Structure, Theme and Convention in Sir Philip Sidney s Sonnet Sequence
The sixteenth century was a time of scientific, historical, archaeological, religious and artistic
exploration. More attention was being allotted to probing into the depths of the human psyche and it
was up to the artists and poets rather than the priests and scholars to examine and mirror these internal
landscapes. The little world of man [1] was reflected through various artistic forms, one of which was
the sonnet, which was conventionally used for dedications, moral epigrams and the like. Traditionally
most sonnets dealt with the theme of romantic love and in general the sonneteer dealt with the over
riding concern of the self and the other, the latter of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Incidentally, although not a realistic autobiography, Stella is modelled on Penelope Devereux, who
was supposed to marry Sidney but was then forced to marry Lord Rich, and phil in Astrophil is indeed
an abbreviation of Sidney s first name, Philip . After finding out about Penelope s marriage, fate had it
that Sidney started to truly have feelings for her although by this time it was too late.
Astrophil s actions seem to be forgiven by some critics because he is after all driven by love. In fact
Sidney s depiction of the male protagonist is one which makes some critics and readers empathize
with him during his lamentations and praise of Stella. This may be because it is thought that Sidney s
aim was to show readers how a man can let his emotions get the better of him, thereby leading him
into eventual despair. It is through Astrophil s mistakes and negative example that Sidney is able to
inculcate morality. This is also another typical quality of sonneteers, who aim to morally instruct
through their art.
Beneath the witty surface of Astrophil s lamentations, Thomas P. Roche seems to feel that Sidney is
using Astrophil s journey from hope to despair as a fictional device for the analysis of human desire in
Christian terms. [2] Consequently Roche points out that in witnessing Astrophil s despair the readers
reaction is supposed to make them conscious of his limitations from a

Theme Of Allegory In The Birthmark By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was the author of multiple short stories and poems, all of them in the Dark
Romantic genre. Hawthorne gained his inspiration at home with his mother, sisters, and his wife,
Sophia Peabody who was a poet as well. In his writing, one of his strongest traits was his use of
allegory. Hawthorne often uses allegory in his short stories to add a different perspective onto his
many works. In his short story, The Birthmark, Hawthorne utilizes foreshadowing and symbolism to
portray the allegorical lesson that striving for perfection results in troubling outcomes.
Hawthorne uses the device of foreshadowing to show how aiming for perfection results in an outcome
that one does not expect. This is evident when he writes, Aylmer ... Show more content on

Georgiana s birthmark is the main symbol in the story that could have multiple meanings. It is clear
what the birthmark symbolizes when Georgiana declares, I am happy to put my life in your hands,
(Hawthorne 3). Aylmer is ready to start his experiment when Georgiana says she is willing to be a part
of it. What Aylmer does not know is that the birthmark actually symbolizes her mortality and when
she says she is happy to put her life in his hands, she actually means that her birthmark is her lifeline
and she is happy to put it in his hands. Aylmer wanted his wife to be perfect, but he only made the
outcome worse with trying to remove the mark. Another example of symbolism is when Hawthorne
writes, The mark was usually a deep red color, (Hawthorne 1). The color red could symbolize one of
many different things, but it mainly symbolizes the color of blood. Blood is a main part of one s body
and mortality, and when the birthmark is described by its deep red color, it means that the mark is her
source to life. After the tragic death of Georgiana, Aylmer finally realizes that the birthmark really had
been her mortality. Aylmer is so deeply caught up in forcefully trying to get Georgiana to let him
remove her birthmark, he does not recognize the true perfection that was there all along. Symbolism
helps the theme that is portrayed throughout the story that trying to be flawless results in a
devastation.

Paper Mache Research Paper
Art is perhaps the best way on the planet to show and describe feelings. For many people art is
nothing but color on paper, but in truth it is so much more. To be able to properly understand a work
of art, which could be a sculpture, painting, drawing etc. You must first be able to understand how the
artist has expressed themselves. So we are going to take this one step at a time and look at one of the
most popular type of sculpture. Paper mache. Paper mache comes from the combination of French
syllables, papier mache meaning chewed paper. The art form gets its name from it s wet, soggy
appearance. The composite material can be made from paper or pulp. In Ancient Egypt, many of the
facemasks and caskets were made from crushed up papyrus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For those of you who don t know what a pinata is, it is basically a paper mache animal or toy that you
hollow out and fill with candy. Then you put on a blindfold and hit it with a bat until the candy comes
out. This tradition first originated from Spain except you would fill the pinata with toys or other small
trinkets instead of candy.
For those of you who are new to art. It is not easy. Frustration can be very common, especially when
you sculpt in paper mache. I have done paper mache before and know it to be very unforgiving if you
make a mistake. A couple examples of things you want to avoid are: thin spots on your project, (cave
in s), Not too much solution, (Can wreck your base), And painting before your sculpture is dry.
Like I said at the start of this essay. Art is a wonderful way to express yourself in many ways: visual,
photographic, sculpting (3D) etc. but one thing everyone must keep in mind is that no piece of art is
perfect. If you make a mistake that is just fine, you are not a professional. And if you are, well good
for you. But what I am trying to say is that not just anyone can fully grasp or understand art. As all my
teachers say. It s okay not to know, however it isn t okay not to

Bad Grades Equals No Driver’s License
Bad Grades Equals No Driver s License: Bad Policy Imagine if you were in high school and you
weren t the brightest student, which resulted in bad grades, and then there was a policy made where
you couldn t even get your driver s license until your grades got up and stayed up. This is a policy that
is being debated on by some legislators who think it s a good policy and some who don t think it s
such a good policy. I would be siding with the legislators who don t think it s a good policy. It s not a
good policy because I feel like it s not really the legislators place. Also, students would be getting
good grades for the wrong reasons. Lastly, someone s academic in school doesn t have anything to do
with the ability to drive. Legislators ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This statistic proves how not many students are doing as good, considering the majority of them
scored below basics . However, if we were to pass the policy then the score would most likely rise
because students would be working harder in school and doing what they need to do. It could possibly
give the student a better comprehension level and decision making level, so when they do begin
driving the people around them along with themselves will be safer. However, their argument would
be invalid considering that students grades/ intelligence level and their driving skills don t have
anything to do with the other. If students are getting good grades in school it doesn t necessarily mean
that their driving skills are going to be equal with the intelligence level. Besides, in an article it reads
that, The mean grade point average for female high school graduates was 3.10 in 2009, .33 higher than
the average GPA for young women in 1990. The average GPA for male high school graduates over the
same period rose .31 points to 2.90. and that, Some say this means American high schools are
churning out smarter, harder working students. ( U.S. News). This evidence proves that the policy that
students should have good grades before they can receive their license is unnecessary because students
are already doing better grade wise. I can t say myself for a fact that teens

Biography of Martha Graham Essay example
Biography of Martha Graham
Martha Graham was known as the mother of American dance. She was born on May 11,
1894 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. At fourteen she moved with her family to California and began
dancing. The first dance recital she saw was in Los Angeles, California by choreographer and dance
pioneer, Ruth St. Denis. When Graham was twenty two years old she joined the Denishawn school
and dance troupe. The school of Ruth St. Denis and
Ted Shawn had a great impact on Graham s idea of dance. Graham used different dance traditions in
her works to create a Neo classical dance style. She believed that movement originated in the tension
of a contracted muscle and continued in the flow of energy released from ... Show more content on

