Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effects of 4 different cavity disinfectants on Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Enterococcus faecalis bacteria in different time periods.
Study Design: The antibacterial effects of Cavity Cleanser, Tubulicid Red Label, Chloraxid 2%, and Oxygenated Water cavity disinfectant solutions on E. faecalis (ATCC 29212), S. mutans (ATCC 25175), and L. acidophilus (RSKK 03037) bacterial strains were evaluated by disk diffusion method. In the study where vancomycin antibiogram disc constituted the positive control group, physiological saline solution was used as the negative control group. Standard, sterile, blank antibiogram discs of 5 mm in diameter, in which 15 μL of each material were added, were placed on agar plates at 2.5–3 cm intervals. The inhibition zone diameters formed around the discs that were left to incubate for 24–48 hours at 37°C were measured in millimeters. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using one-way analysis of variance, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Levene, and Bonferroni tests.
Results: At the end of the study the solutions tested showed a statistically significant antibacterial effect on all bacterial strains used (p<0.05). Cavity Cleanser disinfectant containing 2% chlorhexidine showed the highest antibacterial effect on S. mutans and L. acidophilus, and benzalkonium-containing Tubulicid Red disinfectant on E. faecalis.
Conclusion: The antibacterial effect of all cavity disinfectants used in the study was found to be higher at the end of the 48th hour than at the end of the 24th hour, but there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05).

