● Talking to young people who are contemplating whether to stick around on earth
● Misunderstood
● A relative of mine literally told me that mental illness is just in your head. They were not trying
to be funny.
● "Why are you crying? What is crying going to do for you?"
● Don't talk about it, you are fine
● Not talking about it until someone close dies
● Just ignored (Raised by parents who grew up during the great depression - so they had not
time for mental health concerns)
● The younger generation, such as our students, are more open to talking and sharing

MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in
multiple ways. In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
(PM Session)
● Midwestern Individualism - we don't ask for help, we pull ourselves up
● It wasn't talked about when I was growing up. It's more open now.
● PTSD of me and others after Iraq deployment
● Push it down
● In the Scandinavian/midwest culture, I think we are encouraged to be very close-lipped.
● When younger - it was not talked about much, but my kids are so much more open and
accepting than when I was a kid.
● I think people with mental illness were considered weak-minded
● It's all in the head...Just snap out of it. As though it is a choice.
● family suicide, abusive spouses, alcoholism,
● Not talked about with family, has changed in more recent years to be more open
● family was not supportive
● schools not sure what to do with it
● It's not talked about, it's not okay to admit having a mental health issue, you're weak and not
worth the time.
● I think openness about mental illness is sometimes treated as "unprofessional."
● Family with MS, Bi-polar, depression, anxiety
● Not talked about. Get over it.
● Every family has its issues -but we don't share it.

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
AM Session
● I've seen so many children impacted by parent's mental struggles. Even if there
isn't a genetic factor, just seeing the behavior in parents and them imitating it
as a child leads to so many problems for children of mental illness.
● The fear of another panic attack is worrisome
● In this film, I identified with the ice cream server...like I might stress out students
by asking: When do you want to meet? Tuesday or Wednesday? 11 or noon?
Teams on BlueJeans? I can see how that could be stressful for someone.
● Heavy/suffocating
● Stigma feels isolative
● Limiting
● Terrified, embarrassed
● Frustrating. Knowing that you should be able to do things but your mind won't
allow you to.
● Lonely
● She likely wanted to flee
● Shame at being different
● Scary, Weak
● Imposter Syndrome
● Weak, vulnerable

What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
AM Session
● Not knowing where to start
● Overwhelmed
● Don't want others to see you differently
● Thinking you can handle it on your own
● Time
● Shaming ourselves, being shamed by family members, or being shamed by professionals.
● Fear, afraid to be called out/shunned
● Access to resources, Lack of resources and services in a rural area
● Worried about the expense
● They may need to protect their 'role' as mother or protector
● Not understanding
● You don't want to appear weak and vulnerable to anyone else...especially as a parent,
professional, etc. etc. Need to keep it together and work through it.
● It can take weeks/months to find help in this rural area.
● Pressure to be able to do it all
● Maintaining confidentiality/privacy
● Men are supposed to be strong and not share these emotions. Starts with boys don't cry.
● What is this is your "normal" and you don't realize that this isn't how it's supposed to be....
● As a football coach, one of the first lessons I taught is it is ok to have these emotions and still
be a great athlete.
● Finding one trusted person to support your journey
● There is a fine balance between telling our story, and companioning others through theirs.
28. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
PM Session
● Compromises credibility
● Some not knowing the resources
● embarrassment
● shame
● Not believing the resources are available to help
● time
● People don't want to burden others.
● lack of knowledge
● lack of resources
● embarrassed weak
● abandonment
● The response
● Sometimes you don't even know how or who to ask for help
● feels like it's not that bad, you'll get over it
● Even though there is less today than there used to be, there is still a
stigma and discrimination. Therefore, you don't want people to know.
● money
● The process of getting help being difficult to navigate - daunting, just
one more thing "to do"
● It's really hard to find resources