In this, she played a virgin, who represented the independent woman. She danced in Primitive
Mysteries after she visited the American
Southwest in 1931. Graham s interest in the American theme began after the dance. After
Primitive Mysteries she continued to stick with the American theme. The most influential American
themed dances were Appalachian Spring, American
Document and Frontier. The American Document was a dance that used the Bible as well as the
Declaration of Independence as inspiration. There was more speaking in this show than in any other.
The narrator spoke alternate lines from the sermons of the Bible. The narrator also spoke about
American History including passages from The Declaration of
Independence.
Appalachian Spring was one of her most famous shows. The American Theme is portrayed in this
dance, through the marriage of an American couple, beginning their lives together on the American
Frontier. The dance was popular when it was introduced to the public and is still known as one of her
best pieces today. The Frontier was the first of the American Theme. It was a solo performance
choreographed and danced by Graham. The Frontier was the first time she used Isamu
Noguchi to sculpt her set. It was the first time a sculptor was used in modern dance. The set he
designed captured the vastness of the American Frontier. Graham was not the only dancer and
choreographer of her time. Alwin Nikolais

Nietzsche s Morals
In 1887, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche had written a collection of essays entitled The Genealogy of
Morals. Nietzsche ideas was an inscribed assessment based upon ethical principles. Nietzsche
analyzes the connections and significance of the contrasting moral concepts in a distinctive section
where he elaborates on the good and the bad as well as the good and evil , by expressing his thoughts
on slave morality that was created by the Jews.
In the beginning, Nietzsche states that the priest is worthless and that they learn to hate. The priest
hatred is powerful that it causes them to be destructive and it is known throughout history. Nietzsche
compares the Jews to the priest caste who were the most hated in human history. The Jews somehow
managed to reverse the moral assessments associating themselves as good but, the powerful nobles
will be known as evil and damned for eternity. However, Nietzsche said, It was the Jews who started
the slave revolt in morals (445)
In the following section, Nietzsche explains that the reassessment of values effected by the Jews was
occurring and that they were not noticeable. One of their achievements was the development of the
religious teachings Christianity. He states that the Christian love violated the Jewish hatred and that
the representation of Jesus and his crucifixion was the persuasion of the moral code. The embodiment
and crucifixion of Jesus showed that annulment of the moral code, was once good became evil and

Favourable traits which genetically modified crops possess are resistance to disease and insects
infestation which are usually responsible for crops loss, resistance to harsh conditions (draught,
extreme temperature, high salt content in soil) and resistance to herbicide. Resistance to herbicide
enable farmers to used herbicide on fields to kill weeds without harming the crops.
Farmers do not need to hire more labour to spray pesticides, remove weeds since crops are resistant to
insects and herbicides are used to kill off weed without harming the cop thus the farmers save money.
The production of higher yield, production of crops under harsh condition enables farmers to utilise
land which was previous unusable e.g. land with high salt concentration thus increase the overall farm

Although, The United States outlawed slavery 149 years ago and The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was
signed into law 50 years ago. There is still a perception that African American individuals are still
beneath Caucasian individuals, for some ignorant individuals. That perception was an issue that
reignited April 25, 2014 at 10:00 PM when the celebrity gossip publication TMZ posted on their
website a leaked tape of Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling telling his girlfriend he does not
want her to bring black people to his games, including Magic Johnson.
The incident began when his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, posted an unassuming picture of she and Magic
Johnson on Instagram. After posting the picture, Sterling began to receive messages from other
individuals about V. posting a picture with Magic Johnson and Sterling became upset that V. posted
the picture on social media for the public to see. According to TMZ on the tape he is heard saying,
It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you re associating with black people. Do you have
to? (3:30) You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want.
The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games. (5:15) I m just

Neurological Approach Analysis
Psychological and Neurological Approaches
Introduction
It has only been recently that learning and memory were considered to be of scientific relevance. It
has developed over the years as more accurate ways of measuring these fields have come to the
surface. Aristotle, a philosopher, was of the first few to observe and write about memory. He
developed the idea of associationism which states that memory can be influenced by formations of
associations or linkages between events, sensations, or ideas, so that experiencing any of these elicits a
memory or anticipation of the other (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). There are three basic principles
of associationism which include contiguity, frequency, and similarity. Contiguity is the experience ...

It provides the physiological blueprint for the way our brain processes learning and memory. There are
two major recent advancements in technology that help us physically see how all these parts work and
function together. Structural neuroimaging is the process of creating a anatomical picture of the brain.
It can show the size and shape of the brain as well as areas of lesions or brain damage (Gluck,
Mercado, Myers, 2014). Common structural neuroimaging techniques used today are computed
tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). While
they all work to create a 3D image of your brain, the each have their own unique image to show. The
traditional x ray only providing one image at one angle, the CT scans allow for multiple images of
slices or crosses through the body and this allows you to see the anatomical structure of the body in
three dimensional space (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). The MRI works in a similar way although it
uses magnetic waves to create electrical currents in the brain, allowing you to create an image of size
and/or shape of the brain. The newly improved MRI or the DTI measures water diffusion in the brain
tissue where several groups of axons are physically viewing the connections of the brain (Gluck,
Mercado, Myers, 2014). Functional neuroimaging has allowed researchers to view the activities and
functions in the brain and track the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood, thus allowing them
to view areas where the brain is high function or low function. Technology like the positron emission
tomography (PET) and functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) are ways in which we can psychically see
these areas of activity. The method I find most intriguing is the CT scan for it was the first of its kind
in brain imaging. Personally experiencing a CT scan in the past, it always amazes me how quick and
accurately the

Iberians And Indigenous People In The 15th To 16th Century
Death. Rape. Torture. Enslavement. These were some of the horrific tragedies Indigenous peoples
endured as Iberians during the 15th to 16th century entered and ravaged their world. As the Spanish
empire spread their colonies into the Americas, many Indigenous peoples suffered the wake of the
Spanish thirst for power and profit. Iberians depicted the Indigenous peoples as naïve and inferior
because Iberians believed they were religiously and socially superior on the account of Christianity
and their assessment of a civilized culture. Caused by this superiority complex, the Indigenous peoples
were subjected to many hardships. Iberians had many preconceived ideas of the Indigenous peoples
but had accepted them as likewise subjects of the crown if they accepted Christianity. Iberians had
new found respect for the Indigenous peoples as they had established advanced societies and ways of
life, blaming bad religion as their only hamartia. Many Iberians, specifically Christopher Columbus,
an Italian explorer who is falsely credited with the discovery of the Americas, believed, ...they would
easily be made Christians [because]...they had no creed (RR, p. 11). Hence, they presumed Indigenous
peoples needed guidance as they were capable of redemption and conversion. As a result of the arrival
of the Portuguese in Brazil, Iberians went as far as to paint one of the first appearances of an
Indigenous person in a European painting. In the painting, Magi in Brazil by Vasco Fernandes

