Communication operates on two levels - the content message about the topic being discussed, and the relational message about feelings towards one another. Relational messages convey affinity or liking, as well as control and influence. Communication is unavoidable as unintentional messages are always sent, and the effects of communication are irreversible as offhand comments can have lasting impacts. While communication aims to reduce misunderstandings, bad communication can sometimes increase ill feelings. Formal communication networks in organizations use charts to structure who communicates with whom to complete tasks and ensure employees understand performance responsibilities.
