The Effects Of Light Emitting Electronics On The Human...
Ellie Murphy Mrs. Webb Science Fair Research Paper October 6, 2015 Eye can t get to sleep! The
effect of light emitting electronics on the human sleep cycle. Which affects your sleep more: blue
light, books, or doing nothing before bed? Americans on the whole are not getting enough sleep. A
recent study conducted by the CDC determined that, among 74,571 adult respondents in 12 states,
35.3% reported less than 7 hours of sleep during a typical 24 hour period, 37.9% reported
unintentionally falling asleep during the day at least once in the previous month, and 4.7% reported
nodding off or falling asleep while driving at least once in the previous month. (CDC, Par. 4)There are

It is easier for people to get more sleep if they try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the
same time every day. (Williams Carey, Pg. 1, 3) Having good sleep hygiene is important because
when people sleep, bodies can repair themselves. Human bodies repair both physically and
psychologically when they sleep. When a body repairs itself physically, it heals things such as broken
bones and bruises. Furthermore, when the human body repairs itself mentally, it heals things such as
stress and memory loss. Bad sleep behavior and hygiene can lead to sleep decreasing. One way for
sleep to decrease is drinking caffeine or alcohol before bed if they do it will take them forever to fall
asleep. Don t have a heavy meal right before bed, or it will interfere with sleep. Never try to make an
effort to go to sleep because sleep should come naturally to everyone. (Williams Carey, Pg. 3 4) There
are many several different stages of sleep. These stages are called the sleep cycle. During this cycle
people have five measurable stages of sleep, but these can be simplified into just three stages. Stage
one is light sleep. In this stage people drift in and out of sleep and can wake up easily. When in light
sleep, eye movement slows down and muscles relax. If anyone has ever felt the sensation of falling,
this is the stage it happens in. (¨Stages of Sleep¨, Par. 1 2) The brain waves of the

The California Gold Rush Essay
The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush of 1849 is one of the most interesting and exiting events of the United
States. From the wild stories of men striking it big, to the heart wrenching tales of people losing
everything, these are what make it so alluring. There are many aspects of the California Gold Rush;
effects on California; individual stories of struggle; and effects on the United States as a young
country looking for stability.
San Francisco was a small town of a few hundred people in 1840, but by 1850 it was a huge city
whose economy was injected with gold money. This rapid growth and development was brought on by
an accidental discovery by James Marshall. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The economy of California is still a major risk taking economy, as it was back in the days of the Gold
Rush. Computer companies start and go broke everyday in silicon valley, producers spend millions of
dollars on movies, sometimes hitting it big, and other times going bust. California has gained many of
its traits and characteristics from the Gold Rush of 1849, shaping into what it is today.
What effects did the Gold Rush have on people? Some became forever rich, and some lost everything.
In 1849, California was a rather uncivilized place, especially San Francisco. Miner s came from every
where to try to find their fortune, but most fortunes weren t made mining gold, they were made
because of mining. Sam Brannan was one such man who made his fortune this way. Brannan bought
every shovel, pan, and every other mining related tool he could in the region. A twenty cent metal pan
now became a fifteen dollar pan, and the only place to buy them was from Sam Bannan. Levi Strauss,
a tailor who happened to have very popular canvas pants made his fortune from the Gold Rush. Phillip
Armour, of Armour Meat packing company, and John Studebaker just to name a couple more.
Unfortunately, not everybody could get rich, for every one person that struck it big; there were
thousands that didn t. It is not uncommon to hear stories of men leaving their wife, kids and

Middle Childhood and Adolescence Development
Middle childhood development primarily entails growth previous to puberty during early school years;
yet in contrast, adolescence signifies puberty as an inevitable biological change during that period.
These stages of development refine the gradual transformation of psychological, physical, and social
ways that enlighten any life span. This essay thoroughly will examine adolescent development and
include positive and negative consequences of preliminary actions surrounding this time. An
annotation will provide an extensive description of changes during middle childhood and adolescence

Group formations or cliques normally form during middle and high school years. These individual s
biases are normally superficial concerns that divide adolescents into groups of similar qualities such as
intelligence and athletic ability. School systems help in the division of peer groups with school
sponsored clubs but adolescents facilitate the attitude of how the group thinks and behave. (Hansell

Adolescent Egocentrism
Adolescent egocentrism refers to a mental development limited in adolescents by others. Adolescents
are able or are capable to feel when others paying attention to their appearance and behavior. For
example, adolescents spend a significant time making them to look good in front of everybody;
adolescents are too worried about their appearance and behavior. This type of egocentrism is known in
teens between the ages of 11 or 12 years to 16 year old. Adolescents usually create an imaginary
audience in their own self consciousness (Berger, 2008). In many cases, this phase passes overtime,
but understanding, and patience is required throughout this phase. According to Berger (2008), people
focus their eyes on this type of adolescent and the way how they (adolescents) think. That is,

Feminist Facts About Victim Blaming
Victim Blaming Victim blaming can be defined as a devaluing act where the victim of the said crime
is blamed and held partially responsible for the outcome committed against them (Ben David,
Schneider, 2005). As displayed throughout this paper, from historical times to present day there still
manages to be the idea that the victim plays some kind of role in their sexual assault taking place. In
1980 an important study was done that is still relevant today. Brown s study showed the predictive
validity of feminist theoretical ideas about the nature of rape in America. The results show that many
Americans believed in rape myths with attitudes connected to gender role stereotyping (Burt, 1980).
Individuals in the research were asked questions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For males, it is explained that they are always in the mood and therefore, cannot be sexually assaulted
(Ben David, Schneider, 2005). Another popular topic is victim perception. This is the understanding
that only certain types of people are sexually assaulted, additionally the victims must have been asking
for it in regards to what they were wearing or their profession such as prostitution. Lastly, another
example of victim blame is through fabrication, which is the thought that the victim must have lied
and over reacted as women do (Burt, 1980; Davies, 2012). Through recent advancements in the
feminist movement and recent topics of gender equality, it would be assumed that the public believes
less in rape victims today than they were in recent studies. Research from 2010 however, has found
that women are more likely to be evaluated as genuine rape victims under certain conditions: they
attempted to fight back (and have the battle wounds to prove it), they did not have a past history with
the accused, and they are a respectable, meaning they are well liked, are an outstanding student and so
on (Schuller 2010). People tend to evaluate female victims as more blameworthy if their attitudes
violate the specific traditional gender

Partisan Groups In The Holocaust
When someone mentions the Holocaust, the image that come to the minds of most people is that of the
starving Jews in concentration camps. Most people automatically think of the horrors that the Jews
went through, while some may even wonder how something as horrible as the Holocaust could have
been done. Not many people stop to think about how the Jews resisted. Jews resisted in small acts
almost every day. Whether it was something as small as praying or as large as blowing up a supply
train, Jews were able to block the Nazis from completely wiping out the Jewish culture. One particular
group of Jews who resisted were the partisans. The partisans were armed groups formed to fight

One partisan unit in Vilina derailed hundreds of supply trains, killing over three thousand Germans in
the process and making it more difficult for the Germans to fight in the war (USHMM). The partisans
often attacked military outposts and other strategic locations, such as power plants and factories, to
make it harder to make supplies for the war effort, but they never attacked civilians (JPEF). In most
cases, the partisans had the upper hand. They attacked at night when the Nazis were least expecting an
attack and the least amount of people would be hurt, and they knew the lay of the land better than the,
in many cases, foreign Germans (JPEF). Additionally, when the partisans could get information inside
of the Nazi labor camps, Jews on the inside would purposely sabotage weapons that they were
building for the Germans (JPEF). With these small attacks, partisan units were able to limit the
participation of the Nazis in the war, and decrease the damage that they were doing to the Jewish

