p.612). I have to deal with the problems of traveling, the worries about train connections, irregular bad food, temporary and constantly changing human relationships, which never came from the hear, To hell with it all! (Kafka p.612). The metamorphosis of Gregor liberates him from his dreaded job, as well as, releases him from his financial obligation to his parents. Kafka s writings are significantly influenced by his conflicted relationships with both his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Asthma Case Study Essay This paper will review a case study of a 30 year old patient who has been diagnosed with asthma and allergies. The patient was put on the medications; albuterol, (Proventil), salmeterol (Sere vent), and montelukast (Singular). The patient s provider told the patient to come back in two weeks for follow up. If at that time she is still wheezing, he would put her on an oral corticosteroid (Kelleher, Sheryl MS, CFNP, Class Assignment). This paper will define what asthma and its pathophysiology is, as well as review the patients prescribed medications of albuterol, salmeterol, and montelukast. Lastly, a review of corticosteroids and their adverse effects, dosing, and other implications will be discussed. Asthma can be defined as a chronic pulmonary disease that involves inflammation and bronchospasms. To fully understand asthma and its attributes, one must understand the pathophysiology of asthma, including the lower respiratory tract, and the bronchiolar smooth muscle. Stated simply, the major role of the respiratory system is to bring oxygen into the human body, and remove carbon dioxide (Adams, Holland, Urban,). This is nonetheless respiration, or the exchange of gases. Another phenomenon occurring in our respiratory system is ventilation. This is when the air moves in and out of the lungs. Bronchiolar smooth muscle is located in the Bronchiole and plays a very important role in the physiology as well. They either contract or relax. Relaxation of the bronchiole smooth ... • 7. Essay on General George Washington and The Continental Army The American Revolution was a great time of change for America as a nation. With this change new heroes and ideals of life, liberty, and freedom were formed. Spearheading these new ideals was General George Washington and his continental army, but the road ahead of Washington and his men was not an unproblematic one. The winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania proved this to Washington and his men. Yet the true American ideal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were never forgotten in their battle. General George Washington gained command of the continental army in July 3, 1775 from the directions of General Artemus Ward who said, The Continental Congress having now taken all the Troops of the several Colonies, which have been ... Soldiers were treated to the worst conditions possible at Valley Forge. Many were near naked and many were starving to death. Also dieses such as Dysentery and Typhus ran rampant at Valley Forge. These conditions alone accounted for the lives of hundreds of American soldiers that winter. Yet in early spring at Valley Forge General Nathanel Greene was appointed quartermaster. Conditions for the members of the continental army greatly improved. Food was in abundance as well as clothing and soldiers took full advantage of it. While the American soldiers were very valiant, they lacked the discipline and skills of a true army. This soon changed will the arrival of Baron Von Stueben. Von Stueben quickly turned the continental army into a true army. Leaving Valley Forge Washington and his men had a renewed sense of patriotism. They were now a united army with the skills to defeat the British although they had suffered great losses they had made great achievements and were now truly an army. The winter of Valley Forge exemplified the true will of General George Washington and his troops. The colour filled skies and the warm breeze persuaded her to take the long way home. Walking through the empty, lifeless streets. With every small step she took she smiled. Everything was falling in to place. Her life was back on track, she found him. The man of her dreams. The person to make her feel alive, to show her she hadn t been living. Smiling as she walked further and further down the motionless streets. But little did she know that he was there. Waiting, watching, following her every move. Hiding in the shadows, waiting for his chance to strike. He followed her step by step, his breathing increasing as he got closer. She was completely oblivious, so happy that she was left vulnerable. He inched closer and closer, his heart pounding louder with every waft of her scent. His adrenaline growing at the thought of the unthinkable act he was going to commit. He gripped her from behind with one arm tightly wrapped around her petite waist, placing his large free hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Her once so pretty eyes, wide in disbelief as he dragged her struggling body in to the darkness of the shadows. Stabbing her with a large needle to stop her from fleeing, he then violently threw her to the hard cold ground. He moved over her and she clamped her eyes shut. • 11. Why Are Stereotypes Dangerous and What Can Be Done to... Why Are Stereotypes Dangerous and What Can Be Done to Reduce Them? Very often, in our everyday life, we tend to make certain generalizations about things and people around us. This is because we are constantly exposed to heaps of information, and in order to cope with the complexity of the world around us, we need to generalize and categorize.