scheduler
• Leave time in the day for breaks
– Example:

student appointments, then virtual office hours
23. Appointments
• Use a scheduler to allow students to make

Editor's Notes
Teaching online provides benefits and challenges unique to the environment. We will explore establishing a work/life balance, managing tasks, and prioritizing your work. In addition, we will explore techniques to promote student success while optimizing the learning environment.
The challenge of keeping our students engaged and motivated is common across grade levels, subject matter, and all types of institutions and courses. Online courses, however, present a special concern. With students and faculty in contact only via the internet several new challenges arise.
Without face-to-face contact, faculty are not able to pick up nonverbal cues from students that can indicate they are disengaged, frustrated or unenthusiastic.
Faculty also cannot share their emotions easily and may find it harder to express enthusiasm, encouragement or concern.
The anonymous feeling of the online environment can make it easier for students to withdraw, participate minimally, or completely disappear from the course.
Students may enroll in online courses because they feel they will be easier and require less of their time. So before the course even begins, these students may be prone to disengagement.
On the other hand, there are several advantages to the online environment that make it easier to engage students.
The self-paced nature of online courses allows students to fit the work time into their schedule. Those who prefer to login to the course at midnight are free to do so!
Extrinsically motivated students can be engaged with quizzes and interactive features that offer instant feedback (need examples, such as the mineral ID lab)
The web offers tremendous possibilities for flexibility, interactivity and creativity. It is possible to create many types of engaging experiences.
Desire2Learn Video Note… Create a welcome note and post it in your news widget. Use it to provide video feedback to students, supplement course ware with video instructions or send personalized videos to groups of students, the possibilities are limitless.
**Possibly cut away to demo site to share screen and show a video note being made in the LE – K12 Advisory Course**
Its completely integrated into Learning Environment and can be accessed from either “Insert Stuff Framework Plugin” or “Video Attachments” menus.
FYI – some not all need to be stated ----Key features:
Intuitive recording interface: Adding recorded webcam video has never been easier As long as the browser supports flash properly with a functioning native webcam, the user will be able to record themselves with the click of a button. Incorrect flash settings are automatically detected and reported to the user for corrective action
Customizable content titles and descriptions: Customizing the title and description allows even users that are unable to see the recorded content to at least see the title and description, ensuring that they are able to understand what is going on in the video.
Search through existing content: With Video Note it is easy to find existing content to post using the search feature. This ensures that existing recordings are reusable multiple times by multiple users.
Utilization Reporting: Detailed utilization reporting showcases bandwidth usage and storage that can be suitable for billing purposes. Along with current usage, historical usage is also tracked to monitor trends.
New Video Note features
3rd-Party Video Upload/Transcoding
Video Note, accessible through Insert Stuff and various Record Video buttons, now allows users to upload video recorded from their own devices directly into Video Note to post as content within Learning Environment. Supported video file formats are MP4, FLV, F4V, and MOV. The default maximum size for a video is set at 5.0 MegaBytes, and can also be easily changed in the Media Platform DOME variable settings.
HTML5 browser playback support for non-Flash systems
User can view Video Note content directly on iOS device browsers, such as an iPad or iPhone or other non-flash devices
An Online course has so many resources that are available for content usage. Multimedia can be embedded, lecture capture for review as often as needed, web quest, demonstrations, simulations and more. The course should not be simply text on screen but something that stimulates thinking and engages students actively in the learning process. Embed or link to educational resources to engage students.
**Possibly cut away to live screen and show a course with a multimedia aspect – Astronomy course Solar System content**
In an online environment it is easier to disappear (skip class).
Provide timely intervention
Drop and email or better yet, set an alert that is sent out to students and/or parents when a student has not logged in for three days and tie and Intelligent Agent to it to automatically send a reminder
See next slide
It is important that the instructor is aware of student’s log in activity as well as submission status on assignments. There are tools to help you do this… Use the Class Progress screen for quick at a glance information -beginning and end of the week- run reports to see who has not logged in, set due dates in the course
Utilizing organizational tools, such as, due dates, agenda items, etc. in the calendar and upcoming events area of your course will help students (and parents) stay informed and aware of your expectations.
This also helps you manage your class more efficiently which is a time saver in the long run
Next Slide transition to QUALITY COMMUNICATION
Communication is so important – next slide touches on this
Just like in the face to face environment – staying connected equates to caring. If students feel disconnected online, it is highly unlikely they will be engaged in the course and the chance for failure increases.
Set your expectations and make them available in several ways – demonstrate them and post them (syllabus)
Having a place for them to connect is powerful and will go a long way towards their success
NEXT SLIDE IS NEW SECTION-MOTIVATION
Utilize communication tools effectively
Use a virtual office to hold once a week orientations for rolling enrollment or at the beginning of the semester for more traditional start / end date courses.
Using a virtual office also increases your presence in the course as students begin to associate a person with the feedback, assignments, activities, etc. associated with the online course. Building this relationship is important for your students.
Poll – Do you hold a virtual orientation? Yes / no
Do you have online office hours? Yes / no
Communication tools such as intelligent agents and video notes in emails
Shout outs are a quick way to highlight good work and the news widget allows for it to be broadcast via text, etc. if notifications have been set up to do so. When working with K12, having parents phone numbers associated with student accounts allows you to set up notifications that send news items to them. This is a nice way to keep them informed when students are being recognized as well as for items that may need their attention like a form going home.
Automate a message of encouragement and include a video note to make it more personal. These can be saved and used with Intelligent Agents to provide timely responses and lighten the workload to focus on your students
Utilize discussion forums to create a book club, tutoring area, or other collaborative discussion space. Blogs are useful for this, too. Hold a virtual office periodically for live club meetings.
Prioritize your schedule to complete daily activities more efficiently
Set up your schedule allowing time for other tasks so as not to overbook yourself with calls and meetings. Online scheduling software does this and provides links or embed codes to send out to students. You can create an Intelligent Agent welcome email and include this link so students begin the course with the understanding that they can schedule time with you.
Final slide ----- In closing, make sure that you honor yourself. FUSION IS NEXT AND LAST SLIDE
