Communication is an exchange of facts, ideas,
opinions, or emotions by two or more persons.
Communication is much more than simply
transmission of information.
Communication is the basic element of human
interactions.
It is one of the most vital components of all nursing
practice
4. Definition
1. Communication is the process of exchanging
information, thoughts, ideas and feelings, from
one individual to another.
2. Communication is the sum total of the entire
things one person does when he wants to create
understanding in the mind of another.
3. Communication is the process by which a
message is passed from the sender to the receiver
with the objective that the message sent is
received and understood as intended
5. Types of communication
Divided into 3 types :
1. On the basis of relationship
Formal
Informal
2. On the basis of flow
Downward
Upward
horizontal
3. On the basis of expression
•Verbal : oral and written
•Non-verbal : facial expression, posture, eye contact
6. CHANNELS
Face to face communication
Broad cast media: TV, radio, loudspeaker etc
Mobile
Electronic : email, internet, social media
Written : policies, letters, memos, notices,
announcements, etc
9. Barriers of communication
Emotional factors: jealousy, suspicion, anger,
anxiety
Physical factors: fatigue, illness, speech defects,
deafness, pain
Intellectual factors: low IQ, lack of knowledge,
misinterpretation of words
Social factors: cultural differences, language
Environmental factors: noise, lack of privacy,
uncomfortable accommodation
10. OTHER: inattention, badly expressed message, status
and position, resistance to change, use of health care
jargons
11. Summary
Communication is a two way process. A nurse who
communicates with a patient must understand what
the patient is trying to communicate. The process of
human interaction occurs through communication.
