Essay about The Lovely Bones Movie vs Book
Peter Jackson s 2009 film, The Lovely Bones, is based off of the New York Times bestseller novel
written by Alice Sebold. Both the book and the movie adaptation tell the story of a young, 14 year old
girl named Susie Salmon who is brutally murdered by her neighbor. In both versions, Susie narrates
her story from the place between Heaven and Earth, the in between, showing the lives of her family
and friends and how each of their lives have changed since her murder. However, the film adaptation
and the original novel differ in the sense of the main character focalization throughout, the graphic
explanatory to visual extent, and the relationship between the mother and father. Throughout Jackson s
film adaptation, the primary character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel, the murder and rape of Susie Salmon is intensively described, ...cut into pieces... blood
soaked into the soft, wet earth... leaving no question in the reader s mind as to what was happening or
might have happened (Novel, Chapters 2 3). While in the movie version of the book, the murder and
rape scene is not showed at all, only having to be assumed by showing Mr. Harvey, the murderer,
bathing with his entire bathroom covered in blood. Also, the movie doesn t mention rape at all, only
that Susie was murdered, while the book is specific in saying that she was first raped, and then
murdered (Movie). Towards the end of the movie, Susie enters the body of Ruth Connors, Ray s best
girl friend and a medium to the spirit world, while her and Ray are visiting the sink hole in their
neighborhood, and kisses Ray (Movie). In the novel, Susie actually has sex with Ray when she enters
the body of Ruth, with all details being explained explicitly. The relationship between Susie s mother
and father throughout the film adaptation of the novel was complicated, but not as complicated as the
actual novel. In the novel, after Susie s death, the fighting between the mother, Abigail, and the father,
Jack, becomes excessive and repetitive eventually leading to Abigail having an affair with the
detective of her daughter s murder case. She eventually leaves her home and family and moves to
work in a Californian winery

Summary Of Three Girls By Oates
It was like a child s game in which you stare at foliage, grass, clouds in the sky, and suddenly you see
a face or a figure, and after that recognition you can t not see the hidden shape, its staring you in the
face. (Oates, 95)
Oates Three Girls tells the story of two girl poets in the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan on a snowy
day in March of 1956. They wander through the aisles of poetry, with commentary about various poets
and collections of poetries and how they reflected on the girl poets . We were girl poets passionately
enamored of T.S. Eliot but scornful of Robert Frost, whom we d been made to memorize in high
school Slyly we communicated in code phrases from Eliot in the presence of obtuse others in our
dining hall and residence. (Oates, 92) Suddenly she is pulled from her thoughts, as her friend touches
her wrist and guides her further into the store to stumble upon Marilyn Monroe. From here, the girl
poets follow her discretely, with a commentary of how Monroe s discretion was so much different
form how she was normally seen. She was, at that moment, not a garnish blond showgirl , but rather
this woman was an individual wholly absorbed in selecting, leafing through, pausing to read books
(Oates, 93) They continue to follow her until she reaches the storefront, where they volunteer to pay
for her books to keep the secret of her being here. From there they return her books to her outside,
with her gifting them the Selected Poems of Marianne Moore before departing. The story closes with
the two girl poets sharing their first kiss.
The chosen quote, ( It was like a child s game in which you stare at foliage, grass, clouds in the sky,
and suddenly you see a face or a figure, and after that recognition you can t not see the hidden shape,
its staring you in the face. (Oates, 95)) plays not only to the main plot of the story (the girl poets
discovering Marilyn Monroe in the Strand Bookstore), but also to the subplot (the girl poets sharing
their first kiss and becoming lovers) as well. It applies to the main plot very clearly through two sides:
that though by this point in the story only the girl poets have discovered it is Monroe, the realization
that others could at moment s

Pan Europa s Main Issues
II. Issue Identification Pan Europa s main issues can be divided into three parts, the first and most
important being their financial struggle. Due to a recent price war, Pan Europa s profitability has
suffered greatly. Their debt equity ratio of 1.25 and price to earnings ratio of 8 times has resulted in a
below average stock price. Currently, their stock is being traded below book value and well below its
competition. This can have a disastrous effect on the company as many major security brokers are
labeling the stock as uncertain and issuing sell recommendations to investors. This can result in the
rapid sale of equity that would deflate Pan Europa s value even further. Such an event also opens the
door for a hostile takeover, as a third party can quickly acquire a large portion of equity. A high debt
equity ratio and historically high debt financing initiatives increases potential for financial distress,
and possibly bankruptcy, if they cannot recover sufficient funds to cover their cost of debt The second
issue faced by Pan Europa has to do with their external environment. Low population growth in
northern Europe coupled with increasingly saturated markets has resulted in stagnant sales. As
competition intensifies, Pan Europa is forced to make risky decisions, such as the provocation of a
price war mentioned above. Although they may cause smaller, weaker firms to exit the market in the
short term, these rash decisions have impacted Pan Europa s bottom line.

