Dr. Lee s President Park
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Hong Yong Pyo received his B.A. and J.D. from Yonsei
University, and a Ph.D. in international relations from Oxford University. He has been serving as a
Blue House secretary for unification issues since his nomination by President Park Geun hye as the
unification minister on February 17, 2015.
Minister Hong was also a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification for four years
and served as the head of the Institute of Unification Policy in Hanyang University. Before
stepping into politics, he also worked as a professor of political science and diplomacy at Hanyang
University.
Dr. Hong first entered politics when he joined Park s transition committee in late 2012. With the
launch of the new administration in 2013, President Park tapped Hong as her presidential
secretary for unification. Dr. Hong was an assistant to President Park for two years during which
time he was well known for having played a key role in crafting President Park s policies on
unification affairs.
Minister Hong was initially nominated after President Park carried out a partial reshuffle of the
Cabinet on February 17, nominating three new ministers for unification, maritime, transport and
financial regulation. All the nominees were required to undergo confirmation hearings at the
National Assembly, however, only the prime minister had veto power. Having previously worked
with President Park on the inter Korean issues since 2010, he is expected

Oscar Romero s Religious Beliefs Affected His Work For...
Explain how Oscar Romero s religious beliefs affected his work for social change
I will not tire of declaring that if we truly want an effective end to the violence, we must
eliminate the violence that lies at the root of all violence: structural violence, social injustice, the
exclusion of citizens from the management of the country, repression, Oscar Romero said in his
sermon on the 23rd September 1979. Six months later, Romero was shot and killed. During the
1970 s and 80 s the El Salvadorian public experienced a brutal campaign of repression by the
military government, which claimed thousands of lives. The leader of the church, Oscar Romero
began to speak out on behalf of the victims and on the 23rd of March 1980, he made a ... Show

He was admitted into a seminary at 14 and then was eventually, in 1942 at the age of 25,
ordained a priest. Romero then managed to convince 5 radio stations to broadcast his Sunday
sermon allowing Romero s words to reach peasant farmers who did not believe they were
welcome in church. In 1977 Romero became Archbishop of Santiago de Maria. Then, On 12
March 1977, Fr. Rutilio Grande and two people Romero is travelling with are shot and killed.
Asa result of this, Romero cancels all Masses the next Sunday except for one, which was in front
of the cathedral for 100,000 people. He then refuses to attend any government event until the
murder is solved. Later that same year Romero became Archbishop of San Salvador, the capital
city. Thousands of people were going missing. The president of El Salvador failed to investigate
these killings, even after Romero demanded that he should.
In 1979 Romero presented the pope with seven reports of kidnapping, torture and murder. By this
time the amount of people being killed was more than 3000 per month and Romero could offer no
more to El Salvador than hope and faith.
On March 23, 1980, Romero began to speak out to the soldiers: I beg you, I implore you, I order
you... in the name of God, stop the repression! The evening after saying this, a paid assassin shot
Romero while giving Mass in the Divine Providence Hospital. Romero became a martyr and is now
regarded as saint in El Salvador. He remains a symbol of hope to

Civil War Legality
The United States legal system experienced immense change caused by the Civil War. The main
causes of the war included the obvious issue of slavery, but also that off states rights and brought
to question exactly how much power the federal government had. Despite the obvious moral
reasons for removing slavery, the process to do so faced issues in regards to legality. The legality
of slavery was discussed throughout various issues including property, state, and of course human
rights. The institution of slavery violated the due process rights to life and liberty of the enslaved,
however the removal of the institution of slavery violated the due process rights pertaining to the
property of the slave owners. The issue regarding the strength of... Show more content on

This also relates to the idea of southern states rejecting progression and modernization and seeking
to keep a traditional society. An example of states exercising their rights is The South Carolina
Ordinance of Nullification, enacted in 1832, which abolished tariffs on slavery put in place by the
federal government. It was argued that the federal government was acting unconstitutionally despite
significantly lowering the tariffs, and that states could nullify federal law (Hall, 246). This then led
to the ordinance of nullification (Hall,

The Power of Fate in Oedipus the King
The concept of fate has existed since the time of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed very
strongly in fate, which can be defined as either a power beyond human control that determines
events, or the outcome or end. In Oedipus Rex, King Oedipus lives and dies by fate. Fate influences
the entire plot, thereby allowing for some interesting developments that may be unpredictable to the
audience.
In Sophocles Oedipus Rex , fate truly is a huge factor in many scenes and events. According to
ancient Greek belief, the word of God was fate, and fate was the word of God. Therefore, every
event that ever happened was predetermined and unchangeable. Oedipus himself has been
completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For some fateful offense he committed at the feet of the gods, he was doomed to suffer a
horrendous curse, which was that his son would grow up to kill him one day and marry his
(Laius s) wife. Jocasta was also very much influenced by the mysteries of fate. She delivered a
baby who later delivered her many babies in an incestuous relationship, though she was not
cognizant of the fact when it occurred. She also did not hesitate to throw her baby simply because
the word of Apollo said that her son would kill her husband and marry her later. This is an example
of the fateful word of God whom the Greeks believed was the be all, end all (Elsom, 87). Thus, she
too was a victim of fate, as everybody else was.
Oedipus was not just fated by events beyond his control, but he was also fated by excessive
hubris and pride. He was so proud, he had to kill an old man denying him passage on a forlorn
crossroad (his father, Laius). He was so proud that he was blinded by his pride and could not see
the truth of his existence until the pride was finally shattered. He was too proud to accept the fact
that he could not avoid his fate. Such as when he accused Creon of conspiracy to murder Laius;
he was too blinded by pride to accept the fact that he himself could be guilty. You, plotting to kill
me, kill the king I see it all, the marauding thief... (Sophocles, 181).
Oedipus, though he believed that it was someone else, unknowingly brought corruption

Food In Japanese Food
We as humans, see food as just a necessity of survival. As we intake our meal for the day, it is
uncommon for us to think past the taste or temperature of what is being placed in our mouth; we
don t pay attention to the depth of what the food on our plate could mean to not only us, but to
others in the world. Unlike what most may believe, foodis an essential component of society. The
consumption, preparation and the values and customs that attribute to creation of these foods
symbolize a variety of thing in a culture. The way a culture prepares and eats its food shows us a
glimpse of what this culture may be like. The art that is involved in the process of a culture s
breakfast, lunch and/or dinner illustrates characteristics and the personality of that culture.
Though the Japanese are portrayed as fun, animated people in media, the Japanese are actual very
respectful, polite, structured people. This may not be something you can see in television, but if
you take a look at their meals and how they are prepared and consumed you can see how much
honor is put into the art of eating and how that symbolizes the personality of the culture at large.
Before getting into the consumption aspect of the meal, lets first look at how the food is prepared.
Japanese meals are highly structured events, and the different versions of a Japanese meal are
defined by the relative position of the major carbohydrate rice whose presence is culturally
important, (Ashkenazi, Jacob 2000, 82) No

Wilderness is the source of what we can imagine and what we cannot the taproot of consciousness,
commented author Terry Tempest Williams at the centennial of the National Parks Service
celebration in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 7th.
To celebrate the centennial of the National Parks, the National Parks Conservation Association
(NPCA) and The King s English Bookshop hosted an evening with Terry Tempest Williams and
The National Parks Band. The purpose of the evening was not only to celebrate the centennial, but
also to recognize to local authors and artists that desire to protect and share the beauty of the
nation s land. This event was open to the public and was hosted at the Rose Wagner Theater. Utah
is known for being home to five national parks and Salt Lake City draws many outdoor adventure
lovers in as home. Due to the teeming outdoor loving population the centennial celebration was
packed with people waiting to hear Williams speak.

take away one thing from this event and your new novel about the national parks and their
conservation what would you want that to be? She answered the following, This is what we can
promise the future: a legacy of care. That we will be good stewards and not take too much or give
back too little, that we will recognize wild nature for what it is, in all its magnificent and complex
history an unfathomable wealth that should be consciously saved, not ruthlessly spent. Her answer
was a direct quote from her own book, but still very powerful and something she would like to

