OSBConf 2015 | Scale out backups with bareos and gluster by niels de vosNETWAYS
During this talk, Niels will explain the basics of Gluster and show how Bareos integrates with it. Gluster provides a Software Defined Storage environment that can scale-out when the backup storage needs to grow. With a live demonstration Niels shows how simple it is to setup a small Gluster environment and configure Bareos to use the native Gluster protocol.
An overview of Postgres-XC is provided. Postgres-XC is a free, open source, PostgreSQL based write scalable cluster. It runs on multiple servers, is fully ACID and consistent. Postgres-XC is a traditional relational alternative to cases where NoSQL solutions are being considered.
This presentation was given in San Francisco August 7th by Mason Sharp, one of the original architects of Postgres-XC and co-founder of StormDB (http://www.stormdb.com).

State of GeoServer provides an update on our community and reviews the new and noteworthy features for the Project. The community keeps an aggressive six month release cycle with GeoServer 2.8 and 2.9 being released this year.
Each releases bring together exciting new features. This year a lot of work has been done on the user interface, clustering, security and compatibility with the latest Java platform. We will also take a look at community research into vector tiles, multi-resolution raster support and more.
Attend this talk for a cheerful update on what is happening with this popular OSGeo project. Whether you are an expert user, a developer, or simply curious what these projects can do for you, this talk is for you.
Improving DragonFly's performance with PostgreSQL by Francois Tigeoteurobsdcon
Abstract
Since its creation, the DragonFly operating system had contained a giant lock in its kernel, preventing more than one thread to use kernel resources at the same time. This big lock was finally removed after the 2.10 release. I then started to look for a good way to test the multi-processor performance and scalability of the operating system. PostgreSQL seemed to fit the bill with its PGbench tool. This talk focuses on how PostgreSQL was used as a benchmarking tool to check and improve DragonFly's performance and scalability.
Speaker bio
Francois Tigeot is independent consultant and sysadmin doing *BSD and PostgreSQL since 1999. DragonFly developer since 2011
The talk is introduction to OSGi specification and its implementations. It summarizes corner stones of OSGi (bundles, services, components) and describes a technical background of OSGi implementations on a simple example.

Docker is going to change the way services are deployed by encapsulating them, thus provide a robust and complete continous development/deployment workflow. But how is docker impacting the compute part of HPC? Containerization uses kernel functions (Namespaces/CGroups) to encapsulate the processes, while allowing a fain grained customization of the compute stack; sitting on top of a stripped down bare-metal OS that provides basic services.
This sessions aims to explore if docker already is the 'virtualization' technique the HPC community is waiting for.
Could a distributed MPI job across multiple containers placed on different physical nodes beat a natively started job?

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