Give All For All Analysis
For the reflection, I chose service among many different spiritual practices in this book. The reason
why I chose it was because I have been interested in serving others in a right way. The selection of
Hadewijch Give all for all helped me understand what God expects me to do for others. However,
Richard Foster mentions at the end of the selection that it was not easy to admit the truth that the
author discussed. On my first time of reading, I also had similar feeling like this. It s because my acts
of service for others seem no longer commendable in the sight of God according to his writing. As I
read it over and over to fully understand its meaning, I realized that my services that I have done for
others may be not satisfying or pleasing God.
Through this reading, I looked back my ministry that I have done for others in the past. I thought I
could be proud of myself at least in this area, service. Regularly, I visit a nursing home to see an old
lady who now became my friend. I pick up a widow s three children once a week, feed them, help
them finish their home works and take them to the church program. I sometimes watch a ... Show

However, as I continue to serve people, all these actions of kindness are becoming a routine in my life.
I was not able to get out of this routine. In another words, I was not willing to do anything extra
because I have been satisfied of myself and my service for others. I probably said to my heart, This is
enough for this week or this month. In my mind, I probably hoped that someone would notice and
commend my good works. I also have judged others faith if they neglected spending time and energy
to help others in the name of Jesus. I was shameful to find a Pharisee inside of me. My action itself
became a tool to wrap myself well as a good Christian and to judge others. I expected God to give
more blessings to me than others because of my good

The Three Categories Of Civil Peace
With every object that people have and every experience that people go though, they can be
categorized into three categories: needs, wants, and negatives. Wants and needs, the two positive
categories, are prioritized differently by everyone. People often misinterpret some parts of these
categories, believing certain wants are needs and vice versa. For example, some people see makeup as
a need to go outside, it is really just a want. This is how addictions form. When people categorize a
want as need, however subconsciously, they end up truly needing that, whether it be drugs, alcohol, or
even sugar. On the other hand, when people prioritize their wants, they often will be happier in life,
even though they are in worse situations than many of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in Golden Touch, King Midas realizes Gold is not everything... And I have lost all that
my heart really cared for, (Golden Touch 452). He comes upon this realization by putting his wants
over his needs, and realizes that that can be harmful. In this story, he changes to prioritize his needs
foremost after going through the trauma of almost losing his daughter. Additionally, in Warriors Don t
Cry, Melba s family feared for her safety, but they also felt that the push for integration was a god
given mission, (Melba 3). Melba was already experiencing bullying, and this would increase that, but
they felt that they needed to integrate Melba. After the suffering that she endured from other students,
people realized that skin color does not matter. Moreover, Civil Peace s Jonathan, after getting robbed
by thieves, questions, What is egg rasher? Did I depend on it last week? Or is it greater than other
things that went with the war? I say let egg rasher perish in the flames! (Civil Peace 394). He feels that
he is okay with the Ex Gratia(egg rasher) going away because he does depend on it. Even though he
underwent bad things because of it, he was prioritizing his needs above his wants. When people
prioritize necessities over what they want, they often go through bad situations, but are more content

Evaluation Of A Universal Design For Learning
When it comes to education, it is important to determine what method of content delivery is going to
be the most effective for each individual class. Furthermore, it becomes increasingly important to
determine the most effective strategies for each individual student. Within the concept of a universal
design for learning (UDL), it becomes important to ensure that students have more than just access to
information: Non educators often make the mistake of equating access to information with access to
learning (Rose Meyer 2002). With UDL, students not only have access to information, but they are
enable through the access to learning. This can be manifested in a number of ways, but is
characterized by the availability of environments that promote learning and education that promotes
learning. UDL then becomes the method for which educators provide students with a variety of
methods to engage cognition, and allow for educators to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners by Implementing UDL Developing a curriculum is a difficult
process, moreso when an educator has to keep in mind the number of students they are trying to reach.
At the secondary level, it is not uncommon for a teacher to be responsible for 150 or more students.
Each of these students presents a unique and trying task for educators who want to help students learn.
Students have different modalities for which they gain knowledge, and it is the teacher s job to engage

Treating Arthritis
Arthritis is the general term for the group of conditions that damage the joints and result in pain and
stiffness in one or more of the body s joints. The most common forms are Osteoarthritis (brittle
cartilage), Rheumatoid Arthritis (where the body s immune system attacks the joints), Gout (Created
by a build up of Uric Acid) and Ankylosing Spondylitis (Pain and stiffness in the lower part of the
spine). There are many methods for treating arthritis which may include Exercise Physiology,
Phisiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Chiropractics, Acupuncture, Osteopathy, Naturopathy, Exercise
and Medication. A growing number of Arthritis sufferers are turning to natural vitamin supplements as
a preferred treatment method. Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Omega 3 Fish Oil all have substantial
evidence to show their benefit in the treatment of Arthritis. MSM, Curcumin and Ginger also have
minimal substantiated evidence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Way Of The Ways
The Way to The Ways I Modi the ways, the modes, the positions, the postures with such a simple
name, I was surprised to realize that somehow this work had never crossed my path in all these years
of studying the history of art. Even an advanced course focusing on fetishism, in art that is, failed to
reveal to me the frankness of these drawings, while exposing me to similar subjects in arts ranging
from the primitive, as produced by the first peoples of the Earth, to contemporary photography. These
drawings were produced by Giulio Romano, a student of Raphael, in the early 1520s and subsequently
engraved and printed by Marcantonio Raimondi. They form a series of sixteen images depicting a
variety of sexual positions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Let us trace the way to I Modi. While one could begin this story with a look all the way back to so
called primitive art which often reflected an interest in human sexuality, if only based on concerns
about fertility it may be more appropriate to begin with a culture whose traditions have been clearly
identified as having found their way into the ancient Roman psyche. That is, the culture of ancient
Egypt. An example of this interest in human sexuality, and an expression of it in art, is Min, the
Egyptian god of male fertility. Representing masculine virility, Min was usually portrayed with an
erect penis, which he typically grasped in his left hand. As the ancient Romans were connected to
certain areas of what is now known as Egypt, and as it has been shown that they adopted the worship
of the Egyptian goddess Isis sometime in the first century BC, it may be reasonable to assume that
they were familiar with such gods as Min, and may have even discovered some of these
aforementioned depictions. As one continues to trace the history of sexuality and the erotic image
leading up to the production of Giulio Romano s I Modi, a logical stop along the journey would be
ancient Greece. As time and space limit the scope of this analysis, direct examples from the art and
culture of this region will not be examined. However, the contribution of the Greeks to the art,