Music s Music On Pop Music
Most of the music on the radio today sounds very similar, and even those that sound a bit different still
have the same subject matter. It seems that the lyrics to songs don t matter much in pop culture,
judging by the songs played on pop radio that involve sex, drugs, and partying. Those like me who
truly have passion for music realize that lyrics are, in fact, important, if not the most important part of
a song. Those that are as passionate about music as I am tend to appreciate a song more if its melody
is nice and its lyrics are meaningful, rather than one or the other. Most of the overplayed music on pop
radio has lyrics that take less deep thinking than adding two plus two. On the other hand, less popular
genres of music, including indie and alternative, two genres much less likely to be found on pop radio,
incorporate some of these same themes drugs, sex, and partying are still referenced in genres other
than pop, and I refuse to lie and tell you all indie and alternative music is completely innocent and
wholesome it definitely isn t. But the themes that occur constantly in pop music are translated into
these genres in a way that means something far more in depth. For example, where a song like We
Can t Stop by Miley Cyrus blatantly states the lyric dancing with Molly and talks about how she and
her friends can do whatever they want because they re high at a party, a song like The A Team by Ed
Sheeran yes, this song does play on the radio, and yes, I do

What Is The Significance Of The Emancipation Proclamation
The occurrence of the famous Emancipation Proclamation proved to be a very significant moment of
truth. History was made during the American Civil War on January 1st, 1863, when President
Abraham Lincoln declared the slaves to be free from being owned by another person, although the
proclamation didn t completely end slavery. Many may know the famous Emancipation Proclamation
as what set the slaves free, but it s so much more than that. It s a presidential proclamation, that
focused on everything that even had to do with rebellion and uprising, along with the executive branch
of the U.S. including the the militia and Navy. The Emancipation Proclamation is so much greater

Issuing the Emancipation Proclamation was a long and complicated process that it was issued more
than once. On September 22, 1862 Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation,
declaring that as of January 1st, 1863, all slaves in the rebellious states shall be then, thenceforward,
and forever free. Despite that the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slave, it was still an eye
opening and crucial part of history. It changed the focal point of the Civil War, and gave the people an
aspiration and motive to get up everyday. It also changed the entire purpose of the Civil War to save
the nation and transform the motive from preserving the Union into standing up for human rights and
freedom. Overall, the Emancipation Proclamation ultimately changed the morals and the message of
the purpose behind the Civil War.
Lincoln believed that slavery was an unqualified evil to the negro, the white man, and the State,
although during his first inaugural address, Lincoln claimed that he had no purpose, directly or
indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the States where it exists. Although many may ask why
President Lincoln? Was Lincoln really trying to set the slaves free for the sake of the people? Or was
he after something greater? , Lincoln was very opposed to slavery. He is also the Father of Freedom
and believed that the abolishment of slavery is long

John Rawls Views On Social Justice
Everyday all over the world, people are victims of injustices done to them by their own people or done
to them by enemies. Some individuals that perform the injustices may not understand that they are
doing so. So that brings about the question of how does one categorize doing justice versus doing an
injustice? It may seem obvious to some but may be far from recognizable to others. John Rawls was a
political and moral philosopher that had his own views that helped shape the concepts of social justice.
There are two main principles the Mr. Rawls based his theory off and those are that everyone should
have equal rights and that social and economic inequalities are looked at and applied so that they are a

requirement is that the war must be waged by a person of authority and that it cannot be started by a

Abstract
This study was conducted at the Mpenjati Estaury which is located in Port Shepstone and lies along
the south coast of Kwa Zulu Natal. An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of water which is
either permanently or periodically open to the sea and within which there is measurable variation
salinity due to the mixture of fresh water derived from land, however the fresh water inflow may not
be perennial, the connection to the sea may be closed for part of the year and tidal influence may be

). Extreme storms can have greater effects, for example by completely destroying sand bars or other
sediment deposits. All this implies that when there are strong waves estuary mouths open wider and
when there are no waves the estuary mouths remain closed.
River flow or fresh water in flow has a significant influence on estuaries (Levin and Boesch et al.,
2001). Especially on the environmental conditions of the estuaries, such as salinity levels and estuary
health, biological, physical, geological and chemical aspects of TOCE (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001).
When river flow mixes with sea water along the mouth dynamics of estuaries this contributes to
diverse habitats and biological abundance (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). Fresh water inflows also
have an influence on the mouth of estuaries together with the tidal flushing (Levin and Boesch et al.,
2001). In some cases when there is low river flow, the entrances or mouth of estuaries may close off
completely (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). So river flow plays an important role in the functioning of
estuaries.
Material and Methods
The time in which this component too place was during low tide (midday) and the mouth of the
Mpenjati estuary was taken as the starting reference point for measuring the slope. Group 2A was
subdivided into three main groups, each of which observed, measured or scribed an element of the
beach slope. In the subgroups there were four

Why Does Hysteria Occur In The 1800 s
Women have been accused of being hysterical for centuries. Hysteria is defined as a psychoneurotic
disorder characterized by violent emotional outbreaks, disturbances of sensory and motor functions,
and various abnormal effects due to autosuggestion. Hysteria is not a condition that is specific to only
females (Hysteria). Although it is more common among women, men can also become hysterical in
their lifetime. This idea was proposed in the 1800s by a French neurologists named Jean Martin
Charcot. Charcot believed that hysteria was not a sexual disease that was only in women, he
concluded that it was in fact an inherited nervous disorder that affected both sexes (Hysteria). Hysteria

Women In A Rose For Emily And A Streetcar Named Desire
Every society has its own challenges and aspirations, but how these are handled makes a lot of
difference. (Akujobi) However, our society today and in the past have had the same challenge, which
is the suppressing of women by men. Anais Nin asked; How wrong is it for a woman to expect the
man to build the world she wants, rather than to create it herself? In today s life it is getting better
since women finally start having their own carrier instead of getting married with 20 while already
being pregnant. Augsburg s bishop Walter Mixa called women a few years ago baby producers , which
is a very outdated view of women and got ripped into pieces for that statement. This shows that even
though they are old fashioned people around the majority understands that women and men are equal
and women deserve to be happy, independent and successful. However, most women see building a
family as their way to be happy. Does that make women s happiness depending on men? Both texts A

Is the Octoroon a Typical Victorian Melodrama
Is The Octoroon a typical Victorian melodrama? The Oxford English Dictionary defines the genre of
melodrama as, a stage play, usually romantic and sensational in plot , this description certainly applies
to The Octoroon. It was an extremely popular form of stage drama and what I will discover is whether
its themes, content and structure are typical of the Victorian period melodrama. From the first time it
was presented at the start of the nineteenth century, melodrama attracted big audiences. It started out
very popular with the lower classes in society but as the century progressed melodrama became
appreciated by large sections of society(Leaver,444). It usually contained themes of love, murder and
honour. Audiences that went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ending shows me that boucicault altered his play to fit the British publics preconceptions of what
a melodrama should be, therefore making it into a standard melodrama for the time. The fact that the
plot in The Octoroon is based around the topic of slavery shows us that it is in someway different from
other melodrama s of the time. Slavery was a hot topic when the Octoroon was produced and some
argue that it is abolitionist in its tone. Victorian melodrama s while sensational, tended to be centered
around more common everyday settings and themes. Some argue that the play is abolitionist in its tone
but I disagree. Boucicault himself denied the piece was meant to be an anti slavery
statement(Degen,173). In a letter to The New York Herald in December 1859, Boucicault explains that
he is not taking sides, I have laid the scene in the South, and, as slavery is an essential element of
society there, insomuch I have been obliged to admit it into my scheme. . . .I believe the drama to be a
proper and very effective instrument in the discussion of all social matters. . . .It is by such means that
the drama can be elevated into the social importance it deserves to enjoy. Therefore I have involved in