[1] Sometimes we do this on purpose, with some intention. However, very often we do this subconsciously, unaware of what we are doing. Many people generalize on others according to their clothes, profession, origin, way of speaking, and many other, outer markers. This sort of thinking could be very dangerous, and it can lead us to creating stereotypes. Stereotype is a term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prove this to be true, some of my colleagues and me had some people from our environment interviewed on this topic. It is interesting that most of them had similar answers, and almost everyone said the English were reserved, snobbish, and even evil. Americans were fat and stupid, self centered. Although none of them would admit to be stereotyping, they all somehow knew this was true. Many of them, when asked if they would ever live in these countries responded negativelly, because the people were bad. Thus they had some prejudices formed against these people, and did not want to do anything to help them understand and appreciate the other culture. Discrimination When the stereotypes we have formed last for too long in our minds, they can grow and develop into something more serious than prejudice. This is when we start acting and treating other people in a different, often bad and inhumane way.[7] This is another possible danger of using stereotypes, which is called discrimination. There are many different types of discrimination, based on appearance, age, nationality, sex, etc. One of the most common forms of discrimination is based on a well known stereotype found in many movies, magazines, and even in cartoons. It is the stereotype of a dumb blonde. [8] It is an image of a girl who is physically attractive, but lacks brains. This stereotype is so powerful, that very often all blonde girls ... HIIT has become a widely known form of training that consists of alternating rest and work periods. During the work period, the individual uses about 80 to 95% of their maximum heart rate, whereas the rest period is about 40 to 50% of the person s maximal heart rate (American College of Sports Medicine, 2014). According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), HIIT has become popular because an exercise program can be easily developed and tailored towards individuals of any fitness level and there are many benefits. Previous studies have shown evidence and benefits for men, but there is not much data available for women (Smith Ryan, Trexler, Wingfield, Blue, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of HIIT among overweight to obese women. • 17. Midwifery Care Shortage Essay Introduction There is a predicted midwifery workforce shortage (The Department of Health, 2013). To address this, the Australian Government has been implementing measures to support midwives to work to their full scope of practice including increasing midwifery care in community settings (Department of Health and Ageing, 2010). This research proposal aims to understand and interpret metropolitan hospital based lived experience of providing extramural midwifery care after hospital based midwifery experience. From this understanding any issues that impact negatively on midwives may be identified and the risk mitigated. Contextual review The majority of maternity care is provided within a hospital setting and within a medical model (Owens, et al., 2016). The Australian Government policy is to increase women s access to midwifery care within their local community (Department of Health and Ageing, 2010) however the majority of publically employed metropolitan midwives are siloed into discrete areas of practice (antenatal, birthing, postnatal care and home visiting). Providing care outside of a hospital setting is new to many metropolitan Australian midwives. In my opinion Steinbeck drew the subject matter from his own experience of working on ranches, he was interested in special kinds of relationships among men working on ... However, the world is too cruel to sustain such relationships. Lennie and George came closest to this ideal friendship, but they are forced to separate tragically. With this, a rare friendship vanishes, but the rest of the world represented by Curley and Carlson, who watch George leaving his friend s dead body fails to acknowledge it. The last theme is the impossibility of dreams. Most of the characters dream of a Motifs, which are repeated in the novel, are loneliness, friendship, strength and weakness. Men like George who migrate from farm to farm are often alone. As the story develops, Candy, Crooks, and Curley s wife all confess their deep loneliness. Each of these characters searches for a friend, someone to help them measure the world, as Crooks says. For George, the hope of such friendship dies with Lennie. Steinbeck explores different types of strength and weakness throughout the novel. The first, and most obvious, is physical strength. As the novel opens, Steinbeck shows how Lennie possesses physical strength beyond his control, when he cannot help killing mice. Physical strength is very important for men like George and Lennie. • 19. Analysis Of Hoop Dreams By Steve James Hoop Dreams was a documentary made in 1994, directed by Steve James. The film follows two boys named Arthur and William from eight to twelfth grade as they chase their dream of becoming professional basketball players. They both go to Saint Joseph s High School, the prestige suburban school famous for their basketball team. But when Arthur has to go to a regular public high school because of economic issues, the film becomes a documentation of both the boys, with the help of their families, battling the physical and social obstacles that are blocking their path. One of the most subtle methods of manipulation used in Hoop Dreams was the