Punishment Philosophies In The Criminal Justice System
Philosophies is a definitions of punishment and there are five punishment philosophies that used in the
criminal justice system, retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation and incapacitation that include isolation.
These purpose of these goals are to prevent criminal offenses from committing crimes according to
(Meyer, 2003)
The concept of retribution is generated if someone commit a crime that very bad and people are afraid
to speak out because of fear of retribution. The retributive theory is punishing the offender by taking
away their advantage that they might have gained from their criminal or illegal actions. Due to this
theory offenders deserve to be punished for the wrongful acts they have committed. (Meyer, 2003)
Deterrence is the theory individuals make rational choices when they choose to commit ... Show more

It is one of the main goals or philosophies of corrections. It would help develop occupational skills

Incapacitation is usually placed in two approaches collective incapacitation where all people receive
the sentence or selective incapacitation where individualized sentences based on criminal activity of
the offender crime. With this theory removing violent offender from society by imprisonment with any
kind of physically restrain from victimizing others. For the most part the best way to prevent crimes is
to isolated offender from committing further crimes against the population or other prisoner.
Sanctions are also a form of punishment philosophy and impact the criminal justice system. Sanction
must be defined by coded and law in order for a judge or sentencing agent to be able to enforce it .this

Theseus and the Minotaur Once upon a time there was a great king, king Minos. The king attacked
polis quite frequently since when ever he had nothing to do he would go off and attack someone, but
often it was Athens who he attacked. One day he was feeling like he needed to fight a polis such as
Athens. So he got all his ships ready to from Crete to Athens. Athens did not like it when king Minos

The Book of Amos
INTRODUCTION
The Book of Amos is a point of departure for social criticism in the Old Testament. It presents a
remarkably comprehensive (one might even say holistic) prophetic view of both corporate and
individual moral, religious and political responsibilities that are incumbent upon man in covenantal
relationship with God, and the devastating effects for the Chosen People of God, as well as the
nations, for failure to observe them. This paper reflects on the essentials of the social message of God
through Amos, and how those essentials of Amos can properly aim us in the right directions for
relationship between God and man, between nations, and between men.
THE PROPHET, HIS CONTEXT, AND HIS TARGET AUDIENCE
The prophetic figure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frankly, that does not surprise me. It seems far more likely that a well heeled non professional prophet
with a radical social and moral message would command much greater attention and circulation than a
radical peasant.
All principal trade routes from Syria and Mesopotamia to Egypt and the Red Sea passed through
Israel. In commerce with his cattle and fruit, Amos likely would have regularly traveled to and been
very familiar with the major commercial markets of the day in the north, and would have witnessed
commercial caravans and been involved in business practices with northern Israelites and foreigners.
He would have seen slave trafficking, debt slave practices and business fraud first hand. On his
commercial travels he would have had a front row seat for seeing the disparity between the very poor
peasants and the merchants with great wealth.
The prophecies of Amos represent a radical shift in outlook from most of the works and focal points of
the Torah and previous prophets. There had previously been a prevalent sense that the fate and destiny
of the nation depended on the transgression of idolatry and vigilance in formal worship. Amos
develops a new theology of justice. However the author or authors of Amos received their
understanding and prophetic sense, the Book of Amos places not only extreme importance on personal

Health Care And Family Dynamics
In the modern and ever changing world improvements in life quality, healthcare, and technology have
enhanced and extended life. Although in many ways, this has been a good thing, it has also created a
number of issues that prior generations did not face. In addition to changes which are enhancing and
extending life, younger family members are becoming more regional and less local. Children are
moving away for college and to take on jobs to move forward with their own lives at a much larger
scale than years prior. These factors bring on a whole new set of issues in regards to elder care and
family dynamics than ever before. One of the most common issues faced occurs when the wishes of
an elderly adult is in contrast to opinion of family members, caregivers, or health care providers.
Different ideas about what is best in terms of living accommodations, healthcare decisions, and
general care are only a few of life decisions that plague families . This can be especially sensitive
when elderly adults are still of sound mind. There are also occasions where physical limitations,
sickness or the need for help put elderly adults in situations that are adamantly against their wishes
due to lack of support or the adverse opinion of family members. There are also changes in values
which have occurred over generations which cause disparity between younger generations and older
generations. The values of family first, and obligations to elderly family members have for various