Love And Cruelty In James Hurst s The Scarlet Ibis
Love and cruelty are two feelings that are so different, yet they are very similar. Cruelty can be
changed and conquered by love, turning into a proud, and wonderful thing. Yet, love can still fall apart
against the harshness of cruelty. James Hurst represents this idea through his characters, Doodle and
Brother, in his work, The Scarlet Ibis . Doodle is born with a caul around his head and grows up
crippled and physically limited. Brother is ashamed of Doodle s limitations and teaches Doodle how
to walk, run, climb, fight and swim. Hurst uses the symbols of the storm and the scarlet ibis to
demonstrate the cruelty and the love in Doodle and Brother s relationship, ultimately showing how
even the strongest of relationships can end.
The storm is used to symbolize Brother s cruelty towards Doodle. Doodle is born with a membrane
surrounding his head, a caul. Because of this, Brother is embarrassed and ashamed of Doodle not
being normal . Brother so much thought of killing Doodle to remove his problem although he never
actually did. Yet one day while Brother is watching Doodle in his crib, he sees Doodle smile and
realizes that he does have a brother in there. This inspires Brother to try and teach Doodle how to do
basic things any kid his age should be able to do. After having spent a lot of time with Doodle, Brother
has an epiphany and realizes he did not do this because of love, he did it because he is embarrassed
and ashamed of having a crippled brother. Yet one day while

To Kill A Mockingbird And Persepolis Comparison Essay
Compare how the composers of To Kill a Mockingbird and Persepolis use characterisation to explore
the conflict between personal and public worlds.
Everyone is different, has their own personality and views but it is not an uncommon occurrence when
their way of thinking clashes or is challenged with others. Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird
(T.K.A.M) and Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel Persepolis, while set in different time periods, explore
similar issues of discrimination which are shown through techniques used by the authors.
In both books, Harper Lee and Marjane Satrapi have built their stories around young female
protagonists, Scout a hard headed and impressionable tomboy from T.K.A.M and Marjane from
Persepolis. By having the stories be narrated from a child s perspective, it allows readers to understand
the characters unsophisticated and open minds. While living in different settings and having separate
values, both Scout and Marjane come across aspects of sexism and misogyny. From a young age,
Scout had learnt from her older brother, Jem, that things associating with girls are bad and things
associating with boys are good, Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that
s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some
to play with. (Ch.4, Pg.45) When Scout was two, her mother died of a sudden heart attack so she
never had any major female influences or role models growing up.

How Did The Second Industrial Revolution Affect The Economy
In the late 1800s, technological innovations began to revolutionize American lives. Every aspect of the
US was changed dramatically. Modern businesses started and replaced aged ones. Americans were
able to live more productively. However, this sudden progress for the American citizens seemed to
strike the U.S. government during a time when they weren t equipped. The U.S. government had just
finished recovering from the Civil War and was not prepared to deal with all these new advancements.
Even though the second Industrial Revolution of machinery had a beneficial impact on the US
economy in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was limited, and the lack of government regulation
essentially hurt the country s development as a whole.
New advancements made an influential impact on the U.S. economy and led to its initial success. The
rail business expanded greatly after the Civil War. Transcontinental lines linked the East and West and

imported goods rather than domestic goods. Farmers were left with a surplus of goods, but no

goods in an effort to get Americans to begin buying more domestic goods. However, the tariff not only
indirectly reduced the national market, but also hurt the farmers because they were unable to keep up

Examples Of Causative Verbs
Causative verb is used when talking about something that someone else did for another person. It
means that the subject caused the action to happen, but didn t do it themselves. Maybe they paid, or
asked, or persuaded the other person to do it. Causative verbs express an action which is caused to
happen. In other words, when someone has something done for me him cause it to happen. In other
words, he does not actually do anything, but asks someone else to do it for him. This is the sense of
causative verbs. Intermediate to advanced level English learners should study the causative verb as an
alternative to the passive voice (Dixon, R.M.W. 2000b:87).

verbs, in no particular order: let, help, allow, have, require, allow, motivate, get, make, convince, hire,

followed by an infinitive: She allows her pet cockatiel to perch on the windowsill. She hired a
carpenter to build a new birdcage (Ibid:65 68) . Three causative verbs are exceptions to the pattern
described above. Instead of being followed by a noun/pronoun and an infinitive, the causative verbs
have, make and let are followed by a noun/pronoun and the base form of the verb (which is actually an

LIBERTERIAN THEORY vs. SOCIAL RESPONSBILITY THEORY
The libertarian theory states that people are capable enough to find out and judge good ideas from bad.
It further says that an individual is a rational being and his rational thoughts lead him to differentiate
between good and bad. The press ought not to confine anything; even a negative substance may give
information and can settle on better decision in worse situation. Under this theory, media s main
purpose is to inform, educate, entertain and act as a regulator of the government. Libertarian Theory
involves a belief that everyone has a right to information.Media is a form of free speech to the society.
There is an enormous liberty to the press and the right to freedom of speech and expression including
the freedom of propagation of ideas, and circulation given to it as there is individualism for press too.
The Social Responsibility theory states that the main role of media is to serve the public. With power,
comes great responsibility. The theory tries to convey that the media is under a moral obligation to

Since 2004. Also, looking at Starbucks SEC filings, we can see that its comparable store
sales have decreased significantly in US markets since 2004. This has prompted WillandSteph
to evaluate Starbucks current strategies in addition to the retail coffee market as a whole. To
evaluate the problem, one of the biggest questions to consider is to what extent is the designer
coffee market just a fad. In other words, will the allure of gourmet Starbucks coffee be
maintained or will more appealing options threaten the success of Starbucks primary product?
If the designer coffee market is indeed a fad industry, we need to evaluate Starbucks possible options
to avoid further decline. The overarching question that we should answer is how
Starbucks can stay profitable in the future. A good place to start involves evaluating the current market
for coffee; from this point, we can gather information about market performance and determine the
extent to which designer coffee appeals to current consumers. Through market analysis, we can
investigate whether or not the demand for gourmet coffee is wavering. We will evaluate whether
coffee companies in general are having trouble maintaining profitability or if it

her hair was so fair it was four times as white as ivory. Alexander saw her bosom exposed and whiter

Her hair, parting, forehead, and eyes were so beautiful they were nevertheless describable. That is not
the case when it comes to her nose, cheek and mouth. Mouth s are described as a direct connection to

Future of an Illusion by Sigmund Freud Essay
Future of an Illusion by Sigmund Freud
In his book Future of an Illusion, Sigmund Freud utilizes his method of psychoanalysis on religion by
comparing the relationship between human and religion to that of a child and his parents. Freud
effectively demonstrates that religion is a product of the human mind. After exposing religion as a an
illusion, Freud concludes that humanity will be better off when it has forgone religion. This paper will
argue that Freud s assertion that religion is an illusion is correct because of it s blatantly traceable
evolution through the history of the human civilization and psyche.
The first argument that Freud makes in his assault on religion regards civilization. Freud argues that

