A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. AUDIENCE DEMOGRAPHICS/SURVEY
RESULTS
From my results, all the audience are aged 16-25 and
they like fiction which is good because then I can
create something that is mine and not base it on
something that might already exist.
The results for ‘what genre do you watch most?’ are
equal between comedy drama, mystery, sci-fi and
documentaries. Some young people will watch
documentaries because they want to learn/find out
about an event that’s happened. Whereas some
people will watch sci-fi because they want to learn
something that’s to do with science, but a story that’s
not real. Some people will watch mysteries because
they want to make them think what or who did
something. People will watch comedy drama just for
entertainment and to be socially involved.
50% of people say they watch TV on YouTube.
My video will be aimed at both men and women age
16-25 who enjoy mystery dramas.
3. YOUTUBE STATISTICS
• YouTube gets a total of 2 billion users every month. This makes it Google’s most
popular service.
• Up to 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube each day., 1 billion are being watched
on a mobile device.
• YouTube gets 500 hours of content uploaded every minute.
• 70% of watch time on YouTube comes from mobile devices
• This makes me want to upload my video to YouTube because it seems to be the most
popular platform to watch on, and my survey results show that more people watch
videos/Television on YouTube.
4. PSYCHOGRAPHICS
• The Psychographics I’m thinking of putting into my video are Belonger because it will
be set in a city, and it will involve achiever because it will involve a mystery which
needs to be solved.
• It will involve Type A Psychographics because it will involve a group or a person that
thinks about there actions and how it will affect them.
• It might involve a Needs driven psychographic because it might involve a scene that
needs action on an instinct.
5. USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
The use and gratification of the video will be for entertainment. It will be something
people will enjoy and it will be for escapism. It will be more tense than relaxing because
it involves a mystery – people will be wondering what or who the mystery is.
8. CORONATION STREET LEANNE FINDS OUT
ABOUT PETER AND CARLA’S AFFAIRStudio/Location
This scene is set in a house because they are about to have an argument and
it’s a private matter.
Angles
Most shots are close up so the audience can see the characters emotions
clearly. The distance shots show more of the characters actions when the
argument is happening (e.g Peter is messing around with a cigarette which
shows he’s anxious and worried about what might happen).
Lighting
Assisted lighting has been used inside the house because it’s dark outside. This
shows that the scene is set at night. If natural light had been used in this scene,
it would be too dark and we wouldn’t see what the characters are doing.
Costume
Leanne is wearing a smart red jacket which shows she has been to… The red
shows that she’s angry about what’s happened. Peter is wearing black which
shows remorse for what he’s done.
Props
Peter has a cigarette which shows he’s nervous about what might happen.
When Peter and Leanne walk into the house, Leanne slams her keys on the side
and her bag on the sofa which also shows she’s furious.
Audience appeal
This scene appeals to the audience because they want to know what will
happen next. Will Peter stay with Leanne or will he go to Carla? Or will Leanne
forgive him or will she throw him out? Or will Leanne Leave? I chose to watch
this scene because my video storyline is about someone who’s had an affair and
9. CORONATION STREET MAX GETS RUN
OVER
Studio/Location
The scene is filmed out on the street because it’s about someone being pushed into the street
and being run over by the van,
Angles
The angles are effective. There all close up so you can see what’s happening clearly. At first it’s
hard to tell if Max has been run over because the moment he’s run over is filmed behind the
van. Also, you see Nick(the guy driving the van) look in shock, but it still doesn’t show what’s
happened, leaving the audience to think ‘Has he run Max over?’. Then the family run into the
street to help him which makes it clear that he has run him over.
Lighting
The scene uses natural light throughout because it’s filmed outside. The light is bright
throughout making it clear to see what’s happening.
Composition
All the characters are placed in the road. All the characters are angry which could lead to some
violence/physical contact (e.g someone being pushed into the road and being hit by an
oncoming vehicle).
Audience Appeal
This scene appeals to the audience because you don’t see what happens, leaving them to
wonder what happens next. This will be useful for my video because it involves someone being
run over at the end leaving it on a cliff-hanger.
10. CORONATION STREET SARAH GETS
RUNOVER
Studio/Location
The scene is filmed out on the street because it’s set
around someone being run over.
Angles
Most of the shots are straight and close up to see the
impact of the accident in more detail.
