CLASSIFYING
PLANTS AND
ANIMALS
HARIS AMIN
A GREAT DIVERSITY OF LIVING THINGS.
Diversity, refers to all the variety
of life that exists on Earth.
Ecosystem diversity refers to the
variety of ecosystems on Earth. An
ecosystem is a system formed by
populations of many
different species interacting with
each other and their environment.
Scientists have discovered about
three million different species of
living things. There are millions
more which have yet to be
discovered or have become extinct.
HOW IS THE
GREAT DIVERSITY
OF LIVING
THINGS CLASSIFIED?
Living things are classified based on their
characteristics. This is also known as Biodiversity.
Biodiversity can be described and measured at
three different levels: species, genetic, and
ecosystem diversity.
Species diversity refers to the number of different
species in an ecosystem or on Earth as a whole.
This is the commonest way to measure
biodiversity. Living things in the same group share
similar characteristics
WHY IS
CLASSIFICATION
OF LIVING THINGS
IMPORTANT
• It is necessary to classify organisms as, It helps in
the identification of living organisms as well as in
understanding the diversity of living
organisms. Classification helps us to learn about
different kinds of plants and animals, their
features, similarities and differences.
CLASSIFICATION OF
PLANTS
• Plants are mainly multicellular
organisms, Historically, plants
were treated as one of two
kingdoms including all living
things that were not animals, and
all algae and fungi were treated
as plants. Plants are divided into
two main group vascular and non-
vascular plants. They can be
further subdivided into groups
based on whether they produce
seed or spores, and whether they
are flowering or non-flowering
plants.
WHY IS
CLASSIFICATION OF
PLANTS IMPORTANT
• The classification of plants is
important to helps us remember
different plants (i.e. it is
possible to remember
more plants if we can
organize them into categories) It
helps in the discovery of new
species because it aids in
predicting what characteristics
newly discovered species have
if we can compare them with
already known species.
VASCULAR AND NON-VASCULAR PLANTS
• Vascular
• Vascular plants are plants which has vascular tissues to transport water, mineral salts and food.
Therefore they grow much taller than non-vascular plants.
• Vascular plants without seeds
• In seedless vascular plants, such as ferns and horsetails, the plants reproduce using haploid,
unicellular spores instead of seeds. The spores are very lightweight (unlike many seeds), which
allows for their easy dispersion in the wind and for the plants to spread to new habitats.
• Non-Vascular Plants
• Non-vascular plants are plants without the vascular system consisting of xylem and phloem
(vascular tissues). For this reason, non-vascular plants cannot grow tall and are usually found in
damp places. Although non-vascular plants lack these particular tissues, many possess simpler
tissues that have specialized functions for the internal transport of water. They do not produce
flowers or seeds. Instead, they reproduce by spores which are found in capsules.
Point: Vascular plants appeared after non-vascular plants
CLASSIFYING ANIMALS
In accordance with the Linnaeus method, scientists classify the animals, as they do the plants,
on the basis of shared physical characteristics. They place them in a hierarchy of groupings,
beginning with the kingdom animalia and proceeding through classes, orders, families, and
species. The Animal Kingdom is divided into two groups; those with backbones are called
vertebrate's and those without backbones are called invertebrates.
Vertebrates
They are the animals with backbone. They include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals without backbone. Most of the animal species are invertebrates. They
can be broadly divided into two major groups those with joint legs are gold arthropods and
those without joint legs.
CLASSIFICATION OF
VERTEBRATES
Vertebrates can be subdivided into five major groups:
Fishes, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals and Amphibians.
Mammals
• Their bodies are covered in fur
• They are warm-blooded
Fish
• Their fins, tail and streamlined bodies help them to move in water
• They have gills for breathing
• They have scales on the skin for protection
Reptiles
• They have lungs for breathing
• They are cold blooded
• Some live on land while some in water
Birds
• They have beaks and wings but not all can fly
• They have feathers
• They are warm blooded
• They lay eggs
Amphibian
• Adults have lungs and moist skin to help them breath on land
• They are cold blooded the young have gills to breath in water
CLASSIFICATION OF ARTHROPODS
• Arthropods are invertebrates which have joined legs, segmented bodies, hard outer coverings known as exoskeleton.
Arthropods are which includes such as lobsters, crabs, spiders, mites, insects, centipedes, and millipedes. About 84 percent of
all known species of animals are members of the Arthropods.
Crustaceans:
• Their heads are not clearly defined
• They have compound heads
Insects:
• They have three pairs of legs
• They have segmented bodies
Centipedes:
• Most have simple eyes
• They are mainly carnivores
Millipeds :
• They have simple eyes
• They have many legs
Arachnids
• They have four pair of legs
• The have simple eyes
QUESTIONS TIME
• How many species are discovered and how much are yet to be discovered or become extinct ?
• How is the diversity of living things classified ?
• In how much groups are plants divided ?
• Which type of plant were appeared on the Earth first Vascular or Non-Vascular ?
• Why is classification of living organisms important ?
• What are Arthropods ?
• What are In-Vertebrates ?