Freud illuminates with slight sarcasm how convenient religion is in it s ability to rectify all the trials
and tribulations of life for us. Everything that happens in this world is an expression of the intentions
of an intelligence superior to us, which in the end, though its ways and byways are difficult to follow,
orders everything for the best. (Freud, 23) The existence of this divine creature who creates justice for
us ensures that the masses will not stray from the laws and beliefs of religion and society for fear of
being judged by this entity. Religion is also valuable to civilization for it s ability to explain death.
Thanks to religion, death became something other than simply the termination of a life. Death stopped
being the end and was recasted into the role of a doorway to another existence. As though knowing
that the continuation of life were not enough, religion furthers it s own appeal by promising that the
afterlife will be better than life on Earth. The afterlife itself also serves a function as well. A desire to
gain entry into this afterlife will cause many of the masses to renounce their instincts.
Another argument Freud makes is how religion is an attempt to fill in the gaps where civilization and
the pursuit of life cannot make individuals happy. The urge to rectify the shortcomings of civilization
which made themselves painfully felt is fulfilled by religion. (Freud,

The Characteristics Of A Machiavellian Leader
What makes a good leader? It requires honesty, integrity, and the love of your peers and subordinates;
or rather the contrary. Machiavelli s views tend to differ from the popular opinion. In his writings, he
gives a detailed idea of what it takes to be a powerful and successful leader. To have success as a
Machiavellian leader one must be prepared to do whatever it takes to gain and stay in power, use their
knowledge to their advantage. The guidelines set aside By Machiavelli can be seen in many real life
examples and throughout literature. These guidelines are followed and displayed by Prospero during
his resurgence of power in Shakespeare s The Tempest.
Machiavelli conveys many qualities and sets rules that a prince must possess to keep his power. First,
he makes it clear that in order to obtain and uphold power one must be willing to do anything to
preserve power. This includes tough decisions and choices that go against your moral compass.
Chapter fifteen of The Prince states that
A man that desires to be morally good at all times, will certainly come to a bad end because he must
live amongst so many who do not share his moral scruples. Thus, if a prince wants to keep his
position, he must learn to do bad things when necessary. (Machiavelli, page 133)
His assessment is that a prince must be ready to do things that are considered morally wrong to stay on
top. In the real world, there is an abundance of people that are immoral. They will act against you, so

religions, Corrington states that the limitation of a deity to a single dynamic personality entailed the
assignment to that persona of a gender that was perceived as the least limited in its socio biological
role .85
Such expression is seen in early Christianity, when Jesus as the incarnation of God has become a
crucial model for the saviour of the human race.86 In the work of Ruether who argues for
misappropriation of the saviour figure in the early Christian thought, the discussion on such gender
limitation takes the most dramatic turn: Who is this saviour, and from what does he save us? This
saviour of men comes to free men from birth, from women, from earth, and from limits. This saviour
can only come in the image of the male. As God can only be imaged as male, as the male is the proper
image of God, so the saviour too must be male.... .87
The key to understanding this tension lies in understanding of both the aforementioned expression of

The Greatest Challenges Of President George W. Bush
I have zero desire, just so you know, to be in the limelight. I don t think it s good for the country to
have a former president criticize his successor. You re not going to see me giving my opinions in the
public arena until I start selling my book. I m going to emerge then submerge. ¹The terrorist attacks on
the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the flight against the White House on September 11, 2001,
made George W. Bush into a wartime president. bush s dad the 41st president stated he had faced the
greatest challenge of any president since Abraham lincoln

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Print Media And Printed...
Introduction The term media is already familiar to our ears, and every almost every timewe are
dealing with something that s called media. But, what exactly is the media? Understanding media can
refer to at least two things : communication and computing. Media are all forms and channels used to
convey information ora message. According to Saiful Bahri Djamarah : Media is a tool that can be
used as a channel to reach the target message. While Miarso said that media is anything that can be
used to transmit message that can stimulate the mind, feelings, concern and willingness of students to
learn. There are two types of media that people often use which is printed media and electronic media.

andmodified as permanent, some are large and difficult to carry, requires the cost toget it, and sales are
limited. While for electronic media, in the provision of newson electronic media can not to repeat
what has been delivered, sources from electronic media mostly not reliable and not authentic,
sometimes the reference not accurate and become information overload to some person and only can
be used with electric able only. Comparison After the advent of printing nearly six centuries ago, the
printed media was the only form of mass communication. Then came electronic medium. Though both
print and electronic media deal with mass communication, there arecertain basic comparison. Literacy
is basic requirements for printed media, only a literate person can read it. While, electronic media
even illiterate person can watch news and understand the content through screen even cannot be read.
Language in printed media more structured, tidy, flowery and reader friendly but language used in
electronic media is spoken and more viewer friendly. In printedmedia readers have choice to go back,

The Effects Of Teen Dating Violence
Teen dating violence is multifaceted abuse that occurs between two people who are in a close
relationship, typically a romantic relationship (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016). One or more forms
of abuse may be present in the relationship matter which one or ones, the relationship is still unhealthy
for developing adolescents. Research has shown that its prevalence ranges from at least 9% to at most
57% teens having experienced teen dating violence at least once in their lifetime (Herrman, 2009).
Studies have also shown that the violence is not limited to males against females only as 11% of males
and 8.8% females have reported a violent incident (Herrman, 2009). Although teen dating violence
does not discriminate as to who is a victim or perpetrator, it is believed to occur more often in
minorities and lower socioeconomic classes. These people are also less likely to receive personal or
professional help due to the stigmas of being labeled as victims. Despite that, there are outreach
programs that school can offer for free to prevent and end the continuations of dating violence among
teens. The Center for Disease Controls defines teen dating violence as being either physical,
emotional, or sexual abuse between the victims and perpetrator while bullying is either physical,
verbal, psychological, or relational between a bully and victim (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016).
However, a study based on the work of Wolfe et al. (2001) seemingly combined the two definitions

The five events are correlated and occurring over approximate five months from 18th August 2010 to
13th December 2010.
Choice and Collection of Data
In order to study how stock prices react to these events, approximate three years of continuous daily
stock price are chose, beginning at 17th March 2008 and ending more than three months after the final
event at 22nd April 2011. In addition, SHANGHAI Stock Exchange Index (SSE) is adopted as a proxy
of the market portfolio.
The three year SAIC stock price data and its corresponding SSE index are obtained from
finance.yahoo.com, as it provides dividend adjusted closing prices. The two data are ordered in time in
Excel (Sort Ascending). It is found that 46 SAIC daily stock prices are missing due to suspension of
trading, therefore; 46 corresponding SSE daily index are removed in order to match up dates on the
two data series.
Estimation Period and Test Period
Given the event date and stock price data, the EP and TP can be constructed in order to estimate the
normal returns and abnormal returns respectively.
The model parameters are estimated from the EP and therefore the AR can be calculated within the TP
(Strong, 1992). Explicitly, the AR which

Something The Lord Made Essay
Something the Lord Made is a historical analysis conducted under a dramatic lense of the innovations
of Vivian Thomas and Alfred Blalock in respect to heart surgery, specifically blue baby syndrome.
Although the dramatic documentary is geared towards the innovations of heart surgery at this time,
there are also heavy ties to the racial divide during the period of history. Essentially, our protagonist,
Vivian Thomas, who subsequently has not had the opportunity to earn a college degree, is adopted by
accredited surgeon Alfred Blalock at Johns Hopkins University. While we see their research progress
we also see the nature and evolution of the dynamic of their relationship where Vivian Thomas, also
being incredibly intelligent, is regarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would like to make the argument, however, that this conflict is never resolved, but partially mediated
through habitual compromise. Vivian is given a stable position at Johns Hopkins University and
eventually receives a degree of respect he deserves, but he never matches his level. Due to his race,
Vivian is never able to live out his passion to the extent of which he is capable.
The two scenes that stand out to me in the film are related to the contrast of Vivian s strong family and
his treatment at JHU and the cinematic value of the surgery itself. The filmmaker made the excellent
decision of contrast through cuts at several points during the film, Vivian s treatment by Blalock, and
Vivian s companionship with his wife. The scene in which the blue baby is operated on is excellently
done, especially with the auditory climax with the layering of the instrumentals.
In the film, we are presented with an incredibly realized character, despite his skin color. We see he is
morally strong and mentally apt which, in any world, constitutes respect professionally and
relationally. For this, in the fashion of a case study, this emotional cognitive dissonance strengthens
the readers understanding and empathy of the overall cultural ambiance of this period of