Colin Powell s 18 Leadership Principals
General (USA Ret) Colin L. Powell s 18 Leadership Principals
During his distinguished military career, General Colin Powell exemplified what it means to be
a great leader. In a briefing given to the Outreach To America Program, General Powell outlined
18 principals that all leaders should strive to encompass. After reviewing his brief, three of these
principals stuck out Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off , The day soldiers stop
bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them and Perpetual optimism is a
force multiplier . These three principals resonate with my personal experiences in the military and
in leadership.
The first principal, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off , is something that I
struggled with early in my military career. I was eager to prove myself and accomplish missions
assigned to me at any cost. As my career progressed and I had soldiers assigned to me, I realized
that being a yes man is not always the responsible choice. When the safety and welfare of others
is put in to your hands you must put your own ambitions aside and consider the big picture.
Specifically, in my new role as a brigade food service advisor, I need to be able to... Show more

Either case is a failure of leadership. I have encountered a few cases of toxic leadership during
my career and this warning sign was present in each of those units. As a leader I make it my
personal mission to create a culture in which soldier s feel comfortable and confident enough in
me as their leader to bring forth their problems. It is important as a leader to focus on the big
picture but also not lose sight of soldier care. At the end of the day, you cannot accomplish the
mission by yourself, soldiers are the ones who execute

Why College Is Right For Everyone
Several ponder if college is right for everyone. Stephanie Owen, a senior research assistant at
Brookings Center on Children and Families at the time of the report s publication and she
currently serves as a research associate at the Urban Institute, and Isabel Sawhill, a co director of
the Center on Children and Families and a senior fellow in economic studies at Brookings, wrote
an essay called Should Everyone Go to College?, that gives insight on if college is right for every
person. While they show reason why college can be a smart investment, they also acknowledge
that it is not for all. They also bring attention to the fact that an enormous deal of thought needs
to be put into attending to college or not and all the questions that come after that decision. They
also mention that it is common knowledge that this topic is highly debated. Should Everyone
Go to College? provides an affective argument that features both sides of the debate. Sawhill and
Owen achieve this by utilizing logos (mostly) and pathos and ethos. Using a factual appeal along
with emotional and ethical appeals typically impacts the reader in at least one way. In Should
Everyone Go to College? Owen and Sawhill primarily use logos, or a factual appeal. Facts and
statics cannot be argued but to a certain extent. For instance, this, The best studies suggest that the
return to an additional year of school is around 10 percent. If we apply this 10 percent rate median

Reflection In Society
Have you ever wondered what it s like to live in the shoes of someone who s autistic or has
extreme social anxiety? Either of these things can make functioning in society very difficult, but
not impossible. At least that s what I believe, some people disagree with that. The author seems to
believe that is impossible to function in society if either of these things affect you. It is possible to
function in society, it just takes a lot of patience and practice. Haddon portrays that if you are
suffering from autism, then you can t function in society at all. He makes it so that Christopher
doesn t liked being touched by people so much, that he ll scream or hit someone if he s touched.
No matter what affects you, this is the behavior of a child. On page 8 it says The policeman took
hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn t like him touching me like this. And this is
when I hit him. Yes people with autism have a harder time functioning in society, but at the age
Christopher is, he should know that you can t just hit people when they touch you. On page 137 it
says So I got out my Swiss Army knifeand I flicked out the saw blade and I held it tightly in the
pocket that Toby wasn t in so that I could stab someone if they grabbed hold of me, . This is a
very dangerous thing to do, if Christopher does pull out his knife on someone, then he could get in
a lot of trouble. This is an extreme reaction to someone just touching him, it s very childish. In the

These are specific effects of window film proposed by them; 1. One square meter of a low e
wood window, the type with the smallest carbon footprint, has a carbon cost of 253 kilograms.
The carbon cost of Solar Gard window film is less than one kilogram per square meter. 2. Solar
Gard window film saves 1001 times more GHG emissions from entering the atmosphere than is
used and/or created during its manufacture. 3. Solar Gard window film installed between 2007

reduced carbon emissions. 2.3 Emission Control Speaking of carbon emissions, there are specific

Our countries motives are not completely justified.
Motives
The plan to launch cyber warfare on the Iranians began after a negotiation took place between the
Europeans and The United States. This was due to Iran s plan to continue their production of
uranium. Iran resumes uranium enrichment at Natanz after negotiations with European and
American officials flounder. (Gates, 2012). Our nations armed forces, CIA, and NSA worked
together to create a classified cyber attack to be launched on Iran s nuclear enrichment program
(Gates, 2012). The United States fear of nuclear weapons from Iran was the only motive for the
cyber attack, and was continued once President Obama came into office.
This attack was specifically intended to slow down the productions of their Nuclear Power Facility.
Cripple Iran enough to buy the United States more peace . Unfornatetly STUXNET is more
powerful then intended and many areas outside of Natanz were hit. Subsequently following the
attack on Iran, it was stated that 1,000 IR 1 centrifuges
(Shekaraubi, 2014) that were needed to develop uranium at the Iranian Natanz facility was impaired
throughout the breach. This would include but is not restricted to 30,000 IP addresses in Iran,
several manufacturing sites in Hormuzgan and the control system of Kharg Island which handles
the vast majority of Iran s crude oil exports. (Shekaraubi, 2014).

Violence, Power, and Goals in the Hebrew Bible and The...
Violence is a means to an end. Violence is not something most humans resort to for enjoyment.
Violence is, however, the right thing to be done in certain situations. With violence, comes great
power. Power and violence walk together, hand in hand. When violence is exhibited, the power of
the individual is shown to those around him. In both the Hebrew Bible and The Iliad, violence is
depicted as a mode to reach goals. The reason for this is that violence allows an individual or a
deity to flaunt their powers, while they simultaneously achieve their personal and communal
ambitions. Just like how mortals have their own goals, deities also have an agenda. God, in the
Hebrew Bible, has only two goals: to have humans obey Him blindly and to... Show more content

Sacrifices are, in nature, very violent. Innocent blood is spilled to please the vengeful God. In
Exodus 12, the Lord struck down all the first born in the land of Egypt, from the first born of
Pharaoh who sat on the throne the first born of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the
first born of the cattle (Exodus 12:29). God did all that just because the Pharaoh stubbornly
refused to let the Israelites leave his country. The immense sacrifice of the first borns of man
and beast was an act of violence that led the exodus of the Israelites. The mass murder of the
Egyptian people and livestock also proves to the Pharaoh the great power of God, a power that
would have remained unseen if not for the plagues and the executions. For after the Pharaoh
witnessed the death of at least one man or one beast in each Egyptian s household, he said, Up,
depart from among my people...Go, worship the Lord as you said (Exodus 12:31). With this
final act of violence, God helped reach the Israelites communal goal: to leave the oppressive
Egypt and to enter the liberal Promise Land of Canaan. Because humans were created in God s
image, it makes perfect sense that humans will use violence as a way to achieve their own goals,
just like what God does. In I Samuel, David had one goal during the Goliath episode: to let this
whole assembly (the soldiers) know that the Lord can give victory without sword or spear. For

Income Smoothing Methods
Introduction How do you explain to an intelligent public that it is possible for two companies in
the same industry to follow entirely different accounting principles and both get a true and fair
audit report? M. Lafferty Nowadays, as our economy is facing possible everyday crises, managers
undergo an increasing pressure in order to keep their company s earnings stable. Shareholders and
analysts expect companies to meet forecasted goals and not to deviate from these. Especially,
reliable companies are to report positive results and shall not present any surprises . Managers
therefore often turn to their accounting departments for help, whose job it then is to improve the
bottom line by changing the information shown in financial... Show more content on