Post production
The scene has been filmed using multiple cameras.
Each shot has been put together to make the
accident happen quick and suddenly.
Lighting
The scene uses natural light throughout because it’s
filmed on the street in the dark.
Composition
When Sarah and the oncoming van are in the middle
of the road, it’s easy to see what will happen because
it happens quickly.
Costume
The costume Sarah is wearing shows that she is on a
night out and implies that she could get drunk.
Audience Appeal
11. SCARBOROUGH TITLESStudio/Location
The locations are varied throughout the opening titles. The locations
are used to show that the show is set in Scarborough and people will
recognise it’s Scarborough (e.g The sea front scene)
Post Production
Each scene has been cut into 1-2 second sections. This is so the
opening titles don’t last a long time. The scenes have been cut to the
beat so they transition in time with the music.
Lighting
Natural light has been used throughout the opening titles because the
sun is out in every shot.
Composition
The word Scarborough is positioned well over the seafront houses
because it’s in a place where it will be noticed. If it was placed at either
side of the screen, it would make the scene look disorientated.
Fonts/colours
The font is stylish and easy to read. The white font stands out against
the blue background.
Audience Appeal
This appeals to the audience because the locations are recognisable
which tells the audience where it’s set.. I decided to look at this
because it gave me an idea of how to make my opening titles and
where to film at.
13. RAILWAY STATION • York Railway Station is on the East Coast Main Line.
It opened on 25th June 1877. The first train to depart
was a train to Scarborough at 5:30am. When it
opened it had 13 platforms and was the biggest
station in the world.
• The station was bombed during the Second World
War and 800 passengers had to evacuate a London
to Edinburgh Train which arrived in York during the
bombing raid. The bombing also killed two railway
workers.
• The Station is the halfway point between London
and Edinburgh.
• Platforms 1 to 8 are under the curved glass and iron
roof and can be accessed by the footbridge.
• In 2009 platform 9 was renovated and new lighting
was installed. Ticket gates were considered, but the
plan to install these were scrapped by the council to
keep the historic feel for the building.
• This is a location I plan to film at for the opening
titles of my video. This will be the first location I film
at because it’s one of the busiest locations. It should
show people walking in and out of the station.
14. THE SHAMBLES
• The Shambles is York’s most famous
street/landmark. It was best known for being a
butchers street and having slaughterhouses at
the back of each butchers shop. It was the
place where York people went to buy there
meat.
• As people walk through ‘The Shambles’ now,
they will find a range of shops and places to
eat.
• The Shambles is a location I’m thinking of
filming my opening titles at because it’s the
most famous landmark in York which a lot of
people will recognise. When I film this part of
the opening titles, it will show people walking
up and down the street doing there shopping
or looking around.
15. CLIFFORD'S TOWER
• Clifford's Tower is another great landmark in York. It’s the biggest castle that remains
of York Castle. There was a timber tower on the roof which burnt down in 1190
because of the mass suicide of the Jewish Community.
• The tower was rebuilt shortly after the mass suicide, but then more repairs to the tower
happened in the 13th Century.
• This is another landmark I’m thinking of filming at because it’s another tourist
attraction in York which people will recognise. When I film there, I hope to show
visitors walking up and down the steps going to and from the castle.
16. YORK MINSTER
• York minster is the place of Christianity in the north of England. Lots of people have
been attracted to the sacred place for years. The story of the minster goes back to over
2000 years.
• The cathedral has lots of medieval stained glass, more than any other cathedral in the
country. In 2018, lots of people could see the Great East Window for the first time in 10
years.
• This is another location I plan to film at because it’s another tourist attraction in York
which lots of people will recognise. This will also help to tell the audience about where
my drama is set.
18. HOW I WILL MAKE MY PROJECT
I will make my project starting with a list of locations.
I will make some floorplans showing where I want the actors to be and where the equipment will be placed. This will help
because it will prepare me more for the day of filming.
I will make a shot list saying where the actors will be and what actions they will need to do. It will include the angle the camera
will need to be at, the setting of the lights, the props that are needed and the type of shot it will be.
I will make a storyboard showing the sequence of the video. This will include the actions of what's happening in the scene. This
will also include where the sound effects need to be.
I will write a script saying what the actors need to say. This will include stage directions
I will need a list of equipment. This will include what I need for filming, and what I need for editing (software, hardware, sound
effects).