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. INTRODUCTION
• One of the most important objectives of
endodontic therapy is to completely eliminate
intracanal microorganisms from
the root canal system to create favourable
environment for healing and to prevent
reinfection in order to achieve long - term
success.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
3. • Endodontic infections are polymicrobial in nature
with predominant-anaerobic microorganisms.
• Bacteria and their metabolic products, enzymes,
and toxins play a vital role in the initiation,
propagation, and persistence of pulpal and
periradicular pathosis.
• Although several factors contribute to endodontic
failures; the literature reported that persistent
intraradicular or secondary infection is the major
etiology for failed endodontic therapy.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
5. • Studies have shown that microflora in failed
root canal therapy are different from those
found in untreated teeth.
• Enterococcus faecaiis (E. faecalis) and Candida
albicans (c. albicans) are considered to be the
most resistant species in infected root canals
and they are often associated with endodontic
treatment failures.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
6. • E. faecalis is a gram positive, facultative
anaerobic cocci commonly found in persistent
root canal infection and commonly recovered
in over one-third of the canal of
endodontically treated teeth with persisting
periapical lesions.
• C. albicans, the most predominant and
commonly isolated yeast in failed root canal
treatment with periradicular pathosis.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
7. • It may gain access to the root canal from the
oral cavity as a result of poor asepsis during
endodontic treatment procedures or because of
coronal leakage.
• It is a dentinophilic aerobic microorganism able
to survive in harsh ecologic environment of root
canal.
• Due to complex anatomy of root canal system, an
effective disinfection is achieved by augmenting
mechanical preparation with antimicrobial
irrigants.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
8. • Irrigants help in removal of debris and
microorganisms form the canal that cannot be
reached by endodontic instruments.
• An ideal root canal irrigant should have good
antimicrobial efficacy, nontoxic to periapical
tissues, capable of dissolving necrotic tissue,
able to lubricate the canal, and help in smear
layer removal.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
9. • Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been widely
used as root canal irrigant due to its potent
antimicrobial activity and tissue dissolving
ability.
• It has several undesirable characteristics such
as tissue toxicity, risk of subcutaneous
emphysema, allergic potential, and
disagreeable smell and taste.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
10. • Chlorhexidine (CHX) digluconate has been
suggested as root canal irrigant because of its
good antimicrobial efficacy and substantivity.
• It seems to act by adsorbing onto the cell wall of
microorganisms resulting in leakage of
intracellular components.
• In low concentration, it has bacteriostatic effect.
At higher concentration, has bactericidal effect
due to precipitation and coagulation of
intracellular constituents.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
11. • QMix 2 in 1, an experimental irrigating solution,
contains a mixture of a bisbiguanide antimicrobial
agent, a polyamino carboxylic acid calcium
chelating agent; saline; and a surfactant.
• It was evaluated as an effective irrigant
similar to 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid
(EDTA) in removing canal wall smear layer after
the use of 5.25% NaOCI as the initial rinse.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
12. • QMix had stronger antibacterial effects against E.
Faecalis biofilm present in dentin.
• Studies are needed to evaluate the antimicrobial
efficacy of Qmix 2 in 1 in comparison with NaOCl
and CHX against E. faecalis and C. albicans.
• The aim of the present study is to compare the
antimicrobial efficacy of QMix 2 in 1 with 5.25%
NaOCl and 2% CHX digluconate against E. faecalis
and C. Albicans.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
13. MATERIALS AND METHODS
• Eighty sound healthy human mandibular
premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic
treatment were taken.
• Teeth were cleaned using ultrasonic scalers to
render them free from calculus and tissue
tags, following which they were stored in
physiological saline until use.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
14. • The teeth were decoronated at the
cementoenamel junction using diamond disc
and the root lengths was standardized to
approximately 14 mm.
• Pulp was extirpated and working length was
established 1 mm short of apex where the file
exited the apical foramen.
• Gates Glidden drills #3 were-used to prepare
the root canal orifices.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
15. • Apical preparation was done using K-file up to the ISO
size #40.
• Canals were irrigated copiously with physiologic saline
after each instrument.
• Each canal was then rinsed with 1 mL of 17% EDTA
(Prime Dental Product) for 1 min followed by 3 mL of
5.25% NaOCI to facilitate the removal of smear
layer.
• The roots were coated with nail varnish and apical
foramen sealed with type 11 glass ionomer cement.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
16. • The roots were sterilized in an autoclave for 15 min at
121°C and 15lb of pressure to ensure complete
sterilization within the canal space.
• Efficacy of sterilization was tested by sampling the root
canal with paper points.
• The paper points were placed into a test tube containing
1 ml reduced transport fluid, vortexed for 10s, placed
onto Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar (HiMedia
Laboratories, Mumbai, India) and Sabouraud dextrose
agar, incubated at 37°C for 48 h, and examined for
growth.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
17. • A suspension of E.faecalis (ATCC 29212) and C.
albicans (Courtesy IBMS Institute, Chennai,
India) were adjusted to 0.5 turbidity on the
McFarland scale (1.5 x 108 bacteria/mL).
• E. faecalis suspension of 10 ul, was injected into
Group I samples containing 40 teeth and 10 ul,
suspension of C. albicans into Group 2 samples
containing 40 teeth using a micropipette in
a Class 11 vertical laminar airflow cabinet to
prevent any airborne contamination.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
18. • Then inoculated specimens with E. faecalis
were placed in vials filled with BHI agar and
inoculated specimens with C. albicans were
placed in vials filled with Sabouraud dextrose
agar, then inoculum was added every day and
incubated aerobically at 37°C for 3 days.
• E. faecalis has ability to form biofilm on root
canal walls.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
19. • After 3 days, aliquots were-taken from each
tooth using a syringe and plated on BHI agar
to verify the growth of E. faecalis and
Sabouraud dextrose agar to verify the growth
of C. Albicans.
• At the end of 3 days, teeth were removed
from the vials and excess fluid in canal was
removed with sterile paper points.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
20. • The specimens from each group were divided
into four subgroups (A, B, C, and D) of 1 0 teeth
each depending on the experimental irrigating
solution used.
• Test solutions used were:
1. Subgroup lA and IIA: 3 mL of 5.25% NaOCI
2. IB and lIB: 3 mL of 2% CHX
3. IC and IIC: 3 mL of Qmix
4. ID and lID: 3 mL of 0.9% saline
www.indiandentalacademy.com
21. • Irrigation was accomplished using 30 gauge
ProRinse needle (Dentsply) placed 1-2 mm short
of the working length.
• The time of contact of each irrigant was 1 min
and a final flush was done with 5mL of distilled
water to terminate the action
of irrigant.
• A small amount of saline solution was introduced
into the canal, and an endodontic hand file was
used in a filing motion to a level 1 mm short of
the root apex.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
22. • Sterile 30 gauge needle was used to collect
0.01 mL (10 uL) of the sample from the canal.
• Using a bacterial inoculation loop; the
bacterial suspension was placed on Sabouraud
dextrose agar and BHI agar.
• The plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 h
and then number of colony forming units
(CFUs) was counted.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
23. • Log transformation of absolute bacterial CFU
was performed.
• Mean Log CFUs were compared among the
groups using analysis of variance (ANOVA)
followed by post-hoc Games-Howell test.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
24. Results
• Results were analyzed with the Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)/Predictive
Analytics Software (PASW) version 18
software.
• QMix 2 in 1 was the most effective and
statistically significant when compared with
5.25% NaOCI and 2% CHX (P < 0.001).
• There is no statistical significant difference
between 5.25% NaOCl and 2% CHX (P> 0.001)