However, many companies also amortize so called one time expenses by listing them as a capital
expense (on C/F) and paying the cost by amortization, hence improving the company s net income.
The Classification Method This method defines whether or not a transaction is classified as
operating income or non operating income. The Matching Book Method The Matching Book
Method allows managers to decide in which period transactions are to be recorded. Thus, this
method is the most powerful method in income smoothing. The Channel Stuffing Method The
Channel Stuffing Method is a tool used to inflate sales within a company by selling goods to
customers that did not order them in first place. This leads to more positive sales figures at first
(which can then be stated) but has several disadvantages in the long run. Conclusion Smoothing of
income is an undeniable practice used by accountants to favour the companies current needs,
therefore it can be showing rather higher or lower earnings than the actual latter. There are several
methods through which this practice is applied depending on the preferences as well as on the
requirements of the people interested in the financial statements. Approaching income smoothing
from the legality perspective, one would surely come by not only examples of both legal and illegal
aspects, but also by a gray area, where it

When dealing with a problem, the best approach towards solving is to find and fix the root of the
problem. So why is college tuition, so high? One reason is the loss of state funding. The lucky
generation are the baby boomers in how they benefited from state funding which made it easier
to attend college (Campos). Colleges relied heavily on state funding and they had to find a way
to make up for all the money they stopped receiving. The best solution was to raise tuition every
year and this sparked the inflation that millions of people deal with every year. Tuition used to
be affordable and more people were able to graduate as a result. So now that people are forced to
pay much more in tuition, it s safe to assume that every bit of that extra money is being used to
enhance students education. Sadly this is false and here s the reason why. The maintenance and
supervision of a college is handled by college administrators. Several years ago, there were not a
handful of administrators that worked present on campus, but as time progressed more and more
administrators were being hired. These administrators get paid very well and its part of the reason
why tuition is high (Ginsberg). Overall, tuition has reached an all time high and without a doubt
this causes a lot of struggles for students and parents.
A majority of students who attend college are

Life Of A Slave Girl
I a person of the North who read the INCIDENTS in the LIFE of a SLAVE GIRL by Linda Brent
am very surprised by the life story of Brent. Although I knew of slavery I did not fully grasp how
horrid that the slaves were treated. Northern do not have the plantations that needed to be worked
over. Instead, we have factories and trade, people that are paid for the work that they do. In the
very first chapter it is hard to read, in the very first words that state not where, and when Brent was
born but that she was born into slaveryis surprising and saddening to me. (Linda Brent, 1861, p.
413) Records like this are very well kept in the North everyone has access to theses records, they

(Linda Brent, 1861, p. 413) I can truly not know how one person would not know that they are a
slave until they are six years old, here in the North it would stand out plain as the day. The fact
that Brent s father s main goal were to buy his children out of the life of slavery is saddening, a
person should never have to buy one s freedom especially their children. Slaves having to care
for their Mistress and Masters children and their own suffering because of it is horrible. As
Mothers weaning their babies from nursing early so the mistresses child could feed better is bad,
even if the Mistress is kind to the slaves it is not right to do. Dr. Flint seems like the last person
someone would want to know, let alone be owned by. The reason Flint gives for not selling or
giving freedom is the worst lie that someone could come up with. Saying that he could not sell
Brent because she was his daughter slave was horrible to think about. (Linda Brent, 1861, p. 428)
Another thing that was hard to think about was the slaves were told that all northerners did not like

Target Costing
Target Costing on Mercedez Benz
Mercedes Benz (MB) is one of the world s most successful car manufacturers since its
establishment in 1886. They used target costing in the design and production of one of its
products, the M Class, which is a new sports utility vehicle model, in response to their first time
suffering loss in 1993 because of cost inefficiency and problems with material purchasing and
adapting to market changes. MB started developing a range of new products such as the C Class
in 1993, the E Class in 1995, the new sportster SLK in 1996, and the A Class and M Class All
Activity Vehicle (AAV).
The issues could be raised from this case are how MB reacts to the environmental changes by

Therefore, MB should work its best to derive a comprehensive category list prior to index
development. Finally obtain the target cost through the Target Costing equation. Importance Index
(table 4) shows the degree of importance towards customers of each component which may be
considered when purchase of a new MB product while Target Cost Index (table 5) is a measure for
the deviation of importance (which the component should be given) and component cost. ABC is
an ideal instrument to meet this requirement. Therefore, Tartget Costing was used in the AAV
production project. However, there are some problems existing in the development of those indexes
as well as the way MB was interpreting them. Meanwhile, MB could use achievement ratio and cost
reports to monitor the performance of Kaizen Costing. MB then compared the target cost with
drifting cost to find out the cost reduction targets for each function group. In order to achieve this,
MB should seek to develop certain organizational arrangements (through policies or culture) to
foster a spirit of continuous improvement.
Finally, i would like to recommend MB to always maintain a good relationship and cooperation
with all those suppliers since MB become rely on them to achieve target costing. Indeed, as a leader

Racism in Divine Wind by Gary Disher Essay
Today I want to address the issues of the novel Divine Wind authored by Gary Disher.
Throughout the novel many problems occur. Some of the main problems are racial and equality
issues. Events in this book show how prejudice and intolerance can ruin numerous friendships and

Australia in this time was quite defensive about whom they trusted. Even Japanese Australians, they
had an issue towards them simply because the higher authorities thought they would turn on them.
Disher tries to imply his view that loyalty within the authorities was at high demand and this
portrays the distrust they held against anyone who questioned them. The judgment against the
aboriginal and Japanese people increased during the war period. An example for this would be the
name calling by the locals at the Penrose family even though they stayed loyal towards each other
and their friends.
ABORIGINAL RACISM
In the chapter Desired earth there was a discussion between Morrissey who is a military
commander, Lester Webb, Carl and Alice who takes care of derby whom is aboriginal.
The abos are going to be a liability if the japs land Morrissey to Carl
And if the abos cause trouble we can shoot them, no questions asked Lester to Alice

Question:
Australia is now the only Western democracy without a bill of rights. Its law makers have
consistently declined to introduce a bill of rights, either legislative or constitutional. Recently, in
2009, the Australian Government commissioned the most extensive consultation on human rights
issues in Australia s history and then flatly rejected the consultation committee s recommendation
that a Human Rights Act be introduced. To observers in Europe where courtesy of the European
Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), human rights are woven deeply into the fabric of

Voice and Language in Their Eyes Were Watching God
In one way or another, every person has felt repressed at some stage during their lives. Their Eyes
Were Watching God is a story about one woman s quest to free herself from repression and explore
her own identity; this is the story of Janie Crawford and her journey for self knowledge and
fulfillment. Janie transforms many times as she undergoes the process of self discovery as she
changes through her experiences with three completely different men. Her marriages serve as
stepping stones in her search for her true self, and she becomes independent and powerful by
overcoming her fears and learning to speak in her own, unique voice. Zora Neale Hurston

Janie s first movement toward self awareness occurs shortly
thereafter, when she becomes fascinated by the blooming of leaf buds under
the pear tree. Here, Hurston uses the third person narrative in a speaker s
voice that invites the reader into Janie s soul. For example, the narrative
voice portraying the pear tree incident seems to have a nature somewhat
intimate to Janie s:
the rose of the world was breathing out smell. It followed her through all
her waking moments and caressed her in her sleep. It connected itself with
other vaguely felt matters that had struck her outside observation and
buried themselves in her consciousness. (24).
Hurston brilliantly combines an intimate voice with the omniscience of a
third person narrator for a vivid denotation of the beginning of Janie s
maturity and the initial stage in her development as a woman; she creates a
powerful description of a young girl s sexual awakening. However, just as
Janie is emerging as an individual and as a woman, her self discovery is
crippled by Nanny s fear of this maturity. Nanny desires to marry Janie off
as soon as possible, so that she is protected in a financially

Themes In Fire And Flood
In the book Fire and Flood by Victoria Scott, the main character Tella is faced with many
challenges that she decided to take on. These challenges she took were for her brother Cody and
curing his sickness. They were taken place in the middle of a jungle, desert, and mountain ranges
where many dangers were presented. She faced many situations along this expedition, but she never
abandoned the thought of being able to help her brother. One theme that can be supported
throughout the book by many critical scenes is that it takes a lot of strength and perseverance to
make sacrifices for a person that is important.

the surface, each time I draw in a breath , I wonder if it ll be my last (Scott 154). This quote
connects to the theme because it shows how she had to go through rough times that were worse
than others, but she still never gave up. This supports the theme because it is a good
representation of what she had to go through in the race. In addition, the author explains how
there were more dangerous situations outside of the natural obstacles in the race. Specifically,
the book states I look over my shoulder and gasp. The strange men are chasing us (Scott 155).
This part of the book is very important because it shows how other things were there , such as
unsafe people who were also another risk to their lives at this time. This shows that Tella had to be
very cautious of her surroundings and who was near her. After all, Tella went on this race for her
brother knowing the conditions she was going to be put through, which shows her strength and
perseverance.

