Analysis of Edmund Waller s Poem On a Girdle Essay
Analysis of Edmund Waller s Poem On a Girdle
At first glance, Edmund Waller s poem On a Girdle seems to suggest nothing more than praise of one
woman s fair beauty and the speaker s love for her. After diving deeper into the text, however, it
becomes apparent that the speaker does a much better job of praising himself than the woman. His
love is more a lust for control and possession than a true declaration of sentiment. Waller uses extreme
imagery and exaggeration to seemingly praise this woman. More importantly, however, he subtlety
belittles her through tropes and diction. Waller evokes this image of her girdle to express his own
desire to restrict this beautiful woman.
It cannot be denied that Waller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everything he loved about her fit around her waist, her body. Waller is not interested in her brain, her
soul or her ideas. He never mentions them. He also never mentions how she might think or feel about
him. Waller praises this woman because of her beauty alone and as a result this seems to be her only
worth.
Within all this praise and admiration the woman is transformed into a status symbol. Waller brags, No
monarch but would give his crown, His arms might do what this has done. Crown is an interesting
word in this context. A crown is a king s status symbol, but a crown is also a British monetary unit, a
way of measuring worth. With this statement, Waller seems to be saying a king would gladly give up
his crown, his power, to put his arms around this woman as her girdle does. When viewed in this light
the statement appears to be a compliment. Perhaps, however, Waller is actually implying that this
woman is as effective a symbol of status as a crown and with her in his possession a king would no
longer need to rely on his crown for power. In this case the word crown can be seen as an ironic pun.
A crown denotes status but can also serve as a way of measuring monetary worth. The woman is
beautiful, giving the man status as a crown gives a king. A crown in the monetary sense measures
worth and this woman is deemed worthy only by her

The Math in Music
Music with Math Few people understand that music is actually connected to math. Most people i
believe have more of an idea of what music is than what they know what math is. Music is scales and
notes. Math is numbers and symbols. Deep in the core of music, music is really math. They also have
a strange connection: Music is the only art form where the form and the medium are the same. Math is
the only science where the methods and the subject are the same. Math is the study of math using
math. Music is only created and experienced as music. Thus, there is a natural connection between
mathematics and music: Both are experienced as pure objects of the brain, and both have meaning
outside of the brain only by artificial connections. Math and music are both universal. Math is applied
across the world to find solutions to everyday problems while music is played around the world and is
present in every world culture throughout history. Both math and music rely on spacing. The amount
of data or time a note is held connects math to music. A measure is relative to a line graph and a note
to a number or fraction. There are many things that connect with music and math. which are music
time, Reading music and fractions and last but not least the pythagorean scale. When you read a score
also known as a music sheet or musical piece you read it like if reading math that will give you some
informations of the piece you will be playing. Music sheets are divided into sections called

Different Methods Of Assessment At University Education
Introduction
As an increasing number of students are studying at university level which has become a common
topic for discussion today. More and more researchers pay close attention to this as well as the forms
or methods of assessment. Universities across the globe have a variety of methods. Different methods
of assessment accomplish distinct aims, and students should be tested with different forms of
assessments according to their learning styles. This essay will discuss whether there should be greater
flexibility in forms or methods of assessment at university education.
The aims of education
Education is the most important and effective way to help individuals develop and socially progress.
People establish their own concept of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Education has provided people with equal opportunities to appreciate and understand this world with
their own thought, concerning the beauty of nature, and comprehension of past experiences, which
they can analyse and find a solution.
The aims of university education are to develop students skills for learning and assist them to immerse
themselves deeply in society (Swain, 2011). Generally, people learn the basic problem solving skills in
kindergarten, but due to the expectations of the future, such as having a better quality of life, they
intend to go to university to master life and job related skills. In the early stages of university, students
are expected to learn the professional knowledge in the field they study in, and in the final year,
university will give students opportunities to apply for the internship at popular companies or
organisations. Those work experiences will have beneficial effects on the students career development
and help them to adapt to society easier after graduation.
Various forms or methods of assessment achieve different purpose
1. Traditional written assessments:
Most universities use traditional written assessments as methods to evaluate students learning
outcomes, including open book and closed book final exams, essays and reports. Those methods
always help students gain speculative knowledge and practical skills which are necessary for them to
master and promote their writing ability. As an example, open book and

The Robertson Family Analysis
The arrival of a new baby brings excitement, joy, and anticipation. The Robertson family was certainly
no exception to these feelings when their son Steven was born. Ida and John Robertson were like most
new parents when it came to expectations and interactions with their son on a daily basis. This nuclear
family of three soon realized their way of life would be altered as they struggled to adapt to Steven s
condition. As their little boy continued to grow, the parents would enquire about genetic testing,
search for a school conducive to Steven s needs, and learn to embrace a lifestyle in which Steven
would thrive.
Ida and John observed their son s delayed reactions and lack of interest in engaging activities while
interacting with him. However, Ida explained that she was a new mother and did not understand fully
why Steven would not respond to her facial gestures. Ida began to question if Steven s condition was
related to her older sister s intellectual disability. Therefore, the couple sought genetic testing and
genetic counseling in hopes of explaining their son s behavior. The ... Show more content on