26. DISCUSSION
• The main goal of chemomechanical preparation
of infected root canals is to completely eliminate
intracanal bacteria and prevention of
recontamination after treatment.
• E. faecalis and C. albicans are frequently isolated
in root canals with pulpal infection and in
secondary/persistent endodontic infections.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
27. • In the present study QMix has shown good
antimicrobial efficacy and statistically superior
to all other irrigants.
• The reason could be effective functioning of
individual constituents of it.
• Surface active agent lowers the surface
tension of solution and increases their
wettability and enables better penetration
of an irrigant in the root canal.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
28. • The potential benefit of bisbiguanide in this
mixture is that it prevents the microbial
colonization on dentin surface.
• Calcium chelating agent can cause cell wall
damage in gram negative bacteria by chelating
and removing divalent cations (Mg and
Ca) from bacterial cell membrane and
increasing its permeability.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
29. • Wang et aI. concluded that QMix and 6%
NaOCI had stronger antibacterial effects
against young and old E. faecalis biofilm in
dentin than 2% NaOCI and 2% CHX.
• QMix showed statistically superior
antimicrobial efficacy against C. Albicans.
• EDTA present in QMix effectively removes the
smear layer and CHX prevents the colonization
of fungi on dentinal walls.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
30. • NaOCI has effectively killed E. faecaiis and C.
albicans.
• NaOCI exerts its antibacterial effect by inducing
the irreversible oxidation of sulfhydryl groups of
essential bacterial enzymes, resulting in disulfide
linkages, with consequent disruption of the
metabolic function of bacterial cells.
• Many in vitro and in vivo studies have proved
NaOCl has good antimicrobial efficacy against E.
faecalis.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
31. • Fidalgo et al. evaluated the antimicrobial
activity of NaOCI, citric acid, and EDTA against
E. faecalis, C. albicans, and Staphylococcus
aureus.
• They concluded that 2.5% and 5.25%
NaOCI are microbiocides against S. aureus,
while 0.5% and 1% NaOCI are only
microbiostatic against the tested E.
faecalis and C. albicans.

32. • CHX is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent
with substantivity property.
• The positively charged ions released by CHX
can adsorb into dentin and prevent microbial
colonization.
• CHX has shown good antimicrobial efficacy
against E.faecalis and C. albicans, but it is
inferior to QMix in this study.

33. • Pavlovic and Zivkovic concluded that 2% CHX
solution was effective against S. aureus,
Streptococcus mutans, E. faecalis , Escherichia
coli, and C. albicans.
• There was no statistical significant difference
between CHX and NaOCI.
• Arslan et aI.concluded that propolis, BioPure
MTAD, 5% NaOCI, and 2% CHX showed good
antimicrobial activity against E.faecalis and C.
albicans.

34. • Ruff et aI. investigated the efficacy of 6%
NaOCl, 2% CHX, 17% EDTA, and BioPure
MTAD against C. albicans and concluded that
2% CHX and 6% NaOCI were equally effective
and statistically superior to 17% EDTA and
BioPure MTAD.
• Saline has also shown considerable reduction
in the CFU counts of E.faecaiis and C. Albicans.

35. • The mechanical shaping and cleaning of the
canals and irrigation with saline served to
flush out the debris from the canals. This
accounted for a reduction in the microbial
counts.
• Kuruvilla and Kamath reported a significant
reduction in microbial counts with usage of
saline in canals without mechanical
preparation.

36. Conclusion
• Within the limitations of this study, QMix 2 in
1 demonstrated significant antimicrobial
efficacy against E.faecalis and C. Albicans.
