CLAYTRONICS
    •PROGRAMMABLE
       MATTER
OVERVIEW

Claytronics’ is the concept of the future
which aims to break the barrier in
transferring and transforming tangible 3D
objects. The concept basically is to make an
object to be composed of millions of
programmed nano scale robots and to move
them relative to each other in a controlled
coordinated manner to change shape and
other properties of the body. Claytronics
consists of individual components called
claytronics atoms or ‘Catoms’.
Programmable matter refers to matter which has the ability to change its physical properties
(shape, density, optical properties, etc.) in a programmable fashion, based upon user input or
autonomous sensing
Step -1:changing color Step-2:deforming

Step-3:forming with changes
                              Step-4:new model
GOAL…..
Our goal is to give tangible, interactive forms to
information so that a user's senses will experience digital
environments as though they are indistinguishable from
reality.
PARIO (media type )

•primary goal form basis for a new media type, PARIO
• a logical extension of audio and video
•reproduce moving 3D objects in the real world

The long term goal of our work is to
impart physical artifacts with such high
accuracy that our senses will easily
accept the reproduction for the original.
When this goal is achieved we will be
able to create an environment, which
      we call synthetic
reality, in which a user can interact with
computer generated artifacts as if they
      were the real thing.
Research team focuses on two main
                     projects:

Step-1 Step-2 Creating the basic modular
                      building block of claytronics
                      known as the Claytronic atom
                      or catom,
                        Designing and writing
                      robust and reliable software
                      programs that will manage
                      the shaping of ensembles
                      of millions of catoms into
                      dynamic, 3-Dimensional
   Step-3 forms.
What are CATOMS
•The Smallest individual units
of Claytronics is termed as
Catom. Each unit has
following sub-units
•CPU
• Network device for
Communication
•Power source
•Sensor
•Single pixel display
•Programmable adhesive
Planar catom Electrostatic latches Millimeter scale catom Cubes
Planar catoms:
Planar catoms test concept of motion, power distribution
 ,data transfer, communication..

Electrostatic latches:
Models a new system of binding and releasing the connection between
modular robots, a Connection that creates motion and transfer power
and data…..
Millimeter scale catom:
electrostatically actuated and self controlled..these are cylindrical
in shape instead of spherical..it consist of a tube and a high voltage
CMOS inside it..it has two layer planar structure which cause 2-D
structure to bent into 3-D due to stress created between the layers..
it rolls on passive stator..
Cubes:
Employ electrostatic latches to demonstrate the
functionality of a device that could be used in a system of
lattice-style self-assembly at both the macro and
nano-scale.

Future applications of claytronics
Medicine:
A replica of your physician could appear in your living room and perform an exam. The
virtual doctor would precisely mimic the shape, appearance and movements of your
"real" doctor, who is performing the actual work from a remote office. .
In situation of disaster..these objects could be used to perform
hazardous work and could morph into diff shapes to serve
multiple purpose, a fire hose can become a shovel, a ladder
can become a stretcher..etc..
Entertainment:
A football game, ice skating competition or other sporting event could be replicated in
miniature on your coffee table. A movie could be recreated in your living room, and you could
insert yourself into the role of one of the actors..
Household
You can just draw the design of what ever you want as shown in pictures
3-D printers
Some changes may occur in the basic life style itself with emergence of Claytronics. Even carry
a tab with a large display in the pocket and when you need it just expand it or if in a meeting if
some unexpected people come just convert a part of the table into a chair(may be the table
will become few millimeters less thick).
THANK YOU..!
