2. Introduction
• Communication is simply the act of transferring information
from one place, person or group to another.
• Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message
and a recipient. This may sound simple, but communication is
actually a very complex subject.
• Telecommunications in India began with the introduction of
the telegraph.
• The Indian postal and telecom sectors are one of the world's
oldest.
• In 1850, the first experimental electric telegraph line was
started between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. In 1851, it was
opened for the use of the British East India Company.
• Ministry of Communications is a union ministerial agency
under the Government of India responsible for
telecommunications and postal service. It was carved out
of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on
19 July 2016. It consists of two departments viz. Department of
Telecommunications and the Department of Posts.
3. Categories of Communication
• The different categories of communication include:
• Spoken or Verbal Communication, which includes face-
to-face, telephone, radio or television and other media.
• Non-Verbal Communication, covering body language,
gestures, how we dress or act, where we stand, and even
our scent. For example, the tone of voice can give clues to
mood or emotional state.
• Written Communication: which includes letters, e-mails,
social media, books, magazines, the Internet and other
media. Today, we can all write and publish our ideas
online, which has led to an explosion of information and
communication possibilities.
• Visualizations: Graphs and charts, maps, logos and
other visualizations can all communicate messages.
4. Postal Services
• Postal system was a vital for tool for the
modernization of a society.
• Fast emerging as an important component of the
modern communication and information sector.
• India possesses the largest postal network in the
world with 155,000 post offices spread all over
the country as on March 31, 2001, of which 89
per cent are in the rural sector.
• The state Sikkim alone has 5 head post offices.
• The computerization and modernization in
most of the offices are completed.
• The computerization and networking greatly
improve the quality and efficiency of existing
services.
• The state have a total of 211 post offices spread
across the state. Each Post Office of Sikkim has a
unique Pin Code.
• The first two digits of the Pin code indicate the state,
as each state has its unique state code. The remaining
digits indicate districts and post offices.
• The Pin code of Sikkim Post offices starts with two
unique digits between the numbers 73.
6. Telecome
• Telecommunications, also known as telecom, is the exchange of
information over significant distances by electronic means and
refers to all types of voice, data and video transmission that includes
wired phones; mobile devices, such as cell phones; microwave
communications; optics fibres; satellites; radio and television
broadcasting; the internet; and telegraphs.
• In 1850, the first experimental electric telegraph line was started
between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. In 1851, it was opened for
the use of the British East India Company.
• Over the past decades, Sikkim achievement in this sector has been
quite impressive both in fixed line phones subscribers. Presently,
more and more mobile users are there than fixed line/Landline
communication.
• Mobile communication and the internet are going to set the counters
of further technological progress over the next two-three decades.
• Wireless communication introduced in Sikkim in between 2000-
2005.
8. SIKKIM GETS ITS OWN TELECOM

• The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
• The State will have better telecom services and coverage.
• “Earlier, as Sikkim was under West Bengal circle.
• Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is a government
owned telecommunications service provider headquartered
in New Delhi, India.
• It is under the ownership of Department of
Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications,
Government of India. It was incorporated on 1st October 2000
by the Government of India.
9. Media
• Print and electronic media are the two most common mediums of
communication in the world today.
• The media is considered as the important channel of knowledge
dissemination. The development of the media therefore can be taken as
another rough index in knowledge dissemination in the state.
• The number of publications and growth of readership in Sikkim is
expanding rapidly.
• The reason for such expansion is attributed to rise of literacy in the state
(81.42%).
• The history of the Information and Public Relations department dates back
to the time of the monarchy.
• At present, there are 70 plus daily bi-weekly and weekly papers in
Sikkim.
• The Sikkim express and Sikkim Now In English and Samay Dainik and
Hamro Prajashakti in Nepali language are widely circulated local papers
in Sikkim.
10. Medias in Sikkim
• Monthly magazine by Mr. Kashiraj Pradhan called Kanchenjunga (15th August, 1957)
and Sikkim Fortnightly by Mr. K.B. Thapa. With the advent of time, the need to have an
official news bulletin of the Government of Sikkim was felt. The Sikkim Government
decided to bring out its activities, both planned and non-planned in a monthly
magazine under the name of Sikkim Herald.
• Sikkim Herald-The first Sikkim Herald in Nepali dates back to March 1959. then
published as a weekly in 1963 during the tenure of Mr. N.K. Rustomji who was the
then Dewan of Sikkim.
• Mr. C. D. Rai, former Secretary to the Government of Sikkim was designated as the
Editor of the first Sikkim Herald.
• Today, it is a matter of great pride that Sikkim Herald is published in 13 local
languages
• DD Sikkim is a state owned television channel telecasting from Doordarshan. Nayuma
channel.
• Sikkim Express is an English daily newspaper published from Gangtok, Sikkim, India.
• It is the oldest and largest circulated English daily newspaper in Sikkim. The news
paper started as weekly in 1976 and converted as daily in 2003 and it is the first English
newspaper of Sikkim state.

• Internet is currently the faster growing media in
Sikkim.