Definition Of Funny Essay
In the quote from Mark Twain, Show me a man who knows what s funny, and I ll show you a man
who knows what s not , there is one word in particular that I would like to focus on. Funny. We all
know what funny means, something that causes you to laugh, something that s humorous. But, what
exactly falls under that definition? That s something you can t specifically decide. With so many
factors going into it, including an individual s personality, the area, the time, and more, finding
something that everyone believes to be funny would be hard.
For me specifically, the word funny brings to mind jokes I ve heard or read in my mind. More
specifically, I picture chickens crossing roads, cows interrupting conversations, and a variety of
different people and items knocking on doors. However, you may associate very different ideas with
the word. My father and sister both find it extremely hilarious to watch other people undergo harm,
while one of my best friends finds humor in making statements that have no blatantly obvious
connection with the current conversation and often don t make grammatical sense. Everyone has their
own sense of humor just as everyone has their own favorite colors, whilst some may be the same, ...

So, how did these social groups come to exist between people that conflict in such a major area of
their lives? When confronted with divergent opinions or ideas we either diminish and dismiss them or
we adapt and accept them, although the latter occurs more frequently. Simply put, humans are
extremely flexible in their behavior and quickly conform to what is prevalent around them. This is
seen in every aspect of our lives, from clothing trends to language norms and even in popular methods
of amusement. So, as seen in any social construct, when we are in different situations we adjust to fit
in. This makes it possible to for us to form bonds with those around us while retaining a personal

What Is The Six Thinking Hat
Edward De Bono is a man nominated for the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2005, and is considered as
a leading example in the area of creative thinking and innovation. He is the proud author of the six
thinking hats. His six thinking hat theory is widely used in many organizations such as IBM,
Prudential, GM, BT and Nokia. His methods are now a mandatory in schools in many countries. The
six thinking hats are white, yellow, black, and red, blue, green
The white hat is based on facts and calls on facts and nothing less. A business person or even a student
is recommended to be in the white thinking hat when dealing with something factual and
straightforward. For a person who is on a white thinking hat will only look through the facts and
figures and concludes based on that finding. For example, a business man who is looking through
figures and data on a fact sheet, will come up with a conclusion or decision based on that only and will
not compromise for any other discussion. The advantage of being on white thinking hat is that there
will be no rule breaking and everything will be a clear cut ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When on this hat, a person is allowed to express anger, dislikes and disagreements. In business this

intuition, feelings are supposed to be expressed. And there will be the presence of that. If there are any
feelings involved than it would be good to share it as it might help with a proper business planning.
The red thinking hat includes variable feelings, such as curiosity, enthusiasm, interested, or even
boring. All this feeling somehow plays a part in a discussion as someone with a red thinking hat might
find the proposal boring and that would trigger the rest of the thinking hats to get deeper into the
feelings and find a

Lack Of Diversity In Higher Education
Last week I had the privilege of joining President Obama and the first lady at a White House summit
designed to spur efforts to make sure that higher education serves as an engine of upward mobility
rather than a replicator of inequality. One hundred college presidents came with formal pledges in
hand, committing time and resources to strategies to improve access and success of disadvantaged
young adults. The three heads of California s public systems all attended, including the University of
California s new system president, former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
Just weeks on the job, Napolitano was the first participant to directly and explicitly own up to the
racial undercurrent to the discussion. UC s enrollment of low income students is impressive, but the
inadequate representation of Latino and African American students is a real problem. Seeming fully in
command of the subject matter, Napolitano lamented the ripple effect this lack of diversity will have at
all colleges because of the role UC plays in preparing the future faculty members who will serve as
mentors to the next generation of students at campuses far beyond UC. ... Show more content on

Adeline Yen Mah s Characters In Chinese Cinderella
Adeline Yen Mah had done an extraordinary job at writing Chinese Cinderella. I believe she has done
an even better job at achieving her goal. The author hints multiple reasons for writing this story. Her
dedication page was written for the children who weren t loved by their parents. In Mah s dedication
page, She says that you are not alone and to use her story to encourage yourself. This leads me to infer
that she wrote this because she wants to comfort unwanted children. However, I believe Mah had
more intentions for writing this story. It was painful and difficult for me to write this, (Preface xi).
Mah had never told anyone the truth about her family. Everyone thought Mah had a loving family
until they went to her home for a surprise party. ... Tell them to gun dan (get lost) and never come here

Comparing My Brother Sam Is Dead And Colony Of Fear
Paragraphs for Essay Why is it that in My Brother Sam is Dead and in Colony of Fear there is so
much hate between the characters? In this essay there I am going to compare and contrast two novels.
The novels are My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier and Colony
of Fear by Lucy Jane Bledsoe. The Topics to be compared and contrasted are the characters
protagonists and antagonists and the conflict. In My Brother Sam id Dead someone named Sam
Meeker wanted to go to the Revolutionary War, but he went to his house to steal his father s gun. So,
his father caught him then, Sam went to War, with desperation, he left his post he was caught and
charged to be sentenced death then, his brother Tim Meeker went to General Putman to convince him
to release Sam out of jail but he failed. In Colony of Fear, someone named Samuel Roberts wanted to
work as a shoemaker and learn from a man named Master Beacon. But, when Samuel met a girl