Anthrax in Bioterrorism Essay
Anthrax in Bioterrorism
As America rises shakily to its feet after September 11th, a man from American Media Inc. breathes in
a funny powder from a letter in his office. Five days later he ís in the hospital, an apparent severe case
of the flu. Two days later, he dies. This man was Bob Stevens, the first in America to die from a
deliberate anthrax attack. Others letters such as this started popping up in major American media
companies [Tom Brokaw at NBC], making the nation terrified to open mail. The man sending these
letters, nicknamed Amerithrax by the FBI, was a bioterrorist a person purposefully causing disease to

didnít stand a balloonís chance in a needle stackÖor so would have been the case had the development
of the atom bomb not come up, and the popularity of bioweapons forgotten. As one could imagine,
Gruinard Island was a mess of death and contamination after testing it was indeed the only
uninhabited place during WWII. The island has only recently been decontaminated [and yes, they used
another hundred sheep to test the safety of the island. All these sheep survived]. The U.S. took another
approach on the homeland at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the 1950ís and ë60s. The top research facility
called themselves the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases,
affectionately known as the Institute. Even after WWII they continued their biological weapon
research for two decades. Their specialty? Anthrax. This is where anthrax was honed down and
refined to its most lethal potential. And, like every great American Research facility, the whole area
had round the clock military security, and every scientist was given a gun to keep in proximity during
all work hours. They stated that, ideally, a hundred grams of dried anthrax could destroy a whole city,
and every gallon could murder every human being on earth. Thankfully, itís not an ideal world, and
the anthrax bomb was not perfected. The Institute continued work on anthrax until 1969,

Corruption of the Nation, the Community, and the Individual
Corruption is the enemy of development, and of good governance. It must be got rid of, says Pratibha
Patil, India s 12th president. Corruption within society hinders its ability to properly function and
affects mankind. While it is in effect, corruption will continue to tarnish society s mores. In Hamlet,
Shakespeare uses the motifs of disease and decay to exhibit that moral corruption destroys society.
When a leader is corrupt, his country is linked to his moral deterioration, thus the state deteriorates as
he does. Hamlet, alone, ponders the current condition of Denmark. After his father has died, his uncle,

Hamlet says that the weeds of this garden are rank and gross . These wild and unwanted plants smell
foul and are repulsive to think of. King Claudius, symbolized by weeds, is wicked and dishonest to the
people of Denmark; his dishonesty will socially mutilate his state. The audience soon recognizes the
prominent effect of Claudius corruption when mysterious events occur in Denmark. After seeing the
ghost of Old Hamlet, Marcellus tells Horatio that there is something amiss in Denmark. He says,
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (I.v.100). The word rotten is associated with
decomposition; thus when Horatio describes this defect as rotten , he demonstrates that there is a
disease that is deteriorating Denmark from the inside out. This corrupt something that Horatio speaks
of has transpired out of Claudius rise to power. Since Claudius has become king, the natural order of
Denmark has disrupted; the dead are among the living Old Hamlet s ghost lurks. As long as Claudius

Creating two people equal one is the economist and the other is the environmentalist, persevering
together to make this a better sustained world, for every human to live life to the fullest. The
economist is in charge of the production and consumption of the area, explaining the wants and needs.
Thinking of the bigger picture, everything is production and consumption. Plants use nutrients from
the ground and sunlight to give off oxygen, which we inhale to live. Animals eat nutrients, so we as a
society can eat them. Farmers clear fields to grow crops for us to stay healthy with vegetables and
fruits. The economist parameters are the gross domestic product, trade balance, and competitive index
(Wilson 29). Meaning the economist would pair with the environmentalist to make and sustain a better
living headquarters for us to thrive as a planet. The environmentalist job would be such to work with
ecosystems, crop fields and water supplies. The environmentalist would make sure crops are
functioning correctly. Having our wildlife in check and to not have overpopulated species running
wild. Taking control of our water sources, and will serve very well for now and in the future. Most
important job of the two, economist and environmentalist is make sure we have the resources for
living on planet earth. This would not stop the overpopulation era that we are experiencing right now
throughout the world. Yet it would help us be more prepared to where when we do reach the

United Law Of Public International Law
Report to International Law First concerning the fear that the concept of state sovereignty in public
international law is frequently overlooked by politicians, the media and others. Introduction.
International Law First has asked for a report concerning the impact of public international law on the
concept of state sovereignty in the UK. This report will examine the limits that public international
law imposes on state sovereignty and the effect that this has on the balance of power within the UK
and internationally. This report will explain how state sovereignty is impacted by public international
law and the way in which public international law is incorporated into the UK s domestic law. A
conclusion will be reached as to the level of impact that public international law has on the UK s state
sovereignty and the necessity of this impact for the successful functioning of the UK within the
international community. Incorporation of public international law into UK domestic law. Unlike
many European states the UK operates a dualist approach to the incorporation of public international
law into domestic law. In dualist systems the ratification of international treaties by the government
does not have any effect on domestic law until the treaties are given effect by further legislation. In the
light of a dualist approach UK laws can only be created by Acts of Parliament. Furthermore, the
Constitutional Reform Act 2010 introduced legislation enabling Parliament to

As of 2014, NetSuite was a leading provider of cloud based financial and enterprise resource planning,
as well as omnichannel commerce software. Cloud based computing uses the internet to deliver
applications and software companies from a remote server. By doing this, companies were able to
eliminate the cost of installing and maintaining infrastructure used to store these applications and
other services. NetSuite would typically charge a subscription fee for a pre arranged amount of time.

These services are licensed for a much shorter period of time, monthly, quarterly, or annually, so there
is a much lower cost of switching between services. These services generate the actual revenue through
direct and indirect methods with almost all sales conducted over the phone. The direct sales are a
product of direct contact with medium sized companies or units of larger companies while the indirect

was affordable to mid sized companies and sufficiently differentiated from competitors products. The

Eight Hour Workdays Are Sufficient
I do not think they should change the law from an eight hour workday to six hour workdays. Everyone
is used to their usual 9 5 jobs(or whatever it may be). It has been the normal routine for years. If you
don t want to work a full 40 hour job then you should have a part time job.
If workers could get all of the work done in the six hour shift then there should be no need for
overtime. I understand the issue of getting hours cut but, it is a plus for all workers to have more time
to spend doing what they want on their free time . Companies should be willing to give the option of

The Bungalow Craze in the US
The Bungalow Craze The bungalow style was a major influence in the drastic change of American
society and how people lived. It influenced a major shift in gender role of women in society, creating
easier housekeeping techniques and greater employment and career opportunities for women by
confronting economic and social issues in society using domestic architecture. The simpler home
design expressed many tensions of Progressivism in attempting to solve social issues of the time. The
transformation brought about new ideas as well as fears that had to be confronted. The spread of
factories from the industrial age left anxiety concerning the loss of independence and masculinity. The
middle class population was becoming salaried workers, loosing economic and moral independence.
The Progressive Era had created a deep desire to reshape institutions and values as well as faith to
reform the people. At the same time, the Arts and Crafts Movement grew in response to the spread of
factories. It drew inspiration from John Rustic, an Oxford artist, who believed that machines were
robbing people of the creativity and pleasure of work situations. The bungalow design was influenced
by a variety of social and economic trends that expanded the middle class and became a powerful
means of transformation in American society. Arts and Crafts promoters associated the bungalow
design with creative manual work, independence, and a way to return to manhood of common work
practices. The bungalow