Washington In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave
In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave, readers are first introduced to Madison Washington, an
enslaved black man, through the perspective of the narrator, Mr. Listwell, a white, northern
traveller. It is through this description of his physical features that we are able to catch a glimpse
of Washington s personality one which defies and breaks stereotypes of black men in the
nineteenth century. The first thing one notices about the manner in which Washington is
described is the use of contradictory, yet complementary, descriptors. Listwell says Washington is
of manly form, showing Herculean strength. It is also said that a child might play in his arms, or
dance on his shoulders and that his broad mouth and nose spoke only of good nature and
kindness. One other specific phrase that stands out is his face was black, but comely. This is, in
its original biblical usage, a phrase used to describe a woman namely, her attractiveness though
here, it s being used to describe a man. The fact that a white man is depicting a man, especially a

Essay On Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership consists of four components, being charisma or idealized
influence, inspiration and vision, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration
(Marshall, 2011). All of these components are of equal importance when employing
transformational leadership, but the component that I find most personally applicable is
charisma or idealized influence. As a student nurse, my surroundings are always changing, one
moment I am on the labor and delivery unit with a group of peers and the next week I am with a
totally different group of peers in a mental health facility. Being surrounded by an ever changing
group with ever changing goals and objectives I feel as though it is a challenge to emerge as a
leader. It is my personal belief that in order to become a leader, some sort of personal connection
must be forged, and this can be difficult with a revolving schedule. Conversely, it is also my
opinion that despite how well one knows the people that they are surrounded by, if one knows
themselves and their beliefs and values, their charisma will be evident. Being charismatic is about
being a role model and inspiring others to follow based on the personal qualities that one

Vince T. Lombardi s motivational speech he evokes the diction of winning, an appeal to the

and being number one is everyone s goal no matter what they do.
Vince Lombardi uses diction to strengthen and make clear that winning is everyone s goal no

an all the time thing . He used thing in that first sentence referring to winning, and that diction
made winning more of an object and something people can take. To make clear that winning is
everyone s goal he transitioned to, You don t win once in awhile; you don t do things right once in

win as his diction to make sure people understand that he believes winning is everyone s goal.

Types And Diagnosis Of Depression
In a world today where antidepressant medications seem to be handed out like candy, could it be
that not every person who says they are depressed needs medication? Is a full on antidepressant
the best solution for a person who is displaying the symptoms of a very mild form of depression?
In order to explore this topic more fully, we must establish the definition and diagnosis of
depression. According to the DSM V, depression is defined and diagnosed with at least five of
the following symptoms during a two week period: Depressed most of the day, nearly every day
Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities most of the day nearly
every day Significant weight loss/gain or increase/decrease in appetite when no dieting is present
Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate
guilt Diminished ability to think, concentrate, or indecisiveness nearly every day Recurrent
thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or suicideattempt or a specific
plan for committing suicide
These symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other
important areas of functioning. The symptoms are not due to the direct physiological effects of a
substance or a general medical condition (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

Thomas Polk in Mecklenburg County, 1750 1800
With over 250 years of history as a county in North Carolina, Mecklenburg County has an extensive
and fascinating story to tell. Established in 1762, the county that I call home has been a part of this
country since before we gained our independence from Great Britain. When most Americans hear
the surname Polk, they automatically think of our nation s eleventh president, James Knox Polk. A
fraction of those people are able to tell you that James was born in Mecklenburg County and spent
the first ten or so years of his life in present day Pineville. Very few, however, could tell you of
James great uncle, Thomas Polk, who was crucial to the founding and progress of Mecklenburg
County.
Through my research, I have found numerous Polks who were either born in, raised in, or simply
moved to Mecklenburg County. Some of these people had a minor impact on the area, but
Thomas Polk influenced Mecklenburg County in a much bigger way. Polk had numerous
accolades. Among them are Revolutionary War soldier, local political leader, prominent land
surveyor, and government executive. In this paper, the time period is restricted from circa 1750
until circa 1800. These approximate dates correspond to the arrival of Thomas Polk to
Mecklenburg County, and to his death. Nearly every aspect of this era of Mecklenburg County
history has been touched in some aspect by Thomas Polk.

punished for what he had down and was banished from heaven, again. Before he finally left he
killed the Goddess of Food, whose limbs are said to have been turned into the seeds of useful plants.
Once out of the heavens, Amaterasu began to pacify the celestial realm. Once concluding this she
turned to the earth, the Islands of Japan. After three absorptive attempts to establish her rule she
sends her grandson Ninigi down with eight of his companions to assume the power on earth. Ninigi

Essay about Taxi Driver, Directed by Martin Scorsese
Taxi Driver
New York City that is depicted in Taxi Driver seems to be too real to be true. It is a place where
violence runs rampant, drugs are cheap, and sex is easy. This world may be all too familiar to many
that live in major metropolitan areas. But, in the film there is something interesting, and vibrant
about the streets that Travis Bickle drives alone, despite the amount of danger and turmoil that
overshadows everything in the nights of the city. In the film Taxi Driverdirector Martin Scorsese
and writer Paul Schrader find and express a trial that many people face, the search for belonging
and acceptance.
The character of Travis Bickle roams the nights in his taxi cab, and witnesses all of this open sewer ,

Travis thinks he wants to live a normal life, and get out of the hell he lives in, but not quite sure
how to go about getting out of this hell. Travis is also moderately insane but, nevertheless he
devises a plan to save the young prostitute, Iris, and himself from his taxi cab prison. The beauty
of this film climaxes when Travis goes to free Iris from the evil clutches of her pimp, Sport.
When Travis approaches Sport, a second time, a question arises, Why is Travis paying this
grotesque man another visit? but, then all is made clear when Travis draws his pistol and attempts
to liberate Iris from her prison.
The entire scene gives a strange feeling of redemption. Travis has redeemed himself from the
world that he lived in by ridding it of this evil and freeing something that has potential to become
something very beautiful. This redeeming feeling is reinforced when Scorsese s extreme overhead
angle is shot, frozen, and begins to retrace the path of blood and bodies that Travis has defeated to
save his damsel in distress, his Rapunzel, Iris.
The film ends with Travis, a hero for the day, returning to his job as a cabbie. One can t help but
wonder is this outcome what really happened, or is it what Travis thought would ve happened.
Travis receiving letters from the grateful parents of Iris for returning her

