The Big Bang Theory – Sheldon and Amy’s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
The group of friends travel to Stockholm, Sweden to see Sheldon and Amy receive their Nobel Prize
Medals for the discovery of Super A-Symmetry.
The scene uses the classical filmmaking method as the characters are played by professional actors
and it uses a small number of effects. One of the effects that the scene uses is an echoey sound
effect to create the feeling of being in a big open space such as an auditorium.
The scene uses comedy in a very light hearted way. An example of this is when Sheldon reveals to
the Nobel Committee that Penny is pregnant. Penny says she hasn’t told her parents yet, but thanks
Sheldon for congratulating her and Leonard. This shows that comedy is being used in a light-hearted
way as Sheldon accidently reveals some news which millions of people around the world can hear.
The scene uses psychoanalytic theory. An example of this is when Amy is giving her speech, she says
“Go for it, it is the greatest job in the world. And if anybody tells you you can’t, don’t listen”. This
tells the audience that people can do the things that they want to do and that dreams can come
true.
The scene symbolises that although Sheldon doesn’t always show it, he is really grateful, and he
really does love the people he has in his life and that he doesn’t want that to change.