The Definition Of Tradition In Federico Garcia Lorca s...
The definition of tradition is an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or
behavior ( Tradition ). Tradition is the quiet force that lies behind people s choices in society. Whether
they know it or not, they tend to follow certain traditions unquestionably. As stated in its definition,
tradition can be inherited. The influence of inherited tradition can be seen Federico Garcia Lorca s
Blood Wedding. This play is set in Spain during the 1920 s. It follows the story of an unhappy bride at
her wedding, where her mysterious past lover showing up at the festivities. When the bride and her
past lover run away together, her husband, Bridegroom, follows. This all culminates to a bloody
ending, as the play is aptly named. Through an analysis of the characters actions in Blood Wedding, it
becomes clear that when tradition is unquestionably followed, it has a powerful negative influence on
an individual s choices. It can be seen that the confining bonds of tradition cause Bride and Leonardo
to run away together, only to be thwarted. After they escape, Leonardo confronts Bride after she tries
to deny her part in their escape, asking Who led the way down the stairs? (Lorca 58). After she admits
it was her, Leonardo asks a follow up question, Who put a new bridle on the horse? (Lorca 58). Bride
then again answers that it was her. It is clear that Bride is the one who initiated the escape from the
wedding as she confirms that she was the one who led Leonardo away. This shows just how desperate
Bride is to be free of the suffocating bonds of tradition. She does not want a future with Bridegroom,
she only wishes to follow her heart, which is with Leonardo. The bride s heart is truly with Leonardo,
and tradition has prevented her from having the life that she really wants. The bride and Leonardo try
to break tradition, only to meet a grim fate. The fate of Leonardo is confirmed by First Girl who is
standing in the doorway, after the climax of the story when she says, The lover is speechless./ The
groom is red./ On the bank if the river/ I saw them lying (64). In this line of dialogue, it becomes clear
that tradition is strong within this society, and it is impossible to escape. Leonardo

Bikram Yoga and Body Fitness
Body fitness is a state asserted to be highly essential in ensuring healthy living. It often realized
through regular physical exercises. Yoga is a technique that may be deemed an old means of working
out however recently most people adopt its use in as a way of ensuring they stay fit and in shape. For
instance, most sports personalities have added yoga to their working out strategies. Similarly actors
use the work out approach to ensure they stay in shape. These factors along with my other yoga
experiences have had me acknowledge the essence of Yoga as perceived by the diverse individuals.
On Sunday April 13, 2014 , I attended Bikram Yoga class for my yoga exercises known as hot yoga in
Bikram yoga Montreal from 5:00pm to around 6:45 pm. This session turned out to be an intense form
of yoga practice because of the high heat .Initially, what I knew of yoga was that it was only essential
in ensuring physical fitness. However attending the Bikram yoga class profoundly changed how I
view and understand yoga. Bikram yoga is done in an environment of a humidity of 40% with a
temperature of close to 42 C degrees . During this session, an individual is expected to shed off any
heavy clothing and let the heat rise until they feel it is hot enough. I saw the instructor turn on the fans
sometimes but I didn t feel it. I was wearing long sleeves so I felt very hot and a bit dizzy; we couldn t
drink water unless the instructor allowed us. The primary factors

majority of the Greek women s duties were to have children, ideally males, and to run the household.

The Psychology Of Addictions Of Freud And Halsted
Addictions are when a person cannot control their actions or urges when dealing with the object of
their addiction.
Addictions are sometimes formed from habits. For example, if you take a drug for a medical condition
then you may develop an addiction to the drug.
Sigmund Freud, born 1856 and William Halsted, born 1852, are considered two main contributors to
the psychology of addictions. The 1880s is when Freud and Halsted s experimentation with cocaine
started, as they were unaware that cocaine is extremely addictive, they became addicted to it
themselves.
One of the effects of being addicted to something is tolerance. Tolerance occurs when, after some time

Essay About Zeus
Zeus was considered the god of gods. He had rule over the skies, thunder, lightning, hospitality, honor,
kingship and order. He was represented by thunderbolts, oak trees and a set of scales. Physically, he
was said to be strong and he carried a thunderbolt with him. He was depicted as wise and fair but was
also considered short tempered and carefree. He had many affairs during his marriage to Hera. He was
the last child of the Titans Rhea and Cronus. His siblings included Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera and
Demeter. One myth that concerned Zeus would be the story of how bees acquired their stingers. It was
said that Zeus was asked by a bee to give the bees stingers so that they could protect themselves from
humans. Zeus agreed to give them stingers, but the tradeoff was that after a bee used its stinger, it
would die. This myth taught the lesson not to pray for evil.
Poseidon was the god of the sea. He also had rule over earthquakes, storms and horses and his
symbols included the trident, fish, horses, bulls and dolphins. He was said to be bad tempered and

Essay on The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule
The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule
The December of 1991 marked the end of the Soviet Union and with it, an entire era. Like the
February Revolution of 1917 that ended tsardom, the events leading up to August 1991 took place in
rapid succession, with both spontaneity and, to some degree, retrospective inevitability. To understand
the demise of Soviet Union is to understand the communist party state system itself. Although the
particular happenings of the Gorbachev years undoubtedly accelerated its ruin, there existed
fundamental flaws within the Soviet system that would be had been proven ultimately fatal. The
USSR became a past chapter of history because it was impossible to significantly reform the

Mikhail Gorbachev, the new General Secretariat in 1985, seemed to represent this new generation of
power. After two decades of decaying social and economical conditions, it was clear that restructuring
of governmental policies were in dire need. As it was the only legal party allowed in the USSR until
the repeal of Article Six of the Constitution in 1990, the Communist Party, although conceptualized as
a homogenous dictating organization, had long harbored many variants of ideologies. The leadership
of Gorbachev was an accumulated manifestation of the reformist wing within the ruling elites. Such a
wing had always existed despite hard partiinost, and to Strayer they were the alternative tradition
which saw Leninism and democracy, the plan and the market, as compatible with each other (Strayer,
87). Gorbachev was a student of Khrushchev s thaw who moved much more skillfully than his
ideological predecessor at pushing for real reforms reforms that eventually destroyed the system they
were supposed to save in a great stroke of irony.
However, it is true that Gorbachev did not fully comprehend the significance nor foresee the ultimate
effect of his reforms. An evolutionary leader who saw the pressing flaws of the old system, he
genuinely believed in and pushed for a workable model of socialism based on the Soviet experience
and within the existed framework of the party state. As the reforms went further and deeper, however,

Johannes Brahms Essays
Johannes Brahms was a German Composer, Pianist and conductor of the 19th century or the Romantic
period. He was one of the 3 B?s or the Big three: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Johannes was a very
self critic man he burned many of his pieces before he could get anyone?s opinion on them and he
burned all of his compositions that he wrote before the age of 19.
Johannes Brahms was born on Tuesday 7th may 1833, in the city of Hamburg the birthplace also of
Mendelssohn. Johann Brahms was himself a musician, and played the double bass for a time at the
Karl Schultze Theatre, and later in the Stadttheater orchestra. In 1847 Johannes attended a good

he remained for a number of years.
When he was eleven years of age Johannes made his first appearance as a pianist [at a private

About the age of twelve he came entirely under the tuition of Marxsen, who, finding him incorrigible
in his desire to improve compositions at the piano, soon began to teach him theory. But in order to be
able to continue these lessons, it was imperative that he should earn at least part of his keep at home,
where funds were always distressingly low, thus before he was fourteen he was obliged, for want of a
more congenial occupation, to play the piano at sailor?s taverns and dancing saloons, often very late at
night and always in a far from healthy atmosphere.
On his return to Hamburg he ventured, on 21st September 1848, to give a concert on his own account

Reflection On Group Discussion During Micro Teaching Session
Appendix 2 Reflection on Group Discussion during Micro Teaching Session
Reflection
I wished to simply try Brookfield and Preskill s concepts of group discussion, to see what I could tease
out from 10 minute Micro Teaching Session about Communicating with people with Autism Spectrum
Conditions . It was a task which had limitations but also great results as it led to me to distinctly
recognise what actions I needed to take when I embark on the next opportunity to use discussion in a

practice, I thought I had abandoned the nine dispositions, but later I began to note that other
dispositions were in fact in play. I was simply not paying attention, being mindful. I had externalised
the demonstration of the dispositions as if they going to be flagged by my conscience and lost the