  • 2. Structure, Theme and Convention in Sir Philip Sidney s... Structure, Theme and Convention in Sir Philip Sidney s Sonnet Sequence The sixteenth century was a time of scientific, historical, archaeological, religious and artistic exploration. More attention was being allotted to probing into the depths of the human psyche and it was up to the artists and poets rather than the priests and scholars to examine and mirror these internal landscapes. The little world of man [1] was reflected through various artistic forms, one of which was the sonnet, which was conventionally used for dedications, moral epigrams and the like. Traditionally most sonnets dealt with the theme of romantic love and in general the sonneteer dealt with the over riding concern of the self and the other, the latter of ... Incidentally, although not a realistic autobiography, Stella is modelled on Penelope Devereux, who was supposed to marry Sidney but was then forced to marry Lord Rich, and phil in Astrophil is indeed an abbreviation of Sidney s first name, Philip . After finding out about Penelope s marriage, fate had it that Sidney started to truly have feelings for her although by this time it was too late. Astrophil s actions seem to be forgiven by some critics because he is after all driven by love. In fact Sidney s depiction of the male protagonist is one which makes some critics and readers empathize with him during his lamentations and praise of Stella. This may be because it is thought that Sidney s aim was to show readers how a man can let his emotions get the better of him, thereby leading him into eventual despair. It is through Astrophil s mistakes and negative example that Sidney is able to inculcate morality. This is also another typical quality of sonneteers, who aim to morally instruct through their art. Beneath the witty surface of Astrophil s lamentations, Thomas P. Roche seems to feel that Sidney is using Astrophil s journey from hope to despair as a fictional device for the analysis of human desire in Christian terms. [2] Consequently Roche points out that in witnessing Astrophil s despair the readers reaction is supposed to make them conscious of his limitations from a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Theme Of Allegory In The Birthmark By Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne was the author of multiple short stories and poems, all of them in the Dark Romantic genre. Hawthorne gained his inspiration at home with his mother, sisters, and his wife, Sophia Peabody who was a poet as well. In his writing, one of his strongest traits was his use of allegory. Hawthorne often uses allegory in his short stories to add a different perspective onto his many works. In his short story, The Birthmark, Hawthorne utilizes foreshadowing and symbolism to portray the allegorical lesson that striving for perfection results in troubling outcomes. Hawthorne uses the device of foreshadowing to show how aiming for perfection results in an outcome that one does not expect. This is evident when he writes, Aylmer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Georgiana s birthmark is the main symbol in the story that could have multiple meanings. It is clear what the birthmark symbolizes when Georgiana declares, I am happy to put my life in your hands, (Hawthorne 3). Aylmer is ready to start his experiment when Georgiana says she is willing to be a part of it. What Aylmer does not know is that the birthmark actually symbolizes her mortality and when she says she is happy to put her life in his hands, she actually means that her birthmark is her lifeline and she is happy to put it in his hands. Aylmer wanted his wife to be perfect, but he only made the outcome worse with trying to remove the mark. Another example of symbolism is when Hawthorne writes, The mark was usually a deep red color, (Hawthorne 1). The color red could symbolize one of many different things, but it mainly symbolizes the color of blood. Blood is a main part of one s body and mortality, and when the birthmark is described by its deep red color, it means that the mark is her source to life. After the tragic death of Georgiana, Aylmer finally realizes that the birthmark really had been her mortality. Aylmer is so deeply caught up in forcefully trying to get Georgiana to let him remove her birthmark, he does not recognize the true perfection that was there all along. Symbolism helps the theme that is portrayed throughout the story that trying to be flawless results in a devastation. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Paper Mache Research Paper Art is perhaps the best way on the planet to show and describe feelings. For many people art is nothing but color on paper, but in truth it is so much more. To be able to properly understand a work of art, which could be a sculpture, painting, drawing etc. You must first be able to understand how the artist has expressed themselves. So we are going to take this one step at a time and look at one of the most popular type of sculpture. Paper mache. Paper mache comes from the combination of French syllables, papier mache meaning chewed paper. The art form gets its name from it s wet, soggy appearance. The composite material can be made from paper or pulp. In Ancient Egypt, many of the facemasks and caskets were made from crushed up papyrus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For those of you who don t know what a pinata is, it is basically a paper mache animal or toy that you hollow out and fill with candy. Then you put on a blindfold and hit it with a bat until the candy comes out. This tradition first originated from Spain except you would fill the pinata with toys or other small trinkets instead of candy. For those of you who are new to art. It is not easy. Frustration can be very common, especially when you sculpt in paper mache. I have done paper mache before and know it to be very unforgiving if you make a mistake. A couple examples of things you want to avoid are: thin spots on your project, (cave in s), Not too much solution, (Can wreck your base), And painting before your sculpture is dry. Like I said at the start of this essay. Art is a wonderful way to express yourself in many ways: visual, photographic, sculpting (3D) etc. but one thing everyone must keep in mind is that no piece of art is perfect. If you make a mistake that is just fine, you are not a professional. And if you are, well good for you. But what I am trying to say is that not just anyone can fully grasp or understand art. As all my teachers say. It s okay not to know, however it isn t okay not to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bad Grades Equals No Driver’s License Bad Grades Equals No Driver s License: Bad Policy Imagine if you were in high school and you weren t the brightest student, which resulted in bad grades, and then there was a policy made where you couldn t even get your driver s license until your grades got up and stayed up. This is a policy that is being debated on by some legislators who think it s a good policy and some who don t think it s such a good policy. I would be siding with the legislators who don t think it s a good policy. It s not a good policy because I feel like it s not really the legislators place. Also, students would be getting good grades for the wrong reasons. Lastly, someone s academic in school doesn t have anything to do with the ability to drive. Legislators ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This statistic proves how not many students are doing as good, considering the majority of them scored below basics . However, if we were to pass the policy then the score would most likely rise because students would be working harder in school and doing what they need to do. It could possibly give the student a better comprehension level and decision making level, so when they do begin driving the people around them along with themselves will be safer. However, their argument would be invalid considering that students grades/ intelligence level and their driving skills don t have anything to do with the other. If students are getting good grades in school it doesn t necessarily mean that their driving skills are going to be equal with the intelligence level. Besides, in an article it reads that, The mean grade point average for female high school graduates was 3.10 in 2009, .33 higher than the average GPA for young women in 1990. The average GPA for male high school graduates over the same period rose .31 points to 2.90. and that, Some say this means American high schools are churning out smarter, harder working students. ( U.S. News). This evidence proves that the policy that students should have good grades before they can receive their license is unnecessary because students are already doing better grade wise. I can t say myself for a fact that teens ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nietzsche ideas was an inscribed assessment based upon ethical principles. Nietzsche analyzes the connections and significance of the contrasting moral concepts in a distinctive section where he elaborates on the good and the bad as well as the good and evil , by expressing his thoughts on slave morality that was created by the Jews. In the beginning, Nietzsche states that the priest is worthless and that they learn to hate. The priest hatred is powerful that it causes them to be destructive and it is known throughout history. Nietzsche compares the Jews to the priest caste who were the most hated in human history. The Jews somehow managed to reverse the moral assessments associating themselves as good but, the powerful nobles will be known as evil and damned for eternity. However, Nietzsche said, It was the Jews who started the slave revolt in morals (445) In the following section, Nietzsche explains that the reassessment of values effected by the Jews was occurring