music in scenes that they wanted to resonate with you. For example, when Arthur is at Saint Joseph s at basketball practice, his basketball hero, Isiah Thomas, shows up to give a speech. There is a slow motion shot of Isiah playing with Arthur on the court, who has a huge smile on his face, and in the background there is what you could call inspirational music. This was used most likely to show how much Arthur idolized Isiah, therefore, showing how badly Arthur wanted to play basketball. It gives the audience hope that Arthur will make his dream a reality, which will make it that much more exciting when he eventually does. In an interview with Arthur s mother, you find out that St. Joseph s wouldn t pay for all of Arthur s education like they said they would, which is terrible news because the Agee s couldn t afford to send Arthur to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With regards to continuous restructuring of the company. This issue is a big factor that even stimulates the first problem. With the re evaluation of the organizational structure the employees tend to lose confidence and trust in those in charge and therefore their performance is hindered because of this. Concerning the hiring skills of the company it is very inefficient such as recruiting college kids, newspaper advertisements, employment agencies and job notices on job search websites. These hiring skills are very costly and time consuming. The high expectations of management to meet high quotas is unreasonable and thus puts pressure on the salesmen causing them to perform unethical actions such as posting incorrect sales figures just to please their managers. Options that can assist the firm in these issues are by management evaluating the company and making a consistent and permanent organizational structure. To make the hiring process more efficient it needs to be shorter in length, be specific in the characteristics of the potential employee to avoid the many steps and narrow the amount of hiring methods to reduce costs. Not stretching quotas is another factor that needs to be considered by management. This can be done through lowering their expectations of sales in the same time frame that currently exists making them realistic, give incentives if they need to be stretched, employ feedback from sales persons so as to assign comfortable quotas around each ... • 22. Descriptive Essay On Beauty I had to decorate my head with flowers and was looking exquisite. My father had prohibited me from using scented perfumes. I also did not have slightest of interest in that. I have been brought up in nature. Where does beauty live? Is it in jewelry or clothes, in the body, in soul or in the eye of the beholder? I was wondering. Four chariots named Rug, Yarju, Sam and Atharva were constructed. The great father Brahma sat on Rug. Twayi and Anwikshika were sitting in Yarju. Varta and Niti were in Atharva. Yarju was decorated with beautiful flowers. A drape of flowers covered the front of the chariot. The fourth chariot Atharva was appearing like a bouquet of red flowers. I sat in the chariot Sam, which was decorated with vines and fragrant flowers. In front of me, a garland of white jasmine was hanging. I was bathing with the fragrance of the flowers. My whole body, my mind, and my soul were all filled with fragrance. No one could see me from outside the chariot. But, I could see through the vines and thorns. I did not know the logic behind bringing me to heaven like a prisoner. I was sitting with suppressed curiosity, but was enjoying the scenery of the Indraloka. Even though heaven s beauty amazed me, my mind was thinking about my motherland, the earth. My playground, the elegant forest on the foothills of the Himalayas was no way less beautiful. I could never accept that my unique mother land is less prosperous than the kingdom of Indraloka. After attending godhood, it was natural to become a lover of luxury. Hence, the kingdom of gods was so much a show off. If my motherland was a selfless hermit, the heaven was a hedonist beauty. If the Indraloka was so attractive, then how attractive Indra would be? After the discussion, I was supposed to come out of the chariot as if for a display. That time I could see without any hindrance and Indradeva could also see me. I remembered my first encounter with Indra. He was visiting my father in the ashram. His chariot was in the garden and I sat in it pretending to navigate it. As soon as I saw him returning to the chariot, I got scared. I slipped and fell while descending from the chariot and twisted my feet. I did not cry. Indradeva was already there. Before he ... Does the feel of dough between your fingers remind you of being in the kitchen with Grama? Does the color combination of red and purple stir familiar feelings inside you? Perhaps the spring sun on your skin gathers memories of backyard games with neighborhood friends. Most of our powerful memories associate an experience with a sense. These sense based reactions then become triggers for recall. Sensory experiences and, therefore, sensory play, are valuable in the development of our children. Engaging the senses promotes learning and retention. Touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste allow humans to explore the world. With each interaction, we take in more valuable information, even unconsciously. Experience is our teacher. Solving problems and participating in make believe comes with exploring the world through play. These activities express creativity and build confidence. Furthermore, sensory play develops and refines the senses. This valuable childhood activity proves therapeutic, improves motor skills, increases awareness of the world and promotes language acquisition. This is a lesson that us as a society can learn and practice; it warns of the dangers of extremism in all aspects. Moderation is an important balance in the context of our everyday lives because our desires cannot trump our ability to make positive decisions. If we base our decisions on current events, the effects may come back to harm us in the end. In Sophocles tragedy, Antigone audiences are shown the consequences of going against the lessons of moderation and the ways in which characters let their desires overcome their decision making. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non profit organization, sport team, etc. This whole can make reference to a discourse community. Literature Review In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the level of expertise each member has. With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as different from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities recruits its [members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share similar linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a common goal. They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the utilization of genres like a discourse community does. Moreover, it is established that genres are how things get done, when language is used to accomplish them (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some key elements are grit, a support system and commitment. Grit is having the strength to never give up when things get tough, no matter how tough situations get. Commitment is keeping up with something and sticking with it every step of the way until the job is done. Kewauna, from Kewauna s Ambition , a portion from How Children Succeed , written by Paul Tough, showed those three elements: grit by never giving up, having a support system that included a tutor, family and classmates, and determination while she tried her hardest to do her best every day while attempting to escape her former lifestyle and being enrolled in a program. Napoleon was very narcissistic and cruel, and did not value human life. At the same time, he believed in education and instruction. Also, he positively influenced the schools and created the Napoleonic Code, which solved a lot of France s problems. Napoleon Bonaparte had a negative impact on France, because he mistreated the rights that every human should obtain, created a bad image for other countries, and only really cared about absolute power. Napoleon was born in Corsica, Italy and was entered directly into the Military, at age ten. Napoleon s leadership, and role as emperor, was heavily based around the fact that all of his childhood was being trained in the military! The Relationship Between Mother and Daughter in James Cain s Mildred Pierce I have always been of the belief that in order to truly love, hate must exist within the core of the relationship. Nowhere in modern fiction is this dictum examined more accurately than in the novel by James Cain, Mildred Pierce. Looking at the concept in a familial context, James Cain has created two well developed characters, Mildred Pierce and her daughter, Veda, that not only emphasizes the nature of mother daughter relationships, but looks at how love and hate permeates the very essence of the relationship. Yet, if we look closely at the relationship between these two, the relationship seems to be a reversal of this theory; it is the mother, not the daughter that can t imagine separation. In certain sections in the novel, Veda is the mother and Mildred is the helpless, unproven daughter. Cain ends several chapters with the mother, Mildred, exclaiming to the daughter, Veda, ...Every good thing that happens is on account of you, if Mother only had sense enough to know it (Cain 88). These proclamations only further advance the capitulation of the tenuous strings of control Mildred employs over Veda. Because females are more often trained to pay attention to inner feelings and emotional relationships, it is usually the daughter... who feels responsible for the mother (Phillips 107). But Veda is not the typical daughter, for Veda, the relationship she shares with Mildred is secondary to her own personal agenda to ascend to the class of the elite. In part, tensions arise because patriarchal propaganda creates ambivalence in daughter about the value of their relationship with their mothers. In order to consolidate this alliance, Maoist leaders declared that a revolutionary committee was necessary and the only way to reorganize the political power (Meisner, 331). If you look at yourself and all things you love about yourself you will realize that all of these qualities do not come from not you , they are more of external loves that only exist in relation to you . For example, one may love mango smoothies yet there are not you until you drink it and it is digested into your body but then you don t have it, and that s not when you love it. One may love watching movies or going for hikes, an external love of your experience of the world. It is humans that feed resistance with our fear in the same way we attach labels of good/bad or evil to objects. Moving forward with this concept, it is the human consciousness that creates good and bad. This is seen in the common representation of consciousness with an angel and devil sitting on one s shoulders influencing the thoughts and decisions at hand. Every action a being makes is rationalized. A hawk may swoop down and kill the chipmunk for survival. This is just as a normal of a happening as a dog drinking water from his or her drinking bowl. When human consciousness applies the meaning of good and evil, Satan and God are present in these happenings depending upon which perspective.