Dispositions that were less prevalent were the ones that would help me slow down, talk less and infuse

when cigs = 20 is bwght in predicted birthweight due to smoking an extra packet of cigarettes per day
during pregnancy is 333.14 grams (approx. one third of a kilogram). To help gauge whether this
difference is practically large or small, this amount corresponds to 333.14 = 0.0965 (or 9.65%) of
average child birthweight in the sample. The 3450.7 magnitude of this is effect is practically large. (6)
Does cigs explain most of the variation in bwght ? Does the model in (1) provide a good explanation

Major Problems For The Livestock Industry Throughout The...
Introduction
Babesia parasites are obligate intraerythrocytic protozoa capable of invading a wide range of
vertebrate hosts, subsequently leading to serious economic problems for the livestock industry
throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Homer et al., 2000;
Uilenberg, 2006). Bovine babesiosis is mainly caused by two species of bovine intraerythrocytic
protozoan parasites, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina. Infected animals in an acute stage have
symptoms of fever, anemia, hemoglobinuria, and sometimes resulting in death. In contrast, those in
chronic stages may become chronic carriers without clinical signs. Human and rodent babesiosis
caused by Babesia microti has emerged as a life threatening zoonosis in the world (Kjemtrup and
Conrad, 2000). Although infection usually is asymptomatic, immunocompromised and elder people
develop mild to moderate fever, headache, body aches, fatigue, and anorexia. Importantly, B. microti
has been used as an experimental model for studying novel chemotherapy (Aboulaila et al., 2012) and
host immune responses, the understanding of which is a prerequisite for developing an effective
vaccine against
Babesia parasites (Yokoyama et al., 2003).
Although several attempts have been made to develop a vaccine against babesiosis, no vaccine has yet
proven to be completely effective in preventing Babesia infection. Attenuated live vaccines lead to
significant decreases in mortality; however, they do not prevent the infection or

Farming Is The Nation s Most Important And Noblest...
When you think about farming what comes to mind? Do you think about older gentlemen on tractors,
or young boys helping there father feed the family herd. Maybe you even think about thousands of
acres of corn land in Iowa. Whatever it is I can assure you farming is the nation s most important and
noblest profession. Today farming is seen as a dangerous profession, that s not necessarily the case, it
is true that many people are injured and even killed on farms each year. In 2012 alone three hundred
and seventy four farmers and farm workers lost there lives due to work related injuries, and every day
a staggering one hundred and sixty seven agriculture workers suffer a work related injury (CDC
2012). But why so many? The simple answer is that when it comes to farm safety many people are
ignorant. I myself am guilty of not using the proper safety equipment or even removing a safety shield
to make things run more efficient. I think we have it hardwired in our brains that bad things only
happen to other people, and nothing bad could happen to ourselves, that s not the case. I think that if
farmers will take the time to slow down and be more careful and think things through we will cut
down drastically on injuries. If you think about it many farmers are constantly stressed, they simply
don t have enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks at hand so they begin to rush which
causes shortcuts to be made which can potentially lead to injury or death.

Difference Between Nation And State
Professor Now, we re all familiar, I think, with the United Nations organization, and we re very
accustomed to a world divided into nations but many of you may not realize how recent the idea of the
nation state really is. Most of the history of civilization s been a history of much smaller units from
primitive tribes to Greek city states and later of the much larger units usually called empires. The
concept of a political and cultural nation, as we know it today, didn t appear until near the end of the
18th century, at the time of the French and American Revolutions. Let s look at a couple of terms first,
just to make them clear. Strictly speaking, a nation is a cultural concept a group of people in a

So maybe we d better take a more careful look at the factors that seem to contribute to the idea of
nation statehood . First, geography is an obvious factor. Countries like Japan and New Zealand have
very clear boundaries, and their physical isolation makes these nations very homogeneous. However,
geography is often irrelevant Ireland and Cyprus are certainly very strongly divided islands. And many
countries, notably African countries, have boundaries that have nothing to do with natural features or
ethnicity or anything else. They are simply straight lines drawn in the last century by former colonial
powers. Is there a question?
Student Yes! Isn t the language also a determining factor?
Professor Indeed! And then there s language, which is also used as a rationale for nationhood. The
United States and Germany and France are all large, successful states that are defined mostly by
language. But on one hand, many international boundaries cut directly across language lines, as with
Belgium and The Netherlands while on the other hand, countries like South Africa and India include
speakers of many different languages. And a common ethnicity that is, a common genetic background
and a common cultural heritage have certainly helped determine the identity of many nation states.

The two sides of this argument can be roughly boiled down to two words: environment and economy.
In such turbulent times can Americans afford to pass up a so called shovel ready project that would

My Experience Of Swimming
Swimming demands nothing short of perfection.

In a field of 8 swimmers, the number 8 flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears welled up in

I hated that part of Swimming. It washed away hours and years of work and sacrifices, dashed the big

In the story Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone? the author has created multiple themes or
ways to interpret the purpose behind the story. Lam says, She turns 70 but she remains a vivacious
woman her hair is still mostly black, there is still a girlish twang in her laughter, and her eyes twinkle
at the telling of a joke (Lam). The way the author speaks about Mrs. Lam, using such vivid language
shows that he takes time to appreciate the person she is and how she lights the room up. Showing so

Vietnam is very much relevant to this story because of the fact that Lam s mother brings over
Vietnamese traditions in hope that her children will continue to carry on their her legacy. According to
the who will light incense when mothers gone? , Lam create the idea of Vietnams identity by saying,
mumbles solemn prayers to the spirits of our dead ancestors, and to the all compassionate Buddha.
Here he is explaining a Vietnam tradition his mother practiced as a daily routine, asking for protection
of her children and that they shall thrive in America. Between the family moving to America and the
mother asking of her God for her kids to prosper in America, this tells readers that the education
system or dreams for a good career probably are not as advantageous as the opportunities in America.
One of the biggest challenges in the Vietnam school system is that if a student has a question about
something, they are not allowed to address the instructor unless called upon. If the student never gets
called upon the student must than go back through the notes they took during class and find the
answer. But what if the notes were not written down correctly? Than that student has just answered the
question on the next test incorrectly because of inadequate communication of the school system. How
is a Vietnam student supposed to have a reasonable career if the countries school system is failing
them. However, just as the Lam family has done, moving to America will allow a strong and more

argument elaborating their notion of the validity of America s unique mission. However, I am inclined
to agree with Professor McClay in his assertion in the mythical nature of American exceptionalism
that has promoted social cohesiveness and propelled America as the beacon of liberty and democracy
(McKenna Feingold 2011, 14). The existence of present day America developed after a period of
empirical practices that allowed us to incorporate the positive qualities of democracy and make note of
the negative aspects of wrongfully enforcing democratic ideals internationally (McKenna Feingold
2011). Since our inception, the invisible hand of divine providence has directed America to propagate
freedom and democracy to all peoples of the world (McKenna Feingold 2011, 2 3). The majority of

Essay on Sexual Selection
Sexual selection was an idea proposed by Darwin and refers to the process in which males and
females attempt to maximize their chances of reproductive success. Within a species there are certain
characteristics that make individuals attractive to potential mates. An example of this is in peacocks,
female peacocks are attracted to males with long brightly colored tails, even though this makes them
easier to be spotted by predators. This characteristic then evolves within the species due to how males
with this characteristic have a higher chance of reproductive success and their characteristics being
passed on to surviving offspring.
There are 2 types of sexual selection. Intersexual selection takes place when males compete for the ...