My Passion For Comedy
When I first glanced at the prompts and saw the one that asked me to speak of a passion of mine,
I knew that this was definitely the prompt I had to choose. My passion is my love for comedy.
Comedy has always been a huge part of my life and continues to be to this day. It has
encompassed my life for as long as I can remember. Whether I was looking to others to make me
laugh, developing laughter from being around my family, or myself making others laugh the
memories are embedded in my mind. With these memories I have come to the conclusion that I
have always found a way to make others laugh. I really don t know if I make people laugh to
gain friends or some other reason; whatever it may be, it has sparked a realization that this is
something I love to do. When I first think about why I have a passion for comedy, I think of it as
being powerful and special. It is one of those things that can unite people. Laughter doesn t
discriminate, it doesn t matter your ethnicity, religion, political opinion, etc., this is what I
believe makes it so captivating. With humor you can as least for a little while forget about
everything going on around you, regardless of the simplicity or complexity of the situation. It is a
way for us to keep our sanity and gives us the opportunity to come together and put serious issues
aside or be able to look at those issues in a less hostile manner. Laughter is one of those things
everyone can appreciate, and should have a healthy amount of

Symbiotic Lion King
Ecology is how organisms interact with each other and the environment. The Lion King is linked to
ecology by showing how organisms interact with each other and the environment. My three topics
are how symbiotic relationships are important to a community, how limiting factors affect a
community, how communities respond to abiotic or biotic factors, and how this is linked to the
movie and Ecology. Symbiotic Relationships are interactions between two species and how they
affect each other. There are three different types of symbiotic relationships Mutualism,
Commensalism, and Parasitism. Symbiotic Relationships are related to ecology because they both
talk about interaction with others. One example from the Lion King is when the birds go onto the
tusk of the elephant. This is an example of Commensalism because the birds are eating insects off

These factors will affect how organisms will behavior and how organisms will survive. An
example is when the hyenas came to pride rock. This is a biotic factor because it affected the
whole pride land by making the herds leave and making everyone hungry. Another example is
when water became scarce in the pride land. This is an Abiotic factor because it made the
populations leave the pride land and everyone scours for water. The examples from the movie
happen in real life because when someone like the hyenas comes to a community they always
disrupt the community. An example from real life is in the Tundra, plants have to adapt to the
very long cold winters because the sun does not come up. This is an example of Abiotic factor
because it shows the plants have to respond in order to survive. The examples in the movie and the
real life example have much common. The animals and plants both have to respond to changing

Spotlight Reflection
Recently in Journalism class, we watched the movie titled Spotlight which was based on the story
of the 87 priest molestation cases that occurred in Boston alone. This movie followed a team of
Journalists, the Spotlight Team, who worked for the Boston Globe. This team tracked down 87
molester priests and cultivated a story to bring attention to the issue. While there were a lot of
important concepts highlighted in this movie, the three main concepts of the film were on why
this issue has been happening for such an exaggerated period of time, preposterous events can
occur in the most unexpected places and that vulnerable people are effortlessly taken advantage of.
The world let these incidents go on for too long. For years, the priests not just in these Boston
churches, but around the globe had been performing inappropriate acts on powerless children in
their churches. It was even made known that these churches were fully aware of these events and
masked the truth from their communities. The church essentially wanted so desperately to believe
that it was a minor flaw in the system. In reality, it was happening in an exuberant amount of
religious areas. It is partially based on the statement that no one wants to cuff a priestbecause they
feel that in a way, it would make them look atrocious.
To keep muted on these events, people were put under restraint by their own family and friends.
They were told not to speak out about their molestation cases. The belief in the

Texting Argument Essay
Have anyone ever wondered why literacy rates are low? Technology is a very good thing, but
people should measure their usage. All electronic devices have apps where people can
communicate and even live chat with one another. Texting is one of those things that are affecting
people s brains and the literacy rates are dropping. People need to reduce the amount of texting
because some people text and drive, and literacy rates are lower because of this.
Another term for texting would be considered sms (source B). Sms stands for short term message.
Tm is also a short term for text message (Dakin). Social Slang and slang in general is being used
often when people talk to each other( Miners). For example people use numbers, symbols, and
word phrases when they text (Tomaszewski). This slang/social slang will affect people when they
get a professional job, because they will not know how to spell correctly (Tomaszewski). The ...

Being on the phone is a huge distraction. In Some cases have also had more car accidents because
of driving and texting (Loftis). Texting can also cause finger problems(Kelland). Some teens
text during school or try to get away with texting during school (Hanfer). They use auto correct
instead of spelling the word (Fleck). These texting cases are going to get worse as the years go
on if we do not limit the usage of texting (Hanfer). The majority of teens get accustomed to using
cyber slang (Miners). To continue, some teens choose to text at night because they have more free
time or need help with homework (Fleck). Walking and texting is another negative cause because
they are focusing on what they are doing rather than paying attention to where they are going or
where they are walking to (Loftis). Teens texting affects them during class because it is easier for
them to text each other the answers on a text which would be considered cheating

Analysis Of The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Superheroes have been scrutinized for several for methods dealing with criminals and how they
react in their everyday lives. Inner personal problems of a hero have a way to change the
meaning of their status and affect the effectiveness of a hero s influence and philosophical
meaning. This is usually forced into comic books and movies to give a character an air of grit in
their media. Sometimes this creates a beautiful masterpiece of story and introduces depth to the
character, but it can also have a detrimental to the image of the character. Taking a darker tone with
a superherotype character is ultimately a bad idea in the long run because it s is hard to create a
mature story with most characters without deviating from what the fans believe in the character
and how they are seen by others causing problems for the parent company, giving characters a
darker tone can destroy a classic character s easily recognizable characteristics also, the move can
sink a company whose reputation was ruined by the decision. Having a fantastical ability is
always a hindrance when writing a serious or dark story because there is the need to ground the
story in realism and believability. Darker superhero stories can t handle superpowers well within the
story telling and writing. Most darker stories who have a character with extremely unusual
superpowers tend to have either a convoluted plots or just destroys the meaning of the character to
the point where people hate the new representation.

Pros And Cons Of The North American Free Trade Agreement
The North American Free Trade Agreement, or N.A.F.T.A, was established to improve the
economy of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It has been close to twenty three years since
the treaty was officially signed; time has given us insight into the effects that this agreement has
produced. In 1984, lowering tariff was a major discussion between Mulroney, Prime Minister of
Canada, and President Ronald Reagan. They came to an agreement in 1988 making it official for
these countries to trade more efficiently with one another. Soon enough Mexico was interested in
bringing a similar treaty with the United Statesas the tariffs were quite high between the two. After a
while of negotiating, Canada saw the opportunity for the three countries... Show more content on

Real wages in Mexico have fallen significantly below pre NAFTA levels as price increases for
basic consumer goods have exceeded wage increases. A minimum wage earner in Mexico today
can buy 38 percent fewer consumer goods than on the day that NAFTA took effect. Despite
promises that NAFTA would benefit Mexican consumers by granting access to cheaper imported
products, the cost of basic consumer goods in Mexico has risen to seven times the pre NAFTA
level, while the minimum wage stands at only four times the pre NAFTA level.
Those negative effects end up hurting us in return as people are settling for less due to all the
cheap methods being used. The changes it has had on Mexico reflect the awful exploitation that is
being caused by the treaty. United States could benefit from a change to the treaty making it better
as a whole to achieve greater economic power. There needs to be a change as NAFTA s intentions
seem beneficial only that the way it is being executed is not reaching the potential it

Obstacles In Zeitoun
The award winning novel, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers illustrates the obstacles Zeitoun had to
overcome to see his precious family. During Hurricane Katrina, Abdulrahman Zeitoun stayed in
New Orleans instead being with his family to help people who are in need of assistant. While
rowing on his canoe, rescuing civilians, he was falsely imprisoned immediately after Hurricane
Katrinabut was later released. Couple years after the book was distributed around the United States,
Zeitounwas accused of attempting murder and hiring a hitman to kill his wife, Kathy. He was
convicted with stalking and was sentenced 4 years in prison. However, with all the accusation and