The family lived in the Midwest but eventually migrated to the Southeast. The Robertsons have
extended families consisting of aunts, cousins, and grandparents. However, the distance between these
families limits any physical support for Ida and John, but the extended family still offers love and
moral support. Once settled in to their new home, they were determined to find a day care center
where Steven s needs could be met. Their love for Steven is apparent as they seek the best care where
he can have teachers that are educated and trained to teach students like Steven. Eventually, John and
Ida chose a university based child development program that has the facilities to accommodate Steven.
The Robertsons are optimistic about this program and are eager to see how their son will prosper in

Significance And Significance Of Onrust Island
Introduction Onrust Island is one of the islands located in Jakarta Bay, along with Cipir Island, Kelor
Island, and Bidadari Island, all four are parts of Onrust Island Archaeological Park. Onrust Island
measured of a 120000 m², although the size is relatively small, Onrust Island is rich in archaeological
remains. The archaeological remains are varied, ranging from 17th to 20th century. Those are the
evidence of the long history of Onrust Island. The early notes on Onrust Island appeared in 1610 when
the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) requested approval from Prince of Jayakarta to utilize
Onrust Island for shipbuilding purposes. Subsequently, in 1615 a shipyard was build in Onrust Island
for maintaining VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) ships (Heuken 2016). The year of 1619

Shadow Reflection
The student I chose to follow for a shadow study is a junior girl who has been very open in class about
expressing her opinion. The student is in my cooperating teacher s Basic Geometry class during
second block. I picked this particular student because my cooperating teacher told me a story about
how last year this student yelled at a substitute teacher while he was absent and walked out of class.
Also, I have seen how this student interacts with her peers in my cooperating teacher s classroom. I
found it interesting to see how the other teachers work with her. This will give me an insight on how
to structure the class when I teach. I also have this student s younger sister in Algebra I. She is a
freshman, and I never would have guessed that they were sisters until she told me. The schedule is a
block schedule, so each class is ninety minutes except seminar at the end of the day, which is thirty
minutes. Since seminar is a study hall, I decided not to shadow her during that class.
I attempted to shadow this student on a white day because she has my cooperating teacher s class. I
showed up to the student s first block on Tuesday. The teacher informed me that the student usually
shows up early to class, but neither of us had seen her. When the bell rang, I decided to stay and see if
she showed up. I was informed that she was marked absent. That day in Communications, the students
were to have a reading day, which means that the whole ninety minute class the students were to

Consequences Of Brexit
Estimating the effects of Brexit
To forecast the consequences of the UK leaving the EU, we must make assumptions about how trade
costs change following Brexit. It is not known exactly how the UK s relations with the EU would
change following Brexit, which means that there is a lack of clarity over the consequences of Brexit
for trade costs between the UK and the EU. To overcome this difficulty, we analyse two scenarios: an
optimistic scenario in which the increase in trade costs between the UK and the EU is small, and; a
pessimistic scenario with a larger rise in trade costs.
The optimistic scenario assumes that in a post Brexit world, the UK s trade relations with the EU are
similar to those currently enjoyed by Norway. As a member of the European Economic Area (EEA),
Norway has a free trade agreement with the EU, which means that there are no tariffs on trade
between Norway and the EU. Norway is also a member of the European single market and adopts
policies and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Trade can have positive effects through increasing competition, which reduces excess profits and
promotes efficiency. Competition, access to superior intermediate goods and a larger export market
can also stimulate innovation. Recent research finds that dynamic effects may double or triple the size
of the static effects reported in Table 1 (Bloom et al, 2014; Sampson, 2016).
An alternative way to evaluate the consequences of Brexit is to use the results of reducedform
empirical studies of the effects of EU membership. Baier et al (2008) find that after controlling for
other determinants of bilateral trade, EU members trade substantially more with other EU countries
than they do with members of the EEA or EFTA. Their estimates imply that, if the UK leaves the EU
and joins EFTA, its trade with countries in the EU will fall by about a

Slipped Disc Complications
Roughly, 80% of the population will experience lower back pain once in their lifespan, while two
thirds of the population will experience neck pain. As ludicrous as it might appear, the ugly truth about
slipped disc complications is that they are increasing at an alarming rate. Back pain and neck pain are
the most common reasons of immobility in individuals under 45 years old. It is now very ubiquitous
and not only found in elderly, or after a traumatic happening. A slipped disc can happen throughout the
entire spine but is most common in the cervical and lumbar area. Inappropriate posture, unwarranted
or protracted axial weight bearing activities are the culprits; in other words, extended sitting or lifting
and carrying of hulking objects that cause uneven distribution of weight across your spinal joint or the
spinal discs. Over the time, axial loading (sitting or carrying weighty loads) can dehydrate your spinal

surgery or some years later, although they are most common in the first three months after surgery.
Furthermore, after surgery, the patient is at higher risk of further relapses (15% to 20% chance). Some
patients ended up having 2 or more surgeries on the same or a neighboring segment. The first few
years after the operation, one might feel very comfy and calmed. The ill starred realism is that the
efficiency of the spinal surgery does not last. Pain, paresthesia, stiffness and numbness are most likely

Shrek Satire
Every good movie, book, verbal story, has a beginning, middle, and end. The movie Shrek has these
and more. Based upon a typical Middle Ages romantic story, the 2001 movie Shrek, directed by
Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, Shrek is a children s classic that contains a mixture of crude
humor and innuendos. The movie Shrek fits the genre of Middle Ages romance, though slightly
altered for contemporary humor, as it contains the elements such as; a near perfect hero, supernatural
elements, and female figures who are maidens in need of rescue. Starting with the near perfect hero,
who the character Shrek resembles, appears to be the cliché, unlikely hero. As the hero, Shrek, who is

Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power
Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon
them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators
typically rule through fear, and don t usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes to
stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who
abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence.
Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no
education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King s African Rifles (KAR) and
quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962.
He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a few
assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin s loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the
leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the government
with blood, which isn t surprising due to his reputation (History.com).
Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off by
executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up agencies to
eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda s entire Asian population,
resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing,

Benefits Of Extracurricular Activities
In high school there are extracurricular activities and clubs that educators and parents feel offer many
benefits to students. In contrary to this I do not believe that the school should make students
participate in afterschool activities against their will. Reasonings for this are: Many students have
work outside of school and have no time, Many students play sports which is already considered an
extracurricular activity, some students will resent extracurricular if they are forced to participate in
them. On the other hand, colleges require a well rounded student who has taken extracurriculars.
One reason that supports my claim is the fact that many high school students already work and they
don t have the time for extracurriculars. According to an article by NewsOK, it states, The U.S.
Census shows that more than 1 in 4 high school students age 16 and older work. This shows us that a
good amount of students are already occupied outside of school by work alone. Meaning that students
who work would not have the time to join extracurriculars and it would be unjust to force a student to
join one. A student who works and has school is already learning very valuable lessons and ideas
about the real world and what it takes to keep and maintain a job and they pick up many skills by
doing this. To force them into extracurriculars to learn lessons and values wouldn t make sense
because they are already learning everything they need to know to keep and maintain a job in the real

School Life In High School
When I think about my freshman year to my junior year there are things that have been the same and
things that have been different. I have experienced a lot in the couple years I have been at senior, and I
have lots to say about the high school life.
The one thing that I would say never changed and kept the ram fam together is Nasty Nation. Nasty
Nation is what we call ourselves at games and many different activities. We have a twitter page that is
called Nasty Nation. I followed it my freshman year and it told me when the games were, what the
theme was and if I didn t go to the game they would post the score as the game is going on. The games
were always my favorite thing to go to in high school. I would dress up to my fullest ability and cheer
on the rams.
Another thing that never changed was the level of stress I had each year. Between homework, work,
school, family, friends, and a boyfriend life was not the easiest sometimes. I have been super happy,
anger, and I have cried at least accouple times in the past three years from being here. I m not going to
lie I had come to the point accouple times where I wanted to just give up and drop out, but I knew that
would not be a very smart thing to do. The amount of stress coming into high school was there and
coming out it s still going to be there.
The last thing that never truly changed was the people that go to Dubuque Senior High school. I am
graduating with the same people that I went to middle school with and some

usually forced to yell in exasperation at the TV screen, always hoping that the girl will hear me.

The reader follows along with the processes of Clara s mind maybe it was uttered by the girl who

Plagiarism Is Wrong
My assignment is to write a four page essay about plagiarism and why it is wrong and to be avoided.
According to the internet, plagiarism is taking someone else s work and acting as if it is original with
you . The actual author is not given proper credit for their thoughts, ideas, and concepts per the
internet dictionary. When the writing does not have the right notations people will assume that you
wrote it if your name is on the paper. If another person work is used provide quotes! Plagiarism is
considered academic dishonesty and a breach of writing ethic. It does not mean that you said it was
your work, but you acted as if it is yours. Some people plagiarize because they have a good memory.
They did not mean to or didn t recall hearing it or reading it. But if someone asks you about it and you
are silent, it is equal to acting like it your original work. One example of plagiarism is when you pay
people to do your work and turn it in. Copying a book or chapter is plagiarism. Cheating off of a
classmate paper is another example. Taking credit for someone s quotes. Asking your girl friend to do
your homework. Copying off your brother who took the class last year.
There are a number of reasons why plagiarism is wrong. Some people work hard studying and
thinking to come up with their writings ideas and you just take it as if it is your own. Next, plagiarism
is wrong because it is academic dishonesty. Also it will jeopardize your own work that you did from

Arguments Concerning Firearms
Firearms can easily be concealed, so individuals lean toward these types of weapons to use for self
defense. Unfortunately, criminals also use these types of weapons and are easy for them to steal;
firearms are easily available on the black market; this makes pistols appealing to criminals. Most
crimes involving firearms are committed with the use of a pistol; this is a serious problem in society.
Although most would agree that something must be done, no one seems to have the answer at this
point. Some individuals that support weapons believe that by completely banning firearms would be
the best way to protect citizens. However, banning pistols/shotguns fails to protect citizens, because
the laws are ineffective, banning firearms prevents individuals from an effective means of self
defense, and the law still don t solve the real problem, which is the gun owner.
Individuals that supports concealed weapons to be took on campus may claim guns deter crime, and,
while some statistics show this to be true, the opposite side of the coin also has evidence to prove this
is not the case. First, recent polls suggest college campuses aren t a breeding ground for violence, as
suggested by state legislators. Across the board and with most major parties of interest, groups say
they feel safe and secure at campuses; even those at reportedly dangerous locations said they feel
secured. Another reason why firearms bans fail to protect citizens is because they do not deal with the
real issue. The real issue behind firearm crimes and violence is not the gun itself, but rather ... Show