Clark and Hatfield helped support this by getting female and male experiments to ask male and female
participants if they would like to engage in casual sex. 75% of males said yes while every female
participant said no. This helps support the sexual selection theory as it shows that females have to be
more careful with mating as they only have a limited amount of opportunities therefore are more
likely to enter a longterm mating strategy. Males can have casual sex with little investment so are
more likely to then females. This study helps to show the gender differences.
Much of the research documenting sex differences in mate choice focus on preferences rather than on
real life choices. So a male may have a preference but may have to settle for much less.
Mate choice is a product of mate preferences form in the environment of evolutionary adaptiveness
(EEA). Sexual selection suggests that females prefer males who they can gain benefits from such as
gifts. This is shown in male birds who make nests for females in order to mate with them and also in
insects who give nuptial gifts.
Sexual selection also suggests that females prefer males who have a strong jawline and prominent
cheekbones. These characteristics arise because of a strong presence of testosterone which also helps

The Use Of Strange Places In slade House And Jordan...
Title: The Use of Strange Places in David Mitchell s Slade House and Jordan Peele s Get Out
Published in 2015, Slade House is a horror mystery written by David Mitchell. While their storylines
are quite different, the book has many similar fear inducing tactics used in Jordan Peele s Get Out. The
methods used in these two stories are what University of York professor, John Bowen would classify
as gothic motifs. These motifs break down into groups he has labeled as clashing time periods , power
and constraint , terror versus horror , a world of doubt , and strange places (Bowen). In particular,
professor Bowen describes strange places in gothic fiction as somewhere other, different, and,
mysterious (Bowen). He also claims that they are, often threatening or violent, sometimes sexually
enticing, and, often a prison (Bowen). The novel, Slade House and the film, Get Out are both
considered Gothic text because they contain the crucial aspects of the strange places motif.
The places in Slade House are strange because they lack consistency. The author, David Mitchell, first
introduces the motif immediately when Nathan Bishop and his mother Rita, arrive in Slade Alley.
Nathan himself describes the alley as somewhere a tramp might live in a cardboard box (Mitchell 6).
Slade House itself is a strange place because it is an expansive plot of land located in a small alley
way. It is not possible that such a place could fit where it is and each of the four protagonists

International Business And Management Of A Multinational...
Introduction
As the threshold of conducting business in foreign country becomes lower, it has been appealing to
turn a local company into a multinational corporation. By leveraging and gathering resources from
global platform, company will make leaping progress not only on profit, but also on brand building.
However, the moment a company begins to consider paving its way into foreign markets and goes
globally, it needs to take into consideration various kinds of transaction expenditure that rose in
trading. Therefore, it has been critical for company executives to understand and utilize the
Transaction Cost Theory (TCT) in order to find the most suitable method for company to supervise
and minimize the transaction costs. Through analysis into TCT, one can have a deep comprehension
on the extension of how multinational companies depend on each other, and how to choose between
centralized inner supervision (within company) and outer surveillance (market) so as to diminish
transaction costs.
This paper analyzes the reasons that lead to transaction costs, what is the meaning and how to apply
TCT in international business and management endeavor. Even though TCT is a renowned theory, it
still needs revision and enhancement. However, scholars put widely different perspectives on to TCT
theory scattering into diverse subjects, making the theory unable to receive progress as a whole.

Case Analysis Of The Clean Water System
Summary:
The petitioner, Los Angeles County Flood Control District (District), controls a municipal separate
store sewer system, also known as MS4, which was discharging polluted storm water into four rivers
(Los Angeles River, San Gabriel River, Santa Clara River and Malibu Creek) that exceeded pollutant
standards into navigable waters beginning 2002 or 2003. The MS4 is a system of conveyances that is
designed to collect polluted storm water and discharge the water into navigable waters. It is not a
combined sewer or a part of a sewage treatment plant. MS4 operates are required by the Clean Water
Act (CWA) to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination system (NPDES) permit before
discharging water. The respondents, Natural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The data from the stations allowed the Ninth Court of Appeals to hold the District liable for the Los
Angeles and San Gabriel rivers.
On June 25, 2012, the Supreme Court granted review of the case only to answer the following
question: Under the CWA, does a discharge of pollutants occur when polluted water flows from one
portion of a river that is navigable water of the United States, through a concrete channel or other
engineered improvement in the river, and then into a lower portion of the same river? . Using the S.
Fla. Water Mgmt. Dist. v. Miccosukee case, they answered with the following statement; pumping
polluted water from one part of a water body into another part of the same body is not a discharge of
pollutants under the CWA. For the reasons stated above, the supreme court reversed and remanded the
case.
Analysis:
The main issue of the case was that the Los Angeles County Flood Control District allowed storm
water runoff that exceeded pollutant levels to discharge into rivers that flows into the ocean. The case
mainly focuses on defining the Clean Water Act,

Rise and fall of the First Persian Empire The First Persian Empire, also known as the Achaemenid
Persian Empire, rose because of it s king s political genius and ability to restructure society, prospered
because of leading economic and technological advances, and fell due to a successor s cruelness that
caused provincial revolts, economic disparity, and the breaking down of what was once one of the
most successful social systems. The First Persian Empire rose under the leadership of Cyrus the Great,
who was also known as Cyrus the Elder to the Greeks. Cyrus came to power in the year 559 BC, when
his father, Cambyses I, died. His political genius came at a young age when he started learning ...

Distinctively Visual Analysis Painting
There are a lot of factors in this painting that suggest the woman is the main subject of the painting.
One of them is where the woman is placed in the painting, which is directly in the middle of the
painting. The three men surrounding the woman are positioned in a way that they almost create lines
pointing towards the woman. This automatically causes our eyes to shift on to the women in the
middle. The woman is also the only one facing the audience directly with her face fully shown as
oppose to the rest who only have half their faces.
The highlights and shadows in the painting also plays a part in suggesting that the woman is the main
subject of the painting. Strong contrast between the middle area of the painting and the sides can be
seen. This creates further emphasis on the woman as the light enable us to see most of the features on
her face highlighted as compared to the rest. This creates an effect as if the light is directly on her. ...

woman, on the other hand, is shown without much covering her red robe and the light, that seems to

Analysis Of Frances Burney s The Perfect Definition Of...
Frances Burney was born in a time where women were treated differently from men and expected to
marry as soon as possible. Evelina, a book published in 1778, portrays a character with the same name
who experiences stages in her life before finally becoming a lady in personality and title. In Evelina,
Burney presents the treatment of different women within a male dominated society.
The ideal woman was often presented as a delicate object that depended on a man. In the novel, the
perfect definition of a lady by the standards of that time is none other than Lord Orville s younger
sister Lady Louisa. When Lady Louisa is seen at Mrs. Beaumont s home, Evelina notices that she is
wobbling rather walking into a room and that her voice [spoke] so softly she could hardly be heard .
This demonstrates her extreme femininity for being very weak and fragile to the point that she is
quickly fatigued to death (410). Moreover, another example was Mrs. Mirvan in the first volume who
was a kind and sweet tempered woman (132). Like a true lady of that time, she was highly dependent
on a man and so she was often charged to healing those wounds which her husband s inflicts (150).
Yet, Lady Louisa still remains as the main example of a real lady due to her behavior. She was easily
tired, enjoyed having the attention on her and associated herself solely with those who were of her
class. Sir Clement Willoughby also presents his own impression of her Ladyship: she is a mere
compound of

Essay on Corporal Punishment
The deciding factor in the future of corporal punishment is seen in the Ingraham v. Wright Supreme
Court case. In 1970, James Ingraham, an eighth grade student of Drew Junior High School was one of
the many beneficiaries of corporal punishment distributed by Willie Wright, the principal of the high
school. The rationality behind Ingraham s punishment was that he was slow to respond to his teacher
instructions. As a result, his teacher sent him to the principal office where he bent over the table was
given twenty licks with a paddle. The paddling was so severe, according to the Ingraham s doctor, he
needed to miss weeks of school due to hematoma on his buttocks. Defined by Merriam Webster, a
hematoma is clotted blood that forms in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He continues to say, this can develop to be too expensive and time consuming and that the country is
split on this issue... yet we can discern no trend towards the elimination of corporal punishment by
making it so costly (Hyman and Wise, 1979, p. 184).
After a losing battle Ingraham faced, both in the U.S. and State Supreme Court, Principal Wright and
his colleagues around the country were able to continue in practicing physical discipline, even with
the new added uncertainty surrounding it. This case increased the awareness of corporal punishment in
Florida and around the country, especially extreme where this level of discipline was displayed in
schools. As seen in this trial, the collaborative effort by the justice departments and their want to stay
out of state based issues, sided with the Florida law and educational system because they believed that
the actions toward Ingraham and Andrews were justifiable on the basis that they were in school and
because educators performed the punishment. Questions that I have developed. The first question is
why? Why did the teacher not reprimand the student? Why make the student miss any class time
because he did not respond? Why punish a student because you feel that the student is not going to be
late for class? Were we not taught that late is better than never? More specifically,