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
AM Session
● Wholeness is different from person to person
● My personal view is that a lot of what we call "abnormal" is actually a very normal
reaction to an abnormal world.
● Work with your strengths instead of trying to change weakness
● New ways to think about my students who experience those emotions and
feelings.
● Agree with the fact that we see mental illness as a personal struggle, letting the
drivers of mental illness (trauma, abuse, access to resources, oppression, etc.) off
the hook.
● I appreciated the message of not conforming and not feeling like you need to
change yourself
● Little frustrated with "medicating your symptoms away"
● Makes me wonder why we keep trying to put everyone into the same box and
expect them to 'fit'
● Amazing photography. How does one live without conforming to a "normal world"
working, not being free.
● Thin line between brilliance and madness is not new, but this is still interesting,
and the movie is a beautiful explanation.
● I heard a doctor say depression is like diabetes. People think it is ok to medicate
diabetes but act like it is wrong for a medical condition such as depression.
33. #Movies4MentalHealth
Let’s go deeper…
#Movies4MentalHealth
AM Session continued
● She makes it sound like all pharmaceuticals are bad and that is not the case.
Meds can be a good thing
● What many don't understand is that the outward manifestation of a mental
illness is just a symptom. There may be many different root causes that
produce the same outward symptoms. Treatment of symptoms without
determining the root cause can be dangerous.
● Medications are often a band aid to the larger need to better support people
in non-pharmacological ways. We cannot "fix" mental health stigma by
medicating it away.
● Sounds like medication has a stigma ...
● I feel the medication piece relies heavily on the practitioner - the good ones
will take the time to try to find root causes while others will just slap a
prescription on the table so they can get on to the next patient.
● 'The system was not designed for a spirit like mine'. Is it possible for the system
be designed for all spirits? Makes me think of those students that had a hard
time in my field/classes.
● Our current system isn't really designed for anyone.
● And there is a cultural context there. People who see and hear things that
other people don't hear or see were revered in aboriginal societies around the
world.
34. #Movies4MentalHealth
What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
PM Session
● The disconnect between modern life, work, society, expectations and
what is actually healthy and nurturing
● Trying to be perfect is setting yourself up to fall short of your goal.
● trying to find a way to survive/thrive in a world that wasn't built for
your body/mind
● She got radio transmitters wrong, transmitters send out a signal,
receivers take in a signal, transceivers do both. Yes its pedantic but it
bothered me.
● valuing people for who they are without medication to fit in
● being told you have a chemical imbalance vs addressing the trauma
● The connection of her spirit and not being able to do something that
makes her uncomfortable without a prescription. There are other
ways to help, and possibly even more than our society is willing to
find. Changing what society deems as 'normal' to accept that what
once was it not necessarily appropriate or correct. Let's change that.
● Sometimes it feels like it is unreasonable to react to the world as it is
in a reasonable way.
35. #Movies4MentalHealth
Let’s go deeper…
#Movies4MentalHealth
PM Session continued
● There are many ways to address trauma in cognitive behavioral
therapy (just one example).
● I heard once that the more removed from nature one is the more
"insane" one becomes...the opening statement made me think of
that. It sounded like she could relate to nature, but not society as
it is.
● I did not agree with her view of medication. Listening to her makes
you think that no one would need medication. Sometimes you
NEED medication. Some people, yes, can manage mental illness
without a prescription, but often it cannot be done. Not only is
there a stigma around mental illness, there is also a stigma
around medication.
● Agreed.
● I hear that, better living through chemistry
● Nothing wrong with asking for help and that can mean meds.
36. #Movies4MentalHealth
What are some practices that help
support your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth

● Mindful meditation
● Going on walks and hikes
● Planned activities - trips, getting together with friends, seeing my kids. Always
helpful to have something to look forward to.
● need silence to recharge
● Exercise
● Awareness of the need to support your wellness in the first place and taking the time
to practice
● Quiet time with pets
● Another consideration is how one students expression of mental health and how it
impacts other students. It can be very disruptive.
● Spending time outside with family/kids-laughing and just enjoying each other.
● Order, routine, diet, exercise, completing tasks
● Writing
● Laughing, playing, pontoon
● Getting vitamin and mineral levels checked and supplementing appropriately. It's
relatively inexpensive and the side effect profile is favorable.