Twain s Huckleberry Finn and Kerouac s On the Road The River and the Road
One element that separates a good novel from a great novel is its enduring effects on society. A great
novel transcends time; it changes and mirrors the consciousness of a civilization. One such novel is
Mark Twain s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. For the past one hundred and fifteen years, it has
remained in print and has been one of the most widely studied texts in high schools and colleges.
According to Lionel Trilling, its success is due to Twain s voice of unpretentious truth (92) embodied
in the young narrator Huck Finn who reveals the hypocrisy and moral deprivation of society through
his innocent observations. It is a picaresque novel, or novel of ... Show more content on

Mark Twain s influence upon Kerouac is evident in On the Road as is suggested in biographical
details. Warren French states in his biography of Kerouac that Kerouac s first attempt to write a novel
at age 11 was an apparently quite slavish imitation of [Twain s] Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (4),
and Gerald Nicosia notes that Twain was one of the writers that Kerouac followed in his use of
idiomatic American diction (344). In addition, Kerouac himself warns his editor Helen Taylor in a
letter, no more irresponsible copy editing of my Mark Twain Huckleberry prose (131). He imitated the
naïve prose of Twain that only observes life and does not judge it, thereby creating an honest
reflection of life that ultimately affects the moral sensibilities of its audience.
One human aspect of life that is mirrored in the two narratives is the familial relationship between
each novel s two main characters. Huck would be as incomplete without Jim, as Sal would be without
Dean. Every place that Huck lives with Jim is his home. When they return to the island after finding a
corpse housebound and drifting, Huck explains, We got home all safe (Twain 72), and after the fog
separates them, he conveys, We said there warn t no home like a raft, after all (124). Their
relationship, symbolized in their emphasis of home, reveals the need for strong familial ties that
enable them to overcome the harsh social realities they encounter.

Why Does A Basketball Bounce Higher Than A Bowling Ball
Why does a basketball bounce higher than a bowling ball? Because it is made of different materials. A
basketball is inflated with air and made with a rubber covering that has a high bounce factor. Bowling
balls are made out of hard materials that don t bounce. Why is bounce good for a basketball and not so
good for a bowling ball? Using a baseball to play basketball or a bowling ball to play tennis doesn t
make sense. Different sports require the height from which the ball is dropped the ball s level of
ignition temperature the surface upon which the ball is bounced. The higher the ball is above the
ground, the more its potential energy. As the ball is dropped and gravity forces it downward, the ball
accelerates and gains speed. As the ball falls through the air, its potential or stored energy is converted
into kinetic energy. The longer the fall, the more kinetic energy it gains and when it hits the ground, it
bounces higher. As a ball bounces, it warms. An inated ball, like a basketball, bounces higher and
faster when the temperature is warmer. This is because the distance between the air molecules in the
ball increases, helping the ball maintain its round shape when it hits the ground. On cooler days, the
distance between the air molecules gets smaller, causing the ball to be less inated. So, it attains more
when it hits the ground. A lot of scientific research goes into developing the right bounce for the right
ball. Several other factors affect the way a ball bounces.

Grapefruit extract (GSE) is a natural antibiotic made from certified organically grown grapefruit. The
manufacturing process converts the grapefruit bioflavonoids (polyphenolics) into a very potent broad
spectrum anti pathogenic compound. In use for over 30 years this compound has been proven to be
very safe and effective against countless disease causing micro organisms (bacteria, fungi, parasites
and viruses). It is claimed to be effective against over 100 types of fungi and 800 bacteria.
How Does Grapefruit Extract Work?
According to studies, the activity of the active ingredient of the extract appears to develop in the
cytoplasmic membrane of the microorganisms. The active ingredients of the extract disorganize the

Iditarod Pros And Cons
Wshhhhh., the wind roars on the snowy Alaskan tundra. The Iditarod tends to spark some controversy
over many things, one being the dogs. The sled dogs, generally Alaskan Huskies or Malamutes, are
trained from birth for the the annual Iditarod race. The Iditarod, an approximately one thousand and
fifty mile race, starts in Anchorage, Alaska, where mushers compete to get to Nome, Alaska with their
16 sled dogs. In this article we ll go over the pros and cons of sled dog racing and my opinion on the
topic. The Iditarod is long, and can sometimes even be dangerous and cause injuries for the sled dogs.
However, that s not to say that they re not strong, as, sled dogs endurance often allows them to press
on, says Cristen Conger, in spite of minor injuries. she continued (Conger, 1). Besides that, it seems
that the dogs enjoy it, as sled dogs have their love of running (Arnold, 1) and will run for miles on
their own (Conger, 1). The sled dogs are bred for the harsh environment and can even survive in
negative temperatures, which are very common along the Alaskan trail. Although there are quite a few
pros, let s look at the other side of the argument, the cons. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With temperatures averaging 20 below at night, sometimes dropping to 40 or 50 below, (Arnold, 1) the
Iditarod can often be called dangerous . With the chance of being vulnerable to hypothermia and

less heat than lost. Besides that, at least 149 dogs have died in the Iditarod ( Dog deaths. , 1). Last but
not least, some people say that the dogs have no choice to participate unlike their human counterpart,
who willingly joined the Iditarod