Taking a look at Eastlink
Eastlink was aimed to connect the eastern north south region; it connects the eastern freeway to
Frankston freeway. The land of the toll road was set aside by the government in 1960 to and in 2002
the project was officially accepted in policy.[ K. Wellman, Marcus Spiller, 2012. Urban Infrastructure:
Finance and Management]
By providing 39 Km of motorway, Eastlink allows citizens to travel along the eastern region and save
time by bypassing 45 traffic lights. It also carries a great amount of traffic; therefore, it creates more
jobs and economical boost. Eastlink created approximately 15 billion boost to the economy and 1400
employment opportunities were generated during its construction and operation.[ Greeman,
A.G,Eastlink: motorway Masterpiece]
Reducing traffic congestion and attracting population to the eastern region were two key objectives of
the project. It was aimed to serve as the main transportation artery of the eastern zone.
Table below shows how traffic on certain roads was influenced after operation of Eastlink.
Road Traffic revolution
Springvale Road Decreased 20%
Bulleen Road Increased 13%
Park Road Decreased 13%
Doncaster Road Decreased 11%
Reynolds Road Decreased 2% [City of Manningham, traffic report on the effects, alterations and

Joshua
Moses said to Joshua, Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will
stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands. Exodus 17:9
This is the first passage of scripture where you find Joshua. There is a law called the law of first
mention. The law of first mention is a principle that requires one to take a fraction of Scriptures where
a principle, expression, or act is mentioned for the first time, in the Bible, and to study the first
occurrence of this in order to get the fundamental inbuilt meaning of that principle, expression, or act.
When this law is applied the simple meaning usually goes before the complex. Throughout the history

1845-1991 The Nature Of Warfare
The nature of warfare refers to; the duration of a war, the intensity, the experience of those involved
and the arrangement and structure of both the forces and war itself. Over the period of 1845 1991 the
nature of warfare undoubtedly evolved due to many aspects and factors. One of the notable
developments during this period was the transformation of technology and the role it played in war.
However, one must question whether it was the role of technology alone that changed warfare or if
other factors were equally influential, these include; economic power, strategies and tactics,
leadership, organisation and public attitudes. Following the Industrial Revolution which acted as a
catalyst for the mass production of new weaponry, the 19th

