Cognitive learning theories are based on how information is processed in the human mind. According to the information processing model, sensory input moves to short-term memory, and if rehearsed, transfers to long-term memory which contains three types of memories: declarative, procedural, and episodic. Concept maps allow students to organize information in a visual web that connects new concepts to prior knowledge. Summarizing and note-taking strategies support cognitive learning theories by helping students process and retain important information. Cognitive learning theories can be applied through summarizing, note-taking, and using concept maps.