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Mercedes Ad Of The Red Sl...
What is it about an advertisement that makes people want to purchase that item? Could it be the idea
of showing it off, personal attraction, or utilizing it in everyday life? The advertisement I chose to
analyze does absolutely stunning in doing all three and more. The Mercedes ad of the red SL class car
gives off a romantic look due to the color of the car and the caption on the left; and a rough and
powerful look at the same time from the rigid mountainous background. The images looks extremely
realistic, like every detail of it was picked up by a high tech camera. The main focus of the image is
the front of the car closest to the foreground, with it going out towards the other parts making it one
elegant picture. Ethos, Pathos, and logos play a major role in this ad to appeal to the audiences senses
and attract the viewers the ad is aimed towards. This ad does marvelous in using rhetorical techniques
to appeal to the viewer and persuade them to purchase this car. My ad has a mountainous background
with a tint of blue in it, giving the impression of it taking place in the morning and the feeling of the
cool breeze right before the sun rises. The sun can be seen beginning to rise on the right side slightly
above the car; with the full capacity of the suns light being obscured by the mountain in front of it. A
body of water can be seen cutting through the mountains almost behind the front of the car, adding to
the images beauty. There is a Mercedes symbol on the top right

Attending High School Narrative
My visions of attending law school were soon shattered due to the simple fact of money and time.
Although arguing is a guilty pleasure of mine I was more interested in the fashion, envisioning playing
dress up with famous designers. While my time spent in the apparel industry was vast and
knowledgeable I yearned for something more. Having the ability to reflect on my ten year experience
gave me the insight to conclude that a career was more important than just having a job. As luck
would have it my department was unable to renew a lease therefore terminating my position. Yes,
many would have had an emotional breakdown, but I took this heartache as a blessing. I got back on
that wagon, left my one month old daughter with a sitter and attended

The Pros And Cons Of Skateboarding Subculture
Our lecture defines a subculture as a diffuse social network that have a shared identity, distinctive
meaning around certain ideas, practices and objects, and a sense of marginalization from or resistance
to perceived conventional society. There are five requirements a group of people has to meet to label
as a subculture. First, it is having a diffuse social network. With having a diffuse social network, there
is a constant flow of participant in and out of the subculture by the members becoming more or less
like the subculture every day. Second, it s a shared identity. By having a shared identity, the members
are able to identify one another and see themselves as different from the mainstream. Third, they must
share a distinctive meaning. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

own brands to sponsorship from famous corporations to widely televise television series and sports

subculture was Pepsi in 1977 (Corporation Influence in Skateboarding). Additionally, skateboarding is
also a professional sport. The first organized skateboarding contest was The Hester ISA Skateboard

Hilton ITT Case Study Essay
1. Why might Bollenbach have opened his bidding for ITT at $55 per share? What was his likely
strategy?
The $55 value is on the lower range of the analyst eztimates, with a best guess estimate of $67.94.
Since the value of the stock had been below $45 for 4 months, the offer of 55 dollars represented a
29% premium to investors. Bollenbach knew that management would be resistant of any attempt to be
acquired, regardless of price, because of failed previous attempts to negotiate a friendly merger at year
end 1996. The 55 dollar benchmark created an expectation for ITT management to achieve that level,
or higher and the premium is enough to demonstrate to investors it is a real offer. Their support will be
key as they will have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bollenbach knew that the next steps would be critical or the deal to go through. As such it was
necessary to first research the investors and arbiters to have better negotiation tactics when the time
comes. The resistant board of directors had not changed in the mean time and would likely resist any
offer, including the unlikely event of another contender entering bidding. If the price of the stock fell
below the $55 range, or the Board of Directors changed Bollenback would likely aggressively
negotiate with shareholders to close the deal as quickly as possible.
3. ITT s value has changed a lot over the recent events. Prior to any offer when ITT s stock was
trading at 43 dollars, the stand alone value of its equity was 16.4 billion dollars. With the 55 dollar
offer to ITT, the company s value went up to approximately 21 billion. After the offer, the stock was
trading at $63.50, which gave the total equity a value of 24.2 billion dollars. With the proposed
trivesture proposal, the company would lose synergistic value as three separate companies, compared
to one large company. Examples of these include a number of overhead costs which gain economies of
scale. In addition, ITT likely has synergistic revenues coming from the fact that it operates all three
business segments. Analyst estimates indicate that the present value of the synergies whichh ITT

Scopes Monkey Trial
Big Boys The Big Boys Newspaper was historically accurate in that the newspapers date was 1929
and all the facts were correct. The newspaper felt more professional than most of the other newspapers
I reviewed and it felt like it was something that the New York Times might release. It was easy to
follow their train of thought and understand. The only issue I have with their newspaper is their font
seemed to change a couple of times. They educated me on the topics of the Teapot Dome Scandal and
the Scopes Monkey trial. The Teapot Dome Scandal was caused because of a lack of regulation in the
United States Government. Albert Bacon Fall had secretly granted the rights of the federal oil reserve

Scopes Monkey trial involved John Scopes, a high school science teacher, who was accused of
teaching evolution, which was a violation of Tennessee law. This law, which was passed in March of
that year, made it a misdemeanor punishable by fines to teach any ideology that denies the idea of
divine creationism. After being arrested, Scopes recieved the help of the ACLU to organize a defense.
After William Jennings Bryan heard of the trial, he volunteered to assist the prosecution. Soon after,
Clarence Darrow joined the ACLU in the defence. Early on in the trial, the defence was set back as the
Judge ruled against their attempt at proving the law unconstitutional. Outside of the courthouse there
was a carnival like atmosphere with monkeys and vendors sold Bibles, toy monkeys, hot dogs and
lemonade. The Judge ruled that the expert scientific testimony of evolution was inadmissible, as it was
Scopes who was on trial, not the law he broke. The next day, the trial continued outside, as they feared