The effect of light emitting electronics on the human sleep cycle. Which affects your sleep more: blue light, books, or doing nothing before bed? Americans on the whole are not getting enough sleep. A recent study conducted by the CDC determined that, among 74,571 adult respondents in 12 states, 35.3% reported less than 7 hours of sleep during a typical 24 hour period, 37.9% reported unintentionally falling asleep during the day at least once in the previous month, and 4.7% reported nodding off or falling asleep while driving at least once in the previous month. It is easier for people to get more sleep if they try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. (Williams Carey, Pg. 1, 3) Having good sleep hygiene is important because when people sleep, bodies can repair themselves. Human bodies repair both physically and psychologically when they sleep. When a body repairs itself physically, it heals things such as broken bones and bruises. Furthermore, when the human body repairs itself mentally, it heals things such as stress and memory loss. Bad sleep behavior and hygiene can lead to sleep decreasing. One way for sleep to decrease is drinking caffeine or alcohol before bed if they do it will take them forever to fall asleep. Don t have a heavy meal right before bed, or it will interfere with sleep. Never try to make an effort to go to sleep because sleep should come naturally to everyone. (Williams Carey, Pg. 3 4) There are many several different stages of sleep. These stages are called the sleep cycle. During this cycle people have five measurable stages of sleep, but these can be simplified into just three stages. Stage one is light sleep. In this stage people drift in and out of sleep and can wake up easily. When in light sleep, eye movement slows down and muscles relax. If anyone has ever felt the sensation of falling, this is the stage it happens in. (¨Stages of Sleep¨, Par. 1 2) The brain waves of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The California Gold Rush Essay The California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush of 1849 is one of the most interesting and exiting events of the United States. From the wild stories of men striking it big, to the heart wrenching tales of people losing everything, these are what make it so alluring. There are many aspects of the California Gold Rush; effects on California; individual stories of struggle; and effects on the United States as a young country looking for stability. San Francisco was a small town of a few hundred people in 1840, but by 1850 it was a huge city whose economy was injected with gold money. This rapid growth and development was brought on by an accidental discovery by James Marshall. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The economy of California is still a major risk taking economy, as it was back in the days of the Gold Rush. Computer companies start and go broke everyday in silicon valley, producers spend millions of dollars on movies, sometimes hitting it big, and other times going bust. California has gained many of its traits and characteristics from the Gold Rush of 1849, shaping into what it is today. What effects did the Gold Rush have on people? Some became forever rich, and some lost everything. In 1849, California was a rather uncivilized place, especially San Francisco. Miner s came from every where to try to find their fortune, but most fortunes weren t made mining gold, they were made because of mining. Sam Brannan was one such man who made his fortune this way. Brannan bought every shovel, pan, and every other mining related tool he could in the region. A twenty cent metal pan now became a fifteen dollar pan, and the only place to buy them was from Sam Bannan. Levi Strauss, a tailor who happened to have very popular canvas pants made his fortune from the Gold Rush. Phillip Armour, of Armour Meat packing company, and John Studebaker just to name a couple more. Unfortunately, not everybody could get rich, for every one person that struck it big; there were thousands that didn t. It is not uncommon to hear stories of men leaving their wife, kids and ... Feminist Facts About Victim Blaming Victim Blaming Victim blaming can be defined as a devaluing act where the victim of the said crime is blamed and held partially responsible for the outcome committed against them (Ben David, Schneider, 2005). As displayed throughout this paper, from historical times to present day there still manages to be the idea that the victim plays some kind of role in their sexual assault taking place. In 1980 an important study was done that is still relevant today. Brown s study showed the predictive validity of feminist theoretical ideas about the nature of rape in America. Another popular topic is victim perception. This is the understanding that only certain types of people are sexually assaulted, additionally the victims must have been asking for it in regards to what they were wearing or their profession such as prostitution. Lastly, another example of victim blame is through fabrication, which is the thought that the victim must have lied and over reacted as women do (Burt, 1980; Davies, 2012). Through recent advancements in the feminist movement and recent topics of gender equality, it would be assumed that the public believes less in rape victims today than they were in recent studies. Research from 2010 however, has found that women are more likely to be evaluated as genuine rape victims under certain conditions: they attempted to fight back (and have the battle wounds to prove it), they did not have a past history with the accused, and they are a respectable, meaning they are well liked, are an outstanding student and so on (Schuller 2010). Most people automatically think of the horrors that the Jews went through, while some may even wonder how something as horrible as the Holocaust could have been done. Not many people stop to think about how the Jews resisted. Jews resisted in small acts almost every day. Whether it was something as small as praying or as large as blowing up a supply train, Jews were able to block the Nazis from completely wiping out the Jewish culture. In most cases, the partisans had the upper hand. They attacked at night when the Nazis were least expecting an attack and the least amount of people would be hurt, and they knew the lay of the land better than the, in many cases, foreign Germans (JPEF). Additionally, when the partisans could get information inside of the Nazi labor camps, Jews on the inside would purposely sabotage weapons that they were building for the Germans (JPEF). United Law Of Public International Law Report to International Law First concerning the fear that the concept of state sovereignty in public international law is frequently overlooked by politicians, the media and others. Introduction. International Law First has asked for a report concerning the impact of public international law on the concept of state sovereignty in the UK. This report will examine the limits that public international law imposes on state sovereignty and the effect that this has on the balance of power within the UK and internationally. This report will explain how state sovereignty is impacted by public international law and the way in which public international law is incorporated into the UK s domestic law. A conclusion will be reached as to the level of impact that public international law has on the UK s state sovereignty and the necessity of this impact for the successful functioning of the UK within the international community. Incorporation of public international law into UK domestic law. Unlike many European states the UK operates a dualist approach to the incorporation of public international law into domestic law. In dualist systems the ratification of international treaties by the government does not have any effect on domestic law until the treaties are given effect by further legislation. • 15. Why The Eight Hour Workdays Are Sufficient Eight Hour Workdays Are Sufficient I do not think they should change the law from an eight hour workday to six hour workdays. Everyone is used to their usual 9 5 jobs(or whatever it may be). It has been the normal routine for years. If you don t want to work a full 40 hour job then you should have a part time job. If workers could get all of the work done in the six hour shift then there should be no need for overtime. I understand the issue of getting hours cut but, it is a plus for all workers to have more time to spend doing what they want on their free time . • 16. The Bungalow Craze in the US The Bungalow Craze The bungalow style was a major influence in the drastic change of American society and how people lived. It influenced a major shift in gender role of women in society, creating easier housekeeping techniques and greater employment and career opportunities for women by confronting economic and social issues in society using domestic architecture. The simpler home design expressed many tensions of Progressivism in attempting to solve social issues of the time. The transformation brought about new ideas as well as fears that had to be confronted. The spread of factories from the industrial age left anxiety concerning the loss of independence and masculinity. The middle class population was becoming salaried workers, loosing economic and moral independence. The Progressive Era had created a deep desire to reshape institutions and values as well as faith to reform the people. At the same time, the Arts and Crafts Movement grew in response to the spread of factories. It drew inspiration from John Rustic, an Oxford artist, who believed that machines were robbing people of the creativity and pleasure of work situations. The bungalow design was influenced by a variety of social and economic trends that expanded the middle class and became a powerful means of transformation in American society. Arts and Crafts promoters associated the bungalow design with creative manual work, independence, and a way to return to manhood of common work practices. The bungalow ... • 18. The Definition Of Tradition In Federico Garcia Lorca s... The definition of tradition is an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior ( Tradition ). Tradition is the quiet force that lies behind people s choices in society. Whether they know it or not, they tend to follow certain traditions unquestionably. As stated in its definition, tradition can be inherited. The influence of inherited tradition can be seen Federico Garcia Lorca s Blood Wedding. This play is set in Spain during the 1920 s. It follows the story of an unhappy bride at her wedding, where her mysterious past lover showing up at the festivities. When the bride and her past lover run away together, her husband, Bridegroom, follows. This all culminates to a bloody ending, as the play is aptly named. Through an analysis of the characters actions in Blood Wedding, it becomes clear that when tradition is unquestionably followed, it has a powerful negative influence on an individual s choices. It can be seen that the confining bonds of tradition cause Bride and Leonardo to run away together, only to be thwarted. After they escape, Leonardo confronts Bride after she tries to deny her part in their escape, asking Who led the way down the stairs? (Lorca 58). After she admits it was her, Leonardo asks a follow up question, Who put a new bridle on the horse? (Lorca 58). Bride then again answers that it was her. It is clear that Bride is the one who initiated the escape from the wedding as she confirms that she was the one who led Leonardo away. This shows just how desperate Bride is to be free of the suffocating bonds of tradition. She does not want a future with Bridegroom, she only wishes to follow her heart, which is with Leonardo. The bride s heart is truly with Leonardo, and tradition has prevented her from having the life that she really wants. The bride and Leonardo try to break tradition, only to meet a grim fate. The fate of Leonardo is confirmed by First Girl who is standing in the doorway, after the climax of the story when she says, The lover is speechless./ The groom is red./ On the bank if the river/ I saw them lying (64). In this line of dialogue, it becomes clear that tradition is strong within this society, and it is impossible to escape. Leonardo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule The December of 1991 marked the end of the Soviet Union and with it, an entire era. Like the February Revolution of 1917 that ended tsardom, the events leading up to August 1991 took place in rapid succession, with both spontaneity and, to some degree, retrospective inevitability. Mikhail Gorbachev, the new General Secretariat in 1985, seemed to represent this new generation of power. After two decades of decaying social and economical conditions, it was clear that restructuring of governmental policies were in dire need. As it was the only legal party allowed in the USSR until the repeal of Article Six of the Constitution in 1990, the Communist Party, although conceptualized as a homogenous dictating organization, had long harbored many variants of ideologies. The leadership of Gorbachev was an accumulated manifestation of the reformist wing within the ruling elites. Such a wing had always existed despite hard partiinost, and to Strayer they were the alternative tradition which saw Leninism and democracy, the plan and the market, as compatible with each other (Strayer, 87). Gorbachev was a student of Khrushchev s thaw who moved much more skillfully than his ideological predecessor at pushing for real reforms reforms that eventually destroyed the system they were supposed to save in a great stroke of irony. However, it is true that Gorbachev did not fully comprehend the significance nor foresee the ultimate effect of his reforms. Introduction Babesia parasites are obligate intraerythrocytic protozoa capable of invading a wide range of vertebrate hosts, subsequently leading to serious economic problems for the livestock industry throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Homer et al., 2000; Uilenberg, 2006). Bovine