In Eggers novels, it gave great examples about Islamophobia, for example, when FEMA(Federal
Emergency Management Agency) arrested Zeitoun, they thought that Zeitoun was tied to a
terrorist organization due to his ethnicity, The authoring committee had been asked to speculate
on possible terrorist exploitation of a high category hurricane. (308). The government are
basically saying that they should assume all looters or Middle Eastern descents are a terrorist
threat to the United States during Hurricane Katrina. This kind of racial profiling in our
government brings back past history. After the Slavery was abolished, African Americans and
other minorities were being mistreated and was segregated from white people. The government
did nothing to stop this kind of mistreatment and actually encourage white people to separate
from the minorities by separating bus seats, bathrooms, etc. After 9/11 people start to see
Muslims differently and we are basically repeating history. If we are not aware of this kind of
prejudice, than Muslims will be mistreated and in the back of people s mind they will view all
Muslims as terrorist. It is an universal understanding that no one should judge or hurt somebody
based on their ethnicity. Not only it is an universal understanding but in the future, we can prevent
this kind of prejudice against any ethnic group because we are being exposed to this type of

History of Internet Essay examples
Without a doubt, the Internet is undergoing a major transition as it experiences a tremendous influx
of new users. Due to the anarchic, distributed nature of the net, we cannot even begin to enumerate
the population of the Internet or its growth. As more of the world s population moves on line, new
concerns will arise which did not confront the earlier generations. The new culture will demand
different resources, services and technology than the old generations expected and used. Already we
can witness a clash between the emergent culture and the entrenched culture. The largest conflicts
occurring now are about sharing resources, the impending commercialization of the net, and the
growing problem of computer crime.
The Internet was born ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is only in the past year or two that we have begun to see the explosion of the new generation on
the Internet. Businesses have begun connecting themselves to the net, especially with the prospect
of the NSFNET backbone changing hands to permit commercial traffic. Public access nets run by
communities or businesses are springing up in cities all over the world, bringing in users who know
little about computers and are more interested in the entertainment and information they can glean
from the net.
Commercial providers like America Online and Compuserve are beginning to open gateways from
their exclusive services to the open Internet, specifically allowing their users to access email,
netnews and soon ftp and telnet services. The explosion of BBSs and the shared Fidonet software
has brought many users who were previously unable to get an account through a university to the
world of email and netnews. At this point, anyone with a computer and a modem can access these
most basic services. Several state s, such as Maryland, have begun efforts to connect all their
residents to the net, often through their library system. The city of Cambridge,
MA now offers access to the world wide web for short segments of time in its public libraries, and
even several progressive coffeehouses in the San Francisco Bay area and soon in the Boston area
are offering public net access.
In the last 20 years, the net has developed slowly, adapting comfortably as its

Maximum Ride Day Analysis
Maximum Ride Day 7 Pages 281 312 During this part of the book they were inside a toy store at
the moment and wondering where they could find the Institute to find out who they really were.
Angel was missing from the group in the toy store so Max started off by going to check the
stuffed animal section. This was where she found Angel talking to to an old lady. Max s worries
had faded some because the wolf men called Erasers, don t usually live for more than five to six
years. The lady that was talking with Angel decided to buy the stuffed bear that she wanted so
badly. The old lady walked up to the register with Angel, pulled out her wallet, paid for the the
bear, and walked out of the store like nothing ever happened. The rest of the flock ran over to her
ask why the old lady bought the stuffed bear for her. She said, I just asked her with my thoughts.
They all stopped and looked at her and wondered how and why she was able to put her thoughts
into another person s mind. Max was about to teach her a life lesson about how putting thoughts
into others heads was bad and she should never do that again. But Fang grabbed Max s shoulder

Origins of the French Revolution
Both Bossenga and Andress offer interesting and well supported perspectives on the origins of the
French Revolution and the reasons it came about. Bossenga purports that the public fervor of the
time had little to do with the actual revolution, other than providing bodies for insurrection. Rather,
the institution of the royal state was an inherently flawed one by the reign of Louis XVI, to the
extent that only a full revolution would effectively produce solutions to the problems of the ancien
regime. Andress places a greater emphasis on the will of the people as an effective mechanism for
change. His belief is that the French Revolutionoffered an effective convergence of enough political,
social and economic turmoil to incite a popular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This created group individualism which meant that the nobility, among other groups, unified to
protect their privileges, despite royal attempts to fracture the group. Through this concept, and the
negative interactions with the crown, the foundation of a revolution based on equality was born.
The traditional court of Louis XVI presented a serious barricade to reform on the eve of the
revolution. Starting with Louis XIV, it became the ultimate symbol of royal authority, and blurred
the line between the political and familial within the court (Bossenga, 1301). Furthermore, even
after the role of intendants increased in political and economic importance, there still existed a
significant amount of nepotism and favoritism in the selection of these roles. The role of
ministers was often chosen of the same ilk, based on the sovereignty of the king, which led to
division within the court. Often, especially in finance, the court played a central role in the
blocking of reform, with Necker s original relief of duty and Calonne s calling of the Assembly of
Notables primary examples (Bossenga, 1304). Bossenga also argues that serious conflict between
the monarchy and parlements was not endemic to politics in the eighteenth century, but developed
primarily as a result of ministerial rivalries at Versailles, (Bossenga, 1301). Many regard Louis XVI