Business Intelligence ( Bi ) And Business Analytics
Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) (sometimes used interchangeably) has
revolutionized the way businesses use data and can be contrasted, for the purpose of this essay, in the
following way: BI is raw data that has been transformed into meaningful information that provides
historical, current, and predictive views of business operations and environment, and BA uses data and
statistical methods to provide actionable information for decision makers. BI explains what is
happening, identifies the issue, and provides decisions to be made and BA explains why an issue is
occurring, what will occur, and what actions need to be taken. At the forefront of BI/BA technology is
International Business Machines (IBM) with a very broad array of related products and services.
Among the more popular products are its flagship analytics product IBM Cognos and its Predictive
Customer Analytics. IBM s Cognos Analytics allows business and IT professionals to prepare and
distribute all types of business reports from all departments with an organization and access pertinent
information such as financial reports, sales trends, production yields, and inventory on any device on
an hourly basis. IBM also offers a Predictive Customer Intelligence solution, an integrated software

Anti-War Movement During the Vietnam War Essay
Anti War Movement During the Vietnam War
As the Vietnam war heavily covered by the media, the devastating images were broadcasted across the
globe. People were able to watch the war from their armchair and many American people were
disgraced by the images of children dying and innocent people being shot dead in villages. A perfect
example of this, is the My Lai massacre which took place in 1968. The images appalled people all
over the world, especially American people who felt ashamed of their country s soldiers. Middle

Soldiers were most likely to die in the first month . I think that this would spark protest because as
soldiers were dying within the first month, it meant that even more soldiers had to be sent to Vietnam,
who would also be likely to die within the first month. I think that this would have led to protesting of
students, as they were strong believers of free will. The tour of duty in Vietnam was one year , Just as
a soldiers began gaining experience he was sent home . These two statements suggest to me that the
death rate of American soldiers would increase. Just as a soldier has adapted to the jungle and the way
of life in Vietnam, he would be sent home and an inexperienced soldier, not used to the jungle would
be sent to Vietnam and the chances are that he would not survive the first few months. I think the
veterans sent home from Vietnam, would have a huge impact on the protest movement, as many had
lost limbs and were scarred, some even emotionally scarred. The veterans would have told many
stories about the awful conditions of the jungle and the terrifying images that will never ever leave
their minds. This source definitely has sufficient evidence to explain why there was anti war

Hunger Is An Ugly Side Effect Of Poverty Essay
Introduction Hunger is a current social issue that plays a role in many American families who are
living in poverty. Although poverty is a major issue in its own category, hunger is an ugly side effect
of poverty. Living in poverty has long term negative impacts on the overall well being of children.
Morales, Sheaford, and Scott (2007) stated, hunger has an immediate impact on poor people because it
represents a threat to one s very survival (p. 368). Children living in poverty are susceptible to
enduring a level of hunger known as food insecurity.
Food insecurity was defined as the limited or uncertain availability of foods that are nutritionally
adequate and safe, or limited or uncertain ability to obtain acceptable foods by socially acceptable
means (Siefert, K. (2008). White, Hispanic, Black, and Asian families in the United States are all
faced with hunger. Thus, this may lead to many problems such as: poor nutrition, anxiety,
developmental and psychosocial issues, depression, and chronic diseases. In effort to reducing hunger
in America, federal food programs were constructed. The Food and Nutrition Service of the USDA
administers 15 domestic food and nutrition assistance programs (WHY, 2008).
Children that are faced with food insecurities may have trouble cognitively and physically in school.
To help in end hunger in schools, programs like The National Lunch Program and The School
Breakfast Program was developed. There are a number of immediate, as