babesiosis is mainly caused by two species of bovine intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina. Infected animals in an acute stage have symptoms of fever, anemia, hemoglobinuria, and sometimes resulting in death. In contrast, those in chronic stages may become chronic carriers without clinical signs. Human and rodent babesiosis caused by Babesia microti has emerged as a life threatening zoonosis in the world (Kjemtrup and Conrad, 2000). Although infection usually is asymptomatic, immunocompromised and elder people develop mild to moderate fever, headache, body aches, fatigue, and anorexia. Importantly, B. microti has been used as an experimental model for studying novel chemotherapy (Aboulaila et al., 2012) and host immune responses, the understanding of which is a prerequisite for developing an effective vaccine against Babesia parasites (Yokoyama et al., 2003). Whatever it is I can assure you farming is the nation s most important and noblest profession. Today farming is seen as a dangerous profession, that s not necessarily the case, it is true that many people are injured and even killed on farms each year. In 2012 alone three hundred and seventy four farmers and farm workers lost there lives due to work related injuries, and every day a staggering one hundred and sixty seven agriculture workers suffer a work related injury (CDC 2012). But why so many? The simple answer is that when it comes to farm safety many people are ignorant. I myself am guilty of not using the proper safety equipment or even removing a safety shield to make things run more efficient. I think we have it hardwired in our brains that bad things only happen to other people, and nothing bad could happen to ourselves, that s not the case. I think that if farmers will take the time to slow down and be more careful and think things through we will cut down drastically on injuries. If you think about it many farmers are constantly stressed, they simply don t have enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks at hand so they begin to rush which causes shortcuts to be made which can potentially lead to injury or death. The concept of a political and cultural nation, as we know it today, didn t appear until near the end of the 18th century, at the time of the French and American Revolutions. And many countries, notably African countries, have boundaries that have nothing to do with natural features or ethnicity or anything else. They are simply straight lines drawn in the last century by former colonial powers. Is there a question? Student Yes! Isn t the language also a determining factor? Professor Indeed! And then there s language, which is also used as a rationale for nationhood. The United States and Germany and France are all large, successful states that are defined mostly by language. But on one hand, many international boundaries cut directly across language lines, as with Belgium and The Netherlands while on the other hand, countries like South Africa and India include speakers of many different languages. In a field of 8 swimmers, the number 8 flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears welled up in my eyes as failure washed over me. I hated that part of Swimming. • 37. Analyzing The Story Who Will Light Incense When Mothers... In the story Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone? the author has created multiple themes or ways to interpret the purpose behind the story. Lam says, She turns 70 but she remains a vivacious woman her hair is still mostly black, there is still a girlish twang in her laughter, and her eyes twinkle at the telling of a joke (Lam). The way the author speaks about Mrs. Lam, using such vivid language shows that he takes time to appreciate the person she is and how she lights the room up. Showing so much attention to detail about someone can really show the love towards one another, thus allowing filial love to be an alternative theme of the story. Vietnam is very much relevant to this story because of the fact that Lam s mother brings over Vietnamese traditions in hope that her children will continue to carry on their her legacy. According to the who will light incense when mothers gone? , Lam create the idea of Vietnams identity by saying, mumbles solemn prayers to the spirits of our dead ancestors, and to the all compassionate Buddha. Here he is explaining a Vietnam tradition his mother practiced as a daily routine, asking for protection of her children and that they shall thrive in America. Between the family moving to America and the mother asking of her God for her kids to prosper in America, this tells readers that the education system or dreams for a good career probably are not as advantageous as the opportunities in America. One of the biggest challenges in the Vietnam school system is that if a student has a question about something, they are not allowed to address the instructor unless called upon. If the student never gets called upon the student must than go back through the notes they took during class and find the answer. But what if the notes were not written down correctly? Than that student has just answered the question on the next test incorrectly because of inadequate communication of the school system. How is a Vietnam student supposed to have a reasonable career if the countries school system is failing them. However, just as the Lam family has done, moving to America will allow a strong and more improved education for a levelheaded career. This is also known to be considered the American Dream way of ... Professor Albright, There is no doubt in my mind that the script is more archaic than that of the Nash papyrus (a very small portion of the Old Testament dated between the second century b.c. and first century a.d.)... I would prefer a date around 100 b.c.... Inside the archaeological community and the general public, Albright received critical acclaim. Although, Professor Albright s most noteworthy work was working with the Dead Sea Scrolls, it was his innovative work in the field of biblical archaeology that had the biggest impact. Professor Albright, More than any other scholar Albright s astounding corpus of books, articles, and public lectures defined a new relationship between archaeology and biblical studies. Professor Albright one states Discovery after discovery has established the accuracy of innumerable details, and has brought increased recognition of the Bible as a source of history. McClay and Historian Howard Zinn regarding the concept of American exceptionalism. McClay and Zinn provide convincing arguments as they support their contrasting viewpoints with key examples from American history on the question, Should Americans believe in a unique American mission? On one hand, McClay offers a belief in the unique American mission as interconnecting with our Founding Fathers through divine providentialism. On the other hand, Zinn rejects this notion asserting that restraint from the mythical belief of American exceptionalism will suppress combative desires. Professor McClay believes that ... In The Power and the Glory, Zinn further expounds on Albert Einstein s argument that, Wars will stop when men refuse to fight by stating American will stop fighting wars when they discard the myth of American exceptionalism (McKenna Feingold 2011, 18). I believe that McClay and Zinn provide a persuasive argument elaborating their notion of the validity of America s unique mission. However, I am inclined to agree with Professor McClay in his assertion in the mythical nature of American exceptionalism that has promoted social cohesiveness and propelled America as the beacon of liberty and democracy (McKenna Feingold 2011, 14). The existence of present day America developed after a period of empirical practices that allowed us to incorporate the positive qualities of democracy and make note of the negative aspects of wrongfully enforcing democratic ideals internationally (McKenna Feingold 2011). • 40. Essay on Sexual Selection Sexual selection was an idea proposed by Darwin and refers to the process in which males and females attempt to maximize their chances of reproductive success. Within a species there are certain characteristics that make individuals attractive to potential mates. An example of this is in peacocks, female peacocks are attracted to males with long brightly colored tails, even though this makes them easier to be spotted by predators. This characteristic then evolves within the species due to how males with this characteristic have a higher chance of reproductive success and their characteristics being passed on to surviving offspring. There are 2 types of sexual selection. Intersexual selection takes place when males compete for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clark and Hatfield helped support this by getting female and male experiments to ask male and female participants if they would like to engage in casual sex. 75% of males said yes while every female participant said no. This helps support the sexual selection theory as it shows that females have to be more careful with mating as they only have a limited amount of opportunities therefore are more likely to enter a longterm mating strategy. Males can have casual sex with little investment so are more likely to then females. This study helps to show the gender differences. Much of the research documenting sex differences in mate choice focus on preferences rather than on real life choices. So a male may have a preference but may have to settle for much less. Mate choice is a product of mate preferences form in the environment of evolutionary adaptiveness (EEA). Sexual selection suggests that females prefer males who they can gain benefits from such as gifts. This is shown in male birds who make nests for females in order to mate with them and also in insects who give nuptial gifts. Sexual selection also suggests that females prefer males who have a strong jawline and prominent cheekbones. These characteristics arise because of a strong presence of testosterone which also helps to indicate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Title: The Use of Strange Places in David Mitchell s Slade House and Jordan Peele s Get Out Published in 2015, Slade House is a horror mystery written by David Mitchell. While their storylines are quite different, the book has many similar fear inducing tactics used in Jordan Peele s Get Out. The methods used in these two stories are what University of York professor, John Bowen would classify as gothic motifs. These motifs break down into groups he has labeled as clashing time periods , power and constraint , terror versus horror , a world of doubt , and strange places (Bowen). In particular, professor Bowen describes strange places in gothic fiction as somewhere other, different, and, mysterious (Bowen). He also claims that they are, often threatening or violent, sometimes sexually enticing, and, often a prison (Bowen). The novel, Slade House and the film, Get Out are both considered Gothic text because they contain the crucial aspects of the strange places motif. The places in Slade House are strange because they lack consistency. The author, David Mitchell, first introduces the motif immediately when Nathan Bishop and his mother Rita, arrive in Slade Alley. Nathan himself describes the alley as somewhere a tramp might live in a cardboard box (Mitchell 6). Slade House itself is a strange place because it is an expansive plot of land located in a small alley way. • 46. Analysis Of Frances Burney s The Perfect Definition Of... Frances Burney was born in a time where women were treated differently from men and expected to marry as soon as possible. Evelina, a book published in 1778, portrays a character with the same name who experiences stages in her life before finally becoming a lady in personality and title. In Evelina, Burney presents the treatment of different women within a male dominated society. The ideal woman was often presented as a delicate object that depended on a man. In the novel, the perfect definition of a lady by the standards of that time is none other than Lord Orville s younger sister Lady Louisa. When Lady Louisa is seen at Mrs. Beaumont s home, Evelina notices that she is wobbling rather walking into a room and that her voice [spoke] so softly she could hardly be heard . This demonstrates her extreme femininity for being very weak and fragile to the point that she is quickly fatigued to death (410). Moreover, another example was Mrs. Mirvan in the first volume who was a kind and sweet tempered woman (132). Like a true lady of that time, she was highly dependent on a man and so she was often charged to healing those wounds which her husband s inflicts (150). Yet, Lady Louisa still remains as the main example of a real lady due to her behavior. She was easily tired, enjoyed having the attention on her and associated herself solely with those who were of her class. In 1970, James Ingraham, an eighth grade student of Drew Junior High School was one of the many beneficiaries of corporal punishment distributed by Willie Wright, the principal of the high school. The rationality behind Ingraham s punishment was that he was slow to respond to his teacher instructions. As a result, his teacher sent him to the principal office where he bent over the table was given twenty licks with a paddle. After a losing battle Ingraham faced, both in the U.S. and State Supreme Court, Principal Wright and his colleagues around the country were able to continue in practicing physical discipline, even with the new added uncertainty surrounding it. This case increased the awareness of corporal punishment in Florida and around the country, especially extreme where this level of discipline was displayed in schools. As seen in this trial, the collaborative effort by the justice departments and their want to stay out of state based issues, sided with the Florida law and educational system because they believed that the actions toward Ingraham and Andrews were justifiable on the basis that they were in school and because educators performed the punishment.