● My job supports my wellness. I love teaching and the students.
● Getting outside, mindful listening in nature, being with my family and dogs
(purposeful, technology-free time)...
37. #Movies4MentalHealth

through proper diet, sleep, water, and exercise. I need to walk my talk.
● Being active and working to let go of the stressors
● Intentionally trying to build community
● A good bike ride
● Enjoying my husband and appreciating him.

AM Session
● Hopefulness
● At first it was very depressing, but then felt uplifting
● Peace amongst the chaos of NYC - and then the dog. The dog was the best part.
● Power to overcome
● It was an advocate for self care
● I felt the hug and who in my life gives the best hugs.
● "The clock that ticks my very life away"- I think the past two years and lack of social
connection has left many feeling this way
● Anxious/depressing with the loop or repetition...but the light of purpose/finding
something cool
● Finding the light in the dark days.
● To see the light in people
● Great reminder to look for the color in our lives rather than focusing on the dark -
for example outside my window I can see at least 10 shades of green right now.
● Try looking at life through a different lens. We are ALL lucky and don't have to look
very hard and far to realize that. Too busy equals stress, Too much time can bring
depression. Find a purpose and a balance.
● Stop and enjoy the little things
● The race of life and the moments that matter the most. Finding happiness in the
small things.
● Loving my purpose in life, but then having the last few years and all the stuff
involved, feel like it is crushing or smothering that purpose and me.

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
PM Session
● Routine, you need to take time to look at the positive. Love the dog!
● The statement "I have become a machine" sticks
● How important it is to have activities that feed your soul beyond the everyday
routine.
● As the narrator found a path and a purpose, I found my posture straightening out.
● Importance of doing what you love. Nurturing your passions
● Just going through the motions. When all we want to do is smile.
● shawshank when Brooks gets out of prison. the world got into a big hurry
● It felt a lot like floating, not in the good way.
● Routines tend to be a burden
● With the loss of a need for as much physical work that needs to be done, in part due
to mechanization, and efforts to be efficient, what will we do with our time?
● Find the things that fill up your cup
● Unable to see beyond the everyday motions we feel we are required to do.
● When he felt like a cog it reminded me of going to my windowless cube and then to
my windowless classroom and teaching to my student-less classroom.
● The "empty nest" was my wakeup call for a new purpose. After 25 years raising kids it
left me with no good reason to get up and deal with the daily aches and pains. I had
to find a new reason/purpose.
● How often do we see or encounter people who are just going through the motions.
● The rinse and repeat of life some days, but there is choice in how we navigate our
approach sometimes.
● I've definitely felt like i've been going through the motions the last few years. This
semester was the first time in a while where I've felt a passion for teaching again
44. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
AM Session
● Talk to others. Just talk. About anything.
● Listen, compassion, and support
● Accepting people (and ourselves) where they are at.
● Set boundaries and honor others' boundaries.
Platinum rule.
● Approaching every day with love and compassion and
kindness for yourself and for others.
● Being present
● Not being afraid of "no."
● Take care of ourselves, first. Always.
● Checking in with each other beyond, "Oh, you still work
here? Haven't seen you on campus."
45. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
PM Session
● Everyone you meet is dealing with a "burden" you know nothing about so be kind
and understanding
● Take stock in what you have and build a better future
● Be present.
● Listen, care and be kind
● Practice gratitude
● Be there for our co workers. Be kind .
● Support others when they set a boundary even if it's "not the answer you wanted
to hear".
● Being open with yourself and others
● Listen and silent have the same letters So really listen to people. Practice
random acts of kindness
● Remind each other to protect work/life balance
● Truly listen more and speak less
● Resisting the urge to respond with toxic positivity (working on this myself!)
● Verbalize gratitude and praise
● Be there and be a supporter. Treat each person as their own person and try to
recognize what each person might appreciate.
● You can't accept others until you accept yourself. The hate that we are seeing in
the world stems from a lack of self-love. Once we recognize that we are all one
people, we will begin to stop seeing people as "others."
