Still life paintings depict mostly inanimate objects like food, flowers, and man-made objects arranged in a composition. They give artists more design freedom than portraits or landscapes. Still lifes from before 1700 often included religious or allegorical symbols related to the depicted objects. Modern still lifes may use mixed media, found objects, photography, and other techniques to break the 2D barrier.