CLB9018 3 1.What is participant observation and how it is deployed in ethnography?Elaborate on its
advantages and disadvantages Participant Observation is a method for collecting data in qualitative
research, such as ethnography ,seeking to obtain an in depth understanding and data of the research
subjects locating in particular selected field. The hypocrisy of sustaining the objectivity during the
process of ethnographic research has been under much more suspicion nowadays. It implies a
fundamental transformation from the preceding emphasis on the objectivity, carrying out the
observation as an outsider point of view. Contrary to the outsider approach applied in the traditional
ethnography, participant observation requires the observers to engage with and immerse themselves in
the field,in which fieldwork is being carried out.The observers would establish a relationship with the
informants and the research subjects while keep contacting over a period of time. The participant
observation involves not only observation, but also natural

What Is Sleep Paralysis
SLEEP PARALYSIS RESEARCH PAPER
Sleep paralysis has a history that stretches over centuries, with a vast array of people experiencing it.
Some believe they have been visited by demons, or aliens in the night and attribute such events to
witchcraft or Satanism. There are references to folklore from every nation throughout history. The
Nightmare, is a painting by Henry Fuselli that dates to 1781, and depicts a chilling sleep paralysis
incidence. In this painting, a malicious spirit sits on a man s chest while the victim lies there limp and
unable to fight back. The cultural and spiritual implications of this phenomena is unique amongst
neurological ailments. Isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) is the inability to move or talk during the
transition between sleep and wakefulness, accompanied by auditory and visual hallucinations that are
often extremely hostile. These hallucinations can include a wicked existence in the room, an
impression of being touched, or hearing voices in the room. Some people see faces at the bedside.
This is typically accompanied by a perceived breathlessness. Patients describe the experience as
petrifying. Episodes tend to be more recurrent when sleeping in the supine position. ISP usually

Some people have entered sleep paralysis directly from lucid dreaming or entered lucid dreaming
from a state of sleep paralysis. The indications are that people who are experiencing both patterns are
also undergoing a greater dissociative experience in daily life. In lucid dreaming the dreamer is aware
that they are dreaming and is therefore able to control the dream. These dreams are characterized by
increased insight, and even access to waking memories. This dissociate experience is generally
positive and can leave the dreamer feeling blissful. These are directly inverted from the intruder and

Mitral Valve Replacement Research Paper
Mitral valve replacement is surgical replacement of the mitral valve. Many mitral valves can be
repaired, especially if they leak from wearing out. When the valve is too damaged to repair, the valve
must be replaced. Valves damaged by rheumatic disease often must be replaced. An artificial
(prosthetic) valve is used to do this. Three types of prosthetic valves are available:
Mechanical valves made entirely from man made materials.
Donor valves made from human donors. These are only used in special situations.
Biological valves made from animal tissues.

However, as with any procedure, complications can occur. Possible complications include:
Blood clotting caused by the new valve. Replacement with a mechanical valve requires lifelong
treatment with medicine to prevent blood clots.
Infection in the new valve. Infection is more common with valve replacement than with valve repair.
Valve failure. Valve failure is more common with valve replacement than with valve repair. Pig heart
valves tend to fail after about 8 to 10 years.
Effects from the surgery itself, such as bleeding, infection, and risks of anesthesia. These risks are
rare.

You may need to have blood tests, a test to check heart rhythm (electrocardiography), or
echocardiography to evaluate your heart valves and the blood flow through them.
Ask your health care provider about changing or stopping your regular medicines.
Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before the surgery. Ask your health care provider if it
is okay to take any needed medicines with a sip of water.
Do not smoke for as long as possible before the surgery. Smoking can increase the chances of a

Effects Of The Domino Theory On The Vietnam War
he Vietnam War was an extension of Cold War An Ideological conflict between Capitalism and
Communism (1965 1975)The US joined the war to stop the spreading of Communism( didn t want
Russia to gain more allies as they had in Cold War) , under the Domino effect theory (first developed
under the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower) applying this theory to South East Asia it argued that if
South Vietnam was taken by communists, then the other countries in the region such as Laos,
Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Indonesia, would follow. The United States of America s
intention to stop the domino effect in Vietnam failed as in 1975 North Vietnamese forces marched into
Saigon. However communism itself did not spread throughout the rest of South east Asia.
After World War 1 the United States of America established itself as a formidable opponent and a
world power, World War 2 confirmed the superiority of the United States military and the unstoppable
patriotism of its people, Cold War showed that the government could negotiate peacefully instead of
directly waging yet another conflict. The main problem that led to the Vietnam War and the United

The New Imperialism In The 16th Century
Imperialism
Imperialism is the total domination of the political, economical, or cultural aspects or a nation.
Imperial colonization has been occurring sense the beginning of time. An imperialistic nation would
increase its importance and power by winning an empire. Some takeovers were forced by political
rivalries. One nation might seize a territory to prevent a competitor from expanding into that region.
Some nations would expand to boost their economic value, or personal wealth. Imperialism advances

Many people who weren t pleased with their economic and political status could migrate to new
regions to find other opportunities. Others were inspired to spread the word of Christianity and sought
a new standard of living. But most importantly, Europeans were concerned with the quest for material
goods and to grow rich (textbook pg. 878).
The new imperialism :
Imperialism has developed two very different meanings in history and in time. The imperialism of the
16th century was much less rapid and dominating than that of the new imperialism of the 19th
century. Imperialism in a sense means the extension of one nation s power over other lands.
Imperialism in the 16th century was just the colonization of North and South America and the set up
of a few trading posts in Africa. In the 19th century however, imperialism grew to mean the total
domination of one area in direct rule of the mother country.
There were two different time periods where Imperialism occurred. The first wave of imperialism,
called the Old Imperialism, lasted from around 1500 1800. The New Imperialism lasted from around
1870 1914. The three main differences that we will discuss today are the differences in economics,
politics, and the motive behind all of

American Sphinx: The character of Thomas Jefferson
A book by Joseph J. Ellis.