and that they were not noticeable. One of their achievements was the development of the religious teachings Christianity. He states that the Christian love violated the Jewish hatred and that the representation of Jesus and his crucifixion was the persuasion of the moral code. • 10. Neurological Approach Analysis Psychological and Neurological Approaches Introduction It has only been recently that learning and memory were considered to be of scientific relevance. It has developed over the years as more accurate ways of measuring these fields have come to the surface. Aristotle, a philosopher, was of the first few to observe and write about memory. He developed the idea of associationism which states that memory can be influenced by formations of associations or linkages between events, sensations, or ideas, so that experiencing any of these elicits a memory or anticipation of the other (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). There are three basic principles of associationism which include contiguity, frequency, and similarity. Contiguity is the experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It provides the physiological blueprint for the way our brain processes learning and memory. There are two major recent advancements in technology that help us physically see how all these parts work and function together. Structural neuroimaging is the process of creating a anatomical picture of the brain. It can show the size and shape of the brain as well as areas of lesions or brain damage (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). Common structural neuroimaging techniques used today are computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). While they all work to create a 3D image of your brain, the each have their own unique image to show. The traditional x ray only providing one image at one angle, the CT scans allow for multiple images of slices or crosses through the body and this allows you to see the anatomical structure of the body in three dimensional space (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). The MRI works in a similar way although it uses magnetic waves to create electrical currents in the brain, allowing you to create an image of size and/or shape of the brain. The newly improved MRI or the DTI measures water diffusion in the brain tissue where several groups of axons are physically viewing the connections of the brain (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). Functional neuroimaging has allowed researchers to view the activities and functions in the brain and track the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood, thus allowing them to view areas where the brain is high function or low function. Technology like the positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) are ways in which we can psychically see these areas of activity. The method I find most intriguing is the CT scan for it was the first of its kind in brain imaging. Personally experiencing a CT scan in the past, it always amazes me how quick and accurately the ... • 11. Iberians And Indigenous People In The 15th To 16th Century Death. Rape. Torture. Enslavement. These were some of the horrific tragedies Indigenous peoples endured as Iberians during the 15th to 16th century entered and ravaged their world. As the Spanish empire spread their colonies into the Americas, many Indigenous peoples suffered the wake of the Spanish thirst for power and profit. Iberians depicted the Indigenous peoples as naïve and inferior because Iberians believed they were religiously and socially superior on the account of Christianity and their assessment of a civilized culture. Caused by this superiority complex, the Indigenous peoples were subjected to many hardships. Iberians had many preconceived ideas of the Indigenous peoples but had accepted them as likewise subjects of the crown if they accepted Christianity. Iberians had new found respect for the Indigenous peoples as they had established advanced societies and ways of life, blaming bad religion as their only hamartia. Many Iberians, specifically Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who is falsely credited with the discovery of the Americas, believed, ...they would easily be made Christians [because]...they had no creed (RR, p. 11). Hence, they presumed Indigenous peoples needed guidance as they were capable of redemption and conversion. As a result of the arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil, Iberians went as far as to paint one of the first appearances of an Indigenous person in a European painting. • 12. Music s Music On Pop Music Most of the music on the radio today sounds very similar, and even those that sound a bit different still have the same subject matter. It seems that the lyrics to songs don t matter much in pop culture, judging by the songs played on pop radio that involve sex, drugs, and partying. Those like me who truly have passion for music realize that lyrics are, in fact, important, if not the most important part of a song. Those that are as passionate about music as I am tend to appreciate a song more if its melody is nice and its lyrics are meaningful, rather than one or the other. Most of the overplayed music on pop radio has lyrics that take less deep thinking than adding two plus two. On the other hand, less popular genres of music, including indie and alternative, two genres much less likely to be found on pop radio, incorporate some of these same themes drugs, sex, and partying are still referenced in genres other than pop, and I refuse to lie and tell you all indie and alternative music is completely innocent and wholesome it definitely isn t. But the themes that occur constantly in pop music are translated into these genres in a way that means something far more in depth. For example, where a song like We Can t Stop by Miley Cyrus blatantly states the lyric dancing with Molly and talks about how she and her friends can do whatever they want because they re high at a party, a song like The A Team by Ed Sheeran yes, this song does play on the radio, and yes, I do ... On September 22, 1862 Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that as of January 1st, 1863, all slaves in the rebellious states shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. Despite that the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slave, it was still an eye opening and crucial part of history. It changed the focal point of the Civil War, and gave the people an aspiration and motive to get up everyday. It also changed the entire purpose of the Civil War to save the nation and transform the motive from preserving the Union into standing up for human rights and freedom. Overall, the Emancipation Proclamation ultimately changed the morals and the message of the purpose behind the Civil War. Lincoln believed that slavery was an unqualified evil to the negro, the white man, and the State, although during his first inaugural address, Lincoln claimed that he had no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the States where it exists. It may seem obvious to some but may be far from recognizable to others. John Rawls was a political and moral philosopher that had his own views that helped shape the concepts of social justice. All this implies that when there are strong waves estuary mouths open wider and when there are no waves the estuary mouths remain closed. River flow or fresh water in flow has a significant influence on estuaries (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). Especially on the environmental conditions of the estuaries, such as salinity levels and estuary health, biological, physical, geological and chemical aspects of TOCE (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). When river flow mixes with sea water along the mouth dynamics of estuaries this contributes to diverse habitats and biological abundance (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). Fresh water inflows also have an influence on the mouth of estuaries together with the tidal flushing (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). In some cases when there is low river flow, the entrances or mouth of estuaries may close off completely (Levin and Boesch et al., 2001). So river flow plays an important role in the functioning of estuaries. There are other apps and services with the aim of promoting political unity. For example, doctoral students at MIT developed a service called Connect where users enter information about themselves on a website, and the website helps to arrange in person lunches with people who live in their area who have been determined to be different from the user. The service was created to help people broaden their horizons by talking to people who have some things in common, but also have differences. However, this app is limited to Boston area institutions, so its user base is constrained in its size and diversity. • 20. Is the Octoroon a Typical Victorian Melodrama Is The Octoroon a typical Victorian melodrama? The Oxford English Dictionary defines the genre of melodrama as, a stage play, usually romantic and sensational in plot , this description certainly applies to The Octoroon. It was an extremely popular form of stage drama and what I will discover is whether its themes, content and structure are typical of the Victorian period melodrama. From the first time it was presented at the start of the nineteenth century, melodrama attracted big audiences. It started out very popular with the lower classes in society but as the century progressed melodrama became appreciated by large sections of society(Leaver,444). It usually contained themes of love, murder and honour. Audiences that went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This ending shows me that boucicault altered his play to fit the British publics preconceptions of what