3. WHAT IS
HEAT
EXCHANGER?
A heat exchanger is a device
used to transfer heat between
one or more fluids. The fluids
may be separated by a solid wall
to prevent mixing or they may
be in direct contact. They are
widely used in space
heating, refrigeration, air
conditioning, power
stations, chemical
plants, petrochemical
plants, petroleum
refineries, natural-gas
processing, and sewage
treatment. The classic example
of a heat exchanger is found in
an internal combustion engine
in which a circulating fluid
known as engine coolant flows
through radiator coils and
air flows past the coils, which
cools the coolant and heats the
incoming air.
4. CLASSIFICATI
ON OF HEAT
EXCHANGER.
1. Nature of heat
exchange process:
2. Relative direction of
motion of fluids:
3. Mechanical design of
heat exchanger surface:
• Concentric tubes
• Shell and tube
Multiple shell and tube
passes
4. Physical state of heat
exchanging:
Condenser
Evaporator
5. DIRECT
CONTACT HEAT
EXCHANGER
This is done by
complete
physical mixing
of heat and
mass transfer.
Examples are
water cooling
towers and jet
condensers in
steam power
plants.
6. Regenerative
heat exchanger
A regenerative heat
exchanger, or more
commonly
a regenerator, is a
type of heat exchanger
where heat from the hot
fluid is intermittently
stored in a thermal
storage medium before
it is transferred to the
cold fluid. To
accomplish this the hot
fluid is brought into
contact with the heat
storage medium, then
the fluid is displaced
with the cold fluid,
which absorbs the head
7. RECUPERATIVE
TYPE HEAT
EXCHANGER
recuperate is a special
purpose counter-
flow energy
recovery heat
exchanger positioned
within the supply and
exhaust air streams of
an air handling system,
or in the exhaust gases
of an industrial process,
in order to recover
the waste heat. The
image, right, shows the
three major
configurations
8. PARALLEL FLOW
TYPE HEAT
ECHANGER
These exchangers are
composed of many thin,
slightly separated plates
that have very large
surface areas and small
fluid flow passages
for heat transfer. ...
Another difference
between the two is that
plate exchangers
typically serve low to
medium pressure
fluids, compared to
medium and high
pressures of shell and
tube
9. COUNTER FLOW
TYPE HEAT
EXCHANGER
Counter heat current
exchange: Note the
gradually declining
differential and that the
once hot and cold
streams exit at the
reversed temperature
difference; the hotter
entering stream becomes
the exiting cooler stream
and vice versa. Counter
current exchange is a
mechanism occurring in
nature and mimicked in
industry and .... A
concurrent heat
exchanger is an
example of a
concurrent flow
exchange ...
10. SHELL AND
TUBE TYPE HEA
T EXCHANGER
As its name implies,
this type of heat
exchanger consists
of a shell (a large
pressure vessel) with a
bundle of tubes inside
it. One fluid runs
through the tubes, and
another fluid flows over
the tubes (through
the shell) to transfer
heat between the two
fluid
11. EVOPARATOR
An evaporator is a
device used to turn the
liquid form of a
chemical into its
gaseous form. The
liquid is evaporated, or
vaporized, into a gas.
12. CONDENSER
In systems involving
heat transfer,
a condenser is a
device or unit used to
condense a substance
from its gaseous to its
liquid state, by cooling
it.