Joseph J. Ellis, a historian who was educated at the College of William and Mary and Yale, is a Ford
Foundation Professor of History at Mount Holyoke University. He has written four books on historical
topics, centered on the time Jefferson was alive, dealing with issues and personalities Jefferson dealt
with firsthand. After authoring a book on a politician such as John Adams, Ellis seems to have felt a

This trait in Ellis s writing and teaching style is what really grabbed me and got me interested in the
book. How wise is the person who realizes that as scholarly as they may be, there may always be a
better opinion out there? Joseph has presented to me a most noble way to write. He has circumvented
my prejudice against authors who insist that their ideas and methods are the only thoughts that exist.
In terms of the presentation of information, Ellis pieced together the life and work of Jefferson
according to eras, or phases in the life of Thomas J. Starting with Philadelphia 1775 1776, Jefferson s
story begins as the prominent, educated young man entering a world of radical politicians and
commoners striving for their independence. This chapter describes how Jefferson established himself
as an excellent literary figure in the developing American insurrection by publishing a pamphlet
entitled, A summary view of the rights of British America. This document, though never officially
accepted as a plan of action was simple and emphatic, with a dramatic flair that that previewed certain
passages in the Declaration of Independence (e.g., Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the
accidental opinion of the day; but a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period, and pursued
unalterably thro every change of ministers, too plainly prove a deliberate, systematical plan of

Don Marquis s The Lesson Of The Moth
The Lesson of the Moth Jack Thurman Prof Cole Bellamy Week 2 In the poem The Lesson of The

asks why he is doing this, the moth gives an incredibly profound statement: It is better to be a part of
beauty for one instant and then cease to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty. To
me, that is almost what life should be about. If we do not have that drive to or purpose then what is the

attitude towards life is come easy, go easy, we are like human beings used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves (Marquis 185), the moth is right for the most part about humans
being too civilized, but there are the few, the proud, the ones who dare people to drop all seriousness
and go out and have fun. The people with the most money should be having the most fun, but they
seem to just be too civilized to have a good time. The moth has a real good spin on a serious issue and

Can Students Really Improve Academic Performance by...
By wearing school uniforms, students can improve the learning environment. Uniforms increase the
students belongings and school prides. School uniforms reduce undesirable behavior because they put
students in the right frame of mind to learn (Portner). Uniforms can be a useful tool in improving
children s learning skills and attitudes toward school. It increases the student achievement and level of
preparedness. School requires children to put on the uniforms in a reasonable way to improve learning
skills, discipline, and focus (Kelly). Students can consider the uniform as their school s physical
awarded icon just for going to that particular school. Although this could create the students to
discriminate the schools for which the school is better or worse, they can be proud of themselves for
being a student and be motivated every day to study.
Uniforms also make students to prepare to dress like a professional. Students who learn to dress
appropriately in school also can do so in a professional setting, such as offices (Prill et al). Uniforms
help students to learn how to dress appropriate clothes. Since they are wearing uniforms, they will get
the ideas on how the professional places want to dress. Uniform decreases the student s behavior
problem such as attendance rates and suspension rates (Brunsma and Rockquemore). Uniforms instill
discipline help students focus on their studies and eliminate pressure on parents to outfit their kids

inmates per 100 thousand citizens (Krisberg, 7). Based on the social and political structure of
democracy in the United States, it is argued that incarceration systems should follow the same roots of
equality and freedom; however, the current format demonstrates otherwise. Currently, the United
States criminal justice system faces issues of inhumane treatment due to the sheer overcrowding,
which restrict inmates from just treatment within penitentiaries. This lack of equality standards was
argued in the 2011 court case, Brown v. Plata, which California prison systems were forced to
decrease prisons overcapacity rate from 175% to 137.5% due to the overwhelming amount of inmate
mistreatment (Koehler, 3). In the decision of Brown v. Plata (2011), supreme court justice Anthony
Kennedy argued dignity should be an organizing principle in the United States justice system and
demonstrated in all correctional facilities. Anthony Kennedy, along with guest lecturer, Jonathan
Simon characterize dignity as a fundamental piece to the incarceration system, and without it, inmates

Morality Is Not The End All Be All
Morality is not the End All be All Morality is a set of principles that individuals use to distinguish
between right and wrong, good and bad actions. Being the code by which we live our lives, morality is
a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a mundane activity like
eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this question, was the turkey that
ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions and subjected to torturous
treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications. Distinguishing right action from wrong is
a crucial skill for humans to have, but is morality the only thing that truly matters about a person.
Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not. Wolf argues that morality is just one of many
aspects and values of a person. In other words, people are more than just moral beings and we should
be happy that this is the case. This paper will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as
my argument for why her contention is the correct one. First a brief summary of one of Wolf s most
notable pieces, Moral Saints . In Moral Saints , Wolf argues from example. She opens her piece by
asserting that she does not know if there are moral saints in the world, but she is happy that she has
not encountered any in her life. Wolf then goes on describing two different kinds of moral saints that
she believes can be conceptualized using common sense, the loving saint and

Future Shock Reflection
REFLECTION No one can tell what changes can become and what changes can leads us. In Alvin
Toffler s Future Shock, it signifies the life style evolution from past generation to the future (which is
in digital age). Since this book was published in the year 1970, the future that he meant is exactly what
today generation experiences. In Future shock, most of the written issues in the book were happened;
it is happening and not impossible to happen. In this book, He gave emphasis to what increasingly rate
of change can do to people. Within a short period of time, the world is abruptly changes that bring
confusion and too much shock to every individual. As what the author predicted, technology changed
rapidly from time to time. If you cannot easily adapt to what the future will be, you might feel stress
and disorientation. It is more important to be prepared and bear in mind that changes occur every time.
This is what Toffler is trying to convey with the people so that a ... Show more content on

People before are contented on simple life. They are satisfied with the simple machines that are
available in their generation but it is way too different from the current age. It is visible that some of
our parents have difficulties in embracing the technology based of the present. They have a hard time
to cope up with millennial and more behind from modern technology age for they are still practicing
their primitive ways which is not appropriate in today s generation. It is somehow sad to know that our
technology is in a rapid change while the people were left behind. This people are experiencing future
shock because of the vast change causes by technology that we know no one can control. But what is
the most important thing about this book, was made as a reminder that we have the freedom of choice,