a melodrama should be, therefore making it into a standard melodrama for the time. The fact that the plot in The Octoroon is based around the topic of slavery shows us that it is in someway different from other melodrama s of the time. Slavery was a hot topic when the Octoroon was produced and some argue that it is abolitionist in its tone. Victorian melodrama s while sensational, tended to be centered around more common everyday settings and themes. Some argue that the play is abolitionist in its tone but I disagree. Boucicault himself denied the piece was meant to be an anti slavery statement(Degen,173). In a letter to The New York Herald in December 1859, Boucicault explains that he is not taking sides, I have laid the scene in the South, and, as slavery is an essential element of society there, insomuch I have been obliged to admit it into my scheme. . . .I believe the drama to be a proper and very effective instrument in the discussion of all social matters. . . .It is by such means that the drama can be elevated into the social importance it deserves to enjoy. • 22. Love And Cruelty In James Hurst s The Scarlet Ibis Love and cruelty are two feelings that are so different, yet they are very similar. Cruelty can be changed and conquered by love, turning into a proud, and wonderful thing. Yet, love can still fall apart against the harshness of cruelty. James Hurst represents this idea through his characters, Doodle and Brother, in his work, The Scarlet Ibis . Doodle is born with a caul around his head and grows up crippled and physically limited. Brother is ashamed of Doodle s limitations and teaches Doodle how to walk, run, climb, fight and swim. Hurst uses the symbols of the storm and the scarlet ibis to demonstrate the cruelty and the love in Doodle and Brother s relationship, ultimately showing how even the strongest of relationships can end. The storm is used to symbolize Brother s cruelty towards Doodle. Doodle is born with a membrane surrounding his head, a caul. Because of this, Brother is embarrassed and ashamed of Doodle not being normal . Brother so much thought of killing Doodle to remove his problem although he never actually did. Yet one day while Brother is watching Doodle in his crib, he sees Doodle smile and realizes that he does have a brother in there. This inspires Brother to try and teach Doodle how to do basic things any kid his age should be able to do. Everyone is different, has their own personality and views but it is not an uncommon occurrence when their way of thinking clashes or is challenged with others. Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird (T.K.A.M) and Marjane Satrapi s graphic novel Persepolis, while set in different time periods, explore similar issues of discrimination which are shown through techniques used by the authors. In both books, Harper Lee and Marjane Satrapi have built their stories around young female protagonists, Scout a hard headed and impressionable tomboy from T.K.A.M and Marjane from Persepolis. By having the stories be narrated from a child s perspective, it allows readers to understand the characters unsophisticated and open minds. While living in different settings and having separate values, both Scout and Marjane come across aspects of sexism and misogyny. From a young age, Scout had learnt from her older brother, Jem, that things associating with girls are bad and things associating with boys are good, Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with. Everything that happens in this world is an expression of the intentions of an intelligence superior to us, which in the end, though its ways and byways are difficult to follow, orders everything for the best. (Freud, 23) The existence of this divine creature who creates justice for us ensures that the masses will not stray from the laws and beliefs of religion and society for fear of being judged by this entity. Death stopped being the end and was recasted into the role of a doorway to another existence. As though knowing that the continuation of life were not enough, religion furthers it s own appeal by promising that the afterlife will be better than life on Earth. The Theological Concept Of The Divine Mother Essay Debates on the theological concept of the Divine Mother The 20th century feminist criticism of the systems of re presentation have attempted to expose the system of power that authorises certain representations while blocking, prohibiting, or invalidating others .83 Corrington further evaluates that if this is true for modes of expressing concepts in general, it is even more true for modes of expressing religious concepts .84 Moreover, summarising Ochshorn s argument for the expression of such concepts in monotheistic religions, Corrington states that the limitation of a deity to a single dynamic personality entailed the assignment to that persona of a gender that was perceived as the least limited in its socio biological role .85 Such expression is seen in early Christianity, when Jesus as the incarnation of God has become a crucial model for the saviour of the human race.86 In the work of Ruether who argues for misappropriation of the saviour figure in the early Christian thought, the discussion on such gender limitation takes the most dramatic turn: Who is this saviour, and from what does he save us? This saviour of men comes to free men from birth, from women, from earth, and from limits. This saviour can only come in the image of the male. As God can only be imaged as male, as the male is the proper image of God, so the saviour too must be male.... .87 The key to understanding this tension lies in understanding of both the aforementioned expression of ... • 44. The Effects Of Teen Dating Violence Teen dating violence is multifaceted abuse that occurs between two people who are in a close relationship, typically a romantic relationship (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016). One or more forms of abuse may be present in the relationship matter which one or ones, the relationship is still unhealthy for developing adolescents. Research has shown that its prevalence ranges from at least 9% to at most 57% teens having experienced teen dating violence at least once in their lifetime (Herrman, 2009). Studies have also shown that the violence is not limited to males against females only as 11% of males and 8.8% females have reported a violent incident (Herrman, 2009). Although teen dating violence does not discriminate as to who is a victim or perpetrator, it is believed to occur more often in minorities and lower socioeconomic classes. These people are also less likely to receive personal or professional help due to the stigmas of being labeled as victims. Despite that, there are outreach programs that school can offer for free to prevent and end the continuations of dating violence among teens. The Center for Disease Controls defines teen dating violence as being either physical, emotional, or sexual abuse between the victims and perpetrator while bullying is either physical, verbal, psychological, or relational between a bully and victim (Hertzog, Harpel, Rochelle, 2016). However, a study based on the work of Wolfe et al. (2001) seemingly combined the two definitions two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Choice and Collection of Data In order to study how stock prices react to these events, approximate three years of continuous daily stock price are chose, beginning at 17th March 2008 and ending more than three months after the final event at 22nd April 2011. In addition, SHANGHAI Stock Exchange Index (SSE) is adopted as a proxy of the market portfolio. The three year SAIC stock price data and its corresponding SSE index are obtained from finance.yahoo.com, as it provides dividend adjusted closing prices. • 46. Something The Lord Made Essay Something the Lord Made is a historical analysis conducted under a dramatic lense of the innovations of Vivian Thomas and Alfred Blalock in respect to heart surgery, specifically blue baby syndrome. Although the dramatic documentary is geared towards the innovations of heart surgery at this time, there are also heavy ties to the racial divide during the period of history. Essentially, our protagonist, Vivian Thomas, who subsequently has not had the opportunity to earn a college degree, is adopted by accredited surgeon Alfred Blalock at Johns Hopkins University. While we see their research progress we also see the nature and evolution of the dynamic of their relationship where Vivian Thomas, also being incredibly intelligent, is regarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would like to make the argument, however, that this conflict is never resolved, but partially mediated through habitual compromise. Vivian is given a stable position at Johns Hopkins University and eventually receives a degree of respect he deserves, but he never matches his level. Due to his race, Vivian is never able to live out his passion to the extent of which he is capable. The two scenes that stand out to me in the film are related to the contrast of Vivian s strong family and his treatment at JHU and the cinematic value of the surgery itself. The filmmaker made the excellent decision of contrast through cuts at several points during the film, Vivian s treatment by Blalock, and Vivian s companionship with his wife. The scene in which the blue baby is operated on is excellently done, especially with the auditory climax with the layering of the instrumentals. In the film, we are presented with an incredibly realized character, despite his skin color. We see he is morally strong and mentally apt which, in any world, constitutes respect professionally and relationally. For this, in the fashion of a case study, this emotional cognitive dissonance strengthens the readers understanding and empathy of the overall cultural ambiance of this period of ...