  • 2. Analysis of Edmund Waller s Poem On a Girdle Essay Analysis of Edmund Waller s Poem On a Girdle At first glance, Edmund Waller s poem On a Girdle seems to suggest nothing more than praise of one woman s fair beauty and the speaker s love for her. After diving deeper into the text, however, it becomes apparent that the speaker does a much better job of praising himself than the woman. His love is more a lust for control and possession than a true declaration of sentiment. Waller uses extreme imagery and exaggeration to seemingly praise this woman. More importantly, however, he subtlety belittles her through tropes and diction. Waller evokes this image of her girdle to express his own desire to restrict this beautiful woman. It cannot be denied that Waller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everything he loved about her fit around her waist, her body. Waller is not interested in her brain, her soul or her ideas. He never mentions them. He also never mentions how she might think or feel about him. Waller praises this woman because of her beauty alone and as a result this seems to be her only worth. Within all this praise and admiration the woman is transformed into a status symbol. Waller brags, No monarch but would give his crown, His arms might do what this has done. Crown is an interesting word in this context. A crown is a king s status symbol, but a crown is also a British monetary unit, a way of measuring worth. With this statement, Waller seems to be saying a king would gladly give up his crown, his power, to put his arms around this woman as her girdle does. When viewed in this light the statement appears to be a compliment. Perhaps, however, Waller is actually implying that this woman is as effective a symbol of status as a crown and with her in his possession a king would no longer need to rely on his crown for power. In this case the word crown can be seen as an ironic pun. A crown denotes status but can also serve as a way of measuring monetary worth. The woman is beautiful, giving the man status as a crown gives a king. A crown in the monetary sense measures worth and this woman is deemed worthy only by her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Math in Music Music with Math Few people understand that music is actually connected to math. Most people i believe have more of an idea of what music is than what they know what math is. Music is scales and notes. Math is numbers and symbols. Deep in the core of music, music is really math. They also have a strange connection: Music is the only art form where the form and the medium are the same. Math is the only science where the methods and the subject are the same. Math is the study of math using math. Music is only created and experienced as music. Thus, there is a natural connection between mathematics and music: Both are experienced as pure objects of the brain, and both have meaning outside of the brain only by artificial connections. Math and music are both universal. Math is applied across the world to find solutions to everyday problems while music is played around the world and is present in every world culture throughout history. Both math and music rely on spacing. The amount of data or time a note is held connects math to music. A measure is relative to a line graph and a note to a number or fraction. There are many things that connect with music and math. which are music time, Reading music and fractions and last but not least the pythagorean scale. When you read a score also known as a music sheet or musical piece you read it like if reading math that will give you some informations of the piece you will be playing. The Robertson family was certainly no exception to these feelings when their son Steven was born. Ida and John Robertson were like most new parents when it came to expectations and interactions with their son on a daily basis. This nuclear family of three soon realized their way of life would be altered as they struggled to adapt to Steven s condition. As their little boy continued to grow, the parents would enquire about genetic testing, search for a school conducive to Steven s needs, and learn to embrace a lifestyle in which Steven would thrive. Ida and John observed their son s delayed reactions and lack of interest in engaging activities while interacting with him. However, Ida explained that she was a new mother and did not understand fully why Steven would not respond to her facial gestures. Ida began to question if Steven s condition was related to her older sister s intellectual disability. • 8. Shadow Reflection The student I chose to follow for a shadow study is a junior girl who has been very open in class about expressing her opinion. The student is in my cooperating teacher s Basic Geometry class during second block. I picked this particular student because my cooperating teacher told me a story about how last year this student yelled at a substitute teacher while he was absent and walked out of class. Also, I have seen how this student interacts with her peers in my cooperating teacher s classroom. I found it interesting to see how the other teachers work with her. This will give me an insight on how to structure the class when I teach. I also have this student s younger sister in Algebra I. She is a freshman, and I never would have guessed that they were sisters until she told me. The schedule is a block schedule, so each class is ninety minutes except seminar at the end of the day, which is thirty minutes. Since seminar is a study hall, I decided not to shadow her during that class. I attempted to shadow this student on a white day because she has my cooperating teacher s class. I showed up to the student s first block on Tuesday. The teacher informed me that the student usually shows up early to class, but neither of us had seen her. When the bell rang, I decided to stay and see if she showed up. I was informed that she was marked absent. • 9. Consequences Of Brexit Estimating the effects of Brexit To forecast the consequences of the UK leaving the EU, we must make assumptions about how trade costs change following Brexit. It is not known exactly how the UK s relations with the EU would change following Brexit, which means that there is a lack of clarity over the consequences of Brexit for trade costs between the UK and the EU. To overcome this difficulty, we analyse two scenarios: an optimistic scenario in which the increase in trade costs between the UK and the EU is small, and; a pessimistic scenario with a larger rise in trade costs. The optimistic scenario assumes that in a post Brexit world, the UK s trade relations with the EU are similar to those currently enjoyed by Norway. As a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), Norway has a free trade agreement with the EU, which means that there are no tariffs on trade between Norway and the EU. Trade can have positive effects through increasing competition, which reduces excess profits and promotes efficiency. Competition, access to superior intermediate goods and a larger export market can also stimulate innovation. Recent research finds that dynamic effects may double or triple the size of the static effects reported in Table 1 (Bloom et al, 2014; Sampson, 2016). An alternative way to evaluate the consequences of Brexit is to use the results of reducedform empirical studies of the effects of EU membership. Baier et al (2008) find that after controlling for other determinants of bilateral trade, EU members trade substantially more with other EU countries than they do with members of the EEA or EFTA. As ludicrous as it might appear, the ugly truth about slipped disc complications is that they are increasing at an alarming rate. Back pain and neck pain are the most common reasons of immobility in individuals under 45 years old. It is now very ubiquitous and not only found in elderly, or after a traumatic happening. A slipped disc can happen throughout the entire spine but is most common in the cervical and lumbar area. Inappropriate posture, unwarranted or protracted axial weight bearing activities are the culprits; in other words, extended sitting or lifting and carrying of hulking objects that cause uneven distribution of weight across your spinal joint or the spinal discs. Based upon a typical Middle Ages romantic story, the 2001 movie Shrek, directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, Shrek is a children s classic that contains a mixture of crude humor and innuendos. The movie Shrek fits the genre of Middle Ages romance, though slightly altered for contemporary humor, as it contains the elements such as; a near perfect hero, supernatural elements, and female figures who are maidens in need of rescue. • 12. Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators typically rule through fear, and don t usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence. Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King s African Rifles (KAR) and quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962. He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin s loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the government with blood, which isn t surprising due to his reputation (History.com). Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. • 13. Benefits Of Extracurricular Activities In high school there are extracurricular activities and clubs that educators and parents feel offer many benefits to students. In contrary to this I do not believe that the school should make students participate in afterschool activities against their will. Reasonings for this are: Many students have work outside of school and have no time, Many students play sports which is already considered an extracurricular activity, some students will resent extracurricular if they are forced to participate in them. On the other hand, colleges require a well rounded student who has taken extracurriculars. One reason that supports my claim is the fact that many high school students already work and they don t have the time for extracurriculars. According to an article by NewsOK, it states, The U.S. Census shows that more than 1 in 4 high school students age 16 and older work. This shows us that a good amount of students are already occupied outside of school by work alone. Meaning that students who work would not have the time to join extracurriculars and it would be unjust to force a student to join one. A student who works and has school is already learning very valuable lessons and ideas about the real world and what it takes to keep and maintain a job and they pick up many skills by doing this. To force them into extracurriculars to learn lessons and values wouldn t make sense because they are already learning everything they need to know to keep and maintain a job in the real ... I have experienced a lot in the couple years I have been at senior, and I have lots to say about the high school life. The one thing that I would say never changed and kept the ram fam together is Nasty Nation. Nasty Nation is what we call ourselves at games and many different activities. • 17. Arguments Concerning Firearms Firearms can easily be concealed, so individuals lean toward these types of weapons to use for self defense. Unfortunately, criminals also use these types of weapons and are easy for them to steal; firearms are easily available on the black market; this makes pistols appealing to criminals. Most crimes involving firearms are committed with the use of a pistol; this is a serious problem in society. Although most would agree that something must be done, no one seems to have the answer at this point. Some individuals that support weapons believe that by completely banning firearms would be the best way to protect citizens. However, banning pistols/shotguns fails to protect citizens, because the laws are ineffective, banning firearms prevents individuals from an effective means of self defense, and the law still don t solve the real problem, which is the gun owner. Individuals that supports concealed weapons to be took on campus may claim guns deter crime, and, while some statistics show this to be true, the opposite side of the coin also has evidence to prove this is not the case. First, recent polls suggest college campuses aren t a breeding ground for violence, as suggested by state legislators. Across the board and with most major parties of interest, groups say they feel safe and secure at campuses; even those at reportedly dangerous locations said they feel secured. Another reason why firearms bans fail to protect citizens is because they do not deal with the real issue. The real issue behind firearm crimes and violence is not the gun itself, but rather ... Twain s Huckleberry Finn and Kerouac s On the Road The River and the Road One element that separates a good novel from a great novel is its enduring effects on society. A great novel transcends time; it changes and mirrors the consciousness of a civilization. One such novel is Mark Twain s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. For the past one hundred and fifteen years, it has remained in print and has been one of the most widely studied texts in high schools and colleges. Warren French states in his biography of Kerouac that Kerouac s first attempt to write a novel at age 11 was an apparently quite slavish imitation of [Twain s] Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (4), and Gerald Nicosia notes that Twain was one of the writers that Kerouac followed in his use of idiomatic American diction (344). In addition, Kerouac himself warns his editor Helen Taylor in a letter, no more irresponsible copy editing of my Mark Twain Huckleberry prose (131). He imitated the naïve prose of Twain that only observes life and does not judge it, thereby creating an honest reflection of life that ultimately affects the moral sensibilities of its audience. One human aspect of life that is mirrored in the two narratives is the familial relationship between each novel s two main characters. Huck would be as incomplete without Jim, as Sal would be without Dean. Every place that Huck lives with Jim is his home. When they return to the island after finding a corpse housebound and drifting, Huck explains, We got home all safe (Twain 72), and after the fog separates them, he conveys, We said there warn t no home like a raft, after all (124). • 20. Why Does A Basketball Bounce Higher Than A Bowling Ball Why does a basketball bounce higher than a bowling ball? Because it is made of different materials. A basketball is inflated with air and made with a rubber covering that has a high bounce factor. Bowling balls are made out of hard materials that don t bounce. Why is bounce good for a basketball and not so good for a bowling ball? Using a baseball to play basketball or a bowling ball to play tennis doesn t make sense. Different sports require the height from which the ball is dropped the ball s level of ignition temperature the surface upon which the ball is bounced. The higher the ball is above the ground, the more its potential energy. As the ball is dropped and gravity forces it downward, the ball accelerates and gains speed. As the ball falls through the air, its potential or stored energy is converted into kinetic energy. The longer the fall, the more kinetic energy it gains and when it hits the ground, it bounces higher. As a ball bounces, it warms. An inated ball, like a basketball, bounces higher and faster when the temperature is warmer. This is because the distance between the air molecules in the ball increases, helping the ball maintain its round shape when it hits the ground. On cooler days, the distance between the air molecules gets smaller, causing the ball to be less inated. So, it attains more when it hits the ground. A lot of scientific research goes into developing the right bounce for the right ball. Several other factors affect the way a ball bounces. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to studies, the activity of the active ingredient of the extract appears to develop in the cytoplasmic membrane of the microorganisms. The active ingredients of the extract disorganize the cytoplasmic membrane, thereby preventing the uptake of amino acids. At the same time, there is a leakage of the cellular contents with low molecular weight through the cytoplasmic membrane. The pathogen is then inactivated.
