What is user experience and why does it matterSarah Horton
Many factors influence decision-making when producing websites, applications, and apps. In many cases, decision-making is focused on addressing the values of the producer, and the most important factor is overlooked: the consumer. People are loyal to products and services that satisfy their needs and provide content and features that they value. Providing a good user experience benefits both consumer and producer.
In this session we will look at user experience broadly, and then through the lens of accessibility, as a way of bringing into focus the value of providing accessible and enjoyable user experiences.

I remember during my freshman year at college, I worked at a retail store, and it was the evening of Thanksgiving, so I was napping right before my shift. This to me meant that I would be going to work at the stroke of midnight to deal with the huge sales. I remember thinking to myself, “I’m glad I took a nap before driving to work.” However, I wondered what about my fellow workers who just had an energy drink or some other form of caffeine. How are they feeling?

As someone who likes to travel, I know that good road games is a good way to entertain everyone in the vehicle, keep the driver focused on what really matters which is getting everyone from A to B safe and sound. These games are especially important when there may not be a DVD player in the back of a seat to keep everyone entertained.
These are the slides from the MyCharityConnects Spring 2010 workshops (web conference) in Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray.

Everything Old is New Again: The Fundamentals of Fundraising in the Digital World
The game of fundraising and community engagement seems to be constantly shifting. New tools, new trends, new challenges all seem to be vying for attention, and charities are being held to account for every penny spent and every hour worked and volunteered. How do you tie together traditional fundraising with the brave new world of fundraising and campaign-building online? Learn why online giving is an extension of everything you already know, and why most of us could improve both our online and offline fundraising using techniques that are as ‘old as the hills’. Finally, discover why online fundraising actually emphasizes the need for proper and targeted traditional offline fundraising, marketing, and communications.
Websites 101
Your website is one of the most important communication vehicles you have - is it working for your organization the way it should? Take your website from good to great by learning the fundamentals of what makes for a really good website, one that is user-friendly, attractive and drives up online donations.

Storytelling For The Web: Integrate Storytelling in your Design ProcessChiara Aliotta
In this slides I explain how I have used storytelling techniques to elevate websites and brands and create memorable user experiences. You can discover practical tips as I showcase the elements of good storytelling and its applied to some examples of diverse brands/projects..
1. Mistakes that we face
commonly
• TINY CLICKABLE AREAS
• LONG REGISTRATION FORMS
• NO BACKGROUND MUSIC
• DUPLICATE PAGE TITLES
• CONTENT DIFFICULT TO SCAN
• NO WAY TO GET IN TOUCH
• NO WAY TO SEARCH
• TOO MUCH FUNCTIONALITY IN REGISTRATION
• CONTENT BLOCKS LAYERING UPON EACH OTHER
• BLINKING IMAGES
2. Tiny Clickable Areas
• Far too small
• Clicking them is harder than
it should be
Why would we want a
larger clickable area?
• Simple. Because our hand
movement with the mouse
isn’t very precise.
• A large clickable area makes
it easier to hover the mouse
cursor over the link.
3. Long registration forms?
Not again!!
• Barriers
• No fun
• Consumes time
• Frustrating
Who is going to remember the
user name and password?
6. Duplicate Page Titles
• Generic title
• Robs a couple of key benefits
What the page is about
Search engine results pages.
SEO(search engine optimizer)
how relevant your page is to a particular search term.
7. Content difficult to scan
Good copy
Visitors scans
Visitors will still need to read
text to process information
We jump from one piece of
content to another, from one
website to the next.
10. Solution:
• Forums to the rescue
• Online forums are a great
communication channel
• A public forum is better than a
simple contact form or email
• People can help each other
11. No Way To Search
Where’s The Search Box?
Jackob Nielsen calls those people search-dominant
users
More than half of all users are search-dominant
People know exactly what they’re looking for
Go straight for the search button
You don’t need to code your own search feature
12. Content blocks layering upon each
other
Large Flash-movies
Site navigation is hidden
No chance to browse
13. Too much functionality in
registration
Users do not have to identify themselves to
enjoy some functionality
Some blogs require people to register before
posting
Once users start using your website, they will
more likely sign up