Minister Hong was initially nominated after President Park carried out a partial reshuffle of the Cabinet on February 17, nominating three new ministers for unification, maritime, transport and financial regulation. • 3. Oscar Romero s Religious Beliefs Affected His Work For... Explain how Oscar Romero s religious beliefs affected his work for social change I will not tire of declaring that if we truly want an effective end to the violence, we must eliminate the violence that lies at the root of all violence: structural violence, social injustice, the exclusion of citizens from the management of the country, repression, Oscar Romero said in his sermon on the 23rd September 1979. Six months later, Romero was shot and killed. During the 1970 s and 80 s the El Salvadorian public experienced a brutal campaign of repression by the military government, which claimed thousands of lives. The leader of the church, Oscar Romero began to speak out on behalf of the victims and on the 23rd of March 1980, he made a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was admitted into a seminary at 14 and then was eventually, in 1942 at the age of 25, ordained a priest. Romero then managed to convince 5 radio stations to broadcast his Sunday sermon allowing Romero s words to reach peasant farmers who did not believe they were welcome in church. In 1977 Romero became Archbishop of Santiago de Maria. Then, On 12 March 1977, Fr. Rutilio Grande and two people Romero is travelling with are shot and killed. Asa result of this, Romero cancels all Masses the next Sunday except for one, which was in front of the cathedral for 100,000 people. He then refuses to attend any government event until the murder is solved. Later that same year Romero became Archbishop of San Salvador, the capital city. Thousands of people were going missing. The president of El Salvador failed to investigate these killings, even after Romero demanded that he should. In 1979 Romero presented the pope with seven reports of kidnapping, torture and murder. By this time the amount of people being killed was more than 3000 per month and Romero could offer no more to El Salvador than hope and faith. On March 23, 1980, Romero began to speak out to the soldiers: I beg you, I implore you, I order you... in the name of God, stop the repression! The evening after saying this, a paid assassin shot Romero while giving Mass in the Divine Providence Hospital. Romero became a martyr and is now regarded as saint in El Salvador. He remains a symbol of hope to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Civil War Legality The United States legal system experienced immense change caused by the Civil War. The main causes of the war included the obvious issue of slavery, but also that off states rights and brought to question exactly how much power the federal government had. Despite the obvious moral reasons for removing slavery, the process to do so faced issues in regards to legality. The legality of slavery was discussed throughout various issues including property, state, and of course human rights. The institution of slavery violated the due process rights to life and liberty of the enslaved, however the removal of the institution of slavery violated the due process rights pertaining to the property of the slave owners. The issue regarding the strength of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This also relates to the idea of southern states rejecting progression and modernization and seeking to keep a traditional society. An example of states exercising their rights is The South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification, enacted in 1832, which abolished tariffs on slavery put in place by the federal government. It was argued that the federal government was acting unconstitutionally despite significantly lowering the tariffs, and that states could nullify federal law (Hall, 246). This then led to the ordinance of nullification (Hall, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Destiny, Free Will and Choice The Power of Fate in Oedipus the King The concept of fate has existed since the time of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed very strongly in fate, which can be defined as either a power beyond human control that determines events, or the outcome or end. In Oedipus Rex, King Oedipus lives and dies by fate. Fate influences the entire plot, thereby allowing for some interesting developments that may be unpredictable to the audience. In Sophocles Oedipus Rex , fate truly is a huge factor in many scenes and events. According to ancient Greek belief, the word of God was fate, and fate was the word of God. Therefore, every event that ever happened was predetermined and unchangeable. Oedipus himself has been completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For some fateful offense he committed at the feet of the gods, he was doomed to suffer a horrendous curse, which was that his son would grow up to kill him one day and marry his (Laius s) wife. Jocasta was also very much influenced by the mysteries of fate. She delivered a baby who later delivered her many babies in an incestuous relationship, though she was not cognizant of the fact when it occurred. She also did not hesitate to throw her baby simply because the word of Apollo said that her son would kill her husband and marry her later. This is an example of the fateful word of God whom the Greeks believed was the be all, end all (Elsom, 87). Thus, she too was a victim of fate, as everybody else was. Oedipus was not just fated by events beyond his control, but he was also fated by excessive hubris and pride. He was so proud, he had to kill an old man denying him passage on a forlorn crossroad (his father, Laius). He was so proud that he was blinded by his pride and could not see the truth of his existence until the pride was finally shattered. He was too proud to accept the fact that he could not avoid his fate. Such as when he accused Creon of conspiracy to murder Laius; he was too blinded by pride to accept the fact that he himself could be guilty. You, plotting to kill me, kill the king I see it all, the marauding thief... (Sophocles, 181). Oedipus, though he believed that it was someone else, unknowingly brought corruption ... • 6. Food In Japanese Food We as humans, see food as just a necessity of survival. As we intake our meal for the day, it is uncommon for us to think past the taste or temperature of what is being placed in our mouth; we don t pay attention to the depth of what the food on our plate could mean to not only us, but to others in the world. Unlike what most may believe, foodis an essential component of society. The consumption, preparation and the values and customs that attribute to creation of these foods symbolize a variety of thing in a culture. The way a culture prepares and eats its food shows us a glimpse of what this culture may be like. The art that is involved in the process of a culture s breakfast, lunch and/or dinner illustrates characteristics and the personality of that culture. Though the Japanese are portrayed as fun, animated people in media, the Japanese are actual very respectful, polite, structured people. This may not be something you can see in television, but if you take a look at their meals and how they are prepared and consumed you can see how much honor is put into the art of eating and how that symbolizes the personality of the culture at large. Before getting into the consumption aspect of the meal, lets first look at how the food is prepared. Japanese meals are highly structured events, and the different versions of a Japanese meal are defined by the relative position of the major carbohydrate rice whose presence is culturally important, (Ashkenazi, Jacob 2000, 82) No ... Terry Tempest Williams Thesis Wilderness is the source of what we can imagine and what we cannot the taproot of consciousness, commented author Terry Tempest Williams at the centennial of the National Parks Service celebration in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 7th. To celebrate the centennial of the National Parks, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and The King s English Bookshop hosted an evening with Terry Tempest Williams and The National Parks Band. That we will be good stewards and not take too much or give back too little, that we will recognize wild nature for what it is, in all its magnificent and complex history an unfathomable wealth that should be consciously saved, not ruthlessly spent. • 9. Colin Powell s 18 Leadership Principals General (USA Ret) Colin L. Powell s 18 Leadership Principals During his distinguished military career, General Colin Powell exemplified what it means to be a great leader. In a briefing given to the Outreach To America Program, General Powell outlined 18 principals that all leaders should strive to encompass. After reviewing his brief, three of these principals stuck out Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off , The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them and Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier . These three principals resonate with my personal experiences in the military and in leadership. The first principal, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off , is something that I struggled with early in my military career. I was eager to prove myself and accomplish missions assigned to me at any cost. As my career progressed and I had soldiers assigned to me, I realized that being a yes man is not always the responsible choice. • 12. Why College Is Right For Everyone Several ponder if college is right for everyone. Stephanie Owen, a senior research assistant at Brookings Center on Children and Families at the time of the report s publication and she currently serves as a research associate at the Urban Institute, and Isabel Sawhill, a co director of the Center on Children and Families and a senior fellow in economic studies at Brookings, wrote an essay called Should Everyone Go to College?, that gives insight on if college is right for every person. While they show reason why college can be a smart investment, they also acknowledge that it is not for all. They also bring attention to the fact that an enormous deal of thought needs to be put into attending to college or not and all the questions that come after that decision. They also mention that it is common knowledge that this topic is highly debated. Should Everyone Go to College? provides an affective argument that features both sides of the debate. Sawhill and Owen achieve this by utilizing logos (mostly) and pathos and ethos. Using a factual appeal along with emotional and ethical appeals typically impacts the reader in at least one way. In Should Everyone Go to College? Owen and Sawhill primarily use logos, or a factual appeal. Facts and statics cannot be argued but to a certain extent. • 13. Reflection In Society Have you ever wondered what it s like to live in the shoes of someone who s autistic or has extreme social anxiety? Either of these things can make functioning in society very difficult, but not impossible. At least that s what I believe, some people disagree with that. The author seems to believe that is impossible to function in society if either of these things affect you. It is possible to function in society, it just takes a lot of patience and practice. Haddon portrays that if you are suffering from autism, then you can t function in society at all. He makes it so that Christopher doesn t liked being touched by people so much, that he ll scream or hit someone if he s touched. No matter what affects you, this is the behavior of a child. On page 8 it says The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn t like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him. Yes people with autism have a harder time functioning in society, but at the age Christopher is, he should know that you can t just hit people when they touch you. On page 137 it says So I got out my Swiss Army knifeand I flicked out the saw blade and I held it tightly in the pocket that Toby wasn t in so that I could stab someone if they grabbed hold of me, . This is a very dangerous thing to do, if Christopher does pull out his knife on someone, then he could get in a lot of trouble. • 17. Violence, Power, and Goals in the Hebrew Bible and The... Violence is a means to an end. Violence is not something most humans resort to for enjoyment. Violence is, however, the right thing to be done in certain situations. With violence, comes great power. Power and violence walk together, hand in hand. When violence is exhibited, the power of the individual is shown to those around him. In both the Hebrew Bible and The Iliad, violence is depicted as a mode to reach goals. The reason for this is that violence allows an individual or a deity to flaunt their powers, while they simultaneously achieve their personal and communal ambitions. Just like how mortals have their own goals, deities