  • 2. Essay about The Lovely Bones Movie vs Book Peter Jackson s 2009 film, The Lovely Bones, is based off of the New York Times bestseller novel written by Alice Sebold. Both the book and the movie adaptation tell the story of a young, 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon who is brutally murdered by her neighbor. In both versions, Susie narrates her story from the place between Heaven and Earth, the in between, showing the lives of her family and friends and how each of their lives have changed since her murder. However, the film adaptation and the original novel differ in the sense of the main character focalization throughout, the graphic explanatory to visual extent, and the relationship between the mother and father. Throughout Jackson s film adaptation, the primary character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the novel, the murder and rape of Susie Salmon is intensively described, ...cut into pieces... blood soaked into the soft, wet earth... leaving no question in the reader s mind as to what was happening or might have happened (Novel, Chapters 2 3). While in the movie version of the book, the murder and rape scene is not showed at all, only having to be assumed by showing Mr. Harvey, the murderer, bathing with his entire bathroom covered in blood. Also, the movie doesn t mention rape at all, only that Susie was murdered, while the book is specific in saying that she was first raped, and then murdered (Movie). Towards the end of the movie, Susie enters the body of Ruth Connors, Ray s best girl friend and a medium to the spirit world, while her and Ray are visiting the sink hole in their neighborhood, and kisses Ray (Movie). • 3. Summary Of Three Girls By Oates It was like a child s game in which you stare at foliage, grass, clouds in the sky, and suddenly you see a face or a figure, and after that recognition you can t not see the hidden shape, its staring you in the face. (Oates, 95) Oates Three Girls tells the story of two girl poets in the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan on a snowy day in March of 1956. They wander through the aisles of poetry, with commentary about various poets and collections of poetries and how they reflected on the girl poets . We were girl poets passionately enamored of T.S. Eliot but scornful of Robert Frost, whom we d been made to memorize in high school Slyly we communicated in code phrases from Eliot in the presence of obtuse others in our dining hall and residence. (Oates, 92) Suddenly she is pulled from her thoughts, as her friend touches her wrist and guides her further into the store to stumble upon Marilyn Monroe. From here, the girl poets follow her discretely, with a commentary of how Monroe s discretion was so much different form how she was normally seen. She was, at that moment, not a garnish blond showgirl , but rather this woman was an individual wholly absorbed in selecting, leafing through, pausing to read books (Oates, 93) They continue to follow her until she reaches the storefront, where they volunteer to pay for her books to keep the secret of her being here. From there they return her books to her outside, with her gifting them the Selected Poems of Marianne Moore before departing. The story closes with the two girl poets sharing their first kiss. The chosen quote, ( It was like a child s game in which you stare at foliage, grass, clouds in the sky, and suddenly you see a face or a figure, and after that recognition you can t not see the hidden shape, its staring you in the face. (Oates, 95)) plays not only to the main plot of the story (the girl poets discovering Marilyn Monroe in the Strand Bookstore), but also to the subplot (the girl poets sharing their first kiss and becoming lovers) as well. It applies to the main plot very clearly through two sides: that though by this point in the story only the girl poets have discovered it is Monroe, the realization that others could at moment s ... • 4. Pan Europa s Main Issues II. Issue Identification Pan Europa s main issues can be divided into three parts, the first and most important being their financial struggle. Due to a recent price war, Pan Europa s profitability has suffered greatly. Their debt equity ratio of 1.25 and price to earnings ratio of 8 times has resulted in a below average stock price. Currently, their stock is being traded below book value and well below its competition. This can have a disastrous effect on the company as many major security brokers are labeling the stock as uncertain and issuing sell recommendations to investors. This can result in the rapid sale of equity that would deflate Pan Europa s value even further. Such an event also opens the door for a hostile takeover, as a third party can quickly acquire a large portion of equity. A high debt equity ratio and historically high debt financing initiatives increases potential for financial distress, and possibly bankruptcy, if they cannot recover sufficient funds to cover their cost of debt The second issue faced by Pan Europa has to do with their external environment. Low population growth in northern Europe coupled with increasingly saturated markets has resulted in stagnant sales. As competition intensifies, Pan Europa is forced to make risky decisions, such as the provocation of a price war mentioned above. Although they may cause smaller, weaker firms to exit the market in the short term, these rash decisions have impacted Pan Europa s bottom line. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reason why I chose it was because I have been interested in serving others in a right way. The selection of Hadewijch Give all for all helped me understand what God expects me to do for others. However, Richard Foster mentions at the end of the selection that it was not easy to admit the truth that the author discussed. On my first time of reading, I also had similar feeling like this. It s because my acts of service for others seem no longer commendable in the sight of God according to his writing. As I read it over and over to fully understand its meaning, I realized that my services that I have done for others may be not satisfying or pleasing God. Through this reading, I looked back my ministry that I have done for others in the past. I thought I could be proud of myself at least in this area, service. Wants and needs, the two positive categories, are prioritized differently by everyone. People often misinterpret some parts of these categories, believing certain wants are needs and vice versa. • 7. Evaluation Of A Universal Design For Learning When it comes to education, it is important to determine what method of content delivery is going to be the most effective for each individual class. Furthermore, it becomes increasingly important to determine the most effective strategies for each individual student. Within the concept of a universal design for learning (UDL), it becomes important to ensure that students have more than just access to information: Non educators often make the mistake of equating access to information with access to learning (Rose Meyer 2002). With UDL, students not only have access to information, but they are enable through the access to learning. This can be manifested in a number of ways, but is characterized by the availability of environments that promote learning and education that promotes learning. UDL then becomes the method for which educators provide students with a variety of methods to engage cognition, and allow for educators to meet the needs of diverse learners. Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners by Implementing UDL Developing a curriculum is a difficult process, moreso when an educator has to keep in mind the number of students they are trying to reach. At the secondary level, it is not uncommon for a teacher to be responsible for 150 or more students. Each of these students presents a unique and trying task for educators who want to help students learn. While one could begin this story with a look all the way back to so called primitive art which often reflected an interest in human sexuality, if only based on concerns about fertility it may be more appropriate to begin with a culture whose traditions have been clearly identified as having found their way into the ancient Roman psyche. That is, the culture of ancient Egypt. An example of this interest in human sexuality, and an expression of it in art, is Min, the Egyptian god of male fertility. Representing masculine virility, Min was usually portrayed with an erect penis, which he typically grasped in his left hand. As the ancient Romans were connected to certain areas of what is now known as Egypt, and as it has been shown that they adopted the worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis sometime in the first century BC, it may be reasonable to assume that they were familiar with such gods as Min, and may have even discovered some of these aforementioned depictions. As one continues to trace the history of sexuality and the erotic image leading up to the production of Giulio Romano s I Modi, a logical stop along the journey would be ancient Greece. As time and space limit the scope of this analysis, direct examples from the art and culture of this region will not be examined. However, the contribution of the Greeks to the art, ... He would have seen slave trafficking, debt slave practices and business fraud first hand. On his commercial travels he would have had a front row seat for seeing the disparity between the very poor peasants and the merchants with great wealth. School uniforms reduce undesirable behavior because they put students in the right frame of mind to learn (Portner). Uniforms can be a useful tool in improving children s learning skills and attitudes toward school. It increases the student achievement and level of preparedness. School requires children to put on the uniforms in a reasonable way to improve learning skills, discipline, and focus (Kelly). Students can consider the uniform as their school s physical awarded icon just for going to that particular school. Although this could create the students to discriminate the schools for which the school is better or worse, they can be proud of themselves for being a student and be motivated every day to study. The United States criminal justice system is not an institution to be underestimated, as it represents the highest incarceration rate of all world nations at a staggering 700 inmates per 100 thousand citizens (Krisberg, 7). Based on the social and political structure of democracy in the United States, it is argued that incarceration systems should follow the same roots of equality and freedom; however, the current format demonstrates otherwise. Currently, the United States criminal justice system faces issues of inhumane treatment due to the sheer overcrowding, which restrict inmates from just treatment within penitentiaries. This lack of equality standards was argued in the 2011 court case, Brown v. Plata, which California prison systems were forced to decrease prisons overcapacity rate from 175% to 137.5% due to the overwhelming amount of inmate mistreatment (Koehler, 3). In the decision of Brown v. Being the code by which we live our lives, morality is a concept that leaks into almost every aspect of human life. For example, even a mundane activity like eating a sandwich for lunch can have moral implications. Consider this question, was the turkey that ended up on the sandwich raised in horrific factory farm conditions and subjected to torturous treatment? That is a question with heavy moral implications. Distinguishing right action from wrong is a crucial skill for humans to have, but is morality the only thing that truly matters about a person. Susan Wolf, an esteemed philosopher, thinks it is not. Wolf argues that morality is just one of many aspects and values of a person. In other words, people are more than just moral beings and we should be happy that this is the case. This paper will provide a brief look at Susan Wolf s argument as well as my argument for why her contention is the correct one.
