This document discusses servers from several perspectives: types of servers including application, database, and file servers; server roles in a network; planning a server installation including goals, configuration, and budgeting; hardware verification and installation including components like motherboards, storage, and redundancy; and server operating systems. Servers are defined as both specialized software for distributing information over a network and hardware devices designed to run server software. Reasons for the higher costs of server hardware include expandability for growth, dependability for 24/7 uptime, and quality components designed for server environments.