also have an agenda. God, in the Hebrew Bible, has only two goals: to have humans obey Him blindly and to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sacrifices are, in nature, very violent. Innocent blood is spilled to please the vengeful God. In Exodus 12, the Lord struck down all the first born in the land of Egypt, from the first born of Pharaoh who sat on the throne the first born of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the first born of the cattle (Exodus 12:29). God did all that just because the Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let the Israelites leave his country. The immense sacrifice of the first borns of man and beast was an act of violence that led the exodus of the Israelites. The mass murder of the Egyptian people and livestock also proves to the Pharaoh the great power of God, a power that would have remained unseen if not for the plagues and the executions. For after the Pharaoh witnessed the death of at least one man or one beast in each Egyptian s household, he said, Up, depart from among my people...Go, worship the Lord as you said (Exodus 12:31). With this final act of violence, God helped reach the Israelites communal goal: to leave the oppressive Egypt and to enter the liberal Promise Land of Canaan. Because humans were created in God s image, it makes perfect sense that humans will use violence as a way to achieve their own goals, just like what God does. In I Samuel, David had one goal during the Goliath episode: to let this whole assembly (the soldiers) know that the Lord can give victory without sword or spear. For ... The Matching Book Method The Matching Book Method allows managers to decide in which period transactions are to be recorded. Thus, this method is the most powerful method in income smoothing. When dealing with a problem, the best approach towards solving is to find and fix the root of the problem. So why is college tuition, so high? One reason is the loss of state funding. The lucky generation are the baby boomers in how they benefited from state funding which made it easier to attend college (Campos). Colleges relied heavily on state funding and they had to find a way to make up for all the money they stopped receiving. The best solution was to raise tuition every year and this sparked the inflation that millions of people deal with every year. Tuition used to be affordable and more people were able to graduate as a result. So now that people are forced to pay much more in tuition, it s safe to assume that every bit of that extra money is being used to enhance students education. Sadly this is false and here s the reason why. The maintenance and supervision of a college is handled by college administrators. Several years ago, there were not a handful of administrators that worked present on campus, but as time progressed more and more administrators were being hired. • 32. Themes In Fire And Flood In the book Fire and Flood by Victoria Scott, the main character Tella is faced with many challenges that she decided to take on. These challenges she took were for her brother Cody and curing his sickness. They were taken place in the middle of a jungle, desert, and mountain ranges where many dangers were presented. She faced many situations along this expedition, but she never abandoned the thought of being able to help her brother. One theme that can be supported throughout the book by many critical scenes is that it takes a lot of strength and perseverance to make sacrifices for a person that is important. To be specific, the book states My head bobs above and below the surface, each time I draw in a breath , I wonder if it ll be my last (Scott 154). This quote connects to the theme because it shows how she had to go through rough times that were worse than others, but she still never gave up. This supports the theme because it is a good representation of what she had to go through in the race. In addition, the author explains how there were more dangerous situations outside of the natural obstacles in the race. Specifically, the book states I look over my shoulder and gasp. The strange men are chasing us (Scott 155). This part of the book is very important because it shows how other things were there , such as unsafe people who were also another risk to their lives at this time. This shows that Tella had to be very cautious of her surroundings and who was near her. After all, Tella went on this race for her brother knowing the conditions she was going to be put through, which shows her strength and perseverance. • 33. Washington In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave In Frederick Douglass The Heroic Slave, readers are first introduced to Madison Washington, an enslaved black man, through the perspective of the narrator, Mr. Listwell, a white, northern traveller. It is through this description of his physical features that we are able to catch a glimpse of Washington s personality one which defies and breaks stereotypes of black men in the nineteenth century. The first thing one notices about the manner in which Washington is described is the use of contradictory, yet complementary, descriptors. Listwell says Washington is of manly form, showing Herculean strength. It is also said that a child might play in his arms, or dance on his shoulders and that his broad mouth and nose spoke only of good nature and kindness. One other specific phrase that stands out is his face was black, but comely. This is, in its original biblical usage, a phrase used to describe a woman namely, her attractiveness though here, it s being used to describe a man. The fact that a white man is depicting a man, especially a black one, as attractive, despite his blackness, is pretty noteworthy (this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essay On Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership consists of four components, being charisma or idealized influence, inspiration and vision, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration (Marshall, 2011). All of these components are of equal importance when employing transformational leadership, but the component that I find most personally applicable is charisma or idealized influence. As a student nurse, my surroundings are always changing, one moment I am on the labor and delivery unit with a group of peers and the next week I am with a totally different group of peers in a mental health facility. Being surrounded by an ever changing group with ever changing goals and objectives I feel as though it is a challenge to emerge as a leader. It is my personal belief that in order to become a leader, some sort of personal connection must be forged, and this can be difficult with a revolving schedule. Conversely, it is also my opinion that despite how well one knows the people that they are surrounded by, if one knows themselves and their beliefs and values, their charisma will be evident. Being charismatic is about being a role model and inspiring others to follow based on the personal qualities that one exemplifies (Marshall, 2011). The former american football player, coach, and executive in the National Football League, Vince lombardiwas the head coach who took the Green Bay Packers to victory. The speech was told to his team but later it was a motivational speech for everyone. In Vince T. Lombardi s motivational speech he evokes the diction of winning, an appeal to the common person s abilities, and an intense tone to show that there is no room for being number two and being number one is everyone s goal no matter what they do. Vince Lombardi uses diction to strengthen and make clear that winning is everyone s goal no matter what they do. He started his speech by opening with , Winning is not a sometime thing; it s an all the time thing . He used thing in that first sentence referring to winning, and that diction made winning more of an object and something people can take. To make clear that winning is everyone s goal he transitioned to, You don t win once in awhile; you don t do things right once in awhile; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Thomas Polk in Mecklenburg County, 1750 1800 With over 250 years of history as a county in North Carolina, Mecklenburg County has an extensive and fascinating story to tell. Established in 1762, the county that I call home has been a part of this country since before we gained our independence from Great Britain. When most Americans hear the surname Polk, they automatically think of our nation s eleventh president, James Knox Polk. A fraction of those people are able to tell you that James was born in Mecklenburg County and spent the first ten or so years of his life in present day Pineville. Very few, however, could tell you of James great uncle, Thomas Polk, who was crucial to the founding and progress of Mecklenburg County. Through my research, I have found numerous Polks who were either born in, raised in, or simply moved to Mecklenburg County. Some of these people had a minor impact on the area, but Thomas Polk influenced Mecklenburg County in a much bigger way. Polk had numerous accolades. Among them are Revolutionary War soldier, local political leader, prominent land surveyor, and government executive. In this paper, the time period is restricted from circa 1750 until circa 1800. These approximate dates correspond to the arrival of Thomas Polk to Mecklenburg County, and to his death. • 47. Analysis Of The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Superheroes have been scrutinized for several for methods dealing with criminals and how they react in their everyday lives. Inner personal problems of a hero have a way to change the meaning of their status and affect the effectiveness of a hero s influence and philosophical meaning. This is usually forced into comic books and movies to give a character an air of grit in their media. Sometimes this creates a beautiful masterpiece of story and introduces depth to the character, but it can also have a detrimental to the image of the character. Taking a darker tone with a superherotype character is ultimately a bad idea in the long run because it s is hard to create a mature story with most characters without deviating from what the fans believe in the character and how they are seen by others causing problems for the parent company, giving characters a darker tone can destroy a classic character s easily recognizable characteristics also, the move can sink a company whose reputation was ruined by the decision. Having a fantastical ability is always a hindrance when writing a serious or dark story because there is the need to ground the story in realism and believability. Darker superhero stories can t handle superpowers well within the story telling and writing. • 54. Origins of the French Revolution Both Bossenga and Andress offer interesting and well supported perspectives on the origins of the French Revolution and the reasons it came about. Bossenga purports that the public fervor of the time had little to do with the actual revolution, other than providing bodies for insurrection. Rather, the institution of the royal state was an inherently flawed one by the reign of Louis XVI, to the extent that only a full revolution would effectively produce solutions to the problems of the ancien regime. Andress places a greater emphasis on the will of the people as an effective mechanism for change. His belief is that the French Revolutionoffered an effective convergence of enough political, social and economic turmoil to incite a popular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This created group individualism which meant that the nobility, among other groups, unified to protect their privileges, despite royal attempts to fracture the group. Through this concept, and the negative interactions with the crown, the foundation of a revolution based on equality was born. The traditional court of Louis XVI presented a serious barricade to reform on the eve of the revolution. Starting with Louis XIV, it became the ultimate symbol of royal authority, and blurred the line between the political and familial within the court (Bossenga, 1301). Furthermore, even after the role of intendants increased in political and economic importance, there still existed a significant amount of nepotism and favoritism in the selection of these roles. The role of ministers was often chosen of the same ilk, based on the sovereignty of the king, which led to division within the court. Often, especially in finance, the court played a central role in the blocking of reform, with Necker s original relief of duty and Calonne s calling of the Assembly of Notables primary examples (Bossenga, 1304). Bossenga also argues that serious conflict between the monarchy and parlements was not endemic to politics in the eighteenth century, but developed primarily as a result of ministerial rivalries at Versailles, (Bossenga, 1301). Many regard Louis XVI